New Review: Hard Fall (Trophy Boyfriends #2) by Sara Ney

Release Date: August 18

“Hard Fall”
That’s what my mom is always saying: “The bigger you are, the harder you fall.” She’s talking about love—I’ve never been in it myself, but that doesn’t stop me from secretly matchmaking for my friends. Who would suspect me, a world class athlete, of meddling in other people’s love lives? I love Love, especially when it’s not me who’s doing the falling…

“No Thanks.”
That’s what Hollis Westbrooke said when I asked her on a date. Well, propositioned her, actually—but it was all a big joke; one she doesn’t think is funny. My stomach is in knots since I might actually like this girl so the joke is on me. Hollis’s father is my boss—and she doesn’t date players.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall—especially when biggest player is me.

Hard Fall is exactly why Sara Ney is one of my all-time favorite rom-com writers! I’m so glad she gave her readers Buzz’s story! I was in love with him in Hard Pass, and I fell even harder for him in this one!!! So, this was a perfect title for this book!

Hollis and Buzz might look like a couple who would have nothing in common. Buzz appears to have no cares in the world. He seems so relaxed about everything…nothing is too serious for him. Hollis, on the other hand, is very serious. She is the daughter of his boss, and she wants nothing to do with the family business of baseball. She has made her own way in the world, and she has every intention of continuing that journey. When she meets him, everything she thought she knew about herself and relationships will change…even if she resists at every turn. She will eventually come to realize she has more in common with Buzz than she ever imagined.

Buzz aka Trace is the BEST!!! He is a flirt, and to be honest with you, I thought he was also a player! Holy moly, I was so wrong! That was the nicest surprise of all! Women completely underestimate him. This is a guy who works on houses, is a member of his mother’s book club, and has just about the biggest heart, who truly cares about others’ happiness. In fact, he is a bit of a matchmaker. If women aren’t completely stereotyping him, they are taking advantage of him. Even Hollis makes judgments about him. The press calls him “America’s Favorite Pastime Playboy.” Hollis wants no part of that. She has had her fill of bad men in the form of her ex and her own father. However, he isn’t going to accept that…nope…not Trace. He is an optimist, and he is going to make Hollis his. We all know what he did to Noah in the first book!

As she gets to know him more, she realizes he isn’t at all the playboy she thought he was.

“I was expecting a sarcastic, entitled a**h****, and now that I know for a fact he’s not, I wish I didn’t. I want to go back to the place where I put him in a box, on the shelf, to sit, stereotyped and safely away from my heart.”

Whatever this is with Trace, she begins to see life and even herself differently. She realizes there really are good guys wrapped in the most unlikeliest of packages. She discovers that she can be herself in all her quirkiness with him.

Ney always gives her readers a fantastic secondary cast of characters…Buzz was the perfect example of this! We are able to see why he is the character he is because of his family. OMG…I loved his mother!!!! Being around them, gives our stubborn Hollis a whole new idea of family…one of love and joy.

Ney’s awesome sense of humor always shines through in every one of her books, and it is one of the very reasons I love her writing. For instance,  Trace visualizes himself as Jake Ryan and Hollis as Molly Ringwald in the closing scene of Sixteen Candles. By the way, one of my favorite movies of all time, so I LOVED that! However, my absolute favorite is this one….a nod to Silence of the Lambs….

“I have her, I know it–and I plan to keep her, and not in an ‘I’m going to make a lamp out of your skin’ kind of way.”

OMG, that one had me rolling!!!! If you like a writer who can make you forget about real life for a while, by giving you a book to make you laugh and swoon, that is sweet and spicy, along with great characters, you can never go wrong with Sara Ney!!!!!

The Plus One Pact

The Plus One Pact

By Portia MacIntosh

What if your plus one could be the one…?

Cara has officially run out of men. Her most recent dates have gone from bad to worse, and when her dating app informs her there is no one left in her area to choose from, she is at a dead end.

But with a summer of events ahead of her, she needs to find a solution, fast; someone to keep her company at the never-ending weddings, family gatherings and gender reveal parties that she can’t face going to alone.

So when she meets handsome, confident, Millsy on a night out she may be in luck. They could not be more different in personality, but he too has a summer of events ahead and is desperate to get his family off his back about finding a ‘nice girl’. What if they made a pact to help each other out and be a plus one for the summer? Just as friends of course…?

A brand new romantic comedy from bestseller Portia MacIntosh, perfect for fans of Zara Stoneley, Sophie Ranald and Mhairi McFarlane.

Christie’s Review

The Plus One Pact by Portia MacIntosh is a hilarious romantic comedy/chick lit that will uplift your spirits from the very first few pages.

I’m a huge fan of romcoms, and this one is one of my favorites. It had all the elements I like…a great storyline, great characters, and a lot of laughter!!!!

Cara wants a relationship; she wants to be a part of a happy couple. However, it seems as if fate has other plans. This poor woman has dated her fair share of losers. Some not even making it past the first date. She is desperate for a date to her cousin’s wedding as her cousin has invited Cara’s ex. Cara is definitely not looking forward to seeing her controlling ex-boyfriend.

One night, life changes without Cara even realizing it when she meets Millsy. He comes over after she is stood up. The two talk, and he comes up with a plan to help both of them. They can be each other’s “plus one” for the summer.

This really is a slow burn romance. They become fast friends even though they are complete opposites. Cara is more methodical and thinks things through. Millsy just sort of enjoys living life. For instance, she is a designer for escape rooms, and he is an actor trying to find his big break. Cara feels like she has trouble attracting men…not so much after her makeover, and Millsy appears to have a revolving door of women in his life. These two together are magic!

I just adored both characters. Cara doesn’t have much confidence in herself, and she can’t see what others see.  Millsy sees Cara for who she is deep down as a person. It is almost like he can see into her soul. She can truly be herself with him.

“Sometimes I feel more myself, other times I feel like a fraud. But when I’m around Millsy I just feel so at peace with who I am. I feel as if sees me, not what I’m wearing. He’s always seen me.”

Millsy is just the sweetest. He has such much charisma and pretty much has everyone eating out of his hand. Cara described him perfectly.

“He’s obviously a really good-looking guy and he has this way of making you feel so important. He somehow makes you spend every second questioning why he’s even talking to you, but it’s not because of anything he’s doing”

Not only were Cara and Millsy great characters, but the secondary characters, like Cara and Millsy’s parents are hysterical! They weren’t just empty characters. They really had a lot to add to the story itself.

There were so many moments that were laugh-out-loud funny! Some of my favorite moments were when these two got themselves into some real jams and the hilarious ways they were able to save themselves pure humiliation!!!!

The elements of romance and humor were combined flawlessly to give me one of my favorite romcom/chick lit books I have read in a long time.

One Moment Please-front-size down

That awkward moment when an ER doctor has to inform you that you’re pregnant…with his baby.

Three things Lynsey Jones knows about the hot doctor: he’s grouchy, an arrogant jerk, and strangely obsessed with pie.

Three things Dr. Josh Richardson knows: he doesn’t talk about his past, he doesn’t do relationships, and the crazy girl in the hospital cafeteria who ate a fistful of French silk pie…is annoyingly irresistible.

After a chance meetup at a bar and a heated cab ride together, things come to a head and now instead of hating each other, they’re horizontal in a bed.

Three months later, the weird cafeteria stalker who crept out of Josh’s house like a thief in the night, winds up as his patient in the ER after her Tinder date from hell.

The doctor is prepared to keep it cool and professional. That is until her bloodwork reveals she’s pregnant.

What really throws him for a loop…is the surprise baby…is his.

What happens when the seriously hot and growly ER doctor who kicked you out of a hospital cafeteria turns into an epic one-night-stand? Well, for starters, a surprise pregnancy. Dr. Josh Richardson never wanted a family, but Lynsey’s about to give him one. And if they have any hope of co-parenting, they need to learn how to co-habituate…and try not to kill or kiss each other in the process.

All-Time Favorite Read

Top Romantic Comedy of 2020

Oh my goodness, Amy Daws does it yet again!!!! One Moment Please is my favorite romantic comedy of the year!!!! It is laugh-out-loud at times, but yet Amy Daws pulls at your heartstrings too!!!!

Lynsey Jones has just finished her thesis, in of all places a hospital cafeteria where they serve killer French Silk Pie. On this particular day, the grumpy doctor, Dr. Josh Richardson, she has noticed glaring at her every time he sees her finally comes over. Nothing good comes from it!!!! However, a completely unexpected meeting later at a bar results in an unforgettable night in more ways than one. Weeks later, she realizes how unforgettable when he informs her that she is pregnant….and it’s his baby!!!

I was literally up almost all night following Lynsey and Josh’s bumpy and oftentimes, funny, road to happiness. Never have two people been so opposite of one another. She is quirky and funny, but so loving and patient with him. He is grumpy, distant, and sometimes, cold. Yet, he is incredibly protective of her and the “Peanut.” It isn’t like he wants to be this way. He yearns to be like Lynsey and live in color and light, instead of the darkness that envelops him. She longs to see him really smile, but she isn’t sure what to do to help him let go of the past. She sees tiny glimpses of the man he once was, but they always disappear almost as soon as she sees them.

Despite the heat and steam in the bedroom, she wants all of him, but will he ever let her in? This my fellow readers is where all the emotions come roaring in. Daws had my heart in her hands…Josh broke my heart at times. She let me see his vulnerable and heart-broken side in the chapters that were told from his POV. I just fell harder for him. I mean his grumpy side could be cute, but this look into his soul, just pulled me in further!

The story was told with Daws’s trademark humor and quirkiness, but she also packed an emotional punch. It’s what makes her writing so special and keeps me coming back for more. My only regret was having to tell the characters that I have come to love good-bye. Hopefully, it won’t be too long when I can return to their world with Dean’s story….fingers crossed!!!
