About Dirt

A hard-hitting, emotional new series from New York Times bestselling author Cassia Leo.

Jack and I had everything. Then, in one brutal instant, the universe tilted on its side, discarding us into black nothingness.

Now, I have a cocky a**hole for a husband.

The only way we communicate anymore is when we’re fighting or f**king.

With nothing left to lose, I write Jack a goodbye letter and head for Portland, where I quickly meet a neighbor who helps me find a job.

My new neighbor—broody, tattooed ex-soldier Isaac Evans—is complicated. Nevertheless, we form a fast friendship, bonding over our mutual desire to create something beautiful from the wreckage of our lives.

But despite the distance between us, Jack and I are still trying to make things work—fighting and f**king dirtier than ever. And he doesn’t appreciate my new friendship with Isaac. Not one f**king bit.

Chapter 1

Laurel

I hugged Jack Jr. tightly against my breast, and he molded his soft, warm body to mine. His eyes remained closed as his tiny fingers curled around the fabric of my blouse, his rosy lips puckering as he geared up for more food.

“You sucked me dry, little fella,” I whispered, leaning in to press my nose against the downy-soft, golden hair on the top of his head. I inhaled his scent and my muscles unspooled. “But I’ll be back to feed you soon. I promise.”

Why do babies smell so damn good?

Before I got pregnant with Junior, my favorite smell was orange blossoms. As a teenager, I often got scolded by my mom for picking the flowers off the orange tree in our backyard in Portland. I’d rub the creamy petals between my fingers, bruise them with my fingernails, then sniff my hand for hours until the scent wore off.

When I was pregnant with Junior, my favorite scent became the rich aroma of the forbidden coffee I could no longer drink.

After Junior was born, and my decaf days came to a glorious end, I realized how wrong I’d been. There was absolutely no scent as sweet and soul-quieting as the smell of the top of a baby’s head. Bonus points if the baby was lying peacefully on your chest sound asleep.

“Are you ever going to put him down?”

I flicked my head sideways, startled by Jack’s clear, baritone voice.

He stood in the doorway of Junior’s nursery, the silhouette of his six-foot-three athletic body framed by the warm light in the hallway. His head was tilted to the side. He’d probably been standing there admiring us for a while. After six years together, I knew Jack’s body language and facial expressions better than I knew my own face.

I stood from the rocking chair and stole one more sniff of Junior’s head before I placed him gently on his back in the center of the crib. I adjusted the left sleeve of his pajamas, pulling it down to make sure it covered his entire chubby arm. I didn’t want to imagine him waking up cold and alone in here.

Jack appeared at my side as I switched on the video baby monitor. “He’s going to be fine,” he murmured, reaching down to stroke the soft patch of hair on Junior’s head. “In fact, he’ll probably enjoy some time alone. After all, he is just like his daddy; sometimes, we need a break from the constant attention from the ladies.”

I rolled my eyes and headed for the door. “Making jokes only makes leaving him slightly less scary, you know,” I said as we stepped into the hallway of our five-bedroom dream home in Hood River, Oregon. I couldn’t wait to fill up every one of these bedrooms with brothers and sisters for Jack Jr.

Jack chuckled as he followed closely behind me. “Less scary is an improvement,” he replied, grabbing my hand to stop me in the middle of the corridor. “You promised Junior you’d be back soon. Can you also make me a promise?”

The hallway lights made his dark hair look glaringly shiny, but I couldn’t help but notice how weary his blue eyes looked tonight. Since Junior arrived three months ago, I’d been so focused on my baby boy’s vulnerability, his scent, his beauty, I hadn’t slowed down enough to appreciate how those were the same qualities that made me fall in love with Jack.

Suddenly, my worries about leaving Junior with my mother for the evening evaporated. All I wanted to do was kiss Jack, grab hold of that dark hair and make love to him for hours. I wanted to replace the weariness in his eyes with dark hunger, or maybe a glint of mischief.

I squeezed his hand and smiled at the thought of possibly having sex with him in public tonight. We hadn’t done that in a while.

“What kind of promise?” I asked.

He shook his head. “Nope, you’re not allowed to ask. Just promise me you’ll say yes.”

My stomach vaulted at the sound of those words. They were the same words Jack spoke when he asked me to marry him. I wondered what he would ask this time.

The phrase “just promise me you’ll say yes” had become like an inside joke, our own private, unspoken promise to each other that we would always do whatever it took to stay together. The last time he had uttered this phrase, he asked me to stop taking my birth control pills. With Junior here, it was easy to trust that whatever Jack asked me for this time would turn out to be exactly what I needed.

I tilted my head back so I could look up and into his crystal-blue eyes. “Yes, I can make you a promise.”

His expression became sober. “Promise me you’ll be present tonight.” He fixed me with a piercing gaze as his large hand cupped my face. “It’s just you and me for the next three hours. Promise me.”

I smiled. “I promise. Just you and me. And I’ll even put my cell phone on vibrate.” As I said the words, a sharp finger of fear prodded my subconscious, telling me it was a bad idea to risk missing a phone call tonight.

The exhaustion in Jack’s eyes melted away as he smiled. “I can deal with that, but you have to promise me one more thing.”

“What’s that?”

His smile turned almost menacing as he looped his arm around my waist and drew me close. “Promise me you’ll lemme smash that blonde bombshell booty,” he said, landing a light swat on my ass.

I shook my head as I recalled how we often had sex in public during our first year together, in our senior year at Oregon State University, Cascades. For some reason, once we graduated and moved in together, having sex in public seemed like something we couldn’t get away with so easily. We decided public sex-hibitions — or throw downs, as we more commonly referred to them — would be reserved for special occasions like anniversaries or vacations.

Truthfully, Jack and I kicked off our relationship by having sex on the first date. He was always a very difficult man to resist. When he showed up at my apartment to pick me up that night, I couldn’t resist his suggestion that we should stay in and make paper masks of ourselves, then put them on and ask each other first date questions as if we were the other person. I had never laughed so much on any date. Ever. But when he asked — while pretending to be me — if I’d ever had sex with someone on the first date, I couldn’t help but respond with, “I’m Jack-fucking-Stratton. I’ve fucked a lot of girls on the first date. But none as gorgeous as you.”

Jack always knew how to keep things fresh and alarmingly sexy. Six years in and my body still craved him almost every second of every day.

Today was our three-year wedding anniversary. We’d only had sex twice since I gave birth to Junior three months ago, and both of those times were truly awkward.

The first time was painful. My C-section incision hadn’t fully healed yet, and even trying to have sex with him behind me was uncomfortable. The second time we tried, Jack was so afraid of hurting me, he stopped midway through. There’d been a lot of oral sex happening in this house since then.

Luckily, a few weeks had passed since our last attempt, and I had repeatedly assured him I was fully healed up now. I was certain that even if the sex did hurt a little, it would still be worth it. I couldn’t understand couples that didn’t consider sex an important part of a relationship. I never felt more complete, more present, more alive than when my body and mind were entwined with Jack’s.

I smiled as I wrapped my arms around his waist. “I think I know just the place for a proper throw down.”

He wiggled his eyebrows. “Ooh. Tell me more.”

As he leaned in to kiss me, my mother’s voice interrupted us.

“Are you two making out again?” she said, standing at the top of the stairs with her hands on her hips as she gawped at us. “Well, don’t let me stop you.”

Jack laughed and I shook my head as we moved toward her.

“We’re just trying to keep you entertained while you’re on vacation, Beth,” Jack said.

My mother cocked an eyebrow. “If I wanted to watch porn, I’d open up your laptop and have a look at your internet history.”

“Mom, don’t be gross,” I protested, trying not to laugh.

Jack smiled as he held out his elbow for my mom to grab hold as they descended the stairs in front of me. “I made a special collection of links for you. They’re in a folder labeled Tantric Geriatric. You’ll love it.”

I rolled my eyes. Jack and my mother exchanged jabs like this all day.

My mother was staying with us for a few days, so Jack and I could have some time to ourselves and get some much-needed uninterrupted sleep. She was leaving tomorrow to go back to the house where I grew up in Portland. Though she pretended as if she was desperate to get home to her Craftsman cottage in the city, and I even teased her about how she was dying to get back so she could see the handsome new neighbor she’d been going on about, I knew she was going to miss Jack’s pretend insults as much as she would miss Junior and me.

My mother practically shoved me toward the front door. “I order you to go have fun,” she said, smiling as Jack opened the door and stepped outside. “And don’t come home until you’re too drunk to walk.”

I shook my head. “Thanks, Mom. Please call if you need anything. And don’t answer the door for anyone. There’s a house that got broken into a few streets away.”

She waved off my paranoia. “Stop worrying so much. We’ll be fine. See you later, babe.”

I blew her a kiss, then I closed the door behind me.

* * *

“I have to admit, having sex on the waterfront was one of my favorite public throw downs ever,” Jack said, pulling his Tesla into the long driveway of our four-acre estate. “But do we really have to wait until our fourth anniversary to do it again?”

I tugged the silky fabric of my skirt straight as I pressed my thighs together. Though my body was still raw with the evidence of the dirty deed we’d just committed, I couldn’t wait to get Jack inside and pounce on him again. I hadn’t realized how much I missed the sensation of him moving inside me, and how good he was at making me feel beautiful.

“We can do that anytime we can snag a babysitter,” I replied as he turned the car off.

He made no move to exit the Tesla. “Well, babycakes, you’d better get ready to interview a fuck-ton of babysitters.”

I laughed. “Babycakes? That’s a new one.”

Jack rarely used the same term of endearment twice in a row. He liked to keep me guessing.

He scrunched up his nose. “Yeah, that one was kind of creepy. Now that I’ve tried it out, I think I can bury that one in the nickname graveyard.”

“Try the incinerator,” I said, reaching for the door handle.

“Duly noted,” he replied, exiting the vehicle.

Jack and I glided unhurriedly along the flagstone walkway, which was lined with sparkling pathway lights. As we made our way toward the steps leading up to the covered porch, I stopped in the middle of the path and closed my eyes as I inhaled the sweet scent of the lavender and honeysuckle I’d planted with my mom’s help.

That was when I made a wish, a corny wish, but I didn’t care.

I wished that every person could find someone they loved as much as I loved Jack. I wished every child could feel as loved as Junior was. And I wished every anniversary could be as perfect as this one.

“No… No, no, no!” Jack’s voice grew louder with each no.

They say mother’s intuition is scientifically proven to exist. I knew by the tone of Jack’s voice, without even opening my eyes, that my world would never be the same. I knew in that instant, I would regret leaving Jack Jr. tonight for the rest of my life.

Though I knew something was wrong, I wasn’t prepared for what we found.

At some point, while we were lost in our blissful celebration, the front door of our home had been forced open. This discovery was what had made Jack cry out in disbelief. Father’s intuition must also be a thing, because he told me later that, even though the door was still closed, the moment he saw the gouges in the wood near the handle, he had felt that same sense of dread. That feeling that the universe had suddenly tilted on its side, discarding us into black nothingness.

The house was ransacked.

Furniture upended, paintings and flatscreen televisions torn off the walls, shards of shattered vases littered the floors. Complete and utter chaos.

The master bathroom doorknob looked as if it had been shot off. We found my mother’s lifeless form huddled against the bathtub, my baby boy’s dead body clutched tightly in her arms.

CHRISTIE’S REVIEW

****4.5 STARS****

His to Corrupt by Ava Sinclair is a sexy, steamy, good girl falling for a bad boy romance. Clara is a sweet, beautiful woman. She doesn’t have much confidence in herself. She lives a content life. She has a great job as a high school English teacher at a good Catholic school. But, her life is missing something….passion. She obeys the rules even if sometimes she does not believe they are right. Jackson is the exact opposite of her. He is tattooed and rides a motorcycle. He isn’t one for rules, and has paid his time in prison for not living by rules. Clara and Jackson should never cross paths, and she definitely isn’t his type AT ALL! Yet, when these two meet, it’s explosive. He wants to taste her innocence, and he awakens the wild side in her that she keeps hidden.

Jackson saves her life one night outside his nightclub. As repayment, he wants a date with her. She knows what a huge mistake it would be, but she also can’t help but think she might be missing something life-altering if she doesn’t. She has no illusions. She knows her definition of a date is not the same as Jackson’s. The faster she runs, the faster he chases her.

I loved the romance in the book. It is definitely steamy and sexy. However, that is only one important part of the book. The issues of sin, goodness, and judgment are addressed within the pages. Sinclair does it in a brilliant way, using parallels with the classic, The Scarlet Letter.

Clara is teaching this particular book in her class. As she is teaching her students, the parallels between her story and Hester’s become obvious. Hester was judged by her community, just as Clara will be judged by the people in her town, and especially those she works with. Her relationship with Jackson will never be accepted by her superiors at the school. He’s a tattooed, motorcycle riding ex-con, and according to them, he has no business with someone as innocent as Clara. Yet, those making those judgements are people who are hiding skeletons in their own closets.

His to Corrupt is a steamy romance but it goes much deeper asking us how we judge people ourselves. People are complicated, and what we see on the surface isn’t what defines us. Clara and Jackson are perfect examples of never judging a book by its cover! Looking forward to reading more from Ava Sinclair.

Excerpt

I made forty bucks at VIN’s which is really good considering it’s just a dive bar, and HEAT is bloody packed tonight. Josh added two additional fire shows to appease the crowd and we’re making a killing. The usual banter between Drew and I has been on fire with all the people giving additional tips for funny bartenders.

Sliding three cocktails down the line, I spin to grab a clean towel when my freaking world comes to a halt.

“Hi Ryan.” Everything freezes.

Not just my body, but the blood in my veins, the heart in my chest, and the air in my lungs, they all freeze at that voice. The stillness is replaced by a vibration in my bones as I slowly turn around.

Messy, overgrown hair falls in blonde locks over familiar gray eyes. Jesus Christ…

“You were harder to find then I thought.” What the fuck, how is it- this isn’t- I don’t. I don’t know what’s happening. “Especially since you’re not blonde anymore.

I don’t speak, all I’m capable of doing is staring. I examine his nose, that despite being broken countless times remains straight. My eyes travel to his strong jaw that’s slightly dusted with facial hair. Jesus Christ, it’s actually him.

“You alight, Hales?” Drew’s hand falls on my lower back, and despite my hate for being touched, he grounds me as I stare into the eyes of my long lost brother. “Move along friend.”

Kaylan lets out a dark chuckle that isn’t friendly. “How about you go back to work, friend. This is important.”

“I’m sure it is, but this is a business and she has work to do. So, I’m going to ask politely that you order your drink and move along.”

“I’m not here to drink, I’m here to talk to Ryan.” I shudder at the name.

Ryan’s dead. She died in that hell hole a year and a half ago.

CHRISTIE’S REVIEW

*****5 STARS*****

Wow! What an intense and emotional read! I knew from reading the synopsis that Broken might be hard to read at times. Haley really is a broken individual, and horrible things happened to her. Ellie Messe did an amazing job of showing me what she endured without going into graphic detail.

It’s been hard for me to write the part of this review in which I describe the main character, Haley. There aren’t enough words to adequately express how extraordinary she is. She is broken, and she could have just allowed herself to be tossed aside and given up. No, she didn’t do that. She is the bravest character in this book. Yes, Parker, the man who loves is her brave knight, but she is the bravest knight. She picked herself up from the ashes of her life, and like a phoenix rose again to make a new life for herself, ironically in Pheonix, Arizona. She ran away to save her life, but she had no idea she was running to something she never had…family, love, trust, and a home.

Parker was an amazing character as well. He loved her, and he loved her even when she insisted she was unlovable. He proved to her again and again that he loved her for her. Her past never mattered to him even though he would have given anything if she hadn’t had to endure what she did. I did get angry with him when he called her a coward when she ran, but I can understand his fear for her. Yet, I can understand why she made the decisions she did. That was what made her such a brave and unselfish character.

All the secondary characters, Josh, Maria, and especially Drew definitely added another layer to the story. They were proof that family isn’t always the one that is connected by blood and biology but by making the choice to love each other. I think my heart belonged equally to Parker and Drew. Drew was the best kind of friend Haley could have had.

Broken has to be one of the best debut novels I have read. I didn’t even realize this was Ellie Messe’s first book until I looked for her other books on Amazon. Imagine my surprise!!!! This is a long book, and she informs her readers of that in the first pages of the book. In no way does it seems as long as it really is….yes, it’s that good! You dive in, and time just flies by. I was so glad to see my man, Drew, will be getting his own book! You better believe I will be waiting on that one!!!!!

Newly unemployed and devastated to learn she and her boyfriend are not on the same page, Cece returns to Clearwater, her hometown in Northern California wine country, hoping to find comfort for her broken heart with her family. Being back in Clearwater only adds to her stress, however, when she reluctantly agrees to help rescue a small-town production of The Nutcracker.

Having once been the ballerina that would make Clearwater famous, Cece’s return attracts attention, inspires gossip, and forces her to examine a decision she made years before at the most vulnerable time of her life. As old wounds are opened and secrets revealed, long-held beliefs about Cece’s childhood are challenged, leading her to question everything she thought she knew about family, love, and herself.

As Cece struggles to accept the truth, she lets go of one dream and discovers a new one, opening her heart to a purpose and a future she had never imagined.

CHRISTIE’S REVIEW

****4 STARS****

Long Dance Home is a warm, charming read great for this time of year. Cece is a woman with a plan. Years ago, she was on the verge of realizing her dream of being a ballerina dancing for a company, but those dreams were dashed. Now, she leaves nothing to chance. She has a job as at a gallery, and a boyfriend, Doug. She thinks he will be proposing to her soon. When she becomes unemployed and realizes her relationship with Doug may have reached the end, she returns home working as a dance instructor where she danced and trained as a child and teenager.

While this is a romance, it’s also a book about discovering who you really are. Cece does find herself torn between Doug and a new man, Brad. Don’t worry…there is no cheating. Most of the book is about Cece and her struggles. She really has to dig deep and figure out what she really wants in life. She did grow and mature by the end of the book, and I always enjoy those kinds of books.

It does take place during Christmas, so it’s a wonderful read for this time of year. The town of Clearwater and the secondary characters are part of what makes this a charming read.

About Julie Mayerson Brown

I am blessed to live on the beautiful Palos Verdes Peninsula, an oasis just outside of Los Angeles, with my family, three dogs, and hundreds of wild peacocks. I could say writing was my “first love,” as I’ve been telling stories to myself as long as I can remember. But sometimes we take a circuitous route toward self-discovery. It was not until I left the workforce to become an at-home mom that I discovered what I was meant to be. Something struck, and I decided, “I am a writer!” But saying I was one did not make me become one. Only years of hard work and dedication can do that.

I began by writing and publishing humorous essays based on the antics of my two young sons and on my successes and failures as a mother. They were busy years: by the time both boys were in school, I had become a founding member of a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting children and teens from abuse and exploitation. I served on the board and worked as an educator for the next fifteen years. All the while, I wrote whenever I could carve a few free minutes into my day. Time flew by, as time does, and before I knew it my sons could drive and make their own sandwiches. As I became increasingly irrelevant to their day-to-day survival, I took steps to fulfill my dream of becoming a full-time writer. It’s been a journey, to say the least, replete with countless rejections and a few wonderful wins.

Writing gives me tremendous joy. My hope is that with every book, readers find something they’re looking for, something they need, something that inspires and uplifts. Most of all, I hope my readers are captivated by the stories I tell and will fall in love with the characters I create.

AMAZING ANTHOLOGY!!!! Who can resist sexy athletes!!! These novellas are packed with them from all kinds of sports….baseball, hockey, MMA, and more!

I haven’t read any books by these talented ladies with the exception of Meghan Quinn, and I fell in love with all of them. All of the stories are packed with steam, romance to curl your toes, and irresistible heroes and the amazing women who love them. I had never been a huge fan of anthologies until I read one, and now I’m hooked. The stories are shorter, and I have found new authors whom I now love.

If you are looking for something to warm you up on cold, winter nights, I highly suggest reading this anthology written by some incredible writers.

She enjoys the simple things in life, like spending time with her family and friends, reading, HBO, Netflix and internet-stalking Stephen James. She reads between three to five books a week and firmly believes Crocs shoes and mullets should be outlawed.

Adriana Locke:

A contemporary romance author running on coffee and sticky kisses from my rowdy four little boys.

From Indiana, I’m a true Mid-Westerner. Life, for me, is about family, faith, and food. When I’m not running my kiddos around or having a lunch date of fajitas with my husband (and high school sweetheart), you can find me outside. I love a good sunny day almost as much as I love candy, random quotes, and steamy bad boys in fantastic books.

Mandi Beck:

Mandi Beck has been an avid reader all of her life. A deep love for books always had her jotting down little stories on napkins, notebooks, and her hand. As an adult she was further submerged into the book world through book clubs and the epicness of social media. It was then that she graduated to writing her stories on her phone and then finally on a proper computer.

A nursing student, mother to two rambunctious and somewhat rotten boys, and stepmom to two great girls away at college, she shares her time with her husband in Chicago where she was born and raised. Mandi is a diehard hockey fan and blames the Blackhawks when her deadlines are not met.

Emma Scott:

I write romances with flawed characters, characters with artistic hearts: builders, poets, and writers of various makes and models. I love to write book lovers; those who have found refuge, companionship, and escape in books, much as we do in real life. I like realism, honesty, authenticity in storytelling. I love to write about enduring love, soul-deep love, in as real a setting as I can make, but with big smooshy HEAs. I believe in diversity, open-mindedness, and inclusion. I like sweetness mixed with steam, love conquering all, and above all, hope. Love always wins.

Meghan Quinn:

A BLONDE AT HEART

Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.

Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.

Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!

Kate Stewart:

Kate Stewart lives in Charleston, S.C. with her husband, Nick, and her naughty beagle, Sadie. A native of Dallas, Kate moved to Charleston three weeks after her first visit, dropping her career of 8 years, and declaring it her creative muse. Kate pens messy, sexy, angst-filled contemporary romance as well as romantic comedy and erotic suspense because it’s what she loves as a reader. A lover of all things ’80s and ’90s, especially John Hughes films and rap, she dabbles a little in photography, can knit a simple stitch scarf for necessity only and does a horrible job of playing the ukulele. Aside from running a mile without collapsing, traveling is the only other must on her bucket list. On occasion, she does very well at vodka.

So far she’s written books in several romance sub-genres including new adult, contemporary, paranormal and romantic suspense.

Single mom Bridgette Dalton doesn’t have time to stop and smell the roses—not even in her own flower shop. But that doesn’t mean she hasn’t noticed Bodhi Booker. Her ruggedly handsome next-door neighbor would be the perfect candidate for a no-strings fling. Having loved and lost, Bridgette’s not ready to hand over her heart…but she could use a distraction.

Bodhi has one rule: never leave anyone behind. As a special operative, he knows that each new mission is more dangerous than the last. He’s never made a promise of forever to a woman, not even to the beautiful widow who has him tied in knots. And if there were anyone who could tempt him into putting down roots, it would be Bridgette and her adorable son.

But as his next deployment nears, they make a startling discovery. Their passion, meant only for the here and now, might already be blossoming into something more…

EXCERPT

She wrapped her hand around his long fingers, and his eyes heated, never wavering from hers. She’d never met a man so intense. Her nerves were on fire as she led him toward the table where some of her family members were talking. Awareness of the significance of her decision, of the signals she was sending, slammed into her, and she slowed to catch her breath. Was she ready for this?

He put a finger beneath her chin and lifted, as he’d done at his front door, gazing thoughtfully down at her. “Would you rather I leave?”

She shook her head. “No. I’m just . . . I’m good.” And she was. She’d needed that pause to acknowledge and accept what she was feeling. She was nervous, but she wanted this. She wanted him. Her smile came genuinely, and earned her one in return. “Come on.”

She became more nervous as they approached the table. Willow was practically sitting in Zane’s lap as they mooned over each other. Piper and Talia were scoping out some guy across the room, and Ben was in a heated discussion with Aurelia. She shouldn’t be nervous. This was her normal.

Except normal didn’t usually include holding hands with a man she wanted to strip naked and devour.

“Well, well, well. If it isn’t the naked neighbor.” Mischief danced in Piper’s eyes as she pushed to her feet and strutted around the table in her skinny jeans and slinky little blouse. She set her hands on her hips, running an assessing eye over Bodhi.

His jaw clenched.

“Bodhi, this is my sister Piper. She works in construction and is around guys all day, which means she has absolutely no filter. Please take her with a grain of salt.”

He flashed a cocky grin. “For the record, I had a towel on.”

“For the record,” Piper said, “she wished you didn’t.”

CHRISTIE’S REVIEW

****5 STARS****

What an amazing book! It has everything I love in a romance….steam but yet sweet, and it definitely pulled at my heartstings!

Bridgette is an amazing mother. She has had to be mother and father to her young son, Louie, after her husband died years ago. She has a great support group of family and friends, but she hasn’t found love again and doesn’t think she ever will. She is one tough cookie. She has worked hard to create a loving, warm life for Louie. However, she is lonely. She isn’t looking for a relationship but a distraction, and her sexy neighbor, Bodhi, might just fit the bill.

Bodhi is the whole package…sexy, sweet, intelligent, and has a great sense of humor. Not many women could resist him. Like Bridgette, he isn’t looking for a relationship either. He doesn’t hide that fact either. The chemistry between these two sizzles, and they believe a casual affair will work perfectly for them. As they spend more time together, and Louie seems to become more attached to Bodhi, things get complicated. This is the point that Bodhi and Bridgette have to decide if they can put their fears aside and make their own HEA.

I loved the characters, even the secondary ones, and as you can imagine, I adored little Louie. He could melt anyone’s heart. They added a deeper level to the book, and as always Foster writes with such emotion, I couldn’t help but be under Melissa Foster’s spell. Waiting for the next one in the series!

Sky Lacroux has finally realized her dream and opened her own tattoo shop in Provincetown, Massachusetts. She’s happy as can be, preparing the shop for its grand opening and renting a cottage in the Seaside community while renovations to her new apartment are being completed. The only thing missing is the one thing she longs for, and has no control over—love.

Sawyer Bass, a professional boxer, plays his guitar at a local bar to escape the painful reality of his father’s deteriorating health and a recent health warning of his own. But when he spots a stunning brunette across the room, escaping reality goes out the window, and the beautiful woman becomes the focus of his next song—and maybe even the rest of his life.

When Sawyer walks into Sky’s tattoo shop and sees the woman from the bar—Sky—the chemistry between them is instant. Sawyer is everything Sky could ever hope for in a man. He’s honest, loving, sensitive, and potently virile—but boxing goes against everything Sky believes in. The closer they become, the more she realizes that her alpha boxer is waging his own emotional battle—only the battle she thinks he’s waging isn’t the one that threatens to tear them apart.

Nights at Seaside is the sweet edition of the steamy romance novel Seaside Nights by Melissa Foster

 CHRISTIE’S REVIEW

****5 STARS*****

Sky first sees Sawyer at an open mic night, and she is immediately drawn to him. He’s a “handsome creature,” Sky’s words, but it is his voice and the lyrics of his song that pull her in. When he is notices her, he is drawn to her as well. When he later turns up at her tattoo shop for a new tattoo, the chemistry grows even more. When he notices the book of poetry by C.J. Moon, he is even more intrigued. She is unlike any woman he has ever met. That moment is magical, and the two fall pretty quickly for each other.

Something bigger than themselves has guided these two to each other. Sky is still mourning the loss of her mother, and Sawyer has begun to fill that void. She has an amazing group of family and friends, yet she is lonely. As they have found their soulmates, Sky has found herself wanting the same love they have found, and she thinks Sawyer could give her that. However, Sawyer is dealing with his father’s deteriorating health. He suffers from Parkinson’s Disease, and Sawyer needs income to pay for his continuing care. He is a boxer, and he does very well. But, he runs the risk of sacrificing his own health as he has had several concussions. He has been advised by his doctor to quit fighting, but he’s caught in a hard place. He is fighting for his family but risks losing them and now Sky.

This is the first book I have read by Addison Cole, and I am hooked. They really are sweet with just the right amount of heat. I loved her writing style…it’s almost poetic…much like Sawyer’s words. Both characters were incredibly well-developed and realistic. Cole did a wonderful job of tapping into both Sky and Sawyer’s emotions. That became abundantly clear when she first introduced Sawyer singing at open mic night.

People walked by outside, oblivious to the storm brewing inside himself, like everyone else in this place.”

That one passage gave me such insight to his character. Sky seems to be his calm in the storm. She’s loving, loyal, and supportive.

I highly recommend this book if you are looking for something sweet but yet with a little heat. I am looking forward to reading more from Addison Cole.

 CHRISTIE’S REVIEW

*****5 STARS*****

TOP READ OF 2017

It Must’ve Been the Mistletoe by L.P. Dover is a perfect, magical holiday romance! I’ve still got a smile on my face after finishing it!

The is the first year that I have read Christmas books, and this one is one of my favorites! Adeline is a high school history teacher, and she loves her job. It isn’t just a job for her; it’s her life. She loves history. As good as her life is, filled with a great family and good friends, she still hasn’t found true love. Her best friend is getting married, and she wants Adeline to meet his brother, Will.

Will is moving back to his hometown of Asheville, N.C. He worked hard in his family’s real estate business and has sacrificed his personal life to keep it successful. Leaving California, he is now looking forward to cutting back on work, enjoying life, and finds himself looking forward to meeting Adeline.

While at the wedding rehearsal, Adeline receives a special gift from the wedding planner, a locket. She loves it, but she has NO idea how this locket will change her life. This is where the story got very interesting. She finds herself back in the 1860s and falling in love with Will. I found myself falling in love with both of them too! Their romance is soooo sweet!

When the book returns back to the present time, I still had a lot of questions. I won’t go into them all because I don’t want to spoil anything, but I will say Dover brings the story full circle. The ending was PERFECT!!!!

Dover did a phenomenal job of capturing the magic of Christmas. I highly recommend reading if you are looking for a sweet, magical holiday read. If this doesn’t put you in the mood for Christmas, nothing will! The icing on the cake was the recipe for homemade biscuits at the end! YUM!!!

The last time I saw Nevada Kane, I was seventeen and he was loading his things into the back of his truck, about to embark on a fourteen-hour drive to the only college that offered him a full ride to play basketball.

I told him I’d wait for him. He promised to do the same.

But life happened. I broke my promise long before he ever broke his. And not because I wanted to.

We never saw each other again …

Until ten years later when Nevada unexpectedly returned to our hometown after an abrupt retirement from his professional basketball career.

Suddenly he was everywhere, always staring through me with that brooding gaze, never returning my smiles or “hellos.”

Over the years, I’d heard that he’d changed. And that despite his multi-million dollar contracts and rampant success, life hadn’t been so kind to him.

He was a widower.

And a single father.

And rumor had it, he’d spent his last ten years trying to forget me, refusing to so much as breathe my name … hating me.

But just like a rebound, he’s back.

And I have to believe everything happens for a reason.

Wall Street Journal and #1 Amazon bestselling author Winter Renshaw is a bona fide daydream believer. She lives somewhere in the middle of the USA and can rarely be seen without her trusty Mead notebook and ultra portable laptop.
