Excerpt:

A cloud of smoke followed the silver-haired woman out the door of the main building onto the covered porch outside, and she shot the butt of her cigarette into the dirt in front of the semi.

“Your mother’s been trying to reach you.”

My phone had died two days earlier, and I’d forgotten to bring a charger. Mom was the only person I still spoke with from Lancaster, but it was rare for her to call me, and I only reached out a few times a year.

“Say what she wanted?” I asked and slid my hands into worn leather gloves.

“Honey, I hate to be the one to tell you this, but your brother passed away last night.”

Ted Grier hung back in the doorway, watching. Both of their faces wore sympathy.

“Pardon?”

“Your brother passed, Abe. You should call her back. Come on in and use the phone.”

I hadn’t spoken to my brother in years, but when I left home with no plans to return, I just assumed things would stay how I left them. They’d cling to their Bibles and bands and keep living in their own warped version of reality. They’d stay tucked under the strict thumb of the Legacies and God, or at least the way they interpreted him, and I’d live my life in the woods, free of their judgment and rules.

Alone and how I liked it.

They lived how they wanted, and I did the same.

I squinted in the mid-day sun, and the tension in my neck pinched even tighter.

“Jacob died?”

Ted limped to the stoop, tapped a Camel from his pack and lit it. “Son, you wanna come inside for a minute? Call your family?”

I did not. Calling them was the last thing I wanted.

It was almost noon, and I still had more than half day’s work to finish. The tobacco in the air was thick as I pulled it into my chest. “I’ll call when I get home.”

It was supposed to rain for the next four days in the hills, and there was work that needed to be done. Calling in the middle of the day wasn’t going to do anything but put me behind, and my brother would still be dead that evening.

Christie’s Review

Break My Fall is a riveting book with quite an original concept. Abe left his family years ago because of their distorted views on religion. He never intended to return, but the death of his younger brother changes that. He hates going back, but he knows he only has a limited time there. When he lays eyes on his brother’s widow, Myra, all that changes, and he is determined to save her, no matter what it takes.

Since this is a trilogy, Mabie took her time developing both the storyline and the characters, and not just the primary characters. There are secondary characters that drive the plot, such as Abe’s father.

I’ve never really read much fiction about cults, but I found this fascinating. I knew this was a romance, so I knew before reading Abe and Myra would be in a relationship. Like the rest of the book, Mabie has taken her time with this. She made it very realistic. Myra is very naive and innocent. She hasn’t been exposed to things outside of her town, and she certainly has no idea what it means to be in a normal relationship with a man. Mabie captures her innocence perfectly. Abe is so very sweet, patient, and kind with her. I can see their relationship developing into something that will last forever.

A great deal of the book deals with learning to live outside of the cult and Abe’s journey. Now, he is helping Myra travel the same path. I’m not an expert on cults, but I have seen documentaries. From what I have seen, Mabie has done her research and given her readers an authentic, truthful story.

I love a good book, but I love a good story even better. She has given us quite a story. I loved the imagery she used. For instance, everything is “clean, neat, and tidy” in Lancaster. Men are well-groomed and nicely dressed. Yet, when you look underneath, you will see the ugliness and evil that walks those streets. Whereas Abe is described as not big on fashion, and he has long hair and a beard….those things aren’t accepted in Lancaster. Abe represents everything good and right. Mabie also doesn’t bash God, she very clearly shows how some people distort Him and the Bible, using it for their own selfish and evil purposes!

This is quite an emotional read with a bit of suspense thrown in, especially concerning Abe’s brother. I have a feeling there is something more there….The ending….WOW!!!! I can’t wait to see where Mabie is going to take us in the next book!!!!

EXCERPT

Tamara stepped out of her rental car and breathed in the Maine air, cooler, fresher here by the sea. It was hot here, too, though. She nearly froze on the drive up from Boston when she’d turned on the air-conditioning and it cooled her sweat. Dumb to have walked up and down the Boston waterfront. She liked to walk and she had a lot on her mind, but she knew better. Boston could get just as hot and humid in August as Washington did.

She hadn’t thought this little adventure through. It wasn’t like her, but [her daughter] Adalyn…

What had she got herself into?

“Maybe nothing,” Tamara said aloud as she looked out at the sea, waves washing over sand and rocks. A good place to kayak, Graham Blackwood had told her. Then he’d promptly admitted he didn’t know anything about kayaking. He wanted to try while he was in Maine.

Kayak, get past a friend’s murder. Why the hell not?

Tamara spotted a seagull that on another day, under different circumstances, would have enthralled or at least amused her. Patrick, her ex-husband, considered them rats with wings. Killjoy. Good riddance to him.

She’d pulled into a turnaround on a narrow road in front of his rental house—assuming she hadn’t made a wrong turn. It was on an isolated section of the coast near the Sisters of the Joyful Heart convent. Graham’s choice. He’d given her directions and asked her to keep their meeting private. Verity wanted to talk to you before her flight, but she’s already cutting it close. I’m staying in Maine for a few days. I’ll explain everything tomorrow. It concerns Adalyn. Verity and I are both fond of her.

Tamara didn’t see another soul, hear any cars—just the breeze and the wash of the sea. That’s what she wanted on her vacation. She’d return to Boston for dinner and be on her way for three weeks of bliss as soon as possible. She might even get a head start and leave tonight. A Top 10 Read of 2018

An All-Time Favorite Series

The Perfect Duet by Meghan Quinn is an emotionally stunning and brilliant read!!! It is easily a top 10 read of 2018 and an all-time favorite series!

I really hesitate to tell others too much about the plot or the characters because, I, myself, don’t like spoilers. I met these two characters in The Blue Line Duet. While you don’t have to read that duet, I really highly recommend it because it gives you a background into each character. It’s quite a journey these two will take before they can find their own HEA…Quinn has lots of twists in store. Each one of those twists will make sense as these two have some issues they have to overcome on their own before becoming a couple.

I know I’m being vague, but honestly, going into the duet blind really is the best way to go. Just trust Meghan Quinn…she will have you tied up in knots, but I promise it’s a VERY SATISFYING ENDING!!!

I have to say Amity Cross had me hook, line, and sinker in the beginning pages of this book. She has a way of writing a setting that puts you right there, and I felt like I was someone on that lonely beach watching the first meeting between Sebastian and Juniper!
Juniper has lived her entire life in her small town. She is stuck. She is trying to save her struggling book store. It is one of the last things she has of her mother’s. She is determined to make it work. She never really thought about leaving until Sebastian.
Sebastian is running from the life he has as a rock star. As he says, “Rock ‘n’ roll will save your life….but fame will kill you.” He has had just about as much as he can handle of the fame. He doesn’t know who to trust anymore, and he needed a safe place to regroup and consider what his future is.
I liked Juniper’s character. Yeah, she could be cynical at times, but she was also very down to earth. She didn’t even know who Sebastian was until her best friend told her. That doesn’t really change anything. She just sees him as an interesting, sexy guy. She knows their relationship probably will end when he leaves, because everybody leaves. See….her cynicism!
Sebastian is a bit cynical as well but that is because of his fame and all it brought with it…some good and some really bad. Juniper is a breath of fresh air for him. She doesn’t care about the fame. In fact, it’s his fame that may very well derail their relationship before it gets off the ground.
I love a good rock star romance, and this was a good one. The characters were well fleshed out, and I’m still learning more about them. The writing itself was fantastic, and oh my I loved the setting. As I wrote earlier, Cross put me right there with the characters. I could vividly see the places in my mind. Thankfully, this is only the beginning for Sebastian and Juniper, so I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

What a clever and charming story! I loved the concept. Evie has had enough after being invited to the wedding of a crush she had in her teens. On top of that, she has broken up with an ex not too terribly long ago. She can’t understand what she keeps doing wrong, and why she can’t find lasting happiness. So, she decides to go to her little black book which is really a floral notebook that is filled with every crush and kiss she had since she was fifteen. Oh my, what a journey that was!!!

Her quest will lead her to find happiness in a place she was never expecting it. Who knew her little black book would lead her to Jake, who is a swoon worthy hero. He is loyal to those he loves. Evie is funny, intelligent, and caring. Readers will see how much she cares about each others as the book progresses.

I loved the romance and the characters. I loved the passages that she and Charmaine shared in from her book. They were quite funny! As much as I loved all these things, my favorite part was watching Evie discover who she really was! Great, heartwarming book!!!

Author Bio 

Hannah Pearl was born in East London. She is married with two children and now lives in Cambridge.

She has previously worked as a Criminology researcher at a university in Leicester, as a Development Worker with various charities and even pulled a few pints in her time.

In 2015 she was struck down by Labrynthitis, which left her feeling dizzy and virtually housebound. She has since been diagnosed with ME. Reading has allowed Hannah to escape from the reality of feeling ill. She read upwards of three hundred books during the first year of her illness. When her burgeoning ereader addiction grew to be too expensive, she decided to have a go at writing. In 2017 she won Simon and Schuster’s Books and the City #heatseeker short story competition, in partnership with Heat magazine, for her short story The Last Good Day.

Dating Down by Diane Louise is not only a great romantic comedy, but it is about second chances and finding happiness where you least expected it.

Alexis has found herself not only single but poor when her rich husband leaves her for a younger woman. She isn’t sure how she is supposed to start over after being the dutiful wife who rubbed elbows with the higher classes of society. I have to be honest and say I really was not a fan of her in the beginning. She came across as snobby, thinking she was better than others who had less money than she did. Apparently, she made her mind up when she was younger that she wasn’t going to live in poverty like her parents did. She has worked hard to keep that part of her life secret, but that gets harder when her younger, wilder sister, Candy, shows up drunk on her front porch, along with the taxi driver that wanted to make sure she was safe. From that moment on, her life changes drastically, and she will learn who really loves her. She will also learn a lesson in what really matters in life, and she will have to decide which is more important: the things you have or the way you choose to live your life.

Man, oh man, how I loved Bob, the sweet taxi driver who showed up on her doorstep with her sister. He is all that is good in the world, and I kept praying Alexis would realize it! He definitely has patience with her. He was a driving force in changing how I felt about Alexis. I saw a different side to her, and I liked the person she became by the end of the book.

I can’t leave this review without talking about Candy, Alexis’s sister. It is very rare that a secondary character is full of so much color! I just loved her!!! She owned every scene she was in, and I’m so glad she will be getting her own book.

This is the very first book I have read by Diane Louise, but it definitely won’t be my last!!!!

I look up at Cam and meet his eyes, brimming with secrets. I need answers, and I need them now.

“What’s going on?”

 

The man in my arms doesn’t answer with his words. Instead, he takes hold of the edge of my towel and pulls it from my body. I gasp at the sensation of our skin pressing intimately together. I brace myself against his chiseled arms, digging my fingers into his biceps for purchase.
