Sometimes life just takes the biscuit …
Abby Spencer knows she can come across as an airhead – she talks too much and is a bit of a klutz – but there’s more to her than that. Though she sacrificed her career to help raise her sisters, a job interview at biscuit company Crumbs could finally be her chance to shine. That’s until she hurries in late wearing a shirt covered in rusk crumbs, courtesy of her baby nephew, and trips over her handbag.
Managing director Douglas Faulkner isn’t sure what to make of Abby Spencer with her Bambi eyes, tousled hair and ability to say more in the half-hour interview than he manages in a day. All he knows is she’s a breath of fresh air and could bring a new lease of life to the stale corporate world of Crumbs. To his life too, if he’d let her.
But Doug’s harbouring a secret. He’s not the man she thinks he is.
I get so excited when I find a new writer I love, and I have found one in Kathryn Freeman. My heart and mind was hers from the very first pages of this book! I loved it!!!
Oh Crumbs is the love story of an unlikely couple, Abby and Doug. It wouldn’t seem as if this couple would have nothing in common. Abby comes from a big, loud, and loving family. They struggle financially, but they have stuck together and love one another. Doug is heir to a business empire, so he lacks for nothing, except love. His relationship with his father is fractured, and that is putting it mildly. Yet, from their first meeting, the spark is there. Abby completely turned Doug’s world upside down even if he doesn’t realize it at first.
One of my favorite aspects of the book was the way Freeman developed each character. For instance, Doug is a man who likes order. Once Abby literally trips her way into his world, he has invited chaos, but in a good way. He sees himself as cold and lacking emotion, and who wouldn’t with his family. But, Abby sees through that defense, and she somehow gets him to see himself differently. The compassionate side of Doug emerges to reveal a kind and generous man who happens to be a bit of fun as well!
Abby truly amazes me. She lost her mother when she was just a teenager. Instead of going off the rails, she postpones her dreams to help her father raise her sisters. Life is hard for Abby, but she always rises to the occasion and is there for her family. When Doug enters her life, it’s was nice to see her in a different light, a young woman falling in love and enjoying her life.
There are some bumps, including a secret, along the way for this couple, but it was so nice reading a positive and uplifting book that left me with a warm feeling in my heart. The romance was sweet, yet had some spice to it. It went beyond just the love story of Abby and Doug. Freeman did such a great job of developing the secondary characters, especially Abby’s father and sisters, and they each had a pivotal role in the book. Not only was this a love story between a man and a woman, but a love story of a family as well. These kinds of books are the best in my opinion! I’m looking forward to reading more from Kathryn Freeman.
A former pharmacist, I’m now a medical writer who also writes romance. Some days a racing heart is a medical condition, others it’s the reaction to a hunky hero.
With two teenage boys and a husband who asks every Valentine’s Day whether he has to buy a card (yes, he does), any romance is all in my head. Then again, his unstinting support of my career change proves love isn’t always about hearts and flowers – and heroes come in many disguises.
