The Other Miss Bates (The second book in the Highbury Trilogy, inspired by Jane Austen’s ‘Emma’) by Allie Cresswell Blog Tour with Review

The Other Miss Bates

The Other Miss Bates

by Allie Cresswell

Synopsis:

Jane Bates has left Highbury to become the companion of the invalid widow Mrs Sealy in Brighton. Life in the new, fashionable seaside resort is exciting indeed. A wide circle of interesting acquaintance and a rich tapestry of new experiences – balls at the Assembly rooms, carriage rides and promenades on the Steyne – make her new life all Jane had hoped for.

While Jane’s sister Hetty can be a tiresome conversationalist she proves to be a surprisingly good correspondent and Jane is kept minutely up-to-date with developments in Highbury, particularly the tragic news from Donwell Abbey.

When handsome Lieutenant Weston returns to Brighton Jane expects their attachment to pick up where it left off in Highbury the previous Christmas, but the determined Miss Louisa Churchill, newly arrived with her brother and sister-in-law from Enscombe in Yorkshire, seems to have a different plan in mind.

The Other Miss Bates is the second book in the Highbury Trilogy. It is just as delightful and charming as the first book. In this book, Jane is now in Brighton as a companion to Mrs. Sealy. Some new characters enter the fray, but we still get to catch up with old ones.

I love the way the book is written, and as with the first book, some of my favorite portions are the letters Jane writes home. Cresswell gives readers a deeper insight into Jane, such as her dreams and desires. I have so enjoyed watching her mature and change. The other characters that are introduced are also well-developed as well.

I’m a huge fan of Jane Austen, and I have been since reading her for the very first time in high school. I like to get my hands on anything that has to do with her as she is still one of my very favorite writers. For my fellow Austen lovers, Cresswell doesn’t change the plot of Emma, yet this book, like the first one, is unique and original. She gives us a minor character, Jane Bates, in Emma, and gives her a book and voice of her own. I think this idea is brilliant as well as Cresswell’s writing. If you are a fan of Austen like me, you really need to read this series. I have adored both books in the series, and I’m looking forward to the next one. She did a fabulous job of setting readers up for the third book in the epilogue!

As an ex-star of a hit teen detective show, Maizie Albright gets the youth demographic. Or so she thought. Now that she’s adulting, today’s kids make Maizie feel out of date. At least the youth she meets while doing community service at Black Pine’s exclusive healing resort, the Wellspring Center. When these teens aren’t vlogging their attempts to track down Big Foot, they’re trying to prove the Center is up to no good. Starting with the disappearance and possible murder of their not-as-young commander. A murder the police find as likely as Big Foot.

Maizie has her own suspicions about the new celebrity retreat. Particularly when she learns her ex-fiancé has been hired to run the Center. Kind of an issue when she thought Oliver was in prison. Kind of an issue when Nash, the man of her dreams, is out of commission.

Wait, not man of her dreams.
Boss of her fantasies. Professionally speaking, of course.

While Maizie’s helping adolescent Youtubers detect a disappearance, she’s wrangling her mother’s wedding, assuaging an overzealous probation officer, and struggling to keep Nash Security Solutions solvent. Conspiracy theories collide with real-life catastrophes beginning with murder and possibly ending with Maizie’s life.

Another delightful read full of all the things I love about Larissa Reinhart….mystery, sassiness, a bit of spice thrown in, with a lot of laughs.

This is the third book in the series, and it’s just as good as the previous books. Maizie finds herself in more trouble than before. She is in hot water with her probation officer…now she is mixed up in a bank robbery, with her boss and man she is falling for in the hospital, and now she is helping three teenagers try to find a missing Youtube star…oh there might be a Bigfoot sighting or two as well.  However, it’s pretty convenient that the disappearance is connected to the new place she is supposed to be doing her community service. What could possibly go wrong, right?

As usual, I was hooked from the very first page of the book! Maizie is sometimes a walking trainwreck, but that is the reason I adore her! She is hilarious, and now teamed up with teenagers, she is even funnier! In this book, she will find herself confronting her past with her ex-fiance. Alas, no one can do that better than Maizie.

The storyline and plot were great with lots of twists to keep me guessing. Reinhart knows how to throw in just the right amount of romance. Maybe…just maybe….we will see where her relationship with Nash is going to go. You will have to read for yourself to find out!!!!

I have been a fan of Reinhart’s for several years! If you are looking for a series that moves quickly with just the right combination of sass, romance, and mystery, you really can’t go wrong with this one!!!!

Jock Rule by Sara Ney (JOCK HARD #2) by Sara Ney Review Tour

Kip Carmichael is no pretty boy.

He’s a rough. Dirty. Giant. Hair so unruly, and a beard so thick, his friends on the team call him Sasquatch.

The first time Sasquatch lays eyes on Theodora “Teddy” Johnson across the keg at a party one night on Jock Row, she’d been relegated to the sidelines by her jock hungry “friends.”

Week-after-week, he watches beautiful but bashful Teddy getting overshadowed, and overlooked. Sasquatch finally broad shoulders his way through the crowd, offering to to be her hairy godmother. But the minute their eyes meet? He’s a goner.

Teaching her the RULES for winning a jock will be the easy part. Not falling in love with her is going to be a losing game.

A Top Read in Romantic Comedy

Sara Ney has given her readers another sweet, sexy, and funny romance!!!!

Kip and Teddy couldn’t be more opposite from one another. He tends to stand out in a crowd. He is well over 6 feet tall and his beard makes him look like Sasquatch. Teddy is a sweet girl, and she tends to not stand out like her friends whose mission in life is to snag a jock. As soon as Kip sees her, he knows she is something special and doesn’t belong at these “jock” parties. After weeks of watching her, he approaches, and he is quite surprised she isn’t intimidated by him or his size. The two strike up an unlikely friendship with him offering to be her “hairy godmother” and help her feel comfortable in her own skin. Neither one ever realize how complicated this friendship is about to become…..

Ney has a way of pulling me in heart and soul into her books. This one is no different. I was completely immersed in Kip and Teddy’s story. They were both characters that were unique and very likeable. Kip is somewhat like the beast in Beauty and the Beast. Although, he isn’t unattractive like the beast. However, it’s his demeanor that scares people off. He doesn’t have any friends except for his sister and now, Teddy. I could understand why he shunned people, and I was so glad that he knew pretty much from the beginning that Teddy was worthy of his trust.

Of course, Teddy is somewhat like Beauty even though people overlook her beauty, except Kip. He has an uncanny ability to see through people’s pretensions and see them for who they are. He instantly knows Teddy is a good person. She might seem a bit shy, but she doesn’t have a problem not letting Kip get away with his “stuff.” She is independent, smart, and she sees past all of Kip’s defensiveness, wearing down his resistance day by day, even if she doesn’t realize it.

One of my favorite things in the book was the banter between these two. They are pretty funny together, and once the sexual tension is introduced….whoa the butterflies. Ney really knows how to use that to her advantage, and she is an expert at it. She seems to know exactly when her characters need to finally give in. That is just one of her many talents as a writer!

I have only discovered Sara Ney this year, and my only disappointment is I hadn’t discovered her sooner. Not only do I love the stories she spins and the unforgettable characters, but I really like her style of writing. She never overuses angst. In the books I have read, there really isn’t a lot of that. They are about finding your soulmate and falling in love! If you haven’t read anything by her, I highly recommend you try one of her books. If you are like me, you will find her becoming one of your very favorite authors!!!!

ENGAGED TO THE EMT (Blue Collar Brothers Book 3) by Piper Rayne Review Tour with Excerpt

A Sexy FAKE RELATIONSHIP rom com standalone written by a duo of two USA Bestselling Authors

Luca Bianco is a jerk. There I said it.

He thinks he’s so suave and sexy, walking around in his paramedic uniform stretched out by all his hard muscles and saving lives every day. I swear he thinks every woman in the world would kill for a chance to be with him.

Men like Luca are good for one thing only—a one-night stand—not commitment. I don’t care if my friend did pay good money at a charity bachelor auction for me to go on a date with him, I refuse to do it.

That is until Luca offers me a deal I can’t refuse, and I agree to be his pretend fiancé.

The heat that’s simmered between us for a decade ignites and I’m not sure even Luca will be able to kickstart my heart after I call code blue.

What’s that saying? Love is blind?

Not true. I can see this head-on collision coming a mile away.

All-Time Favorite Read/Series

Top Read in Romantic Comedy/Enemies to Lovers of 2018

“We met at the corner of love and hate. Luckily our paths crossed there again, but the second time we took the right path…love.”

Engaged to the EMT is probably one of the best enemies to lovers romance I have ever read, so needless to say, it’s a top pick for romantic comedy for 2018! In fact, the entire series is a top favorite of the year as well.

We have gotten the other Bianco brothers’ stories, so now we finally get Luca’s. I knew it would be special, and it far exceeded my expectations. Luca and Lauren don’t like each other, that isn’t a secret. When Luca asks Lauren to be his fake fiancee, no one is more surprised that she is when she actually agrees to do it.  She admits he is a jerk, but it’s an offer she really can’t refuse. All of us who have gotten to know these two in the earlier books knows this is the worst thing that could happen or it could turn out to be the thing that forces them to really take a good hard look at why they feel the way they do about one another. They might just be surprised at what they discover.

As with the earlier books, I fell hook, line, and sinker for this couple. It’s all in the way Piper Rayne wrote the book. It’s from each one of their POV’s, and it’s written as if they are talking to the readers as if we are their confidantes.

As I have written earlier, it’s no secret these two barely tolerate each other. It’s been that way since high school. As they are thrown together in this charade, they actually get to know one another as adults, and they are surprised by what they discover about one another. Luca is definitely good-looking; Lauren can admit that. She begins seeing how big his heart is underneath that sexy, arrogant facade he shows the world. He is learning to respect Lauren for her strength and independence. They also admire that competitive spirit each of them has. Boy, are they competitive! It’s Lauren’s competitive spirit that makes Lauren a female lead who really stands out!

I have read each book in the series, and I have loved each one. Piper Rayne does a phenomenal job of making each story different. They do the same with each character. I have loved each one for very different reasons. Even if they are brothers, each one is very different and their own man. The same goes for the women who fall in love with them. What is the same is the humor, sexual chemistry, and romance that will melt your heart! It’s those very things that bring me back to this dynamic duo again and again!

I was very sorry to say goodbye to the Bianco clan. I loved catching up with them in each and every book. The writers do such a great job of including earlier characters in the later books. For me, that builds my bond with the story and characters. I’m so glad we will get to see more of them when we get a series about the Bianco’s cousins, The Mancini’s. I will definitely be looking forward to that one!!!!

EXCERPT

The light from the street reflects the humor shining in his eyes. “I’m just sick of the fighting.”

“Fighting is what we do best. It’s basically how we communicate.” Then all the puzzle pieces join together in my head. I’m so stupid. “You want something.”

We pull up in front of my house just as I realize what a fucking moron I am.

“Nope.” He takes the keys, grabs the bag of food and gets out of the car.

He’s totally playing me. I might not be a psychologist who can quickly spot a liar, but Luca, I know too well. Not well, but when it comes to our interactions—I know him. And this nice Luca, taking me to a Hawks game, buying me dinner, wanting to eat with me…this isn’t the Luca Bianco I know.

I climb out of his car, the slam of the door echoing down the dark residential street. “Tell me what it is you want.”

His lips remain straight, not even a hint of a smile or smirk.

Another clear sign that this isn’t the Luca I know.

“Come on. Let’s eat.” He nods in the direction of my house.

“By prolonging whatever it is, you’re just pissing me off, which means if you need something, I’m more than likely going to say no. Or we could play a little game…”

“How about we eat?” He waits patiently as I insert the key into my door, disengage the alarm that Cristian, Luca’s brother insisted we get installed.

Police officers. Jeez.

We step inside and he’s the one to shut the door and flick the lock.

“Planning to have your way with me?” I’m not serious as I walk into the kitchen to grab us some drinks, utensils, and napkins.

The sound of the television blaring drifts into the kitchen seconds later.

With my hands full, I head back into the living room. “Feel free to make yourself at home,” I deadpan, handing Luca a Vitamin Water and a napkin.

“Thanks.” He lifts the napkin and drink. “And thanks.”

We sit on the couch because although our house is nice and newly redecorated thanks to Maddie’s mad skills, the family room area is small and the best place to see the television is the couch. No worries though, there’s still a cushion between us.

I open up my box of food, a little bit of steam hitting my face. “I can’t just sit here and watch soccer with you and not know what you want.”

I hate that I’ve had to resort to being sincere in my request.

He opens up his own box and I’m a tad jealous I didn’t get the burger. It smells and looks delicious.

Luca doesn’t respond, just stands and heads into the kitchen.

He knows our house way too well thanks to his brothers always suggesting we meet here when we go out.

I pop a cauliflower floret into my mouth, tasting the Korean flavor makes my mouth water. Opening up my Vitamin Water to cool my tongue, I ignore Luca’s return, instead, fixating on the television as he rounds the coffee table in front of me. The couch dips with the weight of his body which is now closer than before.

I’ve never been alone with Luca, much less this close. I feel a shift in our volatile relationship like the stillness before a storm. It’s too quiet. It’s too calm. Too…enjoyable.

“Here.” My gaze shifts from the television, although I couldn’t tell you the score of the game and I see he’s holding half his burger out to me.

“What’s this?” I ask, loading my mouth with another califloret.

Man, it’s hot.

“I think you had a little bit of drool dripping from your mouth when I opened the container. How about we share?”

He smiles. A smile I’ve only ever seen on his face with his friends, or his brothers, and especially his mom. He doesn’t even wear this smile when he’s with girls. At least not that I’ve ever seen. That fact runs around my stomach stirring up the butterflies to max flight.

I don’t like this.

It’s too damn calm.

Where are the eighty mile per hour winds?

“Luca, if you don’t tell me what you want, I’m going to kick you out of my house.” I take half the burger and slide my cauliflower and fries closer to him as an offering.

“You can’t just wait?” he asks, seeming disappointed.

“HA!” I point to him with a greasy finger. “You do want something from me. Tell me what it is.”

“You’re ridiculous you know that, right? A normal person would wait.”

I shake my head. “No, they wouldn’t.”

See, this feels good. This feels right.

“LUCA!” I scream.

He blows out a breath. “Fine. I need a favor from you.”

Across the Horizon by Aly Martinez Release Blitz with Review

“Sometimes love happens when you least expect it.” That was what my husband’s mistress told me the day I found out about their affair.

I didn’t believe it until five minutes later when mouth-watering celebrity chef Tanner Reese walked up, tossed his arm around my shoulders, and told my cheating husband to take a hike.

Tanner and I couldn’t have been more different. He spent his weekends at clubs, rubbing elbows with fellow A-listers. I spent mine in yoga pants with cheese boards and a glass of wine—or six.

Our relationship shouldn’t have worked, but it did. That is until Tanner proved to me that even though love happens when you least expect it…

So does heartbreak.

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

Another phenomenal read from Aly Martinez!!!!

I was excited when I saw this one was releasing because it’s a spinoff of The Darkest Sunrise Duet which was one heck of a read, by the way. Never fear….it can be read as a complete standalone, ruining nothing for you if you haven’t read the duet.

Tanner has the hottest cooking show on The Food Channel. He had adoring fans, mostly women, as he usually tears his shirt of in the middle of his show, and he was also name People Magazine’s sexiest chef. However, he has had to swear women off that is…until Rita.

Rita was one of those women I just love! She was devastated by her husband’s affair, yet she dug deep and came up swinging. I love a woman like that! She, like Tanner, has sworn off relationships, but when she roped Tanner into making her husband jealous, she had no idea what she had done. Tanner was going to change her life whether she wanted him to or not!

Not only was this a book about finding love again…a lasting love with someone who respects you, but it was about a woman finding a way back to herself and loving herself again. She did everything to please her ex, yet he didn’t appreciate her. With Tanner, he loved her for who she was…Rita. Tanner has a story to tell as well. He is used to being a celebrity, but he comes to finally find a woman who loves him for who he is as a man, not a celebrity chef. As you can imagine, there is baggage the two will have to overcome, but I promise you that you will love watching this couple fall for each other. There are some really funny parts to the book, but Martinez never shortchanges her readers when it comes to emotions!!!! This one is packed full of emotional moments!

Martinez often creates secondary characters that really add something extra to the story, and this one is no different. I have to say that I am in LOVE with Tanner’s mother. Everyone needs a mother and needs to be a mother like her. I adored the relationship she had with Tanner and his brother!!!! She added some real comedy to the book! As I got to know Tanner better, I could see he got his sense of humor from her!!!!!

Oftentimes, my favorite part of a book is the epilogue because they are somewhat of a closure for me. I get to see how the characters I’ve come to love are doing before I finish the very last words. I just adored this one! Not only did I get to see how Tanner and Rita were, but Martinez filled it full of emotions that made me love them even more!!! So, now I will have to wait patiently until Martinez brings us her next book!!!!

Excerpt

I shifted the phone to my other ear and asked her, “Did you just get in bed?”

“If, by bed, you mean carrying a glass of wine out back to swing in the hammock, maybe.”

I bit my bottom lip, my head falling back against the headrest. For most men, this would have been an innocuous statement. But for a hammock connoisseur like myself, this was the normal guy equivalent of her saying that she liked to give blowjobs during halftime.

“You have a hammock out back?”

There was a delay in her response, which was followed by a subtle kiss of her lips on what I assumed was a wine glass. “Don’t knock it until you try it. It’s one of the most underrated luxuries in outdoor furniture.”

“Oh, I’m not knocking anything. Rope or quilted?”

“Mayan, actually.”

“Oh, sweet heavenly baby Jesus, she’s beautiful and knows her hammocks. I’ve never been so turned on in my life.”

She giggled, pausing for another sip. “You know, if you leaked this hammock fetish to the press, you could probably increase demand by five million percent and singlehandedly lower the country’s unemployment rate.”

Okay, so at some point during the day, she’d figured out who I was.

But! Even with this knowledge, she was trying to avoid a date with me and was not elbow-deep in planning our televised wedding. This was a definite plus in my book.

“Yeah, but then, when I talked to beautiful women like yourself, I’d have no idea if the hammock was your idea or a ploy to impress me.”

“Jeez, that’s sad, Tanner,” she said, her sweet Southern accent like a wave rolling over my name.

I’d meant it as a joke, but it was the absolute truth when it came to dating. Early on in my career, I’d done a rapid-fire interview about my personal life. One of the questions had been: What would your ideal woman order on the first date? Truth be told, the only thing I hoped my ideal woman would order was something she wanted. I didn’t factor into that. But I’d been on my last question in my last interview of the last day of a month-long press tour. My face had hurt from fake smiling, I’d been in desperate need of a shower, a smoke, and sleep, and my mind had been mush, so I’d prattled off the first thing that had come to mind: shrimp and grits.

That one little answer somehow made it onto my Wiki page, and after that, every woman I’d taken out ordered shrimp and grits. One of them even had a shellfish allergy and nearly ended up in the hospital. And this insanity was not limited to women outside of the spotlight.

I’d once gone on a date with America’s princess of pop, Levee Williams. We’d hit it off at a charity event. For one of the most famous women in the world, she was a surprisingly nice girl, gorgeous, and funny as all get out. But the first time I took her out? One guess what she ordered.

I was at the end of my rope with dating and lost my freaking mind before storming out like an asshole. That night, as I was reporting shrimp and fucking grits as an error to Wiki, I noticed that her page listed it as her favorite food. I’d never had the balls to contact her again, and I once hid behind a palm tree on Rodeo Drive when I heard the clamoring of paparazzi calling her name. But that’s neither here nor there.

In short, while finding a woman was all too easy, dating was hard.

But that wasn’t about to stop me from trying with Rita.

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.

Him With the Beard is a sweet read, perfect for putting you in the mood for the holiday season!!!!

As the synopsis asks, “Do you remember that moment you stopped believing in Santa Claus?” That is the pivotal question that is the backbone of this short story. Stella’s daughter, Millie, no longer believes, and it just breaks Stella’s heart. She is determined to prove Millie wrong. What occurs will turn their family upside down….a secret is unearthed, and Stella’s world is rocked. What she does from there is the important question.

The book is very short, but that doesn’t affect the story told. It is sweet, poignant, and it will warm your heart. The characters are really developed, especially considering the length of the book. Pedersen really shows her readers the meaning of Christmas, and she also shows us it doesn’t really matter if there is proof of his existence, but what he means to us…love, hope, and the belief in miracles. Isn’t that what Christmas is really all about?

Author Bio

Pernille Meldgaard Pedersen

Pernille was born in 1988 and loves that she was born in the decade with the tallest hair, the most colourful clothes, and the best music.

Her imagination never stands still, and it’s often expressed in words and pictures.
She wrote her first story when she was six years old. It was about the cat she unfortunately never got but wished for more than anything.

She loves autumn and Christmas and believes in elves.

From day to day she is a knight in training, an animator, and a secret agent – she has saved the world a few times by now.

She’s also a professional daydreamer.

She thinks the recipe for a good book is the same as the one for having a good life – a sense of kinship, humour, love, and that one thing that gives you a daily smile.
Vestercity is a fictional city based on her upbringing near the city of Herning in Denmark.
