~ REVIEW: Lighter (Begin Again #1) by Gia Riley ~

Lighter_FrontCover_LoResSynopsisWhat do you do when you can’t save the one you love?

Sophie can’t survive without control. Growing up with an alcoholic father, she craves the discipline of gymnastics. Feeling lost on a brand new college campus, she lets loose for the first time in her life. But with freedom comes consequences. Is one night everything she hopes? Or will she become her own worst nightmare?

Kipton’s one year away from graduation. He’s never thought beyond a one night stand until meeting his sister’s new roommate. Finally setting his sights on the girl he can’t resist, he’s more determined than ever when she won’t give in to his persuasions. He’s always gotten the girl, and he’s not about to give up without a fight.

Will Sophie be able to salvage her dreams and wage a war against her own vices? Can she finally let love in? Or will history repeat itself causing her to self-destruct?

Lighter isn’t your typical college romance. Darkness suffocates, dreams are dashed, and battles are lost. Love takes on a whole new meaning.

daniell review 5 star aWow!! Once I picked up this book, I did NOT want to put it down!!

Sophie has finally escaped the hell she had to endure during her childhood, with an abusive father and later an abusive boyfriend, and went away to college for a fresh start.  She is on scholarship for gymnastics and has dreams of being a coach one day. Her new roommate is super friendly and has a hot brother, Kipton, that makes her question her “no dating” rule.
Kipton is a senior in college and has had his share of one-night stands. He hasn’t met a girl that really held his interest for long until he meets Sophie. Even though she is hesitant to move beyond anything other than friends, Kipton is not giving up that easily.
Will Sophie give Kipton a chance at being more than a friend? And when things from Sophie’s past come out, will Kipton stand by her side?
LOVED THIS BOOK!!!  Both Sophie and Kipton are such likeable characters and it doesn’t hurt that Kipton has some of the ultimate book boyfriend qualities. The story is told from both Sophie and Kipton’s POV which I am a fan of.  There are several fantastic secondary characters in this book that I loved as well and hope there might be more from these characters in the future.  I have been a fan of Gia Riley since I won a copy of Between the Pain and this book has made me love her even more! Gia is not afraid to deal with tough subjects in her books and does so with such sensitivity.  I look forward to reading more from Gia and won’t hesitate to buy any of her future books!!

Excerpt

“Are you fucking kidding me, Rox?” Stacey screamed into the phone. There was music blaring in the background, and I heard the clicking of a camera lens and loud flashes. I could only imagine how many umbrellas were set up for the shoot. She was at her next spread for Cover Girl, but decided to stop the presses just for me.

“I wish I were,” I said, remembering his lips on my thighs and the taste of him in my mouth. “He’s intoxicating.” My words seemed to drift away into the open space of the car as I accelerated onto the 610 Loop.

“Oh my god,” she said. “The airiness in your tone, the pauses between your sentences—you fucking liiiiiiiiike him, don’t you?”

I couldn’t admit that, not right now. It was too soon, way too soon. Actually, only hours after the incident, as I now termed it. I couldn’t even tell Stacey what exactly had happened, just that something had happened. Her imagination was dirty, so I’m sure she could figure it out with just a few hints. Honestly, if I even said a peep about it, or about how Parker Williams made me feel, she would be declaring her victory. I might as well just hand her the crown.

The incident had shifted everything I once thought I believed, and everything I had tried to avoid. I couldn’t deny that when I closed my eyes, his face was the one I saw. Those piercing blue eyes were burned into my retinas. I knew the smile permanently attached to my lips existed for one reason. Or if one wanted to get technical, it was the messy brown hair, blue eyes, and that sexy voice that almost made my knees go weak.

Oh my god.

Was I having a revelation?

Yes, I was having a revelation. Maybe I wasn’t in control of how I felt anymore? But that couldn’t be. Not after being with someone only once. The chase was over, wasn’t it? Fuuuuucccckkkkkk me! The heart was trying to control me, but I couldn’t let it. Even the heart had weaknesses. Love was the equivalent of stabbing a dagger into a heart and twisting. Okay, maybe it wasn’t that dramatic, but it felt like it to me.

“No. Of course not,” I said after a long pause. I was lost in my thoughts, and Stacey, being the way she was, noticed.

“I wish I could see your face right now, because I know you’re lying. I know you are trying to feed me lies, Roxane VanBuren, and I’m not having it. I want every single dirty little detail of what happened, and not just, ‘we moved to second base,’ got it?”

A man’s voice yelled in the background about how models should get off their damn phones and actually work today.

“I’ve got to go. Darrell is being such a douche. I swear his glitter panties are in a knot right now … but this isn’t over.”

More yells followed, and she said her goodbyes after cursing loudly that it was an emergency and people needed to shut the hell up.

My heart raced at the thought of what was happening to me. I had to deny this at all costs. I couldn’t be in like. I had never fallen for someone so soon. No way. And if I started admitting it, even to myself, it would be trouble.

I knew it sounded so silly to be in like, but it was the first step to love. All I could think of was that stupid childhood chant that we all sang to agitate people who were in like. Roxy and Parker sitting in a tree … next thing there would k-i-s-s-i-n-g, love, then a baby in a baby carriage. Hell no. No. There were no babies in my future.

After failing miserably at love, Roxane VanBuren swears off men but not before her determined best friend shows her all the advantages of being single. After a wild weekend full of sex, old-flames, and secrets, Roxane is desperate to forget it ever happened. But she learns it isn’t that easy.

Since becoming the President of VanBuren Investments, she knows how important it is for her professional and personal life to remain separate from one another. If the two were to mix, the rumors could possibly ruin her reputation, which is bad for her and bad for business. To avoid that, Roxane allows rules to define and guide her every move. Unfortunately for her, Parker Williams is determined to break them all, one at a time.

SynopsisNot afraid to speak his mind or make a scene, Nathaniel Kelly has made a name for himself as country music’s ultimate bad boy.

Covered in tattoos, singing songs about drugs, drinking and heartache, Nate acts more like an out of control rock star than the grandson of one of the genres most influential and legendary stars. Every man wants to be him. Every woman wants just one night with the hard-rocking country rebel.

Except me. I just want to know that the boy I used to love is happy and that I didn’t break his heart in vain. That’s why I buy every magazine that even mentions his name; at least, that’s the story I tell myself.

When my friends gave me a birthday present any fan would die for, I was suddenly face-to-face with the man I never thought I’d see again. My body wasn’t supposed to react to him the way it did. And, Nate sure as hell wasn’t supposed to look at me the way he used to.

Can someone you loved as a teenager really have a hold on your heart twelve years later? Is it ever too late to say you’re sorry and make up for past wrongs? I’m about to find out.

ExcerptI’d always planned to get the hell out of my hometown as soon as high school was over. Hell, once I hit tenth grade, I couldn’t pack my bags fast enough. I wanted nothing more than to see that shitty little town, and all of its residents, shrinking in my rearview mirror as soon as possible.

What I hadn’t planned on was having someone in my life who was so important that he made me question everything and wonder if I should stay. Or, that someone giving up everything so he didn’t have to leave me. I couldn’t let him do it, couldn’t let me be the thing that held him back, couldn’t let his love for me destroy his dreams. So, I did the only thing I could do; I wrecked it all.

For me, there was no simplicity of burning bridges. No, I strapped dynamite to every single one, blowing them into tiny smithereens. Then, I’d bulldozed each surviving piece into a pile, doused it with kerosene, and aimed a blow torch toward the debris, just to make sure there would be nothing left. As the flames roared to life, I danced around the blaze, drinking whiskey straight from the bottle, toasting the life I’d had, acting like a crazed woman performing a sacred ritual. As the last of the ashes drifted into the sky, fading from red hot into cold black, I sobbed, knowing there was no way I could ever undo the damage I’d just done.

It was stupid, dangerous, and devastating, but I needed to make sure every single relationship I had was destroyed. The only way I would be able to move on somewhere else was if there was no reason left for me to go back, and no way I could ever show my face there again, even if I’d wanted to. Unfortunately, I needed to hurt him, to decimate him, so he would hate me and could let me go and build a stronger life without me.

The one thing I never thought about, the one thing I hadn’t taken into consideration, was that most eighteen-year-old girls are idiots. They run on pure emotion, thinking with their heart, not their head. I’d thought I was so mature, that somehow I’d had all the answers and knew what was best for everyone, so I made their decisions for them. In reality, I was just a naive small-town girl with more fashion sense than common sense – and looking back at the pictures proves I didn’t know fashion for shit. What seemed like the perfect idea all those years ago was now my biggest regret.

tease2

ExcerptI realise that I’ve been waiting to see her since the last time she was here. I’ve wanted to feel that electricity that fires off her when she holds my gaze, and every week that she’s not been here, I’ve been disappointed. We haven’t spoken, haven’t even exchanged smiles. There’s just something there. It’s like we seek each other out, and I don’t know why. It’s turned in to a habit I like more than the ecstasy I take.

“Hey Finny boy, Tequila, you in or you going for a piss?” Kyle calls out behind me loading his question with the silent search of my intentions for this evening.

I glance back at him answering “Yeah, man.” When I look back, she’s still there. Looking. Just looking. No smile. No scowl. Just looking at me like there’s something compelling her to do so. The light catches her lip ring and my eyes roam the length of her body like a hungry man that’s been starved for weeks, no, months. She gives off something that makes my hormones run rampant, like an unbalanced teenager. Only I’m fully aware that I’m a grown man and I know exactly what I want to do to her. God, what I would do to her. She’s dressed in a little black dress, and I mean, little. It’s simple, but the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen. It hugs her tiny, perfect waist, and only just covers her ass. Her legs, her perfect legs, which even though she isn’t tall, look just long enough to wrap around my waist …

“Here.” Harley nudges my arm and hands me a shot of Tequila. I take it mindlessly, all the while still locked on to the enigma on the other side of the room. Then she does something that floors me. She nods, winks, and raises her glass to me across the room. For a second, I’m stunned at the action. We’ve been watching each other for weeks, no words, no actions, just the silent knowledge that we both know we are looking at each other. Now she’s broken the silent pact, what does that mean?

cd reiss new bioCD Reiss is a USA Today and Amazon bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up, she’s at the well, hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere, but it did embed TV story structure in her head well enough for her to take a big risk on a TV series structured erotic series called Songs of Submission. It’s about a kinky billionaire hung up on his ex-wife, an ingenue singer with a wisecracking mouth; art, music and sin in the city of Los Angeles.

Critics have dubbed the books “poetic,” “literary,” and “hauntingly atmospheric,” which is flattering enough for her to put it in a bio, but embarrassing enough for her not to tell her husband, or he might think she’s some sort of braggart who’s too good to give the toilets a once-over every couple of weeks or chop a cord of wood.

michele review 4 starsFrom page one I was sucked into this book! Jennifer has a way of weaving a story that pulls the reader in, and doesn’t let go until her story is finished. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to see what Jennifer comes up with next! Ryan is sent on an undercover job to bust a drug cartel. He’s determined to redeem himself after a previous job where he let himself think this the little head instead of the big one and almost busted the case. Though his head is in the right place this time, he can’t seem to shake the feelings he has for the gorgeous blonde that works in the coffee shop he goes to ever day. There is just something that draws him too her like a month to a flame.

Willow has major issues with men. I mean can you blame her, she’s had to up root everything to get away from her last boyfriend. But there is just something about the tall, sexy and brown eyed man that comes into her café. She doesn’t know what it is, but she can’t seem to keep the walls up when he’s around. He’s everything she’s ever imaged a man to be, but didn’t really think was out there.

Once these two finally get together its HOT! They fall into an easy relationship and never dig into each other’s pasts. However once secrets are revealed, are they able to keep the trust and the developing feelings of love for each other? Or will these secrets be too much and they walk their separate ways?

This was the first book I’ve read from Jennifer, and can be read as a standalone, but you better believe I’m going out and grabbing the other books in these series and reading those as well! If you’re looking for a book that has some hot steamy time, suspense and a sweet love story, this is the book for you! It’s got everything the everyday book lover would love to read!
