Synopsis

Aidan Hughes

I was cruel to Deidre La Russo. Said things I should never say to a woman.

Seen things happen to her.

Things darker than the bottle of liquor I consume.

I felt helpless.

Defeated.

The memories are more tortuous than the act of her torture.

Then she walks back into my life, only she’s not alone.

Deidre La Russo

I have my reasons for leaving.

I lived through hell.

I was beaten, tortured. Drugged.

I have secrets.

I have to tell them.

Danger brought us all together.

Danger may rip us apart.

Excerpt

Aidan Hughes. I can focus on him. No, not him. Images of his bruised and battered face invade my mind, mixing with those voices.

Aidan can never see me like this. He’s lodged in my head too. I should hate him after the things he said to me, the way he treated me after we gave in to the carnal desire we felt for each other. I know I treated the man poorly, but he just kept getting under my skin. His deep voice. His bright blue eyes. His muscular body. His six-foot-something frame. I hate him.

Oh, I heard him, all right, demanding for me to hang on while I felt like I was going to die every time Royal pierced me with his knife. He even called me baby a few times. He’s a callous asshole. A user. A fucking tool of a man, and I don’t want to see him. I’ve gone insane. I don’t want or need anybody. They can let me die. Yes. The only way to get rid of any and all of these voices in my head is to die.

“Deidre.” An older woman comes into my room, followed by my dad. The look of concern on their faces stops me in the tracks of plotting ways to kill myself.

“I’m Doctor Jenkins. Your father here has told me you want to leave. I cannot discharge you. This is the best place for you to be. You have to heal. Now, are you in any pain, sweetheart? Would you like the nurse to give you—”

“Noooooooooooooo! Quit saying I have to heal! You don’t know what I need or have to do! None of you do!” I scream. Her body jolts back.

I’ve fucking had it with these people not listening to me. I start to thrash in the small bed. Kick the covers off. My body is so weak I have no idea what the hell I’m doing. All I know is if they won’t help me, then I will help myself. I will get out of here. I will. Then I will die. The howling laughter, the slimy deep tones, their faces, they will all be gone.

Excerpt

Do you know what hope smells like? Let me tell you…

First, I have to explain where I am. At the bottom of my small garden is a gate. A plain wooden gate that needs one hinge fixed. Beyond the gate are a few steps carved into a grassy bank. It’s down those steps that you can reach the beach.

The Atlantic ocean pounds the centuries old cliffs, the rugged shards of black rock snake their way into the sea and the course yellow sand whips around my feet. I breathe in deeply. The smell of exposed seaweed and salty air fill my senses. That is what hope smells likes.

For a long time there had been no hope. I was at the bottom of a well, in the worst place I could be. I couldn’t see the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. I felt nothing but sorrow and sadness. And pain, so much pain. It has been a long journey but I need to take you back a couple of years, not quite to the beginning but to a pivotal point in my life. A time when I thought everything was going to be okay, when I thought my life was turning around. A time when I had plans and I believed I had the future I longed for. But I was wrong. It’s only now that I have hope.

And what am I hoping for? A reply to an email I have just sent.

Excerpt

I push off from the tree, turning to leave the park, when an unexpected sight gives me pause. A man running in my direction. He’s not sprinting, not jogging, but moving at his own custom pace. A pace I decided, in that split second, to call the “holy hot pace.” Because, well, he’s hot.

Well over six feet tall, shirtless, in just black running shorts and sneakers.

I’ve only ever seen a body that mind-numbingly perfect once. Ever. The sweat-coated ‘holy hot pace’ runner is Sexy Demon. The penthouse-living Upper East Sider who’d dived into the back of my cab a few weeks ago.

He’s running a straight path, yet his eyes are everywhere, unfocused, a light frown between his brows. Like he’s searching for something and frustrated at the same time.

As he runs by the maple tree, his gaze flicks over me, pauses on me for a beat, and I hold my breath, wondering if he’ll remember me, but those unfocused eyes skip to something else, and he keeps on running, right past me.

Shrugging, I make to leave the park again, but then an image of his bare throat, arched back, the same image that’s been taunting me for weeks, flashes before my eyes and my heart skips a beat.

Oh Lord, we’re in trouble,’ Rational Lotty sighs.

Indeed. Sucking in a deep breath, I make a U-turn, and run after him.

Excerpt

“Just so I have a baseline,” Vani asked, “what do you already know about parapsychology?”

I bit my thumbnail and considered whether to be honest or diplomatic.

“Go ahead,” Ben quietly urged. “What you really think, remember?

I shot him a “don’t push me” look. “Okay, well,” I began, “all I know is that in grad school, they said it was a pseudoscience that kind of died out in the Eighties. They also said that a lot of scam artists were involved, and it had ties to the occult. And I’ve seen that reality TV show Ghost Trappers; they mention parapsychology on there sometimes.”

“Not bad,” Vani said. “Ghost Trappers is the extent of many people’s exposure. Allow me to tell you what parapsychology really is.” She turned to the board and wrote the definition as she spoke it. “It’s the scientific study of psychological phenomena that cannot be explained by the known laws of nature.”

So it was an actual field of study? I sat up straighter in my chair. “You mean things like aura reading, and being an empath?”

“Exactly.” Vani pointed to the hand she’d drawn. “There are five categories of these phenomena. The first is psychokinesis, in which the mind interacts with other people or objects from a distance. There are several sub-categories—the most well-known being telekinesis—but the only one we use here is psychic healing, which encompasses empathic submergence and empath healing.”

“Empath healing is the technique I told you about earlier,” Ben added.

“Right, I remember,” I said, trying to look cool rather than incredulous. “But wait, telekinesis? Isn’t that moving things with your mind?”

“Yes, although the jury’s still out on whether that exists,” Vani said. “Personally, I’ve never seen any evidence of it.”

“That’s because it’s bogus,” Ben grumbled.

Kai tsk-tsked. “Well, aren’t we judgy this afternoon.”

“As I was saying,” Vani said crisply, “that’s the first category.” She wrote “psychokinesis” along one finger of the hand. “The second category is clairvoyance, or the ability to see and know things about people or objects that others can’t. Aura reading fits in here, along with your other empathic gifts.”

In answer to my questioning look, Ben said, “Your abilities to pick up on other people’s emotions and to form the filaments you told us about.”

I nodded, feigning comprehension.

Vani wrote “clairvoyance” on the second finger. “Third is mediumship, or the ability to communicate with the spirits of the dead. I know you must have heard of that, Cate.”

“Yes.” Those scam psychic hotlines—and any number of scary movies I’d watched in high school that featured psychics sitting in dark rooms, wearing turbans and hoop earrings and staring into crystal balls.

Kai held out his arm and pretended to examine his fingernails. “That’s my area of expertise, in case you were wondering.”

“Oh, wow.” I forced myself to smile and nod. Kai, a medium; that seemed to fit. Anyone who believed they could talk to the dead must have an extremely fertile imagination, and Kai definitely had one if he believed in crystals and totems. Not that I doubted Kai’s sincerity, just his sense of reality.

Excerpt

THERE WAS A STRANGE sensation bubbling just beneath the surface of his skin. Ransom couldn’t put his finger on what it was, but he knew it had to do with his brother and that hug they were forced to share. All he knew was it was warm, comforting, and the underlying meaning he refused to acknowledge set him on edge.

He wasn’t ready to let go of his anger. Some bridges weren’t meant to be crossed, not after so much water had passed beneath it.

The knowledge that his brother couldn’t guard his heart any better than he could made no difference at all, though he knew it should. The problem was that they’d always had a sort of rivalry between them, taking from one another, especially when it came to women. So in his mind, he’d been scorned. Left out to dry like a piece of wet laundry.

And now the very fabric of him was wrinkled, and he didn’t know the first thing about how to iron himself out.

Except that a faint voice in his head whispered to him, and it sounded suspiciously like Dani’s name.

They sat in his living room, the silence a pulsing beat of sexual tension that no one could deny. He wanted her, and he knew, despite her best efforts to deny it, she wanted him, too.

He’d enjoyed having her with him at the party. Hadn’t realized just how much it would mean to him or how much it would affect him. Just by being there, she’d calmed his nerves, as well as silencing the little voice inside his head that wanted nothing more than to climb back in his car and leave.

But she’d served as a safety net. A lifeline. Someone he could lean on, even if she didn’t know it. And she clearly didn’t judging by the way she sat so stiff now, her shyness calling to him. Begging for him to take it away.

He only knew of one way to do that, and he didn’t think she’d go for it.

Sex was something that Ransom had grown accustomed to using in order to bury his feelings, in order to keep the overwhelming depression from sucking him down into an inescapable oblivion. Somehow, he didn’t think it would be the same with Dani. It was a terrifying thought, and the only thing that kept him from jumping on her and ravishing her small, curvy body.

Hers was a body made for sin, and Ransom was inclined to explore every dark corner. Somehow he resisted, though only barely.
