A Recipe For Disaster

A Recipe for Disaster

by Belinda Missen

Synopsis

Meet Lucy, master wedding cake baker, idealistic school canteen crusader, and someone whose broken heart just won’t seem to mend…

Lucy is quietly confident that she has made the right choices in life. Surrounded by friends and family in a small country town, Lucy can easily suppress the feeling that something is missing from her life.

But when a blast from the past arrives in the form of her estranged husband, international celebrity chef Oliver Murray, Lucy’s carefully constructed life begins to crumble beneath her like overbaked meringue.

Is Oliver’s return all business or is it motivated by something more?

A Recipe for Disaster starts long after most love stories would have ended, proving it is never too late to offer someone a second slice of cake or a second chance.

Perfect for fans of Carole Mathews, Mhairi McFarlane and Carrie Hope Fletcher.

4.5 STARS

A Recipe of Disaster by Belinda Missen is a sweet, enjoyable chick lit novel. It had just the right combination of romance, laughter, and angst!

Lucy is a fantastic and talented cake baker. She is tasked with baking her friend a wedding cake on short notice when her world is rocked in the form of her estranged husband. As you might imagine, her new boyfriend is not really thrilled. After a horrendous outburst with Lucy being humiliated, her life seems like it’s headed toward disaster. Sometimes life throws you a curveball, and Lucy and her estranged husband, Oliver, might just be granted a second chance. As you will come to see, it won’t be an easy journey, but I promise, you will love being a part of this second chance romance.

I liked both Lucy and Oliver. Oliver seemed more mature than Lucy, but that’s what made her such an easy character to relate to. I loved Oliver’s determination in trying to win Lucy’s heart again.

I haven’t had the pleasure of reading anything by Belinda Missen before, but I’m so glad I discovered her. Her writing is very good, and I loved the setting. So, I’m looking forward to reading more from her.

Belinda Missen is an award-winning and best-selling author, screenwriter, and freelance writer from Geelong, Australia.

A reader from an early age, Belinda began writing her own stories shortly after her love affair with Steven Spielberg’s film Jurassic Park began. What began as fan-fiction soon took deeper root, and she was scribbling out strange little stories in empty notebooks she found laying around the house.

With qualifications in transport and office administration, and a combined career of fifteen years in these industries, Belinda decided to uproot everything in 2013 and return to her first love of writing. She now writes full-time, between cups of coffee, binge watching television, and feeding her cats and husband.

In April 2016, she was awarded the JOLT Courthouse Youth Arts Award in the Inspire 26+ Category for her piece Obsession.

In February 2017, her book Love And Other Midnight Theories clawed its way to the top of the Amazon charts in its category of Performing Arts, beating JK Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. True story – she has the screenshots to prove it.

Bring Down the Stars (Beautiful Hearts Duet Book 1) by Emma Scott Review Tour with Excerpt

21 Aug

I fell for Connor Drake. I didn’t want to; I fought against it, but I fell in love with him anyway. With his words. With his poetry. With him. The gentleness and beauty of his soul that speaks directly to mine. He writes as if he can feel my heart, hear its cadence and compose the exact right lyrics to accompany every beat and flow.

I’m in love with Connor…so why do I feel an inexplicable pull to his best friend, Weston? Grouchy, sullen, brooding Weston Turner, who could cut you down with a look. Fiercely intelligent with a razor sharp wit and acid tongue, he’s the exact opposite of Connor in every way, and yet there’s electricity in the air between us. The thorny barbs Weston wraps around himself can’t keep me away.

But the more time I spend with these men, the more tangled and confused my emotions become. When they both sign up for the Army Reserves during a time of increasing strife in the Middle East, I fear I’ll never unravel my own heart that sometimes feels as if it will tear straight down the middle…for both of them.

**********
Bring Down the Stars is an emotional, angst-filled novel of unrequited love by bestselling author, Emma Scott, and is inspired by the classic tale, Cyrano de Bergerac. (Roxanne) It is Book I in the Beautiful Hearts Duet, coming this summer. Book II, Long Live the Beautiful Hearts, to be released a few weeks later. #lovetriangle #confusedhearts #notamenage

Christie’s Review

5 +++++ STARS

A Top Read of 2018

An All-Time Favorite

Pardon the pun…but “Oh My Stars.” What a wonderful, emotional read with all the feels!

I haven’t read something quite like this in a while. Scott had me entranced with her words from the very first pages. She has some kind of magic she weaves with the stroke of her keyboard. I knew full well there would be some sort of love triangle, but this isn’t your normal love triangle.

I won’t say too much about the plot itself. However, please know that each character, Connor, Autumn and Wes are all good people. Connor has been blessed with good lucks, wealth, and charm, never wielding it over others to get his way. People just seem to gravitate toward him. He isn’t a scholar or anything, but he is a loyal friend. Just ask Weston….

Weston met Connor  in middle school, the new scholarship student at a very prestigious school. Connor immediately took him under his wing when he was being bullied by other students. A deep, abiding friendship was formed, and Wes vowed to always be loyal to him. He is, but when Autumn enters the picture, it becomes harder. But, Wes, wields his beautiful words to win her heart, not for himself but Connor., even though Autumn had Wes’s heart from the very moment he saw her.

Autumn was the sweet, beautiful, caring soul that captured both men’s hearts without ever realizing it. She is with Connor, but something continually draws her toward Weston. She was cheated on, so she vows never to do that to someone else. She would never destroy the bond Connor and Wes have even if it causes her pain and confusion.

I absolutely love when a modern book is inspired by a classic. This one was inspired by Cyrano de Bergerac. It stayed true to the basics of the classic, but Emma Scott made it all her own, and it was magic. I now am waiting VERY IMPATIENTLY for the next part of the duet. There is still so much of this tale to be told!!!

EXCERPT

I took the cement stairs into the library and entered the cool, hushed confines of the main reading room. None of the long mahogany desks with green-shaded lamps were empty. One of the university clubs had taken over two-thirds of the space. The rest of the tables were filled with students like me, trying to get a head start their course load.

I finally found an empty seat at the end of a table, opposite a blond guy engrossed in reading. His open backpack spilled books and papers into what I hoped could be my table territory.

“Excuse me,” I whispered. “Can I…?”

He looked up, his expression vaguely hostile. Piercing blue-green eyes set in a stunningly handsome, if angular, face met mine. High cheekbones, sharp chin and long straight nose. He looked chiseled out of smooth stone at first glance, then his features softened for a moment as his gaze swept over me. Something like recognition lit up his eyes, and I could see the gears of his brain turning as he studied, analyzed, and then came to a conclusion. Not a good one, I guessed, because his expression hardened again.

“Yeah, sure,” he muttered. He stood up, leaning his tall, slender frame over the table to corral the books back into his pack.

“Thanks,” I said, thinking if he wasn’t a basketball player or a runner, he was a model.

All right, girl, get a grip.

I sat, cracked my textbook and settled in to read. I wasn’t through two pages when the words blurred to nonsensical gibberish and my skin prickled with the sensation of being watched.

I glanced up, straight into the ocean eyes of the guy across from me. A million thoughts swirled in their soft depths before they quickly glanced down. He slouched lower in his chair, disappearing behind his book—the collected poems of Walt Whitman. Part of me wanted to melt. Good lord, a hot guy reading poetry? I was only human.

And this is how you wound up with a broken heart in the first place.

I must’ve been frowning at the book because the guy held it up and said, “Not a fan?”

I blinked back to reality. “No,” I said. “I mean, yes. I love Whitman. And poetry in general. I just… Never mind.”

He regarded me a long moment, then slowly closed Whitman and picked up Atlas Shrugged from his short stack of books.

“Ugh, that’s even worse,” I muttered without thinking, and then shook my head. “God, sorry, I left my filter at home. Don’t listen to me.”

His lip curled. “Is there anything in my collection you approve of?”

A hot, smart asshole, I thought. Game on.

“Sorry,” I said. “I’m not in a good mood today and it’s making me forget my manners. I’ll leave you to read your capitalist propaganda in peace.”

The guy’s eyebrows shot up, disappearing under the blond hair that fell across his brow. “Not a fan of Rand either?” He smirked knowingly. “No, of course you aren’t.”

My blood heated at his flippant tone. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

The guy nodded at my textbook—Global Responsibility and the Third-World Hunger Epidemic—and shrugged, as if that answered everything.

“Oh.” I frowned. “Well… yes. I mean, Rand’s point of view is purely capitalist and mine isn’t. Not by a long shot.”

The student sitting to my right exchanged glances with the girl sitting across from him. Then both packed up their books and left.

“We’re being disruptive,” I said to my across-table neighbor. “We need to stop talking now.”

He leaned back in his chair, his eyes intent on me. “So what’s your point of view?”

“My what?”

“You said your point of view isn’t capitalist.” He raised a brow. “So what is it?”

“Humanist, I suppose. Since you asked. I think everyone, regardless of race, creed, income-level, or sex should be granted the same shot as anyone else.” I raised a brow at him. “But you don’t?”

“Are you asking me or telling me?” he said with a slight chuckle. “Since we’re tossing labels around, I’m a realist.” He held up his book. “And not a fan of Rand either.”

“You’re not?” I leaned back too, crossing my arms. “Are you just messing with me or what?”

“Maybe,” he said. “What do you care what I think anyway?”

My mouth fell slack. “I don’t. Thanks for reminding me.”

“No problem.”

“Wow, you’re rude.”

“That’s the word on the street.”

“I can see why.” I lifted my own book up to signal conversation over, but my eyes wouldn’t focus. I could feel the hum of his presence like a field of electrical wires, getting under my skin and infiltrating my thoughts. The buzz went beyond distraction. It felt like a challenge had been laid down.

And I never walked away from a challenge.

I lowered my book to see the guy’s glance hide behind his book again.

“Well?” I demanded.

“Well what?”

Why are you watching me?

“Why are you reading Ayn Rand if you don’t like her either?”

“Required reading for an English Lit minor.”

“And your major? Let me guess, pre-law.”

“God, no,” he said.

I raised my eyebrows but he offered nothing more. “Are you going to make me run through Amherst’s list of majors until I guess which one is yours?”

“Yes,” he said. “Alphabetically, please.”

A laugh burst out of me against my will, and the guy almost smiled. Every one of his hard angles softened.

“Economics,” he said. “But I don’t know what I’m doing with it.”

“That feels like the most honest thing you’ve said to me so far,” I said.

“And that’s important to you?”

“Yes,” I said, my laughter dying away as I remembered Mark and that girl, naked in the bed I’d slept in just the night before. “Honesty is very important.”

He lifted one shoulder.

“You don’t agree?” I asked.

“Being honest is sometimes mistaken for being rude.”

“You must be really honest,” I said.

Again, he almost smiled. “Must be.”

Satisfied that I’d held my own against this beautiful but hostile member of the opposite sex, I went back to my book…for eight entire seconds before my skin started prickling again. The electric hum of his attention was impossible to ignore.

When I looked up this time, he didn’t look away but cleared his throat.

“I’m Weston Turner.”

In a world where I had no say, violence became my refuge, and nothing else mattered.

Not even my own life.

Until her.

Skyler Bell.

It all started the first time I heard that voice. Giving me hope for tomorrow. My first love was everything all at once.

Consuming.

Maddening.

Forever.

Mine.

Except, I never imagined there were secrets that needed to be shared. Lies that needed to be confessed. Truths that needed to be told.

Demons that needed to be buried.

Once I realized the depth, the longing, the sadness and sorrow in her eyes mirrored mine, it was too late. Love didn’t come to me as heartbreak, it came as everything I’ve ever wanted. Walking away wasn’t an option, but it was the only choice I had.

I finally found the price of love and it cost me…

My soul.

My back hit the concrete wall with a thud.
“You got what you wanted, so you can go now. Because I can’t stand fucking looking at you any longer!”
I reached for her on pure impulse. “Skyler—” As soon as she felt my strong arm’s wrap around her waist, she kneed me in the balls.
“We’re even now, because I hate you too.”
Push.
I groaned in pain, and in her fuck-me heels, she took off running toward the exit. Breathing through the dis-comfort for a moment, I hauled ass after her. My

boots pounding the wet pavement, chasing her in the pouring rain. Catching up with her outside the back of the dark building.
I gripped her arm and roughly turned her toward me, never expecting what happened next.
“No!” she shouted bloody murder, once again shoving me as hard as she could. She didn’t falter, losing her fucking shit on me. “I loved you!” She ignored the sting I knew her hand must have felt every time it connected with my face and body. Hitting me anywhere she could.
I tried blocking each and every blow, driving her further to push and hit me harder. Taking out every malicious word I’d said to her, and years of pent-up anger with herself, on me.
“I fucking loved you!”
“Cutie, calm the fuck down,” I ordered, trying to grip onto her wrists.
“Fuck you!” she yelled, punching and shoving me more, the closer I came toward her. “You don’t know anything! Nothing!”
“Skyler, enough!”
Raising her hand up to slap me across the face, I gripped onto her wrist and spun her around before she could react. She lost her footing which only made it easier for me to carry her up into my arms. Striding over to the nearest car that appeared abandoned in a secluded corner of the alley.
“Stop it,” I warned, controlling her body from thrashing around. Pissing her off even more.
“You stop it! Put me down!”
And I did, slamming her ass on the hood. Taking ahold of both her wrists with my hand and placing them above her head. I pinned her down, and still she fought with every ounce of courage she had left in her.
“For fucks sake, stop!”
“No!”
“Well then, I’m just gonna havta fuck the fight right out of ya.”
“Don’t you dar—”
My lips crashed onto hers, slipping my tongue into her mouth. Demanding complete and utter control. She weakly thrashed around, and I held her tighter against my chest, kissing her fucking senseless.
Groaning against her lips, “Fuck… I missed you…”

EXCERPT:

SHE WAS AS stupid as she was transparent. She didn’t care if Grant wanted to date again. She wasn’t interested in Grant like that at all. But she had to do something to…something. To diffuse that very obvious moment that had just happened between herself and Wyatt.

She didn’t like this. Not at all.

She didn’t like feeling like she didn’t have the upper hand on a social situation. Didn’t like feeling as if everything around her was so far beyond her she could never reach it.

That was her entire experience in the early days of dating Damien and being his wife. Feeling like she had just walked into the room in the middle of a conversation and had to spend every moment thereafter playing catch-up.

She hated that feeling. More than anything.

Well, that wasn’t true. Actually, she hated finding out that her husband had been having an affair for years and years even more. Although, it was a different side of the same coin. Being out of the loop. Being ignorant. Being small.

Somehow less than everyone that surrounded her.

Wyatt didn’t make her feel like she was less, but he made her feel something. And she didn’t like it.

She’d gotten her balance in a small sense when she had demanded that Laz put Wyatt’s drink on her tab.

But then, he had touched her.

He had touched her, and she hadn’t been able to disguise her response to it. She could see it in his eyes. That he thought he knew exactly what she felt. And even if it was true, even if he did, she was not going to let him have that.

She enjoyed this. That hesitation in his eyes. The tightening in his jaw. The fact that she had him on his back foot. Yeah, she liked that a lot better than feeling like she was on hers.

He tilted his head back. “Grant, huh?”

“He seems like a nice guy. Good-looking too.”

“Right.” His teeth were clenched so tight she’d be surprised if he didn’t chip one. Maybe that shouldn’t satisfy her. But it did.

“Just wondering if you have the inside track on that.” She tried to look both cool and interested at the same time.

He lifted a brow. “I expect you could ask him yourself.”

“Oh, I expect I could.” She kept her tone light but steady. She had a feeling it was that lightness that had him caught so off guard.

“Then why ask me?” He was trying to sound casual too. Unlike her, he was failing.

“Everyone could use a good wingman, Wyatt. If you wanted to be mine, I would hardly say no.” She smiled, and he didn’t.

“I’ll pass.”

She lifted her shoulder. “Suit yourself. But, I would have returned the favor.”

“Wingmen are for amateurs, honey,” he said. “I’ve never needed one yet.”

He walked away from her, heading back over to their shared corner of the saloon. She was captivated watching him. Even angry at him. Even with him angry at her.

Those broad shoulders, narrow waist. His ass in those jeans.

She didn’t know who she was when she looked at him. The things she noticed. What it made her want.

She stood for a moment and took a breath trying to get a hold of herself. It was only then that she realized her hands were shaking. Dammit.

She crossed the room, making her way back over to the table. “Why don’t you sit next to Grant?” Wyatt asked, giving her an evil smirk from his position in his chair.

And that made her suspect that he didn’t believe her at all. Asshole.

“Sure,” she said, easily, casually. She took a seat next to Grant. “We haven’t had a chance to talk much,” she said, turning to the other man.

Grant was looking at her, somewhat blandly, and she felt a small twinge of guilt. She wasn’t interested in him. She didn’t want him to think she was. Not when she wasn’t going to actually follow up.

That was a new low. Using a widowed man as a pawn in her control game.

But, his extreme and apparent lack of interest made her feel less guilty immediately.

Somehow, they stumbled through the rest of the evening making conversation. And she could feel Wyatt’s eyes on her the entire time. But she refused to look back at him.

Excerpt

I look around and glimpse a rich red armoire, his deep mahogany bed, and the midnight medallion velvet quilt over crisp white sheets before feeling strong arms slide around my waist from behind. They tighten and pull me close against his broad chest. I tip my head back as he leans down to nip and suck at the exposed skin between my neck and shoulder. I get a whiff of the rich cologne he’s wearing.

Oh. My. God.

“You have to talk to me through this, Cassidy,” Caleb murmurs against my neck. “I need to know where you’re at.”

“Here’s good.”

Chills run through my body as he soothes the area with his tongue.

“Good.” I feel his smile against my neck.

My nipples, though they had softened slightly from before when they were rubbing up against his muscular chest, were tightening again. And they weren’t even being touched.

I slide my hand to wrap around the back of his neck, tangling it in his thick hair. One hand slides down to my hips and he slowly begins to rock into me. The other travels north toward my cashmere-encased breasts. Slowly, he starts strumming his thumb against my rigid nipple while still working the tendon on the side of my neck.

I gasp at his movements before letting out a soft moan of desire that can’t be misunderstood.

My hand drops from his neck and I reach around the back of him, reaching for him. He quickly moves the hand from my thigh and captures my hands before they can reach their target, his rock-hard body.

I turn my head farther and twist slightly. Our eyes meet. I’m panting. His gaze is banked in fire.

I want the blaze.

“Let me touch you,” I whisper.

“I can’t.” His voice is jagged.

“Please.” I’m almost begging.

“Cassidy,” he breathes. “I want to make this as beautiful for you as I can. I don’t want to lose control.”

Wiggling around so I face him, I pull my hands free and place them on his biceps. His chest is moving up and down under his untucked polo. I can feel his tension under my fingers.

Instinctively, I reach for the hem of my sweater and pull it over my head. Once my hair clears, I toss it somewhere. Frankly, I could care less where it goes. I’m now standing in front of the man I love in a sheer black bra that leaves nothing to the imagination. His eyes fly to mine, incredulous I pulled such a move. I shrug.

“Lose the control, Caleb. I trust you.”

I’ve never seen a myriad of expressions cross someone’s face in such a short span of time. Hot, heavy desire, anticipation, and tenderness are all projected at me.

Meet Kristen:

1P0A9162

Kristen was born and raised in a small resort town in her beloved Montana. In her mid-twenties, she decided to stretch her wings and move to the Pacific Northwest, where she made her home for more than a dozen years.

During that time, Kristen wrote many romance novels and joined organizations such as RWA and other small writing groups. She spent countless hours in workshops, and more mornings than she can count up before the dawn so she could write before going to work. She submitted many manuscripts to agents and editors alike, but was always told no. In the summer of 2012, the self-publishing scene was new and thriving, and Kristen had one goal: to publish just one book. It was something she longed to cross off of her bucket list.

Not only did she publish one book, she’s since published close to thirty titles, many of which have hit the USA Today, New York Times and Wall Street Journal Bestsellers lists. She continues to self publish, best known for her With Me In Seattle and Boudreaux series, and is also proud to work with William Morrow, a division of HarperCollins, with the Fusion Series.

Kristen and her husband, John, make their home in her hometown of Whitefish, Montana with their two pugs and two cats.

Closer, the stunning conclusion to the Taint Duet from USA Today bestselling author Carmen Jenner is LIVE!

Closer_Carmen_Jenner_AMAZON.jpg

Levi Quinn has it all—money, groupies, a panty-melting smile, and a really big d*ck.

At least, he had it all. Until an angry redhead joined the Taint world tour and turned his life upside-down. Levi fell in love with her. His bandmate did too. It did not end well.

Brielle Kagawa doesn’t keep company with rock stars, but when this gifted cellist finds herself kicked out of the Orchestre de Parisan all-expenses-paid gig in the south of France seems too good to be true.

Because it is.

The man footing the bill might be a disorderly drunk, but he has an offer she can’t refuse—stay in his chateau and play for the month. No strings attached.

Yeah right.

The truth about rock stars is that they’re awfully good players, but Levi isn’t the only one who knows how to master a set of strings.

He’s broken-hearted.

She doesn’t have a heart to break.
