EWTallDarkIrresistibleCover5x8_MEDIUM

When it comes to love and happily ever after, Leo Stone is a disbeliever. Having been left at the altar by the one woman he thought he’d spend the rest of his life with, he’s vowed to keep his heart to himself and enjoy the one thing he knows won’t affect his emotions . . . hot, dirty sex. Except, what’s a guy to do when a gorgeous woman asks him to be her stand-in boyfriend for two weeks—with benefits? Sign him up, please!

A drunken night one year ago, Peyton Bishop used Leo Stone’s name and photograph to convince her overprotective parents that she was safe living in New York City—in part thanks to a boyfriend she adored. Except Leo, the hot guy she’s had a secret crush on since college, has no idea he’s been cast in the role of her lover. With her cousin’s wedding coming up, and her parent’s expecting to meet this mysterious boyfriend, Peyton is forced to come clean and ask Leo a huge favor.

Leo agrees to be her stand-in boyfriend, but what’s a pretend couple to do when their fake feelings start to become oh-so-real?

Danielle’s Review

4 Stars
This is the 2nd book in the Tall, Dark and Sexy series but can be read as a standalone. This was a fantastic read, just like the first book in this series. I love the fake relationship trope and this book didn’t disappoint.
It’s been 4 years since Peyton and Leo have seen each other, but Peyton never forgot him or her unrequited crush on him. In fact, when she needed to make up a fake boyfriend to get her overprotective parents off her back, he’s the first person that came to mind. Now she has to return to her hometown for a wedding and is expected to bring said boyfriend as her plus one. When Peyton reconnects with Leo through his work, she tells him the truth and luckily, Leo agrees to help her out.
Leo figures what could it hurt to help out an old friend, one he might have made a play for if he hadn’t been in a relationship at the time he met her. He is still attracted to Peyton and would enjoy getting to know her on a more intimate level and since he has sworn off women after being dumped at the altar, a short-term fling is just what he needs.
But what happens when fake feelings become real?
I really enjoyed this story!! It had all the right elements – humor, hot alpha male, smoking chemistry between Peyton and Leo and just a little angst. I really like Erika Wilde’s writing style and the story flows very well. I was thrilled to revisit the characters from the first book and got a taste of what the next in this series will be about. I can’t wait to read the next one!

Excerpt:

The two of them reached Leo’s vehicle, and the doors unlocked with a chirp as he pressed the key fob in his free hand. But instead of opening the passenger side for Peyton, he instead turned her around to face him . . . trapping her between the unyielding metal surface of the car behind her and the tall, muscular man standing less than two feet away.

He casually placed a hand on the door beside her and leaned a few inches closer. “Before we go, I have one more question for you,” he said, his tone serious.

She inhaled the warm, masculine scent of his cologne mingling with leather from his jacket and tried not to let that intoxicating fragrance distract her. “Okay.” She figured it couldn’t get any worse than everything she’d already admitted.

“So, usually, when a person gets propositioned, they get something out of the deal,” he said, his heavy-lidded gaze dropping to her mouth. “You’d be getting a devoted boyfriend out of the arrangement. What would I get?”

She didn’t miss the suggestion in his eyes or the playful curve of his smile. “What do you want?” she asked, unable to hide the breathless quality of her voice.

“Well, for starters, how about a show of good faith, like a kiss?” His free hand came up and gently cupped the side of her face, while his thumb skimmed along her damp bottom lip. “I think it’s important to know what I might be getting myself into and if we’re compatible enough to pull off this whole pretend boyfriend/girlfriend thing. I mean, what if we kiss and we realize that there’s just no spark there? Then this whole farce is doomed for failure.”

He was teasing her. She could see the mischievous glimmer in his eyes, and it provoked a smile from her, even as her breathing escalated with every second that passed with the temptation of finally having Leo’s lips pressed against hers dangling like a carrot in front of her.

“Then kiss me so we can find out,” she whispered.

His thumb dipped down beneath her chin to tip her head back as he lowered his mouth to hers. His lips were surprisingly soft as they found hers for the first time, his teeth gentle as they nibbled at her bottom lip. She couldn’t hold back the needy moan that escaped her throat, or the way her hands instinctively lifted and settled against his solid chest even as he pressed closer to her, his hard thighs and hips pinning her against the car.

“Jesus,” he breathed against her lips in shock, clearly feeling the heat between them that was a spark on the verge of becoming an undeniable blaze.

Sliding both of his hands into her hair, he held her head steady as he came back for another taste, and this time, there wasn’t an ounce of gentleness in the way he swept his tongue inside and plundered her mouth—boldly, deeply, greedily. She made a wild, desperate sound as she fisted her hands in his cotton T-shirt and matched him kiss for kiss, turning that blaze into an inferno that was so hot it threatened to singe them both. And in the moment, neither one of them seemed to care.

She felt the unmistakable ridge of his erection nudging against her belly, and a new hunger spiraled tighter inside her. Desire made her knees weak, her nipples excruciatingly hard, and her panties wet. Everything about Leo Stone was sensation overload to every part of her body, and if there was any worry in either of their minds about pulling off a believable attraction, this kiss eliminated any and all concerns.

By the time Leo finally lifted his mouth from hers, they were both breathing hard from all the heightened sexual tension between them. His dark eyes glittered with lust as he gazed down at her, looking as dazed as she felt.

Somehow, someway, she found her voice. “Was that convincing enough for you?” she asked huskily.

His low, sexy chuckle made her shiver. “Oh, yeah . . . it was definitely a good start.”

New Review: As Good as Gold: A dog’s Life in Poems by Patricia Furstenberg

As Good as Gold by Patricia Furstenberg - ebook, paperback promo

As Good as Gold

by Patricia Furstenberg

Synopsis

As engaging as a tail wag.

Celebrating the simple things in life as seen through the eyes of our old time favorite furry friends, “As Good as Gold” is a volume of poetry revealing the talent and humor we always knew our dogs possessed.

Dogs are full of questions, yet they are famed sellers of innocence especially when it comes to explaining their mishaps and often foolish effervescence through such pondering as “Why IS a Cat Not Like a Dog”, “As Brown as Chocolate”, “Silver Stars and Puppy Tail” or, best yet, “Dog or Book?”

A book with an enormous heart for readers of all ages, it includes 35 poems and haiku accompanied by expressive portraits of our canine friends. The poems are grouped in: Questions, Colors, Musings and Haiku.

* Ideal to boost you up by reading one poem at a time,
* Great conversational piece to have around on a rainy day,
* Fantastic tool to discuss colors in nature and everyday questions with your little ones,
* A gentle way to introduce children to animals’ feelings,

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

This is the ABSOLUTE PERFECT book for poetry lovers, dog lovers, and nature lovers!

I have two great loves in my life, outside of my family, and that is books and dogs! Furstenberg captures exactly what makes dogs so very special. She gives us a peek into their lives and their connection to nature. I don’t usually read too much poetry, but I just adored this collection. The poetry I have read in the past hasn’t brought characters to life for me, but this one did. Each dog, cat, and animal was a character to me that I could see clearly in my mind as was each setting, whether in a home or out in nature.

Not only was this a book about dogs, it was a book about friendship and the importance of loving things different from yourself as was perfectly illustrated in the relationships between cats and dogs. People could certainly use a lesson in this! She also reiterated the loving relationship between dogs and people which certainly reminded me why I love my sweet Lab girls, Honey and Lily and why “in their hearts, they are as good as gold.”

If you are looking for a book to bring a smile to your face and warm your heart, you can’t go wrong with this little magical book of poetry! If you aren’t a dog lover or animal lover, Patricia Furstenberg just might make you one with this book of poetry!

The Pretender

by Katie Ward

Synopsis

France 2000: Two babies are born on the same day just two hours apart – but to very different lives. Isabella is a Princess and heir to the French throne, while Sophia is born into a life of poverty and abuse at the hands of her father. At the age of 18, Sophia runs away from home. That same night, Isabella is also fleeing from the burden of her royal life when she finds Sophia slumped at the palace gates. Amazed by how alike they look, Isabella proposes a daring plot – to exchange their lives for one week.
‘The Pretender’ is an emotionally intense and compelling story of friendship, love and the strange power of destiny.

4 STARS

I love a modern twist on classics, but an author has to be careful to make the retelling their own, and Katie Ward definitely made this book her own. It’s an adaptation of The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain, and Ward added her own flair to it to make it completely original.

Sophia and Isabella were born into two different worlds. Both feel trapped in their lives but for very, very different reasons. Sophie feels trapped by her abusive and neglectful parents, not knowing how she will ever escape them. She has some respite in a boarding school, but she will soon be returning to the horror of her parents. Isabella was born into royalty as a princess. She has opportunities that Sophia could only dream of, yet she feels trapped by the expectations placed on her. She can’t be an ordinary girl, going to movies or traveling on a public train. One fateful day these two girls will cross paths and go on a journey neither expected.

I always love a story about self discovery, and both of these young girls are on a journey to discover who they are and just possibly find a love they weren’t expecting. This book doesn’t just have one strong female but two.

I highly recommend reading this one if you like enchanting royal tales or a modern twist on a classic. This was quite a charming, enjoyable read!

Katie Ward always knew she wanted to write for a living. However, she was told by her careers advisor that “it might be more appropriate for you to work in a shop”. After realising she wanted to be an author, Katie moved to Dublin where she worked her way up from receptionist to Executive Assistant at Merrill Lynch. This story was originally written when Katie was 14 after she was inspired by an article in her favourite teen magazine. Katie was the only non-Irish author selected to have her story published in an anthology of the same name which reached 19 in the Irish Best sellers List. Katie was also shortlisted for a competition judged by MAN Booker Prize winning author Roddy Doyle which was run by Metro Eireann newspaper.

Flirting with Fire ((Blue Collar Brothers #1) Review Tour! This is a MUST READ!

Everyone knows that if you play with fire you’ll end up getting burned…

What happens when you attend a first responder’s bachelor auction with your best friends? Well, if your name is Madison Kelly like me, your friends end up bidding on a date for you with your high school crush.

That’s right. Even back when I was ‘Fatty Maddie’ to all my classmates, I had eyes for the quarterback of our football team. Not like I was the only one.

Mauro Bianco may fight fires for a living, but he still sets my heart ablaze. One look at the rugged, muscular man he’s turned into and I want to slide down his pole.

One date. That’s all I’m committed to. A few hours and I can tuck him back into that tattered old shoebox in my closet.

As always, the universe has other plans. I never would’ve predicted that in a matter of days he’d turn from my dream guy into my enemy.

Christie’s Review

5 ++++ STARS

Flirting with Fire by Piper Rayne was a book that grabbed me from the beginning with the special note from our favorite fireman, Mauro. I knew then he would own my heart. It didn’t take long for Madison to own my heart too! These two definitely belonged together even if it took them years to accomplish it, and I loved watching these two fall hard for one another.

This is one of my top ten reads of 2018 for romcoms and an all-time favorite! Madison was so incredibly easy to relate to. I have read so many books about the smart girl in high school who was in love with the jock, only for him not to notice her. She grows up and becomes a success and wants vengeance on her crush. However, that isn’t how this book goes at all as you will soon discover.

The chemistry between these two is evident, but their first date doesn’t go as planned. This is the point where Madison gained my respect and admiration. She is nothing like Mauro expected, but he won’t discover that until a bit later. It won’t be long until she has him under her spell.

As I wrote earlier, Madison is a woman many of us girls can relate to. She wasn’t popular in school, and she carries some of those self-confidence issues into adulthood with her despite the incredible woman she has grown into. Luckily, Mauro does everything he can to assure her of her beauty both inside and out.

Speaking of Mauro, he is pretty much perfect. He is an adonis, but it’s his heart that is his greatest asset. Madison describes perfectly who he is:

No one would blame me if I passed out right now because he really is the perfect specimen of a man, right down to his heart of gold.

As much as I loved the characters, I loved the storyline as well. The pacing was perfect, never rushed. The development of their romance was slow, with little sexual innuendos thrown in building the tension until that final moment when they couldn’t resist each other anymore. It really was the perfect combination of sexy and sweet.

Underneath the romance was the theme of never judging someone too harshly before learning what is underneath the surface. Mauro never got to know who Madison was in high school and was sorry for that. Mauro is often underestimated. Because of his looks, people, especially women, consider him not too intelligent. Madison idolized him in high school, with much of that based on his looks. Now, she is getting to really know him and is falling for him because of the man he is, not who she thought he was. Most of the time we see that label attached to beautiful women, so it was an interesting twist seeing that label attached to a gorgeous man.

The icing on the cake was the addition of the secondary characters: Madison’s friends, Lauren and Vanessa, and Mauro’s brothers, Cristian and Luca. Each couple will get there own book, and it all centers around the bachelor’s auction just like it did with Madison and Mauro! The authors give us just enough about each of them to whet our appetite for more. I, for one, will anxiously awaiting the next book in the series!

Excerpt

My brothers widen their stances, share a look of amusement and cock their eyebrows at me.

“Hate to break it to you, but Maddie didn’t bid on you. Lauren did.” Luca laughs while Cristian chuckles.

“I’m going out with a Madison and she didn’t go to our high school. Which reminds me.” I pull out my phone.

“Maddie is Madison, you idiot,” Luca says. “Her and Lauren were my year.”

“I went to high school with Madison?” I try to let her face come back to me, and though I can picture her bright blue eyes and long chestnut hair, nothing about her is familiar from high school.

“Yes, but she definitely wasn’t hanging out at the bonfires and football pep rallies.” Luca grabs his helmet off his bike. The only responsible thing I’ve seen him do in the last few years.

“Well, shit and she doesn’t even want to go out with me? Her friend bid on me?”

Luca straddles his bike with a grin. I look over to Cristian, but he’s putting his shirt back on and starts fiddling with his earbuds. They obviously think this conversation is over.

“Yeah, but we’re all in the same boat.” Cristian’s thumb moves over his phone screen. “Maddie’s awesome and I think you’ll have a good time with her.”

“She seemed pretty quiet and way too accommodating,” I say.

Luca kicks his stand up, letting the bike rock a little under him.

Cristian’s hands freeze on the screen of his phone. “And that’s bad?” he asks.

“I want a woman who knows what she wants. Has her own damn opinions. Doesn’t just agree with everything I say.”

Cristian peeks over his shoulder, a look of amusement that matches Luca’s. “You want a girl to come up and grab your nuts?”

“I want a girl who knows what her favorite food is, has an opinion about where she wants to go for dinner, likes whatever sports team she likes and doesn’t default to my favorites.” I stuff my hands into my pockets, digging out my keys for my truck.

“Well then, Maddie might not be the one. Like I said, she’s nice.” Cristian slaps me on the shoulder. “Treat her good though, okay?” He inserts one earbud.

“What do you think I’m going to do, leave her in Garfield Park?”

He puts his other earbud in. “That’s not even funny man. I have a friend in that district and the shit that goes down there…” He shakes his head.

Cristian loses the entire point of my statement—the fact I’m not a jackass. I’m not Luca.

“It’s one date,” I say. “And who knows, maybe she’s nice but still has a wild streak.”

Christian again glances over to Luca who’s smiling like he’s fucking Mickey Mouse.

“Well, good luck on your date,” he says.

Cristian jogs away and Luca’s bike starts up.

I head to my truck.

The conversation is over, but I’m curious now.

Where’s my damn yearbook?

Sleeping Through War

Sleeping Through War

by Jackie Carreira

Synopsis

It is May 1968. Students are rioting, civil rights are being fought and died for, nuclear bombs are being tested, and war is raging in Vietnam. For three ordinary women in Lisbon, London and Washington life must go on as usual. For them, just to survive is an act of courage. How much has really changed in 50 years?

Christie’s Review

 4.5 STARS

Sleeping Through War is one of those books that I can’t just run to my computer and write a review for. It’s a book I have to ponder because it’s very thought provoking, and it’s really makes you think.

It’s set in May of 1968. It’s a very volatile time around the world, and the author includes chapters of real-life events that are happening in the world while the story revolves around three very different women. Each woman deals with social issues at the time: women’s issues, racial issues, and the war in Vietnam.

Readers first meet Amalia who lives in Portugal. She is a widow as well as a single mother, and sewing doesn’t pay the bills. She had to make choices that sadly many women have had to make throughout history to provide a better home for her child. She epitomizes what true love is for a child…giving up parts of herself to provide him with a safe environment. Many would view her as weak, but I didn’t. She was a strong woman who was doing the best she could do with the choices she was given.

Rose lives in London. She moved from St. Lucia to be a nurse in a nursing home, caring for older, white patients. She is faced with prejudice every day based on her skin color. She always manages to rise above it, showing kindness to those around her. Some others in her situation may not have the patience or kindness in their hearts like she did. Again, some would see that as a weakness. Like with Amalia, I saw it as strength. Instead of bitterness, she chose to find her own happiness, not dependent on others.

Mrs. Johnson is a mother who has a son serving in Vietnam. Unlike with Amalie and Rose, much of what we learn of her life is in the form of letters written to her son. She tells him about life at home, but she also voices her uncertainty of why her son and so many other young men were in that war. She was married, but she showed a strength her husband didn’t have.

The book was emotional, and at times, it was very sad. I thought it was well-written and written with a lot of detail. I felt like I was in Portugal with Amalie, in London with Rose in her small apartment, and with Mrs. Johnson in Washington. Each woman was from a very different background, yet they each illustrated a strength in situations they found themselves in and the way each of them chose to face them.

Timid (Lark Cove Series) by Devney Perry Review Tour

Willa Doon has always been shy. Her quiet demeanor was something she’s always embraced. That is, until Jackson Page moves to town. The one man she desperately wants to take notice struggles to remember her name.

Year after year, Willa stands by, watching as the bartender slash playboy drowns his demons in beer and sex. Then one night, he shows up at her door, suddenly aware that the girl he’s seen around Lark Cove is now a beautiful woman.

Except what he doesn’t remember is that this visit isn’t his first. They spent a night together once before. A night he’s forgotten, thanks to a bottle of tequila.

A night that crushed a timid girl’s heart, and set a broken man on the path to heal them both.

A Top Read of 2018

Timid is one of those books that just wraps you up and doesn’t let you go until the end, and then it doesn’t really let you go then. But, seriously…all of Devney Perry’s books do that to me!!!!

This is Willa and Jackson’s story, and what a story it is! The romance begins with Willa many years before it does for Jackson! She fell for him the instant she saw him as a teenager when he first arrived in town. Since then, she has tried to get him to notice her to no avail. Willa, being who she is, doesn’t do anything drastic in that department. She is very reserved and shy…hence the title of the book. By the end, she has grown into a more confident and self-assured woman, not a girl anymore.

Jackson has never really known a home until he came to Lark Cove. Hazel, Thea, and Charlie are his family. He is somewhat reserved himself but in a completely different way than Willa. He definitely gets attention with his good looks and his charm, but he doesn’t really allow others besides his inner circle get too close. He is completely clueless about Willa. The guy doesn’t even call her by the correct name. One night, all that changes, and he really “sees” Willa, and it’s over for him. He knows she is special, and he won’t give up until he has her. She will definitely make him work hard which I loved by the way.

As with all of Perry’s novels, it’s much more than a romance. There are twists and some angst, but they play into the plot of the book and really make the characters grow into the people I think they were created to be. She always draws me into her books and her characters. They aren’t just fictional characters; she brings them to life.. She knows how to pull at my heartstrings and can make me shed a tear of two, but it’s that emotional connection that brings me back to her time and time again!!!!

I scooched my chair in toward the table, trying to put a little more space between Jackson and me, but he wasn’t having it.

He put both hands on the back of my chair, then leaned in close. “Hi, Willa.”

“Uh . . . hi.” I shivered at the heat from his chest on my bare shoulders.

Why was he standing so close? My parents were right there. Our table was one of four tall, square ones in the center of the room and there was plenty of space between tables.

Plenty. P-L-E-N-T-Y.

But was Jackson using any of that plentiful space?

No sirree. He stayed pressed against the back of my chair, like there were only three inches of usable space behind him, not three feet.

My skin prickled he was so close. I tried to nudge my chair forward again but it barely moved. Sweat beaded on my temples and I pulled in a shaking breath.

Jackson’s woodsy, rich scent was everywhere. It overpowered the stale beer, pizza and peanuts, and I inhaled a deep breath, unable to resist.

Sexy Hot Forest. That’s what they’d call his cologne.

Redemption: Part 5 is the continuation of Adam and Isabella’s story. It picks up immediately after that cliffhanger Kate Benson left us with! Their lives are still in turmoil, and Adam is fighting hard to keep both Isabella and his company. As you can imagine, this one is an intriguing read with more twists.

The romance and steam continue, but as with all the books, their relationship is theme of the book. Isabella is still adjusting to Adam, and it’s sometimes a struggle for this independent woman to be in this type of relationship. It’s also sometimes a struggle for Adam to allow Isabella completely into his heart. But, both of them are doing their best. With each installment in this series, you can see their trust deepening and growing stronger. They will have to rely on that strength to get them through what is coming their way.

I have written in my reviews before how much I love reading a writer’s acknowledgments and notes. For me, it gives me a bit of an insight to the writer. Sometimes you find little gems in those sections. I found one in Benson’s dedication. I love it; my heart melted with this one, ”For my darling Mr. Benson. The world could shatter all around us and I would still belong to you alone.” No wonder she can write such a heartmelting romance!!!!

I don’t call Benson “the queen of cliffys” for nothing…she left us yet with another one. I don’t know how she does it! This next book will definitely be filled with some heart-stopping moments. She made it known that the threat to Adam and Isabella has taken quite a dangerous turn. So, I “arrivederci” to  one of my favorite couples until we meet the next time!!!!

Christie’s Review

4.5 STARS

A Wedding in Cornwall (Books 7-12) is a delightful and charming anthology. We catch up with all our favorite characters, even though we have to tell them good-bye at the end of Book 12.

So much happens within this anthology. It begins with Julianne returning from the Seattle and realizing time doesn’t stand still. There have been changes in her little village she calls home. Change seems to be the theme throughout this collection. The villagers see some strangers coming to town, a famous writer, a stranger who turns out to not  be who he said he was, and a visit from Julianne’s friend in America. Julieanne finds herself doing many more things than being an event planner. She becomes involved in a play, a quilting circle, and a talent show. She also helps her friend fight a scheming businessman. An old flame of Matthew’s returns at a time when Julianne and Matthew aren’t seeing eye to eye. As you can see, lots of things are happening….romance, big decisions, dreams, secrets, and a baby.

By the end of book 12, Briggs shows us life may be just as we want it when we are thrown a curveball, and we have to re-think what our priorities are. This is exactly what Julianne and Matthew have to do by the conclusion of the series. Hopefully, Briggs will treat us to a future book letting us see how our favorite characters are doing. I, for one, would love to return to this most special village.
