Christie’s Review

5 STARS

Wow!!! What a read!!!! When I read the synopsis, I knew it was going to be a good read, but it far surpassed anything I was expecting.

Bell is a cocktail waitress working in a casino trying to forget the horrific event that happened during her childhood that changed her forever. She thinks she is doing pretty good. She has great friends and a great job. She controls her own emotions and relationships with men, never giving her heart to ANYONE! When she lays eyes on Dario Capece one night, everything changes!

Dario is rich, and he has worked hard to be the success he is. He has a wife, Gwen, but they have an arrangement. She sees who she wants and so does he, but it’s discreet. They always promised to never leave the other, but when he sees Bell, life for him is getting ready to become EXTREMELY COMPLICATED!

This is a book that kept my interest from the very beginning, not only the storyline but the characters as well. Both stand out in the book. It is told from several POVs which makes it even more interesting. I felt for all three main characters, Bell, Dario, and Gwen, Dario’s wife. All three have led really hard lives, and Gwen and Bell have suffered things no person should ever have to endure. Torre has given her readers three very complex and multi-layered characters.

This is not just a romance, but it full of betrayals, secrets, action, and an evil villian. Parts had me on the edge of my seat because I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. You will know what I mean the deeper you get into the book. It does end in one heck of a cliffhanger, but never fear, the sequel is releasing very soon. I’m a certainly looking forward to it.

Title: Save the Date
Author: Carrie Aarons
Genre: Romantic Comedy

Cover Design: Sarah Hansen, Okay Creations

Release Date: June 24, 2018
Blurb
You know that pact you make with your childhood best
friend of the opposite sex? The one where, if you’re both still single, lonely
and hopeless at thirty, you’ll marry each other?
This is the story about what happens when you hit the big three-oh and have to
make good on that pinky promise.

Personally, I think love, romance and all of that nonsense is a crock of, well,
you know. And Reese Collins, the boy who used to put worms in my hair at
backyard barbecues, knows that better than anyone.

But when he moves to the same city I’ve happily, and singly, inhabited for
years, memories of oaths past resurface. Reese is like a dog with a bone; a
really hot dog and that bone just happens to be me.

He won’t stop hounding me, and the crazy thing is, my frigid, traitorous heart
is starting to cave. For my best friend.

It seems so far off, when you’re a kid playing Monopoly in your treehouse. But
when that clock strikes midnight on your thirtieth birthday, and you’re
standing alone in front of a grocery store-bought cupcake, a childhood deal to
walk down the aisle doesn’t seem so silly anymore.

Emma and her best friend, Leslie, are desperate to solve this murder. But suspects abound. The perpetrator could be a teacher, an administrator, a member of Kisten’s zealous church community, or even another student.

Emma must juggle her teaching responsibilities, her new romance with handsome Hunter Wells, and interest from a hunky second suitor, all while searching for evidence to bring a killer to justice before someone else dies.

Christie’s Review

5 Stars

Poison by Punctuation by Kelley Kaye is a witty and often humorous cozy mystery with great characters!

Emma Lovett has had an eventful first year teaching in a new town. Just as things are settling down for her, complete with a new love interest, another murder occurs. This time it’s a student, so Emma is determined to find the killer to bring him or her to justice!

Kaye gives her readers lots of twists and turns to keep us guessing. The characters, even the secondary ones, are quirky and memorable. I loved that each chapter was a quote from Shakespeare and how it went along very well with each chapter. My favorite aspect about the book is that it was a mystery yet was quite funny which made the story even better. Within the pages of the book, Kaye touches on a bigger problem within our society, especially in schools….bullying. I absolutely love a book that not only entertains me yet takes on an issue and teaches me something new about it. Kaye did exactly this.

I’m really loving this series, and I’m looking forward to the next book!!!

Character Interview with Emma

Emma speaks

What do you like best about your move to Colorado?

Originally, I just wanted to get as far away from Holly Hill and my philandering Ex husband as possible. So I meandered west on the map, until I came to this little town called Pinewood. When I researched it, it seemed like a fantastic combination of lakes and mountains and trees and all four seasons, and everything I was looking for. I love it—it’s a great town, in every single way exceptin’ mosquitoesand of course those fling-flangin’ murders!

What do you like best about being a high school teacher?

First, I’ve always loved books. My daddy owned a little book store in Holly Hill he called ‘Buy the Book’—get it? He never did things ‘by the book’ himself, but he loved puns and wordplay, so… Anyway, there’s that, and then I had an English teacher named Mr. Kinney. I always did well in school, y’know, but I felt lost when they started talking symbolism and theme and those big, important ideas about books. So Mr. Kinney started out explaining some of those big ideas for different poems or stories—and I’d get it by the time he was finished! Eventually I started being able to figure things out without Mr. Kinney, but I knew it was his patience that got me there. I wanted to be able to help other people get there too, y’know? And with Books and Love of Language as favorite things, because I got that from Daddy, English teacher seemed like the best fit. Now that I’m finished with my second year of teaching, I love the students best, and trying to help them get to the point where they can recognize and analyze those “big, important ideas” for themselves. It’s intoxicating to see them experience that ‘lightbulb moment!!

What do you like least about being a high school teacher?

Well. If I say “those two big P’s—Parents and Politics” are my least favorite things, know that I’m not talking about all parents—just a very few, the ones my friend Leslie calls the “My Parents Can Do No Wrong” corps. Those few make it difficult to teach an adolescent to learn from her/his mistakes—because adolescents—just like all people—make mistakes, right? and those few parents (just a few, mind you!) don’t recognize that fact about their teenagers. The frustration makes me feel helpless, like a moth in a mitten! And as far as politics—I guess that happens in every job, right!? But I don’t like it. Not in the least. I just want to spend my time teaching my kids.

Is it hard to trust your new love interest after what happened with you ex?

I think it’s so, so interesting, but it’s not! Even after we suspected him of MELVIN’S murder for a while, once I really got to know Hunter, I knew he was exactly what he says he is. What you see is what you get

with that man, and that’s exactly what I needed to find after Ronald shattered my young heart. I have to give some credit to my poor deceased daddy on this front, too. He might’ve had a vision whose britches were too big for his ambitions, but he was always, always trustworthy and straightforward, so I knew there were guys like that out there!

Do you ever get scared since a staff member was murdered and now a student was murdered?

I absolutely do. After I almost got killed when I was investigatin’ Melvin’s murder, Hunter got me this pink stun gun I’m supposed to have with me all the time. But sometimes my curiosity’s britches get too big for my common sense, and that’s when I get myself into trouble! If anyone out there has an idea to help me control this impulsivity issue I’ve fallen prey to, please let me know before I REALLY get myself into a pickle

The Fragile Ordinary by Samantha Young Excerpt Reveal

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Impossible Vastness of Us and the On Dublin Street series comes a heartfelt and beautiful new young adult novel, set in Scotland, about daring to dream and embracing who you are. Don’t miss THE FRAGILE ORDINARY releasing on June 26, 2018, and get a sneak peek of the book below!

About THE FRAGILE ORDINARY:

I am Comet Caldwell.

And I sort of, kind of, absolutely hate my name.

People expect extraordinary things from a girl named Comet. That she’ll be effortlessly cool and light up a room the way a comet blazes across the sky.

But from the shyness that makes her book-character friends more appealing than real people to the parents whose indifference hurts more than an open wound, Comet has never wanted to be the center of attention. She can’t wait to graduate from her high school in Edinburgh, Scotland, where the only place she ever feels truly herself is on her anonymous poetry blog. But surely that will change once she leaves to attend university somewhere far, far away.

When new student Tobias King blazes in from America and shakes up the school, Comet thinks she’s got the bad boy figured out. Until they’re thrown together for a class assignment and begin to form an unlikely connection. Everything shifts in Comet’s ordinary world. Tobias has a dark past and runs with a tough crowd—and none of them are happy about his interest in Comet. Targeted by bullies and thrown into the spotlight, Comet and Tobias can go their separate ways…or take a risk on something extraordinary.

“Endearing and relatable, Comet-the girl who is searching for her place in this world-will shoot through the sky and into your heart.”

— #1 New York Times bestselling author Erin Watt

EXCERPT:

Hearing and feeling Tobias’s heart beat beneath my cheek was the most wonderful feeling in the world. Despite my worry for him and for Stevie, I couldn’t help but feel happy as the boy I loved slept in my bed with his arm around me.

The morning sun woke him around nine in the morning. He groaned and then grew still, maybe realizing I was curled up against him. For a moment I tensed, fearing he was going to regret everything he’d said last night.

Instead he trailed his fingers down my arm. “You awake?” his voice rumbled above me.

I smiled, liking the tingles that bubbled and fizzed in certain parts of my body at the mere sound of his voice. “Yeah.”

“What time is it?”

I told him.

“Crap.”

“What?” I asked, sitting up as he reached across the bed to where his phone lay on the bedside table.

“Stevie and my mom.” He cursed again as he flicked the screen. “They’ve texted and called a bunch of times. I better call my mom back first before she calls the police or something.” He pressed the screen and held the phone to his ear. “Mom,” he said almost immediately. “I’m fine.” Tobias scowled. “I’m a big boy…no…no, I didn’t…I’m with Comet…” Streaks of color appeared high on his cheeks, surprising me. Tobias rarely got embarrassed. “No, we just fell asleep…yeah…I’m on my way.” He hung up and gave me an apologetic look. “I have to go.”

At his beleaguered tone, I placed a reassuring hand on his arm. “She’s your mum. It would be weird if she wasn’t worried you didn’t come home.”

“Yeah, whatever.” He shook his head and got off the bed, leaving me to frown at him.

Tobias seemed to be in a continually bad mood with his mother. I wish I had the guts to tell him to talk to her about why he was so mad, but I didn’t want to push too hard too soon on such a delicate subject.

“I’ll go appease her,” he said, slipping his trainers on. “Then come back?”

I opened my mouth to agree and then remembered my promise from the night before. “I’m going over to Vicki’s this morning.”

“Right. How about I meet you outside the Espy around three o’ clock?”

Relieved and delighted that he not only didn’t regret saying what he had last night but that he wanted to see me again so soon, I grinned and got off the bed. Tobias gave me that boyish smile of his and I reached for his hand, needing to touch him.

He squeezed mine, a solemnity entering his gaze. “I want to invite Stevie to meet us. I’m hoping that together we can talk him out of this bullshit. When it was just me I wasn’t getting anywhere, but he cares about you. Maybe he’ll listen.”

I nodded, loving him even more for wanting to help his cousin. “Definitely. If we let him know we’re here to help him through everything with his mum but that we can only do that if he walks away from Dean and the drugs…maybe he’ll see sense.”

I hoped.

Tobias hoped, too. I could see the turmoil in his eyes and I wanted desperately to be able to take it away.

It was as I was leading him from my bedroom to the front door that I heard the hallway floor creak behind us. I turned ever so slightly, catching sight of my dad in my peripheral. Ignoring him I hugged Tobias goodbye and waved him off down the garden path. I closed the door and turned to face my father. He stood frowning at me in his pajamas, a cup of coffee in one hand, a piece of toast in the other.

“Did that boy stay over?” he asked, sounding incredulous.

His tone suggested I’d done something wrong. I stiffened. “Yes.”

Dad took a step toward me, glowering now. “Don’t you think that’s something you should run past us first? You’re only sixteen, Comet.”

“Almost seventeen.” I bristled. How dare he suddenly play the parental card! Just when I was happy and didn’t need him, he wanted to stick his nose in where it was not wanted! A fire lit inside me and swept out of me before I could control it. “And let’s not play the concerned parent act, Kyle.” I strode toward my bedroom and shoved open the door. “You don’t get to decide which parts of my life you want to take an interest in. Having a kid? Kind of an all-or-nothing deal.” I stepped inside, gripping the door in my hand as I sneered at him. “You decided long ago it was nothing for you. No changing your mind now.” And with that I slammed the door in his shocked face.
