The Assist: A College Sports Romance (Smart Jocks Book 1)

by Rebecca Jenshak

Synopsis:

You know those stories where the smart girl tutors the dumb jock? This isn’t it.

Blair:

What’s the probability of insulting the one guy on campus I need to help me pass statistics? If I knew, I wouldn’t be standing in front of Wes Reynolds begging him to tutor me.

Basketball player, sexy, arrogant, always sleeping through class… these are the things I knew about him. What I didn’t know is that he is a seriously smart jock.

Wes:

What’s the best way to get rid of the peppy and unrelenting girl that keeps asking me to tutor her? If I knew, I wouldn’t be staring at her tan legs and attempting to teach her statistics.

Sorority girl, fine as f**k, determined, ball buster… these are the things I knew about her. What I didn’t know is that she is all the things I didn’t realize I wanted or needed.

Or that one semester with her would change everything.

The Assist by Rebecca Jenshak was a fantastic story with fantastic narration! Jenshak really puts a twist on the athlete/tutor romance. It’s actually the jock that is the tutor. There isn’t anything sexier than a smart man, and Wes is an athlete too! No wonder Blair fell for him like she did!!!

Both Wes and Blair were great characters. They complemented each other perfectly, making each one better. There wasn’t too much angst. They both have to adjust their life expectations when life throws them a curveball. That is a part of becoming an adult. Wes had a few moments when I wanted to throw something at him, but he does redeem himself. I really enjoyed watching these two fall in love.

I also loved the secondary characters, like Vanessa and Joel. However, my favorite by far was Gabby, Blair’s childhood friend. I really LOVED her, and she is a big reason that Blair is the wonderful person that she is. I’m so glad to see she has her own story in a later book.

The narrators, Ern Mallon and Jason Clarke, were outstanding narrators. I didn’t just enjoy their voices, but they made me believe they were Blair and Wes. They pulled me heart and soul into their story.

I’m so glad I found Rebecca Jenshak, and I’m looking forward to listening/reading more from her!

Beard With Me (Winston Brothers #6) by Penny Reid Blog Tour with Review

BWM-Blog Tour Banner.jpg

“This is Penny Reid at her finest.” — L.B. Dunbar, author

Beard With Me, an epic and breathtaking story from New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Penny Reid, is available now!

KDP_BWM.jpg

No one is better at surviving than Scarlet St. Claire and making the best out of circumstances beyond her control is Scarlet’s specialty. In an apocalyptic situation, she’d be the last person on earth, hermitting like a pro, singing along to her CD Walkman, and dancing like no one is watching.

Scarlet is clever, Scarlet is careful, and Scarlet is smart . . . except when it comes to Billy Winston.

No one is better at fighting than Billy Winston and raging against his circumstances—because nothing is beyond his control—is Billy’s specialty. In an apocalyptic situation, he’d be the first person on earth to lead others to safety, overcome catastrophe, or die trying.

Billy is fearless, Billy is disciplined, and Billy is honorable . . . except when it comes to Scarlet St. Claire.

‘Beard With Me’ is the origin story of Billy Winston and Scarlet St. Claire (aka Claire McClure) and is just the beginning of their epic love story.

5 STARS

Penny Reid gives her readers a warning at the beginning that isn’t her typical Winston Brothers book, and there are all sorts of potential triggers for readers. She is not wrong, but I still LOVE her and her writing!

This is a prequel of sorts, but it’s also part of a duet with the sequel coming out pretty soon! I was excited to finally get the story of Billy and Scarlet/Claire. It is pretty fast-paced, but I could believe and feel the bond they shared.

Both have pretty terrible childhoods, and both impressed me in the ways they were able to cope with it. Both showed incredible resolve and strength. I loved seeing the Winston clan as children. Those were the places I laughed in the book. I know I’m being kind of cagey in writing the review, but I don’t want to even hint at a spoiler. Just know…this is one of my favorite books by Reid!

Despite this being different, and it doesn’t end like the other books in the series, I loved it! She was able to bring out all my emotions. There aren’t many writers that can make you laugh while also breaking your heart. Yet, Reid did just that. It shows her versatility and talent as a writer. It is always why she will be one of my very favorite writers of all time!

*Scarlet*

“Do you want me to leave?”

Yes. That would be best, a wise voice said between my ears.

So of course I inhaled deeply and said as calmly as I could manage, “I thought we were going to go get firewood.”

“Okay. Good.”

“But then,” I blurted, flustered and irritated with myself for not speaking wisdom, “You should go. You can’t tell me carting firewood back and forth between your house and here is how you want to spend the last of your Thanksgiving weekend.”

“I didn’t say it was.” He began making his way up the incline.

“But you just said—”

“How about we make a deal.” Billy dropped the kindling next to my little woodpile, dusting his hands off on his pants. “I’ll cart the firewood, and you sing.”

“You want me to serenade you while we carry firewood?”

He smiled, slow and easy as he walked to me and reached out his hand. On autopilot, I accepted it and allowed him to help me up.

As soon as I was standing, his gaze moved from my hairline down to my nose, lips, and then chin, saying quietly, “I’ll take a serenade from you anytime.”

Thunk ka-thunk. That was my heart. It had been doing the thunk ka-thunk quite a lot around him. I ignored it, because what else could I do?

“And you’re not carrying the wood.” He tugged on my hand, pulling me out of my daze and past my tent.

“I will too carry wood.” Struggling to find my bearings, I stumbled after him. “I can carry logs just fine.”

“You’ll carry a log.” Billy fit his fingers between mine, pressing our palms together and grinning at me like he was waiting for me to argue and he couldn’t wait.

Snapping my mouth shut, I glared at him.

“Nothing to say?”

Maintaining my glare, I walked next to him. I wasn’t being led anywhere I didn’t wish to go. Not anymore. He wasn’t talking me into anything else.

“That’s an awfully mean look, Scarlet.” His grin grew, his brutally attractive eyes glowing happily as he peered down at me.

“Well, you deserve it. Always trying to tell me what I can and can’t do. I’m not arguing with you about this. I’m carrying as much wood as I want and you can take your stupid, chauvinistic opinions and shove them up your pretty-boy ass.”

Goodness. Where had that come from?

Billy’s steps faltered and his mouth fell open, his eyebrows rising high on his forehead. He stared at me, looking shocked as hell. And then in the next moment, he threw his head back and laughed. But he did not let go of me, instead bringing my knuckles to his chest as his deep, rumbly laughter filled the empty spaces between the trees, surrounding us.

Crushing me.

Yes. I was well and truly crushed as I could only watch Billy Winston laugh, desperately basking in the image of him so delighted and relaxed. I had the odd sense that his laughter also filled the empty spaces inside of me, the neglected, vacant rooms, and even a few places that felt brand-new, like he’d created them.

All that noble honesty he carried around like a boulder abruptly lifted, revealing him. Just him. Carefree and young and happy. Someone he might’ve been if his burdens hadn’t been so heavy, his responsibilities so broad.

It lasted only a minute, maybe two, maybe less, but I had the sense of being caught afterward. Billy’s laughter had receded, but he’d spun a web while I’d been staring at him, holding his hand.

His grin became smaller and he bit his bottom lip, his gaze dropped to my mouth. “You think I’m pretty?”

“You know you’re pretty,” I said, bizarrely out of breath, rattled, needing to anchor my focus to a tree beyond him and waging war against the heat climbing up my neck to my cheeks. Oddly, my eyes stung. I blinked.

His attention was still on me. I felt it, but I didn’t dare look at him. I couldn’t handle one of Billy Winston’s intense stares right now. He’d probably use my scattered wits to his advantage, talk me into something I shouldn’t want to do, and then I’d be kicking myself later.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice deep with concern, all trace of his earlier humor gone.

I huffed, trying half-heartedly to steal my hand back from him. He didn’t let it go, instead taking my tugging as a signal to step closer, filling my vision.

“Scarlet—”

“Are you ever going to teach me how to play the guitar?” I closed my eyes.

He didn’t answer right away, and I felt him hesitate, his mind work before he muttered, “It’s only been a week.”

A quality to his voice made me think he wasn’t answering the question I’d asked, but rather he was reminding himself that it had only been a week since we’d struck the deal.

Was that only last week? Why does it feel like so much has changed?

Then he said, “Don’t be angry.”

“I’m not angry.” I was muddled, my head and heart hurt, I was incredibly confused, but I wasn’t angry.

The air shifted and I felt him move closer. A second later, the fingers of his free hand were at my ear, tucking my hair behind it, his fingertips lingering at my neck, sending wave after wave of goose bumps every which way. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t swallow. I couldn’t think. Every nerve in my body strained toward him and I didn’t understand it. What is happening?

“Have you ever been kissed, Scarlet?”

“Another brilliantly written winner. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up, you will not regret it.” —Kate Stewart, USA Today bestselling author

Perfectly Adequate, an all-new must-read romantic comedy from Jewel E. Ann, is available now!

PerfectlyAdequate-ebookFINAL

Dr. Elijah Hawkins needs … something.

After his wife jumps headfirst into a midlife crisis, he’s left with his young son, Roman, and a lot of unanswered questions.

That something turns out to be a someone—Dorothy Mayhem, nursing student, patient transporter, reckless driver, and emu owner.

Dorothy studies humans, the neurotypical kind, through books and television. Then she emulates their behavioral patterns to fit in with her peers.

But nothing can prepare her for Dr. Elijah Hawkins.

Single dad.

Brilliant pediatric oncologist.

And the sexiest doctor at the hospital.

When his failed attempts at asking her out turn into a string of playdates with his son, Dorothy finds herself unexpectedly enamored with the boy and his father.

And that’s a problem, a huge one, because Elijah’s ex-wife is a famous plastic surgeon—and Dorothy’s idol.

Perfectly Adequate is a beautiful, hilarious, and heart-felt journey along the “human” spectrum.

Perfectly wonderful story!! Jewel E. Ann is one author you can count on every time to write amazing stories!!

Following his divorce from his childhood sweetheart, Dr. Eli Hawkins is still trying to figure out why his marriage ended and how to co-parent his adorable son with the woman who has left his heart in shambles. It has been a long year of asking questions with no answers and going between loving and hating his ex-wife. But the day he meets the quirky patient transporter, Dorothy, he realizes that he isn’t so focused on the past.

Dorothy works as a patient transporter at a local hospital while going to school full time for nursing. She lives a very orderly life, keeping to the same schedule every week due in part to her having Autism Spectrum Disorder. When she meets Dr. Hawkins in the hospital, she feels an immediate attraction to him but knows he is the ex-husband of another doctor at the hospital who is her idol. She assumes that the hot doctor could not possibly be interested in her and so she doesn’t understand when Eli makes several attempts at asking her out for a date.

Can this unlikely couple be exactly what each other needs and find their happily ever after?

I loved this story right from the start! As a mother of a son with ASD, I had great fondness towards Dorothy and the struggles she faced with trying to understand social cues and the rigidity at times with her schedule. The relationship that blossomed between Dorothy and Roman, Eli’s son, was a beautiful thing to witness as well. This story has all the feels -funny, sweet, endearing and heartwrenching story! I highly recommend this book and all the others by this author!!

Excerpt

“You can call me Eli.”

She swallows hard. “I don’t actually think I can.”

“Why not?” I force my gaze away from her mouth.

The second our eyes meet, she averts her attention to her feet. “Because you’re half of the Hathaway-Hawkins duo.”

This is a new one to me. “I’m divorced.”

“I know. I …” She makes an attempt to look at me, but her attention shifts to my temple then maybe my ear. “I mean you’re a brilliant doctor, and Dr. Hathaway is too—so brilliant. God, she’s just phenomenal. Like there are no words. But still … you change the lives of young children. You save them. You’re what every young person entering the medical field can only dream of becoming. You’ve earned the title. I can’t call you by your name. It’s too personal. I don’t know … almost intimate.”

She has Julie on a really high pedestal. Me? Down a few pegs. Sounds about right for my life at the moment. It’s not that Julie doesn’t deserve to be on the pedestal. No matter how much I hate her, I still love her. And her skills as a pediatric plastic surgeon are unmatched. She deserves Dorothy’s admiration.

But I don’t want to talk about medicine, accolades, and saving lives. I know … I know … how terrible of me. Sorry, but I need something for myself. Something personal and maybe a little selfish.

Definitely intimate.

“I don’t need a babysitter for Roman.”

She jerks her head back, giving me her full attention, eyes squinted, gaze locked to mine. “What?”

I trap my top lip between my teeth, drowning in coconuts as my heart races, sending ample blood to all regions of my body. God … I just want—need—to kiss her.

“Oh jeez …” She shakes her head, closing her eyes for a breath. “You invited me to dinner to … flirt.” Her eyes open to their widest point.

A tiny laugh escapes me. I can’t help it. Everything about this woman feels like a rebirth. “I invited you to dinner because Roman really likes you. And I just can’t thank you enough for all that you’ve done for him. You’re so generous.”

Gah! I suck at this!

What is my problem? Yes. The answer is yes! Yes, Dorothy, I invited you over to flirt, maybe even kiss. And other things …

“Oh.” She takes a step backward, stumbling a bit as the front door catches her, and more embarrassment tints her cheeks. “Well, now I feel stupid. Yes, of course you invited me here because Roman likes me. Duh. Now I just look like an idiot for assuming you wanted to flirt with me. And really, no need to thank me. My generosity is selfish. It makes me feel good to do nice things. That’s all. And really, you’ve bought me coffee and made me dinner again. It’s like I should be thanking you again. But that’s probably weird. So … I’ll just go now.”

Really, really weird shit goes through my mind as she fidgets. Dr. Hawkins is nowhere to be found. Neither is Roman’s dad. Raging-puberty-hormones Eli Hawkins invades my head—both of them really. And I just want to kiss Dorothy. That’s the PG version of my thoughts. Most of them are R-rated. Worse than the R-rating. All I can think about are the ways Dorothy and I can be generous with each other, leading to never-ending thank-you’s that don’t involve stationary, replacement scrubs, superhero capes, pasta dinners, lunch boxes … or clothing.

“Should we call it even? No more thank-you’s,” I suggest.

“Okay.” She lifts her gaze, eyes going a little cross-eyed like her focus is centered on the bridge of my nose.

“Okay.” I release a slow breath, but it does very little to relax all of my body. “Can I ask your age?” I’m not sure why I’ve been so chicken about asking her age. I think it worries me that she’s too young, and I’ll feel like a dirty old man having really inappropriate thoughts about her.

“I’m thirty. Why?”

“You just look young.”

“I wear massive amounts of sunscreen.”

I nod slowly.

Just kiss her, you big chicken!

What if she doesn’t want to be kissed by me? Or flirt with me? I internally laugh at the memory of her comment and at myself for being just as awkward. Why does something so simple have to be so complicated?

“I have a forty-five-minute drive home.”

And school the next day. Where is my head?

Oh, that’s right …

“Of course. I’m sorry. I lost track of time.”

“Okay.” She smiles.

I love her okay’s. They feel like more than the average okay.

“I’ll walk you out.”

“Have you not closed all of your rings?” She holds up her wrist, signaling to her watch.

I chuckle. “All rings were closed hours ago.”

“We could track each other. Share our rings. Did you know that?”

Rings. Kisses. Trips to the on-call room for sex.

For the love of God … get your shit together, Elijah!

“Never mind. That’s weird.” She shakes her head, rolling her eyes at herself just before opening the door and scurrying ten steps ahead of me. Her pace gains momentum with the hill of my driveway.

My long strides catch up to her at the bottom of it. She looks both ways and bolts across the street to her car, clicks the locks, and opens her door.

“Goodnight!”

“Dorothy Mayhem … you’re killing me.”

She turns just before ducking into the driver’s seat.

“What do you mean?”

Resting my hands on my hips, I drop my chin in defeat and stare at my untied gray canvas shoes. “What if I did ask you to dinner tonight to … flirt?” I glance up, digging my teeth into my bottom lip on a slight cringe.

Her body remains stoic as her eyes shift from side to side, like she’s been caught on a hidden camera. “Well … then I wore the wrong outfit.” She refuses to look me in the eye.

“I think you look amazing.”

“Yes. But this is a playdate outfit. Maybe even one I’d wear to apply for a babysitter position. It’s fun, but wholesome. Practical and safe.”

I just want to spend one day in her head. Everything about her fascinates the hell out of me. The curiosity gives me such a high.

“Tell me about your flirting outfit.”

“Well …” She clears her throat, keeping her focus on the big hill leading out of my development. And of course … her cheeks are perfectly flushed as she talks to the wind. “Since Romeo was involved, I would have chosen my red dress with white stripes. It hits just below my knees, but it’s strapless. And I would have worn my blue cardigan with it and matching blue wedge sandals with straps that tie around my ankles. Flirty … but appropriate for young eyes.”

“And if Roman wouldn’t have been here tonight?” I stare at the side of her head, wondering if she’ll look at me again before driving home.

She narrows her eyes. “I would have taken off the cardigan after you invited me into your house.”

The picture she paints in my head does all kinds of wicked things to me. Why imagining her in a striped strapless dress has such a physical effect on me is a mystery. It’s not like she suggested showing up wearing nothing but high heels and a trench coat. Dorothy Mayhem possesses her own brand of seduction, and I’m completely entangled in every part of it.

“And in this scenario, would you have kissed me after I walked you to your car?”

She turns completely red. I feel certain even her toes hidden in those blue shoes have to be red. “You’re making fun of me.”

Her comment knocks me back a good ten steps, even if my body remains right next to her. Why would she say that?

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

Four Christmases and a Secret by Zara Stoneley is chick lit at its best!!!!

It is described as “Bridget Jones meets the Hallmark Channel,” and that is a perfect analogy! The books begins many years ago when Daisy is at the annual Christmas party hosted by Uncle T. She shares a kiss with the boy who is her nemesis, Ollie Cartwright. Years later, she finds herself sharing a living space with him. She discovers he might not be as bad as she always thought he was, and she may be in danger of losing her heart to him.

Daisy and Ollie’s mothers have been best friends since they were infants but with a touch of competition between them. Daisy has had to endure hearing how wonderful Ollie is every single year. She hasn’t seen him for years, and when she sees him, he makes her even madder. Not only is he successful but gorgeous too. I could empathize with Daisy. It seems Ollie has it all, and she has no job or boyfriend. She isn’t quite sure how to change things even though she is determined to change her life.

I loved Ollie too. I saw him in a different way than Daisy did in the beginning. He is gorgeous and smart, but he is also kind. He loves Daisy for who she is. He doesn’t want her to change who she is. I enjoyed watching these two finally realize they were truly soulmates.

Even though, a lot of the story centers around Christmas, it is a story of second chances, love and hope. Stoneley really makes her secondary characters bring this story to life, especially Uncle T. He really is the person who moves the book along.

If you like rom-coms and books that really tug at your heartstrings, you can’t go wrong with this one.

I couldn’t put this enemies to lovers book down! Harley and Jackson walked right into my heart and haven’t let it go since!!!!

Hated You Then is a brilliant blend of enemies to lovers romance, along with the coming of age story of Harley and Jackson. To say these two hated each other is putting it mildly. They were constantly finding ways to torture each other as children and driving their mothers to their wits’ end. As time passes, those feelings somehow shift to something more. They aren’t quite sure how to deal with it, even though their parents seemed to know the affection they had for each other. I guess the saying is true, “There is a fine line between love and hate.”

Both Jackson and Harley are strong, independently-minded characters. That was evident from the very first pages of this book! I laughed so hard at the things they did to one another as children. Both were so precocious as well!

As the years passed, the two somehow always had each other’s backs despite their confusing feelings for one another. I really loved how Robinson wrote this book. It started with a bang in the present, but then, she went back into the past to the beginnings of the relationship between the two. She didn’t rush it. She took her time, allowing her readers to fall in love with the story and the characters. This does end in a cliffhanger, but that’s okay because this story didn’t need to be rushed. It has all the feels…laughter, swoons, and sadness. I’m looking forward to reading the sequel.

5 STARS

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED, LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!! It had it all…love, chemistry, a swoony rockstar with a heart of gold and a sassy, independent loyal woman who loves him!!!!

All The Forbidden Things is the perfect title for this book because it’s all about forbidden things. Max is in the middle of a nasty separation and now a single father to precious Layla. Billie is returning home to her family after being subject to a vicious attack. The two have known each other for years since Max is her older brother’s best friend. Neither expected the fireworks of seeing each other after all these years, especially Max. He knows he needs to stay very far away from her, but how long can he ignore the pull he feels towards her.

I not only fell in love with Max but with Billie too! She is an amazing woman despite her mere age of 22. She has witnessed things in her life that not many people do, not only did she survive, but she fought to live a somewhat normal life. I loved her connection not only with Max but with Layla too! She is an old soul who loves deeply!

Billie has known Max all her life, and she has always had a crush on him.

“He’s known me all of my life, but he doesn’t really know me at all, and yet I still feel entirely at ease and comfortable in his presence.”

Their connection is full of chemistry but also very deep and romantic.

Max has lived that “rockstar” life, but now he has to think of Layla. He thought he was in love with his ex, but she shattered his idea of what love was supposed to look like. When Billie enters his life again, he is unprepared for the strong feelings she brings brings out, especially when he sees Layla in her arms. He wants it all with her. They definitely have an uphill battle to achieve the dream of being together. He is older than her. She is his best friend’s sister, and he is fighting to be free from his awful ex.

I love a flawed hero, and Max is exactly that. He isn’t perfect, but he is perfect for Billie. He loves his daughter, and who can resist a man like that. I know I can’t.

This is my first read by Lesley Jones, but it definitely won’t be my last. I’m so excited when I find a new writer, and I’m so glad I found Lesley Jones.

EXCERPT

It’s at that point I notice Billie climbing from the car. Although, if Mel hadn’t told me, I’d never have recognised the girl standing on my drive as Billie Wild.

She closes the car door and turns towards me.

Silence.

She stares down at her feet as she moves slowly along my driveway. When she reaches the front of the car, she looks up. The bluest of blue eyes meet mine, and she stops moving.

Deafening silence.

No birds singing.

No traffic sounds.

The silence is so loud it hurts my ears.

What. The. Actual. Fuck?

She takes a step towards me, and my hearing returns. The gravel crunches beneath her green biker boots, a pigeon coos, brakes screech, engines rev . . . a bomb could fucking drop, but nothing, not a single thing can divert my attention from Billie Wild as she moves towards me.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Lesley was born and raised in a small working-class town in Essex, just outside of East London. She’s married with three sons and in 2006 they all moved to the other side of the world, settling on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, about fifty kilometres outside of Melbourne, Australia.

Lesley is currently ‘a stay at home mum’, but in the past, she has worked at ‘good old Mark & Spencer’ for thirteen years and as a teacher’s assistant. As well as writing, Lesley loves to read and has been known to get through four or five books a week, when she’s not writing that is.

Her other interests are watching her boys play football… the round ball version. She’s happy to admit to being an addict of social media and owes a lot to her Facebook and Twitter family in promoting her book. Lesley is also rather partial to a glass or bottle of wine, a nicely chilled Marlborough Sav Blanc being her favourite.

Being a born and raised Essex girl, she will happily admit being a big fan of spray tans, manis, pedis, and is regularly, waxed, tinted and sculpted, although she doesn’t own a pair of white stilettos.

5 STARS

An All-Time Favorite

A Top Read of 2019

Ilsa Mills-Madden has this habit of dragging me in heart and soul into her books from the very first pages, and I Hate You is no different. It’s a sexy, romantic enemies to lovers romance with amazing characters and will definitely leave you swooning.

Charm and Blaze are complete opposites of each other and don’t have much in common except for one very important thing. They are afraid to take a chance on love.

“Love hurts; I know it does. Love is opening yourself up like a book, letting someone see your secrets with every paragraph and page exposed, knowing that the person you’re showing it to can walk away any minute. And maybe he will. Love only works if you try, if you take a chance.” ~Charm~

Charm is an intelligent, funny, and sassy young woman. Blaze is one of the campus’s football stars. She isn’t the type of girl Blaze would be even interested in, but there is something about her he can’t quite resist. She usually picks safer guys than Blaze. However, there is this pull of attraction between them, and before long they give into their desires. Things seem to be going smoothly until Blaze begins having feelings for her, and he can’t have that, so what does he do? He dumps her very publicly, and he becomes her enemy…until he isn’t. These two definitely have an on and off again type relationship.

On the surface, it appears Blaze is a player. He was at one time, but Charm could change that if he would open his heart to her. Underneath his sex appeal and humor is a vulnerable man. He is so frightened that she will eventually leave him because of the way in which he grew up.

“Sooner or later, she’s going to let go…she’s going to look at me…she’s going to see the real me. She’s going to see the truth.” ~Blaze~

What he doesn’t realize is that she does see him, and she is falling in love with the “real” Blaze.

Charm isn’t without her own issues. She has some real trust issues because of her parents’ marriage and the way she was treated by boys when she was younger.  She has her own set of rules when it comes to her relationships, and it doesn’t involve falling in love…until Blaze begins knocking down the walls she has erected to protect herself.

“There’s a hint of authority in his tone and everything inside of me wants to resist, but he has power over me, something no one else has ever had.” ~Charm~

She and Blaze are going to have to decide whether to take that chance on being rejected when they lay their hearts on the line. I loved these two from the very beginning. Each one challenged and complemented the other. There is angst and miscommunication between them, but Madden-Mills is a master at making those things work in her books. Those elements only add more feeling and emotion to the story itself.

I’m showing my age here, but one of my favorite movies was my Sixteen Candles, and it still is. Jake Ryan represented perfection. Every girl in the 80s wanted a Jake Ryan. He made my heart pitter-patter, and Mills-Madden recreates that feeling for me with all of her men EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!! She will ALWAYS be one of my favorite writers!!!! If you haven’t discovered her yet, you have no clue what a delight you are missing!!!!

Excerpt:

“Need some help?”

I’m on my tiptoes when the question comes, trying to reach a book on the top shelf in the bookstore at the student center.

My heart does a nosedive off a cliff as that familiar gruff voice washes over me, his accent a smooth drawl that’s reminiscent of hot summer nights and slow kisses—kisses we never had…well, except for that one time freshman year.

I ignore him and try to grab the book.

“You’re too short. Let me,” Blaze says, this time closer, his voice soft.

I ease back on my feet and whip around, internally wishing I’d worn something more I hate you and don’t you wish you still had me, but sadly, I’m not in my kickass shoes and itchy dress. Today it’s flat-soled red Converse, black joggers, and a Yankees sweatshirt. I blow at a piece of hair in my face. Shit.

Of course, he looks magnificent in a tight long-sleeved black shirt that clings to his broad chest and tapered jeans molded to those leg muscles. His face is unshaven, the darkness on his jawline adding a broody look.

Curse him and his hotness.

I stare at him a little too long, until I snap out of it.

“I don’t need help,” My voice is strangled as I move to brush past him—forget the textbooks—but he reaches out and takes my elbow.

“Charisma—”

His fingers are a hot brand on my skin—it’s the first time we’ve touched in three months—and I pull away. A tremble starts in my legs. How dare he? It was one thing to see him in a social setting and pretend I was fine, but when we’re face to face without people watching… “Don’t put your hands on me. I’m not your hookup anymore, football player.”

His face reddens, and he drops his arms. “I didn’t mean—” he stops, not finishing as he studies my face.

I wonder what he sees. You know what he sees, Charisma—someone who wasn’t up to his usual standards.

Everything I didn’t say last night rushes out. “Didn’t mean to what? Dump me in the middle of my own sorority’s party in front of all my friends and half of campus? And you know, that’s totally fine. We both knew I wasn’t enough to keep your attention.”

His jaw clenches and he frowns, his brow furrowing. “I didn’t plan for things to happen that way.”

“How did you want to break up with me? Over candlelight? A text would have worked just fine,” I bite out.

The silence builds between us, and he watches me intently, as if trying to figure me out. He starts at my hair and works his way down to my feet, then comes back to my face. Just when I think I might combust from the intensity of his eyes, he looks away.

“What?” I cock my hip. “You look like you want to say something.”

He taps his hand against his leg. Ice-blue eyes, ones I used to stare into and get butterflies from, glitter down at me. “You just can’t handle that ended things, sweetheart.”

“Not your sweetheart.”

“Never were.”

Shit…shit…my heart feels like an anvil just landed on it, heavy and hard, and I can’t breathe for a second at his words, part of me pissed, the other part devastated. I wanted to be his sweetheart, I did, but he…

You’re not my type.

“Thanks for the reminder,” I say quietly, my anger folding away piece by piece and slipping into that horrible self-pity I despise.

He closes his eyes and scrubs his face with those talented hands, strong and big and capable, skillful with a football.

He steps in front of me, much like he did last night, and I tilt my head back to take him in. At my height of five feet, three inches, it’s hard to glare at a guy who towers over you and not look ridiculous, but I manage—until his eyes flicker with lingering emotion.

I dart my eyes around the store, searching for a way out, but I’m stuck between him and a bookshelf. “You’re blocking my path.” I focus on his legs. No sexiness there—well, except for the tight muscles under that denim.

“This is what I know,” he says in a low voice, ignoring my statement. “You told me we were just messing around. You set all the rules. Isn’t that how you operate? So why does me ending things with you even matter?”

“You never asked for more. You could have.” The revealing words fall around us, tinged with hurt, and I want to pull them back.

The silence between us crackles, yet I’m aware of other people around us. There are a few girls on another aisle, and I glance over as one of them pulls out her phone. No doubt she’s taking a picture of him. Part of me retreats, anxious she’ll get me in that photo—a girl who clearly doesn’t belong. He doesn’t notice. Everyone knows who he is, and they’re probably wondering why he’s talking to me.

“No, I didn’t,” he finally says, the words taut as if pulled from him unwillingly. He taps his leg, his tell that he’s anxious or angry. We weren’t together long, but every moment we spent together, I studied him like a wine connoisseur given a glass of rare cabernet. I know what makes him laugh, usually random things that make no sense. I know that groan he makes deep in this throat when he slides inside me, like he’s home. I know the feel of his hand when he cups my face and stares at me, a hesitant expression on his face—

“You can’t even look at me anymore. I wonder why,” he says, his voice a challenge.

Steeling myself, I face those baby blues. “You know why. I wish we’d never met up last fall. I wish you’d never flirted with me. I wish I’d never fucked you that first time in the library—”

“Same page. Same fucking page, Charisma.” And then he’s walking away, broad shoulders swaying as he stalks down the aisle…
