Christie’s Review

4.5 STARS

Rhoda Baxter gives her readers a deeper insight into the grieving process in this witty, heartfelt novella!

Harriet and Niamh are dealing with the loss of the man they loved, Richard. He was Harriet’s boyfriend and Niamh’s father. Harriet lives in a small village trying to survive day by day, but at night, drowning her sorrows with alcohol and men. Niamh has no one to turn to because her mother, Mel, detested her father, and she will hardly even let her daughter utter her ex’s name. One weekend, these two will meet, and everything will change for them.

Mel takes off when her mother leaves for a retreat to see Harriet. In a panic, her Uncle Tim, Mel’s twin, follows her. He has every intention of bringing her straight back home and away from the woman who he thinks destroyed his sister’s life. However, people aren’t always who they seem to be, especially when you don’t really know them. Tim finds this out quickly when he meets Harriet. She isn’t the horrible woman his sister made her out to be. She is a woman who has lost the love of her life and is hurting as much as his niece is.

This is a shorter read, but Baxter left nothing out at all. She shows her readers that not everyone grieves in the same way. Harriet has lived in the dark despair of it for almost a year, but Niamh shifts something inside of her. She realizes she wants to live again. Harriet helps Niamh understand her mother a bit better. And maybe, just maybe she can find love again with Tim, which was something neither of them were expecting.

While this is a bit of a romance, it really does sit on the back burner as it mostly a story of healing and second chances. I would love to revisit these characters in the future as I think they still have some of their stories left to tell.
