Homicide in Herne Hill (The London Murder Mysteries #4)

by Alice Castle

Synopsis

Beth Haldane, SE21’s premier – and only – single mum amateur sleuth, is really pleased to find a new friend at the school gates, in the shape of irrepressibly bouncy Nina. As well as a way with words, Nina has a puzzle she wants Beth to solve, centred on the solicitor’s office where Nina works in Herne Hill.

But as the mystery thickens, threatening to drag in not just Nina and her boss, but the yummy mummies of Dulwich, too, Beth is about to find out just how far some people will go to keep up appearances.

Join Beth in this fourth instalment in the London Murder Mystery series for her toughest case yet.

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

The London Murder Series by Alice Castle is quickly becoming one of my favorite series in the genre!

Beth has had a hard time recently with the events that took place in book 3, no spoilers here!!! That changes when she meets Nina, who sits next to her at a school function. She notices right away that she isn’t part of the “yummy mummy” group. She discovers that she has never enjoyed a Nativity as much as she has this one, with Nina giving her plenty of laughs. Beth thinks she could really be friends with Nina.

Beth can’t resist a good conundrum, so she listens to Nina’s concern about her job in the solicitor’s office. She can’t really put her finger on it, but something seems off in the office. Little does either woman realize how very “off” the business really is. Beth finds herself right in the middle of another mystery, and is there any connection with the recent spell of pet’s dying from poisoning. This may turn out to be the most dangerous and twisted mystery Beth has yet faced!

I loved the mystery, and I loved catching up with Beth and some of my other favorite characters. Castle does give us a bit more of Beth’s romance. Just like the other secondary characters, I’m coming to love Nina. She is just as fun and quirky as the others!!!!

Castle has mastered the art of writing a clever, witty mystery. She knows how to keep the storyline moving with great surprises, and she also fills the pages with great satire that brings plenty of laughs. Each book she writes gets even better!!!!

As the new music box store owner and resident of Keepsake Cove, a quaint town full of collectible shops on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Callie Reed is eager to get more involved in her community. She volunteers to plan the Fall street decorations and welcome a visiting author who’s come for a special book signing. But the celebratory mood is cut short when the local B&B owner is found dead, killed by a pair of vintage scissors.

Suspicion is cast on the victim’s estranged wife, Dorothy, who owns Keepsake Cove’s vintage sewing shop. Callie is sure Dorothy is innocent, and the visiting author agrees. Together, they begin their own investigation, only to discover that many people in Keepsake Cove have secrets. Secrets that are worth killing to keep quiet.

Character Post

Hi, guys. Nice to meet you! I’m Lyssa Hammond, and I came to Keepsake Cove for the first time when they invited me to come for a book signing event around Halloween. I’m a suspense/paranormal author, in case you didn’t know. The invitation came at a perfect time, since workers were banging away at my house in D.C. and I really needed to get away. So I booked a room at a nearby B&B and settled in a couple of days before the event with my laptop, expecting to have peace and quiet to write.

Hah! Little did I know the creepy guy who owned the B&B would be murdered, and I’d be involved in the investigation! Not as a suspect, mind you. But to help prove that the sweet lady who had the bad luck to have married this creep but the good sense to eventually leave him was innocent. She came under suspicion just because she happened to own a vintage sewing shop, and her ex was murdered with a pair of super-sharp antique scissors. Oh, and she’d inherit his stuff because they hadn’t legally divorced, and the only alibi she had was she was sleeping—alone, of course.

Lucky for her that Callie Reed, who owns the music box shop, was totally on her side and had a little experience with solving murders. Well, one. And I’ve written about lots of murders, which counts for something, right? So Callie and I got busy. But I quickly found out that it wasn’t as easy as writing a book. And it could get downright dangerous!

The upside is that I got to know a lot about a lot of people, and a few of them just might show up in my future books—with identifying details gone, of course. And I got to be good friends with Callie, and with her boyfriend, Brian. I won’t write them into my books, but I intend to keep in close touch after this murder stuff is done with. Assuming, that is, we all get out of this unscathed.

After that last incident, though, I’m beginning to wonder…

Murder. Betrayal. Love Gone Wrong

With her ability to present clues without giving away the endings and offering surprising twists encouraging the reader to the next page, D. J. Adamson delves into a family tragedy ending up in murder and a teenage daughter missing. When Lillian Dove finds herself involved in the police investigation, she realizes the daughter holds the key to unravel who killed her mother.

It is three days before Christmas when Lillian Dove comes across Dr. Conrad standing out in front of his house, covered in blood. When going inside the house to help other members of his family, she finds his wife killed, his son seriously injured, and his teenage daughter, Peyton Clayton, missing. Even more shocking, the police suspect Dr. Conrad. Understanding how emotional dilemmas have strained the family emboldens Lillian to help Detective Jacque Leveque, Major Crimes Detective for the Frytown Police Department, find the prime witness to the Conrad truths.

Let Her Go is a nerve-wracking exploration into a family lost, and the extent love elicits both the good and the bad. In this Third Step in Personal Recovery Lillian works to find Peyton Clayton, while battling the worse arctic freeze in Frytown’s history, untangling human frailties, and confronting the ghosts of Christmas.

If Nothing Else…There’s Always the Weather.

My Iowa family always says, “When there is nothing else to talk about, there’s always the weather.”

Not so much for me. I live in California. But in the Lillian Dove series, set in Frytown, Iowa, I use weather for a great many metaphors:  struggle, change, awakening, rebirth, letting go.

“I looked again at the magical view outside. Pure, white, slick, and as glassy as a photograph. Hiding all the mud and muck beneath that would eventually show itself once the weather warmed.”

There is always the weather to talk about…or there is always life to take on. And Lillian takes on life as she would a hard day outside:  one day at a time, one clue after another, until she comes back into where it is warm and dry. Let Her Go offers a happy ending of sorts. Lillian ends up where it is safe and warm…but as in life…she realizes the next day can bring on a blizzard.
