Don’t get caught in the surge.

Through a bullet hole in a wall, I watch a man bleed to death.

Those responsible think their crime died with the victim, until I identify them.

What’s a girl to do when she’s being hunted by murderers

witness protection can’t even stop?

My only refuge is a place I vowed to never go again.

When it’s do or die, an eight-year-old heartache suddenly seems trivial.

Besides, he won’t be there anyway.

But he is.

Turns out my old pain feels brand new the second his eyes meet mine.

I can’t leave. I can’t stay.

This snowy town that’s supposed to be my shelter

suddenly exposes me more than before.

With no one else to lean on, Liam becomes my lifeline.

Now we’re both running for our lives,

trying not to get swept away.

Goodreads / Amazon

Breathing was something my body forgot how to do. An automatic action that suddenly became something so very complicated.

Liam,” I said, the word low and strained. It used up the very last bit of my oxygen.

His hands flexed again, still holding on to my arms.

That was the problem. The reason my lungs were burning and my sight was blurred. He was touching me.

I wrenched away, nearly tripping. He reached to steady me again, but I made a strangled sound, and he stopped.

The second there was some precious space between us, I sucked in a ragged breath. Then another.

“You’re here,” he rasped.

“You weren’t supposed to be.”

He smiled. Oh, why did he have to do that? The dimple in his chin appeared, and my knees started to shake.

Eight years. Even after eight years, he still reduced me to putty.

“Thought about me, did you?”

Every. Single. Day.

“Of course not.” I drew myself up, wrapping my arms around my body. Oh God, I looked a mess. I was dressed like a homeless person…

Oh God, I was a homeless person.

And I’d come here.

This was a very, very bad choice.

He stepped forward, and I took a step back. Liam frowned, and my eyes raked over his face, taking in his features, noting the way he’d changed over the years.

He was bigger now. So much bigger. His hair wasn’t as long as it used to be. Eight years ago, it was so long he could pull it into a short ponytail at the base of his neck. He said he liked it that way because it drove his father crazy. Now it was shorter on the sides but still long enough to run your fingers through.

His jaw was more chiseled. Light-colored hair filled it out, defined it even more. And his eyes.

Oh, his eyes.

Still the same stormy gray, the same depths I could get lost in for hours. They were wiser now. Almost more hawk-like, as if he could penetrate even my deepest of secrets with that stare.

The trembling in my knees moved to my hands. I stood there staring at him, unable to speak, looking like a homeless woman and trembling like a mouse caught out in the cold.

“Is your father with you?” he asked.

The words were like a knife right to my chest. I actually winced when he said them.

After my throat worked, I managed to reply. “Um, no. I’m alone.”

He frowned. He was starting to see something wasn’t right. He would know if I stood in front of him any longer.

There was something about Liam Mattison that managed to strip me bare.

I thought it had been because I was sixteen. But here I was at the age of twenty-four, and I knew it hadn’t been my age.

It was him.

“Ms. Lane,” the concierge spoke from somewhere behind. “I spoke to the manager, and I’m sorry, but there isn’t anything we can—”

I spun. “It’s okay!” I cut him off instantly, wishing I could have done it sooner.

“Manager?” Liam wondered from behind.

Of course he’d heard.

The man glanced behind me, his eyes widening a fraction.

“What’s this about a manager, Kenny?”

His eyes flickered to me, and I shook my head, begging him to shut up.

“Who runs this place?” Liam snapped.

I gasped. “You run BearPaw now?”

“Yes,” Liam replied with all the confidence in the world.

“What about your father?” Kenny wondered behind us.

“Why did you need a manager?” Liam asked, ignoring what he said.

“I… ah…” I began, then went for my bag I’d dropped on the floor. “I should be going.”

“Like hell,” Liam growled, grabbing my arm again. His hold was firm, but it didn’t hurt.

And damn if I stopped breathing again.

“Please don’t touch me.” I gasped.

Liam frowned but let go. “Stay,” he ordered.

5+++++ STARS

Fighting Weight has taken the top slot for my favorite books of 2018 as well as being an all-time favorite read for me. How could it not? This book is written with so much emotion, and it is an issue that affects so many women and men, and Gillian Jones handled it with so much sensitivity and love. I knew that the first moment I read her note to readers and her dedication.

Alina was just a child when her world was turned upside down. Her mother, who had once been so loving turned to alcohol, and that loving mother became a monster. This poor child had to endure such emotional abuse at the hands of the person who was supposed to love her no matter what. Her bright spot was her brother, Lucky, who would take her outside and teach her about the stars and constellations in the sky so they wouldn’t have to hear the abuse that was also heaped on their father. When he made an attempt to leave and protect his children, her mother committed the ultimate betrayal. So, she and Lucky were sent to live with their aunt and uncle. What should have been a respite from all the hurt became even worse than living with her mother. The insults about who she was as a person…worthless and her weight, she was always accused of being fat and ugly even though others thought she was beautiful. Alina tried so hard to please her aunt, but nothing was ever good enough. Then, she gave in and believed her. Therefore, she turned on herself. Now, her bully wasn’t just her aunt but herself. To finally have some control, she became bulimic, and she would struggle and fight so hard to bring herself back up from that depth of darkness.

Alina has to be one of the strongest heroines I’ve met in my many years of reading books. Her strength is inspiring to me. As a child, she never should have endured what she had to. It was just as damaging to her as having bruises if she had been physically abused. The bruises she sustained were inside, and thus harder for others to see her pain. Thankfully, she had an amazing group of friends, a loving brother, and a loving boyfriend, Slater. With their support, she was able to do amazing things.

Slater gives new meaning to the words “unconditional love.” He has seen her at her lowest, and instead of running away, he ran toward her. He was the angel to the demon that was Alina’s own voice trying to drag her back down to the darkness she was trying to escape.

I know I haven’t given much of a synopsis of the book, but I felt it was more important to give my feelings after reading it. This was a review that was quite difficult for me to write. I think so many people struggle with eating disorders, and the origin comes from various sources….mean people, society, and even like Alina, from those who are supposed to love us. It can come from hurtful words and for myself, rejection and the need to be in control. As a child when the world you know is turned upside down, you have no control over it. Some of us grasp on to what little control we are able to have. For me, it was my intake of food. My issue was from the rejection and abandonment of the father I adored. I was his princess, and I didn’t understand that when he left my mother, he was essentially leaving me too. I tried very hard to be perfect thinking that would work, yet it never did. It is an ongoing struggle, especially when life throws curveballs. As with Alina, I am lucky to have a loving mother, stepdad, sister, two wonderful sons, and the man who for the past 27 years has showed me I am worthy. Yes, I have my very own Slater.  Thank you, Gillian Jones, for writing this heartbreaking yet beautiful book. You have given us so much hope and proved there are good people out there who care!

The Consequences of Rejection by Rachel Van Dyken Release Blitz

The Consequence of Rejection by Rachel Van Dyken
Publication Date: March 26th, 2018
Genre: Contemporary Romance

You know the universe is trying to tell you something when you get struck by lightning, but only after getting hit on by the elderly, almost getting run over by a semi, and running into the one who got away.
Why do they say it like that anyway?
Like I accidentally lost her when she was the one that got in the car with my best friend and left me.
The day after I proposed.
We were eighteen.
I wanted forever.
She didn’t.
It’s been ten years.
I tried to move on, tried to get married, had that same wedding crashed by my now best friend who says the only way for me to stop pissing off the universe, is to gain closure with the one woman I can’t forget.
So I do it.
I embark on a journey down memory lane that not only lands me in prison but on the receiving end of a fist fight in front of the entire town, this naturally happens after drunken pool sex, climbing the same girl’s window, and getting threatened at gunpoint by her father.
To say the universe is trying to tell me something anything, is a giant understatement.
I just hope I survive the message.
And then, I hope I survive her—again.

WOW!!! This book completely blew my mind! I still don’t know what to think about it and it’s been several days since I finished. All I can say is Epoch – the second part – can’t come soon enough!!!!
This is a complex story of sorts. I would say it’s a romance but it is so much more than that. I could describe what’s going on and who’s who but I honestly believe that less is more when it comes to reviewing this book. I wouldn’t want to spoil a minute of it for someone else.
I am a die hard Jewel E. Ann fan and went into this book totally blind. I know she had released segments in her newsletter but I didn’t read it because I didn’t want to have to wait between chapters but I never looked at the blurb or joined any discussion. This book is unlike any other book I have ever read but I can say it is true to Jewel E. Ann’s works in that it involves the heart and I am feeling mine is about to be ripped apart with the second part. Maybe I’m a glutton for punishment with feeling that way and being eager for it, but I’m beyond ready for Epoch!! I highly recommend this book to everyone!!

Marriage of Inconvenience (Knitting in the City) by Penny Reid Blog Tour with Excerpt, 5-Star Review & Giveaway!!!

Marriage of Inconvenience, an all new romantic comedy standalone in the USA Today bestselling, Knitting in the City Series by Penny Reid, is available NOW!

MOI copy

There are three things you need to know about Kat Tanner (aka Kathleen Tyson. . . and yes, she is *that* Kathleen Tyson): 1) She’s determined to make good decisions, 2) She must get married ASAP, and 3) She knows how to knit.

Being a billionaire heiress isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In fact, it sucks. Determined to live a quiet life, Kat Tanner changed her identity years ago and eschewed her family’s legacy. But now, Kat’s silver spoon past has finally caught up with her, and so have her youthful mistakes. To avoid imminent disaster, she must marry immediately; it is essential that the person she chooses have no romantic feelings for her whatsoever and be completely trustworthy.

Fortunately, she knows exactly who to ask. Dan O’Malley checks all the boxes: single, romantically indifferent to her, completely trustworthy. Sure, she might have a wee little crush on Dan the Security Man, but with clear rules, expectations, and a legally binding contract, Kat is certain she can make it through this debacle with her sanity—and heart—all in one piece.

Except, what happens when Dan O’Malley isn’t as indifferent—or as trustworthy—as she thought?

Staring at his chin, because I couldn’t quite lift my eyes any higher, I cleared my throat. “Should we get ready for bed?”

“Sure,” he said, his voice a rumble. Dan’s eyes were on me, I felt the weight of them.

My hands came to the hem of my skirt and I hesitated, feeling winded for some reason. Sneaking a glance at him, I immediately wished I hadn’t. His gaze was watchful, but it was also unmistakably hot in a way that seemed at once both avaricious and accusatory. The vice tightened around my lungs.

Kiss him! Just freaking kiss him! You want numbered steps? Fine. You kiss him- check. He kisses you back- check. Then you make out- check. Check the boxes.

I licked my lips, balling my hands into fists at my sides again, preparing to follow my hasty list.

But then he said, “Undress me.”

My breath caught. On instinct, my eyes lifted and collided with his in much the same way our bodies had collided at the top of the stairs just moments ago. Jarring. Startling. Thrilling. This time I couldn’t look away because this time I was falling. He made no move to catch me.

“What? What did you say?”

His eyes narrowed, which served only to increase the intensity of his gaze from smolder to inferno. “Take my clothes off.”

I stared at him, licking my lips again, and shaking my head. That wasn’t one of my steps.

Lifting my chin, I moved to kiss him. He leaned to the side, evading me even as his eyes dropped to my mouth.

“Take off my shirt and I’ll give you a kiss.” He’d used his naughty-secret voice.

An explosion of heat erupted in my belly, and now I was hot all over. I couldn’t figure out if the heat was embarrassment or arousal or both.

He didn’t give me a chance to figure it out. His hands lifted and he undid his cuffs; then they moved to the top button of his shirt.

“You better take over,” he said darkly, “or else you’re not getting that kiss.”

What I love about Penny Reid is I never know what I’m going to get but I DO KNOW it will be spectacular! Just like I expected, this one exceeded my expectations. It was full of everything that Penny Reid is…romance, sexiness, friendship, laughter, and quirky characters.

This book started out like gangbusters with a phone call. Kat has tried to make good decisions after spending her youth not making the best decisions. She is working full-time, going to college, and visiting her parents. When her Uncle Eugene calls her to tell her she is in danger, her life changes yet again. Now, she finds herself desperately seeking a husband, and she needs one NOW! She has two men in mind, and she decides to go with Dan O’Malley, the hottie in charge of security. She just hopes she can put aside her crush on him and the awkward night they shared in Vegas years ago.

Dan, like Kat, has worked hard to turn his life around after his mistakes as a youth as well. He has been quite successful at it. When Kat approaches him with her predicament, he doesn’t hesitate to help her. She is full of gratitude, and she thinks he is doing it purely for unselfish reasons. Too bad, he doesn’t want her gratitude, and he is definitely not doing it for unselfish reasons. You see…Dan has had feelings for Kat too. Yeah…things are about to get really complicated!

I just loved Kat. She was a character full of contradictions. At first, she appears to be shy and has only made the best decisions. No, that is not who she has always been. She has made many mistakes, but not because of being a rebellious youth. Her decisions came from fear and rejection. Many mistake her shyness for weakness, but they would be wrong. When she has to fight for her life and her family’s legacy, she is a forced to be reckoned with. With Dan and her friends by her side, she is unstoppable.

Even though Dan and Kat came from two very different worlds, they had a lot in common. Dan made some bad decisions too, and he has worked hard to make a better life for himself. He too has lived with rejection, but unlike Kat, he had a mother who was able to be a stabilizing force in his life. Speaking of mothers, I just loved Dan’s mother!!!!

The chemistry between Dan and Kat is sizzling, and Reid does an excellent job of teasing her readers, giving us butterflies. The romance, itself, was the perfect balance of sweet and sexy. At the core, it was a relationship built on trust, patience, friendship and love.

As always, in any book I have read by Reid, there is that close-knit group of friends who are more like family. Each character is there for each other, showing support and love.

Oh my gosh, Reid did a fantastic job of weaving other things into the story, like drug company ethics and mental illness. She did it flawlessly, bringing light to both things.

One of my favorite things was the theme of how we view others, whether it be mental illness or social status. For instance, she illustrated that we don’t know what it’s like for someone else until we walk in their shoes. Kat was extremely wealthy. Automatically, I would think that she would have little or no problems. Reid showed me in Kat’s case, that was far from the truth. Her wealth represented isolation, rejection, and guilt. Kat felt like she should feel gratitude for all she had, a home and money, even though her mother was mentally ill and her father ignored her. For her, wealth was a burden, but she did find a way to live with it and use it for good in the world.

The icing on the cake was of course the epilogue. It was different because it was many years later with all the gang’s children being older. There is a lot of potential for stories involving them. As always, I’m anticipating what Penny Reid writes next!
