Coming home to Merriment Bay Part 3

Coming Home to Merriment Bay: Part Three: Christmas

by Emily Harvale

About the Book:

Part Three of this heartwarming four-part serial about finding the strength to put the past behind you and to reach out for a future filled with happiness and love.

Cat and Kyra have finally traced the man in the photo they found in Viola’s trunk – thanks to Amias. But Bailey Mitchell lives thousands of miles away and is almost ninety-eight, so meeting him in person is never going to happen. Which is just as well. Exchanging Christmas cards and chatting on social media leads to revelations Cat had not expected.

At least Christmas is looking promising. It may be freezing outside but things have definitely thawed between Cat and her mum, Mary. They’re actually getting on, especially now that Mary is dating Jeremy Stone, the builder working on Viola’s house.

Cat’s also hopeful that Viola’s situation may improve. And when a surprise visitor brings more than just well wishes, Cat’s Christmas takes a delightful turn.

With the festivities in full swing, and snow falling on Merriment Bay, the future’s looking bright. Christmas is a time for miracles and Cat believes she may get one of her own this year if she’s prepared to put the past behind her and open her heart to Love once more.

Book three in the sweet serial by Emily Harvale is not short on surprises. Cat and Kyra now know where Bailey Mitchell lives. Cat had no way of knowing that sending a letter to him will change her life in ways she never saw coming.

Just when it looks like she and Amias may finally reveal their feelings for one another, a possible new love interest enters her life…Bailey Mitchell’s grandson, Ben. He, his sister, and Bailey make the journey to see Viola.

Secrets are revealed, and the story moves along pretty quickly. There were times I wanted to take my Kindle and throw it across the room because of Cat and Amias! I have never run across two more obstinate characters in my life. I literally wanted to lock them in a room until they put all their cards on the table. However, that is the mark of a great writer, one who elicits emotions from his or her readers.

As with each book, it does end with some answers but it leaves some questions too. Don’t stress out too much…book 4 is out, and I have also read that one. All of your questions will be answered. Emily Harvale never disappoints!!!

New Review: Trying to Score (Hot Jocks #3) by Kendall Ryan Audio/Kindle Version

Trying to Score (Hot Jocks 3)

by Kendall Ryan

Synopsis:

Teddy King excels at many things. Playing hockey. Check. Scoring on and off the ice. Check. Being stupidly attractive … Double check.

I knew him way back when. Before he was the guy everyone wanted a piece of, he was just a rebellious college co-ed and one of my more energetic study partners.

But secrets have a way of getting out, and a steamy encounter from our college days (that we probably shouldn’t have filmed) is about to cause a major scandal. Unless we can work together to stop it.

Teddy’s no stranger to hard work … but the thing he wants most?

Is me.

Note: This high-heat standalone is chock-full of scorching banter and steamy good times. He’s a testosterone-dripping hockey player who wants a second chance. She’s a tough as nails attorney intent on making partner. Loads of sexy banter! No cliffhanger. Enjoy!

Your favorite hot jocks are back with an all new stand-alone novel. If you like sexy, confident men who know how to handle a stick (on and off the ice), and smart women who are strong enough to keep all those big egos in check, this series is perfect for you!

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

Trying to Score is a great addition to the already amazing series!

This is a somewhat different review for me as I read the book and listened to it on Audible! I loved both editions!

I have always been curious about Teddy and Sara. They have had a sizzling chemistry that is always just beneath the surface. However, I had no clue that these two knew each other years before and that explosive chemistry they share is nothing new!

I have loved all the guys in the series, and I really like how Ryan always makes each one of them unique. I end up loving something different about each guy! I fell for Teddy’s sweetness. Yes, he is gorgeous, but it was his sweetness that totally stole my heart.

I loved Sara as well. On the surface, her sweetness doesn’t always shine through, but she has a wonderful heart. She is loyal to her friends and those that she loves. She is independent and fierce. I admired her determination and how hard she worked to achieve her goals.

I thoroughly relished the flashbacks of these two in college and seeing how much they have changed since those days. My heart just melted watching these two fall back in love.

I loved reading the book, but I loved the Audible edition even more. Jason Clarke and Savannah Peachwood really brought Teddy and Sara to life. They made a 6 hour drive fly by for me. They truly captured the essence of both characters.

I have long been a fan of Kendall Ryan. I fell in love with her style of writing and characters from the very first word I ever read from her. She taps into my emotions, yet gives me lots of laughs as well. She knows how to combine humor, romance, steam, and sweetness just perfectly!

Death Makes No Distinction

Death Makes No Distinction: A Dan Foster Mystery

by Lucienne Boyce

About the Book:

Two women at opposite ends of the social scale, both brutally murdered.

Principal Officer Dan Foster of the Bow Street Runners is surprised when his old rival John Townsend requests his help to investigate the murder of Louise Parmeter, a beautiful writer who once shared the bed of the Prince of Wales. Her jewellery is missing, savagely torn from her body. Her memoirs, which threaten to expose the indiscretions of the great and the good, are also missing.

Frustrated by the chief magistrate’s demand that he drop the investigation into the death of the unknown beggar woman, found savagely raped and beaten and left to die in the outhouse of a Holborn tavern, Dan is determined to get to the bottom of both murders. But as his enquiries take him into both the richest and the foulest places in London, and Townsend’s real reason for requesting his help gradually becomes clear, Dan is forced to face a shocking new reality when the people he loves are targeted by a shadowy and merciless adversary.

The investigation has suddenly got personal.

Death Makes No Distinction is a clever, well-written mystery!

The book begins with the murder of a young girl who was violently raped before she was killed. Dan Foster is determined to punish the perpetrator who ended her life…even if she was in the wrong part of town. As he is investigating this crime, he is summoned to investigate the murder of another woman who was of the opposite class…the rich class, who was once involved with King George.

Dan is extremely upset that he has been told to concentrate all his focus on wealthy Louise, not the young beggar woman. He is determined to solve both. If he doesn’t have enough on his plate already, a danger lurks even closer to his family than he possibly imagined.

Lucy Mathers goes back to work

Lucy Mathers Goes Back To Work

By Julie Butterfield

About the Book:

Lucy Mathers was once the golden girl of Simcock & Bright. Four years later, she’s a stay at home mum with two adorable children, has swapped her Louboutins for rabbit slippers and spends her day making crustless sandwiches and colour co-ordinated lunches instead of signing up high profile clients.

When her husband is suddenly made redundant, there is panic in the Mathers’ household. With a mortgage the size of the national debt and a credit card balance that’s in danger of toppling, Lucy reluctantly decides she must return to work. So she digs out her old power suits from the back of the wardrobe and leaves Will to become a house husband. But sitting in Lucy’s old office is Grant Cassidy, suave, handsome and ruthless and with no intention of letting Lucy walk back into the number one job.

At home, despite his breezy declaration that swapping boardroom battles for toddler groups would be a doddle, Will’s belief that parental issues could be solved with forward planning and a spread sheet soon falls by the wayside.

With both Will and Lucy struggling to adapt, could their previously happy marriage be developing some cracks?

Christie’s Review

4 .5 STARS

What a clever, humorous, and realistic look at balancing parenthood and career.

Lucy had quite the successful career at Simcock & Bright. She was on the rise, but then she decided to stay home with her children…that was 4 years ago. Now, she is returning to work after her husband, Will, is out of work. The roles have now switched as he has decided to stay home with the children until he finds a job. Then, Lucy will quit and return to being a stay-at-home mother. As we all know, some of our best laid plans don’t always work out like we think they will. Lucy and Will are about to find that out.

While this is Lucy’s journey, it is Will’s as well. Lucy has to adapt to being back at work, especially with her nemesis, Grant Cassidy. He is going to put up every obstacle he can to make work as difficult as possible.

Will is also learning that you don’t rule a household and handle toddlers they way you do people in a boardroom.

Each one of them will soon learn important lessons about their marriage, their family, and their careers. I really enjoyed Julie Butterfield’s style of writing. It’s clever and filled with a lot of wit and humor. She really captures the dilemma of balancing parenthood and having a career. I loved it. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.

About the Book

Ruth “Ruthless” Harper is on the verge of becoming managing partner at her all-male consulting firm and she won’t let anything stand in her way. That includes men, relationships, and that dreaded F word, FEELINGS—distractions she eliminated long ago.

After the worst day ever (a near-death experience and a public wedgie, for starters), Ruth realizes she doesn’t want to live and die alone. She puts together a business plan to find the perfect man and dives head first into the murky online dating pool. All she wants is a high-powered executive who understands how important her career is. If only it were that easy.

Problem is most men are intimidated by Ruth’s confidence and shocked by her bluntness. The exception being her landscape designer, Nick, whose cool demeanor and unsolicited dating advice are driving her nuts. He’s the antithesis of the business-oriented man Ruth envisions for herself, so why do all signs keep pointing back to him?

Christie’s Review

4.5 STARS

Ruth Harper seems to have it all…a great career and a beautiful home, yet she doesn’t spend her time nurturing her personal relationships, for example with her parents. Her only friend is her PA. She doesn’t do relationships or feelings….especially love. However, all that changes with one night on an airport runway, and she decides she wants more out of life, maybe even love.

She decides she will use the same methods to find love as she did to find success in the business world. Well, we all know how this is going to turn out. She just wants a man who understands her drive and ambition without feeling threatened. Is that too hard to ask? However, she keeps coming back to her sweet landscape designer, Nick, whom proved what a gentleman he was during her spinning class.

I have read several books by this author, and I have enjoyed each one. This one is my favorite one by far. He does a great job of telling a wonderful story complete with awesome characters.

Ruth was a fantastic character! He did a great job of capturing both sides to Ruth…the strong, unyielding, and determined business woman and the tender side of her that is looking for love.

Nick was a perfect match to Ruth even if she couldn’t see it at first. He as patient, kind, and really appreciated the woman she was. She could be herself with him…faults and all.

This is really a great chick lit read told with the perfect combination of humor, wit, and romance.

Coming Home to Merriment Bay: Part Two: Sparks Fly by Emily Harvale Blog Tour with Review

Coming home to Merriment Bay Part 2

Coming Home to Merriment Bay: Part Two: Sparks Fly

by Emily Harvale

Synopsis:

Part Two of this heartwarming four-part serial about finding the strength to put the past behind you and to reach out for a future filled with happiness and love.

Cat Devon knew she couldn’t avoid Amias Wells for long. She also knew sparks would fly the moment they came face to face. They never did get on and nothing has changed in eighteen years – except that Amias is even more annoying. So why does Cat still catch her breath whenever he looks her way?

The fact he flies a vintage Spitfire for the Merriment Bay WWII Museum doesn’t interest Cat, but his knowledge of the former RAF pilots stationed there certainly does. She wants to find out all she can about the man in the photo in Viola’s trunk. And what with hospital visits, dealing with her mum, and sorting out problems with Viola’s house, Cat could use more than just Kyra’s help.

But Kyra makes it clear she thinks Cat and Amias should spend more time together. Which is ridiculous. Apart from the fact they don’t get on, Amias wasn’t interested in Cat before the accident that left the ugly scars on her face and body, so he definitely won’t be attracted to her now. Besides, Cat’s not looking for romance. She’s happy with her life just the way it is.

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

This is the second installment in the Merriment Bay series and continues right where book 1 ended.

Cat and her daughter, Kyra, are trying to figure out the identity of the man in an old photo and the author of some letters of Cat’s grandmother. She has relented and has agreed to ask Amias to help her. If you read book 1, you know these two have a very complicated relationship.

The book is short, but it is packed full of substance. I can’t really go into much detail because I don’t want to spoil anything. I will say that Emily Harvale picked the perfect title for this one, “Sparks Fly.” The sparks definitely fly between Cat and Amias, and I’m really interested to see the journey they are going to take together.

Harvale has a talent of giving her readers just enough to keep us coming back for more. I will definitely keep coming back for more, and I can’t wait to read the next installment.

Unspoken Words by K.M. Golland Blog Tour with Excerpt & Review

UW - BT banner

This is a story of unspoken words and how loud they can be.

Unspoken Words, “a wonderful story of first love, first heartbreak” from K.M. Golland is available now!

Unspoken Words - E-Cover

Connor Bourke and I met when we were twelve years old. He was a quiet boy with so much to say and only one way to say it—through song. He’d lost his best friend to cancer, so I showed him there was love and life in loss, and to hold on to his memories, always.

Eloise Mitchell was a blazing fire when my world turned dark. She’d shined so bright and burned so fierce that the wall I’d built around myself simply melted to the ground at her feet.

We shared everything together:

Our first kiss,

first love,

first mistake,

and first regret.

She taught me to speak,

to forgive,

and to never forget.

Through his music, he could say all he needed to say except for, ‘I love you’.

I could never tell her those three words.

Yet, I knew he meant them, that he loved me beyond all measure, beyond time

… beyond a broken heart.

I loved her more than anything.

Our bond was unbreakable.

Our love was ever after.

But, then, we tend to destroy the ones we love most.

And all bonds break, especially when the heart is what holds them together.

4 STARS

If you want a story that will make you feel every emotion and then some, without a traditional HEA, this is the book for you.

Meeting one summer at the age of 12, Ellie and Connor are drawn to each other like a moth to a flame. Connor had just lost his best friend to cancer and will hardly speak to anyone and Ellie is determined to help ease his pain and help him find light in the darkness. They form a friendship that summer with a bond so strong, it will never be broken. After a while, the two become more than friends and continue on together through most of high school until an argument leads to mistakes being made that this pair may not be able to come back from.

Can these two find their way back to each other and forgive past hurts?

I loved the bond that Connor and Ellie shared. It is truly a bond that a good romance is made of. The struggles they face and the ups and downs are realistic and heart and gut-wrenching at the same time. This was the roller coaster of all roller coasters in a book and for that, I say a job well done by KM Golland. I struggled with writing my review because while the story was beautiful, I had high hopes for a better ending. Overall, a well-written book and I am open to reading this author again.

Unspoken Words - Get burned

Excerpt

“Eloise.” Connor’s hand shot out and clasped mine. “Don’t leave.”

“Please let go. I can’t stay here right now. I need air.”

He didn’t quite chuckle but waved his hand at the space around us instead. “There’s plenty of air.”

“Yeah, but you’re stealing it,” I choked out, unable to hold back my tears. “You’re always stealing my air.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You!” I shrugged out of his clasp so that I could point my trembling finger at him. “You breathe air into me and then you steal it, and I’m left gasping. Why do you do that? Why can’t you just let me breathe with you?”

Connor’s wide eyes searched mine, darting from side to side like a ball in a pinball machine. He looked so lost and helpless, and stupid, so I elaborated. “Every second we are together, I feel alive. Every kiss, every touch, every unspoken word breathes life into me and I tether myself to it, afraid to let go. But then you refuse to tell me how you truly feel with the words you were given, words I know you can damn well say and choose not to, and it sucks that air right back out of me, and I … I can’t breathe.”

He closed his eyes, his shoulders sagging.

“Why’s it so hard for you to say?”

Connor didn’t respond. He just kept his eyes pressed shut, as if I weren’t even there, and it ripped me in two.

“JUST SAY IT,” I shouted. “Just tell me you love me. I know you do.”

“If you know I do then why do you need to hear it?”

“Because some words mean so much. Some words need to be heard and spoken.”

“Not those.”

“Of course those. They’re the most important three words anyone can say.”

“No, baby, you’re wrong.” Connor opened his eyes, grasped my arms, and pulled me to sit on his lap, securing me tightly, his finger tracing a heart over my own. “My love for you goes beyond what words can say and do, so yeah, I choose not to say them. Those three words are empty where we’re concerned.”

I sobbed. “But I need to hear them.”

“You don’t,” he whispered, pressing his palm over my heart and placing my palm over his, the pressure firm, both of our hands unmoving. “Do you feel that?”

A reverberating beat travelled through my body into his and from his into mine, our pressed hands a bridge, one beginning where one ended. We begin where we end.

What I’d written in my notebook before we made love hit me like a truck, and I jolted and gasped.

“What, Eloise? What’s wrong?”

“I get it.”

“Get what?”

“I get that you don’t want to say what you feel or that some words to you are empty. I get that, deep down, we don’t need words to prove our love, that what’s in here,” I said, massaging my fingers into his chest, “and here,” I added, twitching my other hand over my breast, “speak for us.”

A small smile crept across his face.

“But,” I continued, “words mean a lot to me. You know that. They’re not empty where I’m concerned. They could never be empty.”

He sucked in a deep breath and let it out slowly. “If you want words so desperately, I’ll give you words. But they’ll be my words. No one else’s.”

“All I’ve ever wanted was your words, Connor Burke.”

“Okay,” he said, cupping my face. “You’re. My. Ever. After.”

A tear spilled down my cheek. They weren’t the words I’d expected him to say and, yet, to him, they meant more. They meant always and forever.

They were perfect.

Sinking into his arms, I let Connor cradle me for what felt like an eternity, and I realised in that moment that an eternity with him would never be long enough, that always and forever was too short.

The Raided Heart: A Border Reiver Romantic Adventure (The Historic Hearts Book 1) by Jennifer C. Wilson Blog Tour with Review & Giveaway (Win 2 x e-copies of The Last Plantagenet? (Open Internationally)

The Raided Heart

The Raided Heart (The Historic Books #1)

by Jennifer C. Wilson

Synopsis:

Meg Mathers, the headstrong youngest sibling of a reiving family on the English-Scottish border, is determined to remain at her childhood home, caring for the land and village she’s grown up with. When an accident brings her a broken ankle and six weeks in the resentful company of ambitious and angry young reiver Will Hetherington, attraction starts to build. Both begin to realise they might have met their match, and the love of their lives, but 15th century border living is not that simple, as Meg soon finds herself betrothed to the weakling son of a tyrannical neighbour, Alexander Gray. When tragedy strikes, can Meg and Will find their way back to each other, and can Will finally take his own personal revenge on Gray?

Christie’s Review

4 STARS

The Raided Heart is a beautiful and emotional historical saga!

Meg is the youngest child of a reiving family. She has taken the place as the matriarch since her mother’s death. She is a strong woman who is protective of her family and the land she has grown up on. One night when her brothers and their band of reivers return, Meg sprains her ankle, and her brothers make young Will care for her since they blame him for the accident.

Will is pretty resentful and doesn’t want to be stuck taking care of a woman. However, as the two spend more time together, this unlikely pair fall deeply in love. That happiness doesn’t last long as Meg is promised to marry Alexander Gray, a neighbor. This is when the novel gets very emotional. Gray is a terrible person, and I’m putting that mildly! He epitomizes the meaning of a villian.

Meg has to endure a great deal living with him. Despite their separation, Meg and Will’s love doesn’t fade. It somehow grows stronger. They are in a race to find a way to find their HEA despite the danger that may pose to both of them.

The book is a beautiful love story yet it is also an adventure. The author goes into detail with the raids and really puts the reader into the story. It is also filled with intrigue because Gray and Will share a connection because of their past.

If you are looking for a book that is a breath-taking romance and adventure, you can’t go wrong with this historical fiction book! Looking forward to more in the series!

Shelley turned her head, looking between them both. “You know I thought it was weird that neither one of you looks a thing like your father.”

Wolf shrugged. He was happy about that. “Guess we took after Ma’s side.”

“Nope. I spent the afternoon looking through pictures of Cassidy’s family while we played with beets. They’re all small. She said Robert’s people were, too.”

Leo sighed. “We’re not aliens, Shell.”

Oh, god, had his mother gotten to her? “No alien DNA here.”

She shrugged, a teasing smile on her lips. “I don’t know. You seem smarter and faster and more agile than the normal human. And hey, I wouldn’t mind if my kids got an edge because their dads had some freaky genetics.”

She laughed and threw her arms around Leo, kissing him soundly. She turned and gave Wolf the same treatment.

He could actually see several play scenarios where being half-alien might be fun.

“Hey, I have about thirty minutes before I have to drink beet juice. Why don’t we have one last crazy fling before we’re boring old married people?” Shelley asked, a glint in her eye.

Wolf knew just the place. “There’s a big closet where Zane keeps the dry goods.”

He started to lead them back, finding the door and hauling them all in. He shut the door and turned on the small light. Thank god Lucy, Zane’s waitress, was as obsessively, compulsively clean as his brother. The storage room was pin neat and had enough space for what he needed to do.

“Shouldn’t we turn the lights off?” Shelley asked.

Leo stared at her. “Shouldn’t you take your clothes off?”

Yep, he was already in Dom mode. That was plain to see. “Hurry, baby. He’ll spend all his time spanking you and then we won’t get to the part where I feel some small amount of relief for my aching dick.”

It was only the truth. He’d been hard for days. Well, the whole sweat lodge thing had actually been a blessing since his cock had shriveled up at the thought of being alone in a sweaty, naked place with his brother and de facto stepfather, and his stepfather had been talking sex. It had been damn funny until he got a picture of it in his head. He was actually happy now that he was hard again. For a couple of minutes, he thought his cock might be dead.

“Well, we can’t have that, can we?” Shelley pulled the tie on her wrap dress and was handing it to Leo in no time at all. Her gorgeous curves were on full display in a sexy black bra and some killer heels. No panties. His girl had learned that lesson long ago.

Leo sighed, his hand covering her shoulders and sliding down to her breasts. “Do you have any idea how much we’ve missed these breasts?”

Wolf flicked the back clasp of her bra because the situation was far too desperate for a ton of playtime. His brother liked to warm up, but Wolf was already on fire. “We sat around drinking beer last night and moaning about how long it had been since we’ve seen you naked, baby.”

A shake in Leo’s voice gave away the fact that he was on edge, too. “It’s been eight days, thirteen hours, and twenty-four minutes.”

Her head fell back against Wolf’s shoulder as she laughed. “Well, you two certainly know how to make a girl feel wanted.”

DB03-BTBANNER-SBPR

No Whisk, No Reward, an all-new romantic comedy with twists and turns from Ellie Kay, is available now!

20190718_DB03_No Whisk No Reward_Kay_KDP_FINAL

How do you know if a risk is worth taking? If you knew, there wouldn’t be any risk.

Following a disastrous appearance on a televised baking show, Sophie Copeland is certain things can’t get any worse. Several calamities later, Sophie finds herself in Green Valley, Tennessee with no plan, no place to stay, and no prospects. But at least she has a temporary seasonal arrangement with the famed Donner Bakery. And that’s something, right?

It’s not permanent, and it’s not a home, but it’s still something.

Enter Joel Barnes, a Green Valley mystery, wrapped in rumors, and a whispered connection to the local notorious biker gang. Joel’s got a name for being bad news, but he also has an apartment for rent.

Intrigued by the dichotomy of Joel’s reputation and sexy southern pull, Sophie can’t help but be tempted, even though she knows—given her (bad) luck—she should stay far, far away. . .

Yet as everyone knows, without risk, there’s no reward.

‘No Whisk, No Reward’ is a full-length contemporary romantic comedy, can be read as a standalone, and is book#3 in the Donner Bakery series, Green Valley World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

Excerpt

That’s when I saw Joel sitting alone in a booth by a large window, eating a sandwich, and reading a newspaper.

Oh. Hello, conflicted feelings. You’re looking extra conflicting today. Did you do something with your hair?

His gorgeous brown hair was a mess and the sleeves of his gray shirt were pushed up revealing his forearms which looked even thicker than I remembered them being, as he worked to fold the gigantic pages of the newspaper into neat manageable folds.

This man was seriously hotter than a melting ice-cream analogy.

And also, possibly involved with a crime organization! I reminded myself as I continued to stand uselessly trying to find somewhere to sit.

I tried not to stare, but it was impossible not to smile at the indelicate way he shoved the corner of his sandwich into his mouth and then proceeded to chew as though it might try to escape.

He picked up his coffee and was mid-sip when his eyes rose up from the rim of his cup and saw me standing by the entrance staring at him.

Busted.

“Take a seat wherever you can find one, hon, I’ll be along shortly to take your order,” a lady with a nameplate that read Janice, instructed me as she hurried by with a tray of coffee and doughnuts.

I looked back over at Joel who was watching me and gestured to the empty seat across from his.

My mind immediately went to Joy and Tempest’s reaction when they found out he was my landlord, but I quickly reminded myself that he’d done nothing to warrant any rudeness on my part.

Despite their apprehension, I figured this was a good opportunity to try and get more insight into whether I thought their response carried any weight.

Plus, I really needed coffee.

I made my way over, feeling his eyes on me as I crisscrossed around tables while trying to be ever vigilant of any sudden movements from other patrons.

My good sense will not be thwarted by your blue-green eyes and frowny brows, you magnificent biker beast.

“Good afternoon,” he greeted in a smooth as hot honey drawl. I was glad that I was already halfway into the seat because I felt my knees completely give out.

Traitor knees.

My armor of detachedness was not as hefty as I’d hoped.

“Taking a break from work?” I inquired, proud of my cool, even tone.

“Yep, just grabbing something to eat. You?”

“I’m done for today,” I replied reaching for a menu and unfolding it as though it were just as informative as his newspaper.

“Nice. Got any plans?”

“Not really, I was going to check out the bookstore downstairs, but that’s about—”

I was interrupted by the feeling of fingers gently stroking my cheek and looked up to find him reaching across the table, his eyes focused on a spot as he gently swiped at something on my face.

“Sorry, you got flour or something on your cheek it was driving me crazy,” he said before pulling away and leaning back coolly against his seat.

I’m gonna get thwarted, aren’t I?
