20 Jul

Cassiopeia Vitt takes center stage in this exciting novella from New York Times bestsellers M.J. Rose and Steve Berry. THE MUSEUM OF MYSTERIES is now available! Check out the tour below, and pick up your copy of THE MUSEUM OF MYSTERIES today!

THE MUSEUM OF MYSTERIES Synopsis:

In the French mountain village of Eze, Cassiopeia visits an old friend who owns and operates the fabled Museum of Mysteries, a secretive place of the odd and arcane. When a robbery occurs at the museum, Cassiopeia gives chase to the thief and is plunged into a firestorm.

Through a mix of modern day intrigue and ancient alchemy, Cassiopeia is propelled back and forth through time, the inexplicable journeys leading her into a hotly contested French presidential election. Both candidates harbor secrets they would prefer to keep quiet, but an ancient potion could make that impossible. With intrigue that begins in southern France and ends in a chase across the streets of Paris, this magical, fast-paced, hold-your-breath thriller is all you’ve come to expect from M.J. Rose and Steve Berry.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT

I closed the drawer. “This is extraordinary.”

“It is. But don’t uncork any of the bottles. Oddly, the scents are still potent. Five years ago we were doing research on them when the box disappeared. Then, as we now know, it found its way into the auction.” He pointed to one. “I can attest to the fact that this bottle contains fumes with some kind of hallucinogenic properties. I experienced a wild vision when I made the mistake of taking a sniff.”

Something about the box, the stones on top, the thick glass bottles, the iron corners, even the drawer, gave me pause. As if it were familiar, yet not. The feeling had started back in the shop, before the theft, while it had sat on the counter. There’d been no time to explore those feelings before all the excitement intervened.

But now—

A thought raced through my brain.

Somehow I knew that there should be vellum labels affixed to the bottom of each bottle. How? Why? I had no idea. Only that it was true. I gently touched one of them, then stopped and looked at Antoine. “May I take it out, if I don’t open it?”

He nodded.

I had to see if I was right.

I lifted out the bottle. Underneath was a label. Discolored and deteriorated with age. A word, written in a sepia script, had faded but could still be read.

Belladonna.

I replaced the bottle and reached for another.

Even before I lifted it out I knew that under it would be Diospyros.

And I was right.

I removed a third, but before I could peek beneath it I heard the grating sound of stones being ground beneath the soles of shoes and turned to see a man leaping toward me. Antoine shoved the newcomer away, then shouted for me to grab the box and run. Before I could move, a booted foot made contact with my arm. Somehow, I kept hold of the bottle in my grasp, but I was driven down to the wet ground. I tried to recoil and go on the offensive but another blow found my brow.

Red hot pain exploded across my skull.

Then, nothing.

Christie’s Review

4.5 STARS

What an absolutely fascinating novella M.J. Rose and Steve Berry have created!

Cassiopeia has traveled to the village of Eze to visit her dear family friend, Nicodeme, as she usually does when she isn’t traveling. She wasn’t expecting someone coming in and stealing an ancient artifact, giving chase, and then being pulled into an entirely different time period.

It’s amazing how the writers combine magic, legend, lore, time travel, and a modern day contested French presidential election. You might think all this would be just too much in a book, especially a novella, but not in these two talented writers’ hands. They had me hooked from the very first pages. I was completely intrigued by the references to Morgan Le Fay and Authurian legend.

My favorite part of the book actually was the writer’s note. It gave a background of so many elements of the book and tied the story together quite nicely. It also made me add the French village of Eze to my bucket list of places to travel!

Danielle’s Review
4 STARS
Emma Hartley has endured a life of hell thanks to her conniving mother. Even now that she is an adult, she cannot escape her due to her manipulations and extorting her. Emma is hopeful that she will soon be free of her mom but suddenly there is light in her world through her new stepbrother, Church.

Maybe this whole time, I should’ve been looking for someone as fucked up as me. Maybe two broken pieces can be glued together to make a whole.

Church Logan is a mysterious loner that seems to be mute. Emma is able to connect with him and “hear” him talk to her and then one day, he finally speaks to her out loud and she feels a special connection to him.

You don’t scare me. I see you, Church Logan,” she whispered. His eyes fell shut, then his head fell forward until their foreheads were touching. “You’re going to break me,” he whispered back.

Have these two found their solace from the demons of their past?

This is a very unique story and I really enjoyed it. This is more than a dark read, it’s a psychological thriller full of twists and turns. Church is book 1 of this duet and I am anxious to see how this story ends. This book is told in dual POV which is my favorite to read. This is my first book by this author but won’t be my last.

Author Bio
Crazy woman from a remote location in Alaska (where the need for a creative mind is a necessity!), I have been writing since … forever? Yeah, that sounds about right. I have been told that I remind people of Lucille Ball – I also see shades of Jennifer Saunders, and Denis Leary. So basically, I laugh a lot, I’m clumsy a lot, and I say the F-word A LOT.

I like dogs more than I like most people, and I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t drink. No, I do not live in an igloo, and no, the sun does not set for six months out of the year, there’s your Alaska lesson for the day. I have mermaid hair – both a curse and a blessing – and most of the time I talk so fast, even I can’t understand me.

Yeah. I think that about sums me up.

About QUIT YOUR PITCHIN’

What’s wrong with my butt?
She means those words to be directed toward the woman beside her, not him. But he can’t stop himself from answering. Not when her ass is the most magnificent thing he’s seen in his life.
Apparently, answering her with ‘not a damn thing’ wasn’t what she was expecting.
She likely wasn’t expecting the baseball she took to the face at his next at bat, either.
All it takes is one ill-fated foul ball, and George Hoffman, Lumberjacks center fielder, falls head over heels in love with Wrigley Field—and yes, that is her real name.
From that point forward, George and Wrigley fall into a fast whirlwind love that ends with them eloping to Vegas. And he has his potty mouth, titty bar owning, pain in the ass grandmother to thank for it.
Not that he’s complaining or anything.
Who wouldn’t want to be married to a woman that made his heart race like he was in the final game of the World Series?
The only problem is trying to convince her of that.

Christie’s Review of Books 1 & 2:

4. 5 Stars

Very well-written and finely crafted mystery series!!!

The series center around main character, single mother, Beth, her son Ben, and her charming cat, Magpie.  As the series opens, she has just landed a great job as an assistant archivist at Wyatt’s, the boys’ Endowment school in Dulwich. She is really excited and hoping when the time comes, her son Ben, will be able to get in. It will also help her financially, adding to what she makes in doing odd jobs, such as editing a website or selling features to a newspaper. Imagine her surprise when she finds the body of her new boss on her very first day.  She becomes a possible suspect, so she finds herself trying to solve the mystery to clear her name and finds herself dealing with Inspector York who infuriates her. It’s a mystery at its finest! While investigating on her own, she discovers dark secrets looming just below the surface of the beautiful, affluent village of Dulwich.

In the second book, Girl in the Gallery, Beth once again finds herself at the center of a new mystery. Again, she finds herself at odds at times with Inspector York. However, they do make a great team, and they do work well together most of the time. Castle does a great job of continuing to build not only the main characters but the secondary characters as well.  Not only is this a great mystery, Castle also touches on some really important social issues. I love the setting, and as with the first book, I’m anticipating the next book in the series. As she asks, her friend, “And anyway, seriously, what else could possibly happen in Dulwich,” we all know Beth will be back. She has a knack for murder mysteries, and I for one can’t wait until she’s back.
