SynopsisFor readers of Shannon Stacey and Susan Mallery, the heartfelt new Briarwood series begins with a tale of forbidden love, broken promises, and second chances.

Growing up in Eastbridge, Connecticut, Carolyn Rivington was a young debutante who did whatever her parents asked. So when her father demanded that she break things off with the boy from the wrong side of the tracks or else, she did. Now Carolyn’s family is deep in debt. She’s no longer a member of the Briarwood Golf and Yacht Club, she’s an employee. And the tanned, tattooed, dangerously handsome stranger who saunters into her lobby isn’t just her new boss . . . he’s also her first love.

The last time he saw Carolyn, Jake Gaffney was in the back of a police cruiser, handcuffed and humiliated. But seeing her again stirs other memories: a blanket on the beach, the moon above their heads, and the most expensive bottle of wine he could afford. Now the tables have turned. As a real-estate magnate and Briarwood’s new owner, Jake doesn’t have to answer to anyone. But now that he’s back home, he’s finding it hard to live down his old reputation.

Before they can move forward, Jake and Carolyn must face their pasts. But it’ll take more than sizzling chemistry for them to heal old wounds and return to the love they once shared.

ExcerptThe conference room was bustling when she arrived. After grabbing a cup of coffee from the sideboard, she took a seat at the enormous table in the center of the room, next to Eric Lefoute, the head chef of Waves, the club’s restaurant. Unsurprisingly, the handsome Frenchman was scowling. Eric hated answering to authority and made no bones about the fact that attending such a meeting was going to take away from the prep time he needed for this afternoon’s luncheon.

Sinking back into one of the slightly worn but still functional chairs, she glanced around and took a bracing sip of black coffee. Everyone was seated now, impatiently waiting for the new owner to appear. Orwell Tippett, the athletics director, tapped a pen over and over again on his notepad. Even Summer Lawrence, the spa manager who’d found a seat on Carolyn’s other side, looked less-than-Zen as she twisted her straight, light brown ponytail into a tight corkscrew.

Summer leaned over to whisper in her ear. “What kind of changes do you think the new owner will make?”

Carolyn shrugged. “I’m not sure. We’ll have to wait and see.”

“Do you think everyone will get fired?”

“God, I hope not.”

Getting canned was her biggest worry right now. Despite the fact that members and staff seemed to like her—both personally and professionally—her family’s reputation and the fact that she was the new kid on the block both weighed against her. Now that the family fortune was decimated and the Rivington name was mud, it didn’t matter a whit that her maternal great-grandfather had been one of the club’s original investors.

Just as everyone’s anxiety was reaching a fever pitch, the door to the conference room opened. Her heart skipped a beat just before Richard stepped inside. Beside her, Eric emitted a sharp breath. He was just as worried as anyone else about the changes that might come.

She’d almost collected herself before he stepped in.

Him.

Tattoo Guy.

Everything kind of slipped sideways for a minute while she sat there, barely breathing. He belonged here, didn’t he? And she’d tried to kick him out! It was impossible for this day to get worse.

And then it did.

He removed his sunglasses, and familiar deep-blue eyes swept the room, sizing up everything and everyone. When his gaze finally met hers, his lips curled into the merest hint of a smile and his eyes narrowed.

“Hello, everyone,” he said in a deep voice. “I’m Jacob Gaffney, Briarwood’s new owner.”

At that moment, her heart stopped. Actually stopped, just like her dad’s had last week when he’d suffered a massive heart attack brought on by the huge amount of stress he was under. But Carolyn wasn’t having a heart attack, because her organ kick-started up almost immediately.

Jake.

It had been the best summer of her life—until everything had come crashing down. As she stared at him, trying to morph these new, hard, masculine features onto the boy she knew, Jake stared back. A complicated mix of emotion passed over his face—awareness, desire.

Disgust.

Sure that her cheeks were turning a furious crimson, she looked down at her fingers, now twisting in her lap. For a long time, she’d put up a wall to stop the ache, telling herself it was for the best. That she had been too young. Too inexperienced. But she was just fooling herself. Regret, sadness, and not for the first time, the intense desire for a do-over coursed through her in a wave of emotion. But in life, there were no do-overs, were there?

This hardened, transformed-to-the-point-of-unrecognizability Jake wasn’t going to give her one. Why would he, considering what she and her family had done?

Jake was now introducing himself and laying out the game plan for the staff for the next couple of weeks. The words, the room, even the walls were a blur. She was screwed, utterly and completely.

Because as soon as Jake got her alone, he was going to fire her ass, and then she’d be back where she started: a former socialite with crippling debt and a family on the brink of collapse.

Not that Jake would care, given that the last time she’d seen him, he’d been handcuffed in the back of a police car.

And her father was the one who’d put him there.

christie review 4 starsGreat second-chance love story and a perfect beach read. Once and Again is a story about love, loss, betrayal, family, friends, and starting over again.

Carolyn Rivington works for the Briarwood Golf and Yacht Club. Not long ago she and her family were members. However, her life has changed in the past fifteen years. She was once a young socialite who had it all-looks, all the money in the world, and love. Now, the only thing that’s left is her beauty. Her family lost all of its money because of bad decisions on her father’s part, and she allowed her family to take away her first love who was just a golf caddy. Carolyn is barely surviving financially, so she is greatly concerned when the club is sold to a new owner. And, she has every right to be. Her new boss was her old flame, Jake. Jake worked his butt off to amass a fortune in real estate development, and he has come to Briarwood to revive the once popular club. Carolyn is relieved that Jake doesn’t want to fire her. He needs her to help complete the new changes to the “old money” club. As they spend more time together, they come to realize their feelings are still there, but is there too much pain and bitterness to give love a second chance?

The story was told in several points of view. I thought it would just be from Carolyn and Jake’s point of view, but it wasn’t. It’s a book about their love story, but it’s also a book about the closeness of the employees at Briarwood. I loved how their stories are discovered through Carolyn’s relationship with each one. To me, she is the glue that holds this little group of “family” together. She’s a far cry from the young socialite that did everything to please her parents. She’s grown into a woman that truly cares about others. It’s always nice when you see characters change throughout the book. The same can be said about Jake. Life has hardened him, especially after he lost Carolyn. He wants to prove to the old families of Briarwood that he’s more than just the caddy that so many of them looked down on, but that proves to be harder than he thought. As he realizes Carolyn isn’t the selfish snob he thought she was, and he sees how good her heart is, his walls start to crumble. I so enjoyed watching them fall in love again as the obstacles of their pasts fell away.

Once and Again is the first book I have read by Elisabeth Barrett, but it certainly won’t be my last. I am curious to see who the next book will be about because there are so many characters I would like to see get their own book. So, I am anxiously awaiting the next one in the series.

SynopsisLies. Betrayal. Deceit. Carter knows them all too well. His whole life was based on them. He decided long ago that his life would be on his own terms. No one would dictate his future, since he’d had no control over his past.

 Desire. Lust. Love.

Julia is the bosses’ daughter. She’s everything that Carter wants, and nothing that he thinks he needs. She’s got plans of her own, and Carter is one of them.

Both determined to control their own paths, can she show him what his future could be like if he just lets go, or will he send her BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD?

 Excerpt

“You called for me, Ms. Gibbons?” Carter stepped up to the desk. “I finished those plans you wanted done. Would you like me to show them to you?”

Oh, he was good at this. “Yes I would, Mr. McIntyre. I hope they are to my satisfaction.”

“You’re going to have to get up and let me get to your computer so I can pull them up.” Of course, we had no computer, but I went with it. I stood, pushing the chair back as Carter walked around and stood behind me. He leaned over.

“You smell so good, Ms. Gibbons,” he said, making goosebumps prickle down my body.

“Mr. McIntyre, let’s keep on track. We have a lot to do today.”

“Oh yes, the plans. I’m going to need you to move this way so I can get to the computer.” I shifted, and he placed his hands on my hips. “No. This way.” He pulled me into him so there was no space in between us. “Do you like these plans?” he growled into my ear, grinding against me.

“They may need a few adjustments,” I said, turning to face him. His eyes followed my fingers as I began to unbutton my jacket. “Is this acceptable?”

“These plans need further investigation.” He removed my fingers and continued unbuttoning the jacket himself. I thought I was losing control, and fast. Thing was, I didn’t care. He reached the last button and the jacket fell open. Carter gripped the lapels of my jacket and pulled me to him, taking my lips with his. He let go, snaking his arms under the jacket and to my naked body underneath.

“These plans are almost perfect,” he whispered against my lips. “Turn around.” Need clenched low in my belly as I listened. He pulled my hair from it’s bun and it cascaded around me. He fisted it gently, pulling me back so he could reach around and kiss my neck.

“Mr. McIntyre,” I purred. “I didn’t know I had this type of plans.”

“You do now,” he said. “This fine body in this jacket; you’re going to get all sorts of plans, Ms. Gibbons.” He lifted the jacket, caressing my body and making me almost pant with need. “But first, there’s one more thing.”

“What’s that?”

“The plans can’t be complete with this boulder in the way. We’re going to have to remove it.” When he began pulling on the jacket, I assisted, shoving it down my shoulders and arms. It fell in between us on the floor and he kicked it away. “Oh yes. The extraction of that boulder now makes the plans ready to go.”

“Not exactly. Mr. McIntyre. There’s one more thing that must be done first.” I reached around and tugged the towel until it joined the jacket on the floor. “There. Now plans are set.”

“Oh yes, that’s good, Ms. Gibbons. I like a lady that remembers all the details. Now, lean over the desk and hold the edge.” I did as he said, leaning over and closing my eyes, ready for him. Beyond ready. His hands roamed my body, starting at my ankles and moving north, stopping so he could grip my bottom and then he moved up to my back and shoulders. “Perfection. Your body is better than the best architectural design any man could come up with. It’s a masterpiece.”

SynopsisHe was someone who belonged in my wildest fantasies instead of a rest stop in the middle of Nebraska.

A sexy, cocky, Australian named Chance was the last person I expected to run into on my cross-country drive.

When my car broke down, we made a deal. Next thing I knew, we were traveling together, spending sexually-tense nights in hotels and taking unplanned detours.

My ordinary road trip turned into the adventure of a lifetime. It was all fun and games until things got intense.

I wanted him, but Chance wouldn’t make a move. I thought he wanted me too, but something was holding him back.

I wasn’t supposed to fall for the cocky bastard, especially when I knew we’d be going our separate ways.

Collette West grew up as somewhat of a jock-nerd hybrid. Entering the world three weeks premature, her dad nearly missed her birth because he had seats behind the dugout for a sold-out, highly-anticipated match-up between two of baseball’s biggest rivals. Not to be outdone, her book-loving mom taught her how to read by the time she was three. A love of the game coupled with an appreciation for the written word were instilled in Collette’s impressionable brain from a young age. No wonder her characters believe in the philosophy: sports + romance = a little slice of heaven.

Splitting her time between the Pocono Mountains and Manhattan, Collette indulges her inner fangirl by going to as many games as she can from hockey to baseball and downloading every sports romance novel in existence onto her iPad. When she’s not clicking away on her laptop, she enjoys walking her dog in Central Park, satisfying her caffeine craving at the Starbucks on Broadway and keeping an eye out for Mr. Right. But above all, she loves dishing with her readers. Email her at collette_west@yahoo.com.
