A Top 10 Read of 2021

The Fourth Charm by Maya Hughes is a beautifully, written best friends to lovers romance full of emotion!!!

Marisa and LJ have been friends since they were children. Each of them have offered the other a safe place when things were tough growing up. As they grew older, that bond and friendship developed into feelings that went beyond friendship. However, those few moments when they both might have felt that spark never amounted to anything more. Their time together is rapidly ending…LJ hopefully going into professional football, and Marisa going to Europe for a once in a lifetime chance internship. I could feel their chance at romance slipping through their fingers, and I was at times screaming at my Kindle for them to “wake up” and see what was right in front of them!!!!

Hughes did such a great job of giving her readers their backstory. I loved the flashbacks of their childhood together. Granted, both had things happen in their childhood that completely determined their future…Marisa had a rougher go of it. Yet, they were ALWAYS there for one another. I could see that they could have such a great future together if they could let go of the past, especially Marisa. The synopsis just scratches the surface of their relationship. There are two prominent backstories that add angst to the story…LJ’s determination of going pro and what it would mean to his family. Marisa has a whole lot of baggage to unpack. 

I have to say LJ is one of my very favorite characters. Without spoiling things, he isn’t what all the rumors swirling around campus say he is!!! He is the whole package…looks, sex appeal, and oh my goodness, his heart is made of pure gold. I just LOVED him. 

Marisa is a very complex, complicated character. I would get so MAD at her for running hot and cold with LJ, but as I got to know her, I could understand! She deserves someone who loves her, and she deserves answers from her father. 

The Fourth Charm is the first top 10 read of 2021 for me. It isn’t just your normal New Adult Romance. The story itself is complex as are the characters. It’s definitely worth reading!!!!!

Campus King by Mickey Miller is a combination of second chance and enemies to lovers romance, and it’s a quick, sweet, and sexy read!!!!

Colin and Charlotte have a past, one Charlotte thought she left in the past until she finds out he will be one of her new roommates. She attempts to convince herself that what happened with them was her senior year in high school. She only has to get through her senior year until she graduates college and is on to better things. Too bad, Colin didn’t get that memo. He wants a future with Charlotte, and when he knows what he wants, he is all in. 

I liked both characters. Each wasn’t perfect. Both had insecurities about their future together. Charlotte is afraid he will leave without warning again, and Colin is afraid of the feelings he has for her. Yet, they are both trying; therefore, there is a bit of angst. If there wasn’t, the book wouldn’t be believable. 

Miller took his time developing their new relationship. I liked the way he emphasized the friendship they had. It really added to the romance. He also added a great cast of secondary characters. Can I just say I love the fact that Charlotte’s ex wasn’t a jerk like in other books in the genre!  I’m looking forward to the next book Miller writes!

Jennifer Sucevic is a brand new writer to me, and I have to say I LOVE her!!!! I completely fell in love with her story and her characters! 

Rowan and Demi have known each other for years. Her father is the coach for the football team, and Rowan is the star quarterback. However, he has been like a part of the family for years. Too bad, Demi doesn’t feel the same. She finds him arrogant and don’t even get her started on the rumors about him on campus of his skills off of the football field. Yet, there is a part of her that finds him attractive…yeah, she hates that part of her. 

“The truth is that Rowan frightens me. He makes me feel things I’m not necessarily ready for. It’s been that way from the moment I laid eyes on him.” ~Demi~

She can’t seem to get away from him on campus now that they have classes together. As she is forced to spend more time with him, she begins realizing that there is more to him than meets the eye. Could all those rumors be wrong????

Rowan has always had it bad for Demi. He has just kept it locked up deep inside his heart. He doesn’t feel like he has ever been good enough for her.

He grew up very differently than her. He never really knew what it was to feel safe and secure within your family. Thanks to her father, Rowan was given another chance. To say his feelings for her are complicated would be an understatement. I loved Demi, but let me say the superstar was Rowan. He had it all…looks, sex appeal, and a heart any woman would be lucky to have. He adores Demi, and it shows. He truly deserved his HEA. 

I liked the slow burn between them even though it was evident from the beginning that they had tons of chemistry!!!! The author really took her time in developing the relationship between them. It was steamy but also romantic…at times, my heart just pitter pattered for Rowan. I’m so glad I got the opportunity to read Campus Player, and I can’t wait to read more from her!!!!

A Top Read in Psychological Thriller

The Wrong Family by Tarryn Fisher is a compelling, riveting, and a nail-biter of a read! As usual, I finish her books usually within a day!!!

The book is told in two women’s voices, Winnie and Juno. Fisher definitely digs deep into both women’s psyches. At first glance, it appears these two women couldn’t be more different. As I learned more, they shared more than a few similarities. Both have worked in the mental health field, both have made really bad decisions in the past, and both feel like they know what is best for those around them, whether in their personal or professional lives. 

Each woman thought their past decisions were the right ones, but they soon learn you can be wrong. Juno lives in the Winnie’s home, along with Winnie’s husband, Nigel, and their son, Samuel. In the beginning, she thinks they are the perfect family, and really, that is what Winnie tries to portray to the outside world. When Juno hears something she was never meant to hear, she decides she has to intervene. Has she learned nothing from her past…all she has to do is look to her past to realize her last intervention didn’t go so well. Winnie knows something about that because her actions in the past have completely altered her life with her husband and son. Winnie and Juno’s paths are about to converge in ways they never imagined. 

If you know anything about Tarryn Fisher’s writing, you know never to trust her synopses. There is so much going on underneath the surface. She perfectly pulls back each layer to reveal twists and turns you never see coming! 

I saw that some reviewers mentioned that this isn’t like her books in the past. It was a bit different from her other stuff, but I thought it was just as good! For me, that is a characteristic of a great writer. Fisher has never fit into a nice, perfect genre, and that is what makes her so amazing, and she always keeps me coming back for more!
