~ REVIEW: Chasing Serenity by Eden Butler ~

18513705SynopsisGraduate student Autumn McShane has had her share of heartbreak. She’s been abandoned and betrayed and she lost her beloved mother in a tragic car accident five months ago. That loss damaged her body and fractured her spirit but she’s learning to recover, until her ex-boyfriend returns to town, intent on making her life miserable.

Declan Fraser hates her ex as much as Autumn does, but the last thing she needs is to put her trust in the hands of another man, especially one like Declan: his hard body and lulling Irish accent makes more than a few girls weak-kneed. The talented rugby player is rude and sarcastic, with tattooed, muscular arms and a cocky attitude, but he’s the only one who can help Autumn win an ill-advised bet that, if lost, could cost her more than she’s willing to pay. The reluctant alliance between Declan and Autumn stirs up cravings she doesn’t want to admit, but Declan is a hard man to resist.

Just when Autumn starts letting down her carefully constructed walls to the sexy bad boy, he betrays her when she needs him most. Autumn suspects Declan has secrets, and she is determined to uncover what drove him away from her, even if that means fraternizing with the enemy. But will the truth return Declan to her arms or add to the scars on her heart?

Autumn McShane is a graduate student at Cavanaugh College. She is struggling to move on from a horrific car accident that left her battered and broken and her mom dead. Autumn feels she has known only loss and heartache over the last 8 years of her life, with the abandonment of her father at age 14, a controlling boyfriend that left her to pursue his own dream and then the most recent trauma of witnessing her mom’s death.
Even though she seems to have a lot of negative in her life, Autumn 3 really great friends that are with her through everything and share her love of rugby. Then she meets a hot, new rugby player for Cavanaugh College who has just come over from Ireland, Declan Fraser.
From the moment of the drunken kiss Declan lays on her, Autumn is thrown off balance, and starts to change her mind about not opening up to any new relationships. From experience, she only ends up hurt in the end. Every time Autumn tries to keep her wall up against Declan, he does something funny and endearing to take another chip out of the wall.

Declan has also suffered the loss of his mother and understands the pain Autumn is going through. He also helps Autumn to become physically stronger after the car accident. Just as things are really starting to progress for Autumn and Declan, there is a twist in the story that can end any possibility of a future for the two. Can Autumn move beyond the heartache she has suffered through all these years and embrace a future with Declan? Will Declan be able to convince Autumn that love is worth the risk?
This is a really great story about moving past great loss and tragedy and opening up to love again. Eden Butler is very descriptive in her writing and giving the reader a full picture of the story even though the story is only in Autumn’s POV. This is the first book in a series, however it does not end in a cliffhanger. Autumn’s friends have plenty of personality and I will definitely be reading the rest of the series to see what happens to them. I would definitely recommend this book to others!
