A Good Guys Series Novel
A Good Guys Series Novel
Some just talked to me.
They all had their vices.
I’m trailer trash in the slums of Carillon.
Until I met him, the mysterious neighbor who speaks through handwritten notes. He never shows his face, only comes and goes late at night, and I’m drawn to him like a moth to a flame.
I shouldn’t want him.
I don’t need him.
But when I close my eyes, he’s all I see.
He’s my addiction. The secret I keep close to my heart.
But sometimes things aren’t what they seem, and secrets don’t stay secrets forever.
And together, we’re just two lost souls on the wrong side of heaven.

One thunderstorm fades into another, and I keep my eyes on the stars, praying this one isn’t as bad as the last. It’s tornado season in Kansas—the only other force besides Tess that threatens me on a daily basis.
The crack of thunder is sharp, and the flashes of lightning so close together, I know it’s almost time to get in the closet. There’s no basement. No shelter to run to with a secret door to the underground. It’s just creaky floorboards, dust, and a protective layer of cotton pillows I bought at the dollar store.
If the storm were to pull the roof off the trailer, there’s not much else inside my room for the wind to whip around. The only other piece of furniture I own is a dresser. But I learned, whatever I put in there, Tess will take, so I keep my clothes in the trunk in the closet. The little bit of money I have is kept in a secret compartment in the floor. It’s not much, but I save every penny I earn from babysitting jobs around the trailer park.
Over the summer months, I try to pick up as many nights as I can because, without school, I spend too much time in the trailer. Too much time with Tess leads to problems.
Last night, we argued about my chest. She said my boobs were getting too big and that my mother probably had a matching set, just like all the other whores in town. If I knew anything about my mom, I’d disagree, but Tess could be right, so I didn’t bother trying to convince her otherwise.
As much as I hate Tess, she’s all I have. When my dad died, Tess decided to keep me. She said something about the money from the government helping to pay the bills. I’m not stupid. I know all that money goes up her nose and feeds her habit.
Sometimes, when Tess is exceptionally bitchy, I almost wish I had gone into the foster system. At least then I’d have had a chance at happiness. Because living in Carillon is nothing but hell. A hell I can’t escape until I turn eighteen and graduate high school.
Three hundred sixty-four days separate me and freedom.
I am me. Alone and by myself.

What He Doesn’t Know by Kandi Steiner

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Photographer: Perrywinkle Photography, Lauren Perry
Cover Designer: Kandi Steiner
On the northeast side of town, there is a house.
The house was once magical, filled with love and joy and plans for the future.
Inside its walls are many things that belong to me — my books, the china from my mother on my wedding day, the beautiful cage once home to two birds, now empty, just like me.
And a man.
A man who also belongs to me.
A man I no longer wish to keep.
A man who, no doubt, has not slept, though the sun is rising. Because the house where he waits is where I laid my head to rest every night for eight years. Until last night.
No one who knows me would believe Charlie Pierce, the quiet, bookish girl who never made waves is pulling out of the driveway of a man who isn’t her husband.
But they don’t know me at all.
I don’t even know me.
They say there are two sides to every story, and I suppose in most cases, that’s true. But the one I live inside of? It has three.
On the northeast side of town, there is a house.
But there is no longer a home.

Kandi Steiner is a Creative Writing and Advertising/Public Relations graduate from the University of Central Florida living in Tampa. Kandi works full time as a social media specialist, but also works part time as a Zumba fitness instructor and blackjack dealer.
Kandi started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic (like most girls brought up on Disney movies).
When Kandi isn’t working or writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys beach days, movie marathons, live music, craft beer and sweet wine – not necessarily in that order.

Then everything changed, and together we bent every rule we’d ever made… until they broke. Our need for each other led us to the lies we told. Mistakes we made.
We’re tangled and twisted—bound by our desire—but anything less than all of Nora will never be enough. Now this knot in my stomach only gets tighter, wondering if I can accept and love her for who she is.
Will it even be enough for her to love me back?

I’m lying to myself, but I can’t stop.
At least, not until Reagan’s hands bring me to life. He lays claim to me like no one else and makes promises I can’t keep.
I push him away because he deserves more, but wherever I go, he always pulls me back.
My heart is tethered to his. Across miles. Through every lonely night apart. The feeling of him never goes away.
Love never lets go.

Every scar tells a story…
Some are etched on the skin, for the whole world to see.

By the time I arrived at the inn for dinner, I was a goddamn mess. Sweat was running down my back from the heat, even after changing my shirt twice. I’d changed my mind three times on whether to bring flowers for Cora, doubling back to the house at the last minute to grab them after I firmly decided to leave them at home.
When I finally arrived, I was a solid twenty minutes late and probably looked like a psychopath from all the sweat and the mangled flowers in my hand.
But all of this was forgotten the moment the door opened, and Cora greeted me.
“Jesus,” I cursed, giving her a once-over before she even had the chance to say hi. “You look insane.”
“Insane is good?” she asked, pink staining her cheeks.
I’d never seen her in anything beyond scrubs and shorts. Granted, this woman could wear a paper bag and be the hottest woman in the room. Tonight though, she’d dressed up, wearing a short, strappy number with tiny pink flowers dotting the fabric.
“Insane is really good,” I clarified.
5 ++ STARS
Because, after all, there is no greater love story than the one we make ourselves.
Let me begin by saying The Scars I Bare was a book I was really looking forward to after reading The Choice I’ve Made. I knew it was going to be raw, but I wasn’t prepared for the emotional journey J.L. Berg was going to take me on. AHHH…I just loved it!!!!
Readers were introduced to Dean in The Choices I Made. We got some of his backstory. Dean had quite a story to share with us. Dean had everything going for him, a job he lived for and a place to live that he loved. One of his greatest loves was the sea until one night the very thing he loved took it all away. Now, he isn’t quite sure where he fits in. He has scars both visible to the outside and scars on the inside no one really understands. His one bright spot in his recovery was his beautiful nurse, Cora. But, Cora’s life wasn’t on Ocracoke Island, so he came home after his hospitalization. Yet, he never forgot her. Several years have passed and imagine his surprise when Cora and her precocious daughter, Lizzie, arrive, making the island their new home.
Dean has been drifting until Cora and Lizzie arrive. There was always an attraction between them, but neither is really in a place for more than friendship. Both of them are in similar places in their lives but for different reasons. Dean is trying to find his place after the accident, and Cora is trying to find her place after her divorce. A theme throughout this book was the power love has to heal even the most broken parts of a person. Both have trust issues, but most of the issues are within themselves. Cora helps Dean with his fear of water. The sea was a part of who Dean was as a person. He loved it, but in his mind, it betrayed him in the worst possible way. With Cora’s help, he learns to trust himself again and to take steps to overcome his fear of the water. Dean shows her what real love is. As she helped him, he helps her find the trust in herself that was taken from her.
Even though this was Dean and Cora’s road to love, the one person who brought them together was her daughter, Lizzie. I adored this sweet, perceptive, intelligent, and funny child. She was the bright spot when things got tough. Once you meet her yourself, you will know exactly what I’m talking about.
J.L. Berg is a master at tugging at your emotions. Her weapon in this book was Dean’s journal and Cora’s blog. Each character had their own voice in the book, but the journal and blog really told me the depth of pain and scars each of them carried. My heart hurt for both of them. The title of the book is a perfect choice because each bore scars that life had given them.
This book had everything I love in a book…emotion, romance, and the perfect amount of steam. As in the first book, Berg’s writing transported me to that tiny, close-knit island that I have come to love. Can I just say, the epilogue was probably one of my favorites EVER? I can’t wait to return with Book 3!!!!
Meet J. L. Berg:
I’m a California native, who lives in the South – Virginia to be exact. I still prefer sushi to fried chicken, avocados to okra, and I absolutely loathe humidity. I do love watching the seasons change though. My husband and I have been here for over a decade, and I still get giddy like a school girl every time it snows. It’s magical!
I’m married to my high school sweetheart, and we’ve been blessed with two beautiful daughters and two rescue pups I like to call my “coworkers”. I’m obsessed with chocolate, minions, anything Harry Potter and I love to watch re-runs of Friends and Gilmore Girls!
