Wow! What a story! It’s emotional, but I loved it. Joshua found a way into my heart from the very beginning, and he never let it go. He is a good guy even though he is in love with his girlfriend’s younger sister. Things with Emily were disintegrating before he and Rebel ever shared that kiss. Oliver did a great job of including flashbacks that gave me the whole story of Joshua, Rebel, and Emily. The chemistry between Joshua and Rebel was powerful even when she was younger despite the fact that neither knew the other felt the same way. They have both grown since those early days and have grown into great adults despite their pain and loss.
Rebel is one of those unforgettable characters. Her light and passion bring so much color to the story and her aura leaps off the pages. I could easily see why Joshua fell so hard for her. She has loved him for as long as she can remember, but she never let him know because of her love for her sister. But, I have to be honest, it was always evident these two belonged together.
I have long been a fan of Tess Oliver, but this is the BEST book she has ever written. It is emotional, and she makes sure her readers will feel every single one of those emotions. The characters were powerful and pulled me right into the story. There were times I swooned, and the steam definitely heated up my Kindle. The sex scenes were definitely HOT, but they were also beautiful and symbolized the magic between Joshua and Rebel! LOVED, LOVED this book. Tess Oliver really outdid herself with this one!!!!

Aside from my own Sal Raniero, there are two lead male characters which I love. The first one is Merc from JA Huss’ “Meet Me in the Dark.” I adored having his story and while I could go on and on about that and even drool a bit, I won’t. I think the thing the made Merc stand out more than other characters was the sheer realistic portrayal in which Ms. Huss wrote him. During the story, he never comes across as inaccessible. He could be any guy in any given neighborhood. Though he isn’t without his flaws, his emotional bank is tied up inside, but that only furthers the belief as so many men are not willing or able to let those they care about truly be close to the them. Merc and Ms. Huss taught me much about pacing and staying true to the character’s tempo. For a human male, my vote overwhelmingly goes to Merc. Kudos to Ms. Huss for creating such a memorable character. This brings me to my favorite lizard man himself, Uyane Meoraq, the Sword of Sheul in R. Lee Smith’s “The Last Hour of Gann.” Perhaps my love of Meoraq springs from hours of playing EverQuest in my younger days and loving the iksar males like no other. He is without a doubt one of the best anti-heroes ever. You desperately long to hate every single thing about him—he’s arrogant, cocky, and foremost, a bastard, yet you end up falling in love with this unforgettable, savage beast. He serves the broken alpha male role up nicely, and Ms. Smith never diverts from maintaining his space within the world. All too often in science-fiction/fantasy, we end up with characters of a different race behaving with more humanistic qualities as the story progresses. Through it all, Ms. Smith remains true to his character, his voice, and his scaled, skewed belief system. I found the spiritual moments profound and touching. Not to mention, I love the use of religion – even a fictional one – in books. This book triggered my own needs to include that as a quality in my writing as Sal deals with his Catholic upbringing, seeking forgiveness for the sins he cannot control. Though I have not finished the series, B.B. Blaque’s Jordan in the “Beautiful Evil” is an incredible, beautifully written ass. He has all the addictive qualities of a highly-coveted book boyfriend.
