As Good as Gold

by Patricia Furstenberg

Synopsis

As engaging as a tail wag.

Celebrating the simple things in life as seen through the eyes of our old time favorite furry friends, “As Good as Gold” is a volume of poetry revealing the talent and humor we always knew our dogs possessed.

Dogs are full of questions, yet they are famed sellers of innocence especially when it comes to explaining their mishaps and often foolish effervescence through such pondering as “Why IS a Cat Not Like a Dog”, “As Brown as Chocolate”, “Silver Stars and Puppy Tail” or, best yet, “Dog or Book?”

A book with an enormous heart for readers of all ages, it includes 35 poems and haiku accompanied by expressive portraits of our canine friends. The poems are grouped in: Questions, Colors, Musings and Haiku.

* Ideal to boost you up by reading one poem at a time,
* Great conversational piece to have around on a rainy day,
* Fantastic tool to discuss colors in nature and everyday questions with your little ones,
* A gentle way to introduce children to animals’ feelings,
* Amazing picture to cheer you up.
* An ideal gift for any dog lovers!

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

This is the ABSOLUTE PERFECT book for poetry lovers, dog lovers, and nature lovers!

I have two great loves in my life, outside of my family, and that is books and dogs! Furstenberg captures exactly what makes dogs so very special. She gives us a peek into their lives and their connection to nature. I don’t usually read too much poetry, but I just adored this collection. The poetry I have read in the past hasn’t brought characters to life for me, but this one did. Each dog, cat, and animal was a character to me that I could see clearly in my mind as was each setting, whether in a home or out in nature.

Not only was this a book about dogs, it was a book about friendship and the importance of loving things different from yourself as was perfectly illustrated in the relationships between cats and dogs. People could certainly use a lesson in this! She also reiterated the loving relationship between dogs and people which certainly reminded me why I love my sweet Lab girls, Honey and Lily and why “in their hearts, they are as good as gold.”

If you are looking for a book to bring a smile to your face and warm your heart, you can’t go wrong with this little magical book of poetry! If you aren’t a dog lover or animal lover, Patricia Furstenberg just might make you one with this book of poetry!

BLURB:

Kyle Hicks started with nothing. Now he’s a self-made man. And as luck would have it, his latest project as a real estate developer lands him in Cliffside Bay with his very best friends, The Dogs. At the end of his grueling work days, Kyle’s got just enough time left for his buddies and not much else. Except maybe another of his many no-strings-attached trysts with whatever sexy lady catches his eye.

Violet Ellis is struggling. She’s a single mother, the proprietor of a near-failing shop, and a champion for the historical integrity of her dear Cliffside Bay. She has enough to deal with between her three-year-old son and her languishing business, but she’s still prepared to take on real estate mogul Kyle Hicks to save the charm of the place she calls home.

When a twist of fate forces these two to put aside their differences and rely on one another, they just might find that sometimes the strongest love grows out of the hurts and the scars that we carry with us always.

The fourth installment of The Cliffside Bay Series by bestselling author Tess Thompson follows the interwoven stories of five best friends, the beach community they love, and the women who captivate them. Prepare to get lost in a wave of small town charm, men you want to take home to your mother, and smart, resilient heroines you wished lived next door.

HERE COMES THE SWOON — YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!

“Honor, what can we do to help with the baby?”

“Baby 101, that’s what,” Honor said as they followed her into the elevator. “We had one of the staff go out and get formula and diapers.” She put a keycard into a slot and punched the top floor button.

The elevator moved. Dakota squealed. “Elevator, Mama.”

Violet’s stomach lurched as they came to a stop. They all exited into a hallway. A plush, sage-green carpet felt wonderful under her feet, like walking on a firm mattress. She would love to take off her shoes and let it soothe her tired feet. The scent of lilies from a vase on a rectangular table tickled her nose. Where did he get lilies this time of year? Probably flown in from some third world country for exorbitant amounts of money. None of which trickled down to the poor farmers who grew them.

“Dakota, this is a very special floor,” Honor said. “Kyle’s a part owner so he stays in the very nicest suite in the whole resort.”

“Wow,” Dakota said.

“He’s not Superman,” Violet said under her breath.

Honor shot her a look. “Be nice. You have the power right now.”

“I’ll try not to let it go to my head,” Violet said.

“Stop being so grumpy,” Honor said. “Wait until you see this baby. She’s precious. Seriously, you’ll want to eat her up.”

“Eat a baby?” Dakota asked.

“Not really,” Honor said. “It just means she’s yummy. I mean, she’s pretty and I just want to kiss her all over.”

“Oh,” Dakota said. “That’s weird.”

“I have a thing for babies,” Honor said. “What can I say?”

Violet flushed with shame. Honor couldn’t have a baby of her own. Seeing a newborn must hurt. And here was cavalier Kyle Hicks with one just dropped into his lap like everything else in the man’s life.

They reached the door of the suite. Honor didn’t bother to knock; she simply pressed the keycard against the door and entered, gesturing for Violet and Dakota to follow.

“Don’t be loud,” Violet said to Dakota. “The baby might be sleeping.”

Dakota mimicked her finger to her lips and made a shushing sound.

When they entered the suite, Violet had to physically restrain herself from gasping out loud. The suite was magnificent. The same white marble floors as the lobby shone under the light of a chandelier made of sparkling glass. Posh, richly hued furniture in greens and purples, fluffy rugs, and glass tabletops with silver trim were arranged in geometric perfection. Paintings of various bright and vibrant flowers decorated the creamy sage walls. The bank of windows looked out on the entire town of Cliffside Bay, surrounding country roads, forests, and meadows. If it weren’t foggy today, or you would be able to see the endless waters of the Pacific.

She quickly forgot all of that at the sight of Kyle Hicks with a baby in his arms. A spot of sunshine had broken through the gray sky and washed the room and the man in a warm glow. She drew closer, mesmerized. He cradled the baby against his chest and softly sang “You Are My Sunshine.” Kyle Hicks knew a lullaby. Go figure.

About Tess

Like most of her characters, Tess Thompson hails from a small town and will always feel like a small town girl, despite the fact she’s lived in Seattle for over twenty-five years. She loves music and dancing, books and bubble baths, cooking and wine, movies and snuggling. She cries at sappy commercials and thinks kissing in the rain should be done whenever possible. Although she tries to act like a lady, there may or may not have been a few times in the last several years when she’s gotten slightly carried away watching the Seattle Seahawks play, but that could also just be a nasty rumor.

She currently lives in a suburb of Seattle, Washington with her brand new husband, the hero of her own love story, and their Brady Bunch clan of two sons, two daughters and five cats, all of whom keep her too busy, often confused, but always amazed. Yes, that’s four kids and five cats. Pray for her.

Exclusive LAWBREAKER Excerpt:

From Ben’s point of view…

The rumble of the idling V8 engine vibrated through the truck.

Faint gasoline fumes wafted in through the cranked-down windows, then blew out just as fast on the crosswind.

But none of those distractions fazed Shay.

Her attention had fixed solely on me. “Why do you like me?”

More than like you.”

She didn’t say anything to my clarification. Instead, those expressive green eyes searched mine. Her chest rose with a measured inhale, fell on a slower exhale.

Her slender brows twitched down for a split second. “But why?”

A million reasons came to mind.

But in that moment, one echoed with more force than the rest.

“You live loud…without saying a word. When you’re around, you drown out all the noise. When I’m with you, there is nothing else.”

Silence filled the cab.

We sat on opposite sides. Lap belts held us securely down.

But she flattened her small hand over the worn leather of the bench seat, into the space between us.

I bridged the remaining gap, spread my fingers wide, until my larger pinky touched hers, knuckle to tip.

Long seconds drifted by.

The engine rumbled.

The crosswind blew.

But we didn’t move away from our fragile connection.

We stared at each other…and saw through every defense we’d built. As we inhaled and exhaled, breaths coming faster, shallower, I got the sense that we breathed common air for the very first time.

We’d come from different worlds, but we occupied the same space in that moment. In spite of our differences. Maybe because of them.

But on her next quick breath, her brow furrowed. Her hand twitched away.

Whatever she struggled with had broken through. That spiky armor clamped back around her.

Moment over.

And yet, she still stared at me. Gaze fierce. Jaw set. “When I’m with you, I become someone else. I forget who I am. And I can’t let that happen. You make me believe I can trust again. And that terrifies me.”

I stared back at her, undaunted. “I will never let you forget who you are. Become someone else with me, someone better. Get terrified; we’ll only grow stronger.”

After a long beat, she sucked in a deep breath. Then she pursed her lips and blew it out, nice and slow.

She remained silent. Committed to nothing.

But then I felt her pinky press against mine. Tentative, at first. Then firmer, solid.

She’d spoken, in her own way. And I’d heard loud and clear: I’ll become someone better, I’ll get terrified…just as long as you don’t let me down.

I gusted out a relieved sigh. “Well, hell. No pressure there.”

She didn’t laugh. Her eyes narrowed.

I reached farther and slid my hand over hers. “I won’t let you down.”

Nothing in the world could make me blow this…even though the weight of our world rested on my shoulders.

Including lightening the mood. Now. Before she changes her mind and bolts from your truck.

EXCERPT

Prologue

I died yesterday, or so I’ve been told.

Yesterday is the day my life changed but how or why is still a mystery. There are things I know and there are things that they’ve told me but I can’t seem to trust any of it.

I know I’m a woman but I don’t know my age. I know how to hold a cup in the same way I know it’s rude to stick the end of a knife in my mouth. So, somewhere along the way, someone cared enough to drill manners into me. Those are the things I know, the things I can trust but as for the rest…

They tell me I’m in Holland but can I believe them? I don’t remember if I’m Dutch but I also don’t remember if I’m not. I can’t speak Dutch. I’ve been trying all morning but can one lose a language overnight? I seem to have lost everything else. Who knows? Maybe I took the wrong train or something and just rolled up in the wrong city. That would make sense except that it’s not just my sense of place that’s missing. It’s my sense of everything. I have no name, no age and no identity. Yesterday I died and today I’m still here.

They’ve left me alone now while they try to puzzle out what to do and in the meantime I’m going to try to remember stuff. I don’t know how long they’ll leave me alone but I need to take this opportunity to come up with some answers to all the questions they’ve been throwing at me like who the hell I am.

Slipping out of bed I recoil as bare feet meets cold tiles, but that’s not going to stop me. Pulling the back of the hospital gown closed in an effort to retain some degree of dignity, I shuffle over to the bathroom and then the mirror only to stare into the face of a stranger.

It doesn’t matter what I look like or that I’m suffering from the worst case of bed-head known to man. It doesn’t matter that my eyes are green or that my hair is that shade of nondescript mouse that keeps colourists in business. The only thing that matters is my reflection, which holds no clues as to my identity. I’m a stranger to them. I’m a stranger to me.

My body holds a clue though – just one.

I push up my sleeve again to stare at the tattoo on my arm. The tattoo puzzles me. It’s not me, or part of me or who I think I am and yet it’s there, a large indelible letter V.

I have no idea what it stands for. Oh, I’m not stupid or anything or, at least I don’t think I am. I can’t quote which exams I’ve passed or if indeed I’ve ever attended school but I do know V stands for victory. But what does it mean to me? Am I victorious? Am I making a statement about something? It must be important because it’s the only tattoo I have. It’s also the only clue.

I’m tired now. My eyelids collapse over my eyes even as I struggle to shift them upwards as I remember the cocktail the nurse told me to swallow like a good girl. I want everything to go away. I want to hide under the blankets and forget. I’ve already forgotten…

The Kithseeker

The Kithseeker by M.K. Wiseman

Synopsis

France, 1680

Liara’s defense of the Wizard Nagarath has rendered Anisthe incantate–bereft of magick–but even this cannot guarantee her safety. Because the death of her father-in-magick would seal the girl’s fate, necessity demands she and her wizard maintain a watchful eye on the war mage, while protecting her from his dark designs.

Anisthe has embarked on a journey across Europe, aided by his half-fey manservant with an agenda all his own. They search for a legendary mirror that contains the world’s most powerful magick. Although the stuff of fairytales, the possibility of its existence compels Nagarath and Liara to seek the artifact themselves. Both know that should Anisthe lay claim to that power, Liara would be at his mercy and not even Nagarath could save her.

Thus, the pair find themselves at Versailles, surrounded by agents who ferret out magick users and destroy them. Uncertain who is friend and who is foe, with their rival on their heels, they must discover the mirror before Anisthe releases its evil, or worse, it lays claim to Liara’s magick and brings doom upon them all.

How did you come up with the idea for this book?

In 2004 I had a very vivid post-surgery dream that just… it haunted me for weeks. As I had a bit of down time, I set about ‘solving it’ looking at it the dream as though it had posed actual questions to be answered: Who were theses people? What about their actions mattered? In the end, my work in the ‘collection preservation and book assessment’ department of the campus library helped me develop the rest of the “aboutness” for the Bookminder series.

What was your favorite thing about each character?

Nagarath’s bone-headed-ness; Liara’s resolve. (Terrible combination, really. I love it.)

Do you have a playlist you listen to when writing?

The series has a Spotify playlist, actually. But I don’t listen to it while I work. Music distracts me more often than not. You see, my brain tends to latch on to musical sounds and ride along the ebb and flow of lyrics and notes so, for writing, I prefer birdsong, rain on a windowpane, coffee shop chatter, etc. Oddly enough, I cannot write in silence. My brain makes too much ‘noise’ when it’s quiet.

Any favorite foods/drinks you like while writing?

I’ll indulge in a decaf coffee (and if there’s a good pastry handy, that too) but often I won’t have a thing. Actually, when in the thick of it, I will forget food and drink and getting-out-of-my-chair and the world at large.

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Well, I fell into writing sorta from an unexpected direction (I was trying to become a Pixar animator when I started writing the manuscript that was to become my first novel.) I found my publisher via an offhand remark on Twitter and so don’t really know when/how I consciously became aware that I wanted to be a writer. Odd answer? It’s sorta like that old frog in boiling water analogy. I know now that I want to be a writer … but that’s kinda because I don’t think I could envision stopping at this point. I’ve grown a bit obsessed.

What are some are your favorite reads?

Gammage Cup, Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul, Bridge to Terabithia, Redwall series, Mary Russell series, the original Sherlock Holmes stories … I tend to re-wear the same grooves over and over. Some of these listed I’ve read upwards of 2-3 dozen times. Sometimes (ha!) I’ll just pick up a favorite and read about 30 pages of it and then put it back on the shelf, having satisfied some sort of unknown need within me. I have a massive and swaying TBR pile in my office (and on Goodreads) that I really need to tackle. I’ve probably a few new favorites I have not yet discovered. 🙂

The Pretender

The Pretender

by Katie Ward

Synopsis

France 2000: Two babies are born on the same day just two hours apart – but to very different lives. Isabella is a Princess and heir to the French throne, while Sophia is born into a life of poverty and abuse at the hands of her father. At the age of 18, Sophia runs away from home. That same night, Isabella is also fleeing from the burden of her royal life when she finds Sophia slumped at the palace gates. Amazed by how alike they look, Isabella proposes a daring plot – to exchange their lives for one week.
‘The Pretender’ is an emotionally intense and compelling story of friendship, love and the strange power of destiny.

Christie’s Review

4 STARS

I love a modern twist on classics, but an author has to be careful to make the retelling their own, and Katie Ward definitely made this book her own. It’s an adaptation of The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain, and Ward added her own flair to it to make it completely original.

Sophia and Isabella were born into two different worlds. Both feel trapped in their lives but for very, very different reasons. Sophie feels trapped by her abusive and neglectful parents, not knowing how she will ever escape them. She has some respite in a boarding school, but she will soon be returning to the horror of her parents. Isabella was born into royalty as a princess. She has opportunities that Sophia could only dream of, yet she feels trapped by the expectations placed on her. She can’t be an ordinary girl, going to movies or traveling on a public train. One fateful day these two girls will cross paths and go on a journey neither expected.

I always love a story about self discovery, and both of these young girls are on a journey to discover who they are and just possibly find a love they weren’t expecting. This book doesn’t just have one strong female but two.

I highly recommend reading this one if you like enchanting royal tales or a modern twist on a classic. This was quite a charming, enjoyable read!

Katie Ward always knew she wanted to write for a living. However, she was told by her careers advisor that “it might be more appropriate for you to work in a shop”. When Katie didn’t get the grades she needed to get into college, she negotiated a three month trial. After successfully completing the course she secured a place at her first choice university to study Journalism.

After realising she wanted to be an author, Katie moved to Dublin where she worked her way up from receptionist to Executive Assistant at Merrill Lynch. Katie continued to write in her spare time, submitting her short story into the “Do the Write Thing” competition being run by Irish TV show ‘Seoige and O’Shea’. This story was originally written when Katie was 14 after she was inspired by an article in her favourite teen magazine. Katie was the only non-Irish author selected to have her story published in an anthology of the same name which reached 19 in the Irish Best sellers List. Katie was also shortlisted for a competition judged by MAN Booker Prize winning author Roddy Doyle which was run by Metro Eireann newspaper.

Katie currently lives in Devon with her cat (aka ‘Her Royal Fluffiness’) where she sings in a community choir and has recently taken up Archery. Katie’s favourite author has been Roald Dahl since she was a child as she loves the dark edge he brings to his books. On the flip side though, Katie loves Disney, magic, unicorns and a good rom com film at the cinema with her friends.
