Can the ending of one dream lead to the beginning of a new one?
Will Gartner made a lot of mistakes in the past, but he finally has his life together. Leaving his reckless teenage years behind, he’s recently graduated from college and is all set to move from Las Vegas to New York to start a prestigious new job. But when an unexpected guest shows up at his farewell party, all Will’s dreams are smashed to pieces. Suddenly, he’s taking a crash course in how to be a father to the five-year-old daughter he never knew existed.
Will changes direction and heads to Harmony Creek, Ohio, and the only person who’s ever really been there for him, his brother Chase. Chase saved Will in the past, but will he rescue him yet again? Some lessons—like fatherhood—can only be learned by doing. Is Will up to the challenge?
And where does Emma Metzger fit into Will’s suddenly upside-down world? Emma knows all about his troubled past and sees his hesitation to commit to his new daughter. How can she commit her heart to a man who doesn’t know what the word means?
Chase always told Will “Follow your heart. Always try to be a good man.” But will following his heart be enough for his daughter, and for Emma?
The After of Us is a story about letting go of old dreams, and, in the process, discovering what you really needed to make you happy was right there in front of you all along.
The After of Us is a spin-off of the Judge Me Not series and a standalone novel.
New Adult Romance/Coming of Age Romance
“This is the after of us from before, who we were, and who we were becoming.”
The After of Us was a great read, it was not only a wonderful love story between a couple, but a love story about a family! Will has made plenty of mistakes in his past, and his life is finally settled and moving in the right direction. He’s graduated from college and moving to New York for a great job. So, imagine his surprise when he learns he has a 5-year-old daughter the night before he leaves for his new job. He goes to the only place he can…his brother and his family in Ohio. While there, he meets Emma again. They shared a special night when they were both teenagers, and neither one has forgotten it, but both for different reasons. Will has to decide whether to stay in the small town and give happiness a chance with Emma or move to New York never knowing what might have been.
Let me begin by saying I was not a huge fan of Will at first, and I mean at all. Yes, he’s worked hard to overcome his past, yet there was still a selfishness to him. However, when he first meets his daughter, Lily, I started to change my mind. No, he isn’t the perfect father at first, but he’s trying. And, I began to see his self-centeredness slowly crumble every moment he spends with her. It was wonderful seeing him become the man he was meant to be. Emma begins to soften Will as well. She’s sweet and loving, especially with Lily, yet she doesn’t cut Will any slack either…even though she loves him. She continually makes him look inside himself and become a better man and to move toward his dreams.
This is only the second book I have read by S. R. Grey, and I loved it as much as I did the first book. She writes a great romance, but the romance isn’t the only thing going on within the pages. She addresses very relevant and deep issues, this one deals with the real issue of drug addiction. I really liked that one of the chapters was told from Lily’s mother’s POV…that was a tough one to read. I loved watching Will not only fall deeper in love with Emma but also with his precious daughter, Lily! Another great read from S.R. Grey!!!!
