An All-Time Favorite

A Top Read of 2019

Ilsa Mills-Madden has this habit of dragging me in heart and soul into her books from the very first pages, and I Hate You is no different. It’s a sexy, romantic enemies to lovers romance with amazing characters and will definitely leave you swooning.

Charm and Blaze are complete opposites of each other and don’t have much in common except for one very important thing. They are afraid to take a chance on love.

“Love hurts; I know it does. Love is opening yourself up like a book, letting someone see your secrets with every paragraph and page exposed, knowing that the person you’re showing it to can walk away any minute. And maybe he will. Love only works if you try, if you take a chance.” ~Charm~

Charm is an intelligent, funny, and sassy young woman. Blaze is one of the campus’s football stars. She isn’t the type of girl Blaze would be even interested in, but there is something about her he can’t quite resist. She usually picks safer guys than Blaze. However, there is this pull of attraction between them, and before long they give into their desires. Things seem to be going smoothly until Blaze begins having feelings for her, and he can’t have that, so what does he do? He dumps her very publicly, and he becomes her enemy…until he isn’t. These two definitely have an on and off again type relationship.

On the surface, it appears Blaze is a player. He was at one time, but Charm could change that if he would open his heart to her. Underneath his sex appeal and humor is a vulnerable man. He is so frightened that she will eventually leave him because of the way in which he grew up.

“Sooner or later, she’s going to let go…she’s going to look at me…she’s going to see the real me. She’s going to see the truth.” ~Blaze~

What he doesn’t realize is that she does see him, and she is falling in love with the “real” Blaze.

Charm isn’t without her own issues. She has some real trust issues because of her parents’ marriage and the way she was treated by boys when she was younger.  She has her own set of rules when it comes to her relationships, and it doesn’t involve falling in love…until Blaze begins knocking down the walls she has erected to protect herself.

“There’s a hint of authority in his tone and everything inside of me wants to resist, but he has power over me, something no one else has ever had.” ~Charm~

She and Blaze are going to have to decide whether to take that chance on being rejected when they lay their hearts on the line. I loved these two from the very beginning. Each one challenged and complemented the other. There is angst and miscommunication between them, but Madden-Mills is a master at making those things work in her books. Those elements only add more feeling and emotion to the story itself.

I’m showing my age here, but one of my favorite movies was my Sixteen Candles, and it still is. Jake Ryan represented perfection. Every girl in the 80s wanted a Jake Ryan. He made my heart pitter-patter, and Mills-Madden recreates that feeling for me with all of her men EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!! She will ALWAYS be one of my favorite writers!!!! If you haven’t discovered her yet, you have no clue what a delight you are missing!!!!

Excerpt:

“Need some help?”

I’m on my tiptoes when the question comes, trying to reach a book on the top shelf in the bookstore at the student center.

My heart does a nosedive off a cliff as that familiar gruff voice washes over me, his accent a smooth drawl that’s reminiscent of hot summer nights and slow kisses—kisses we never had…well, except for that one time freshman year.

I ignore him and try to grab the book.

“You’re too short. Let me,” Blaze says, this time closer, his voice soft.

I ease back on my feet and whip around, internally wishing I’d worn something more I hate you and don’t you wish you still had me, but sadly, I’m not in my kickass shoes and itchy dress. Today it’s flat-soled red Converse, black joggers, and a Yankees sweatshirt. I blow at a piece of hair in my face. Shit.

Of course, he looks magnificent in a tight long-sleeved black shirt that clings to his broad chest and tapered jeans molded to those leg muscles. His face is unshaven, the darkness on his jawline adding a broody look.

Curse him and his hotness.

I stare at him a little too long, until I snap out of it.

“I don’t need help,” My voice is strangled as I move to brush past him—forget the textbooks—but he reaches out and takes my elbow.

“Charisma—”

His fingers are a hot brand on my skin—it’s the first time we’ve touched in three months—and I pull away. A tremble starts in my legs. How dare he? It was one thing to see him in a social setting and pretend I was fine, but when we’re face to face without people watching… “Don’t put your hands on me. I’m not your hookup anymore, football player.”

His face reddens, and he drops his arms. “I didn’t mean—” he stops, not finishing as he studies my face.

I wonder what he sees. You know what he sees, Charisma—someone who wasn’t up to his usual standards.

Everything I didn’t say last night rushes out. “Didn’t mean to what? Dump me in the middle of my own sorority’s party in front of all my friends and half of campus? And you know, that’s totally fine. We both knew I wasn’t enough to keep your attention.”

His jaw clenches and he frowns, his brow furrowing. “I didn’t plan for things to happen that way.”

“How did you want to break up with me? Over candlelight? A text would have worked just fine,” I bite out.

The silence builds between us, and he watches me intently, as if trying to figure me out. He starts at my hair and works his way down to my feet, then comes back to my face. Just when I think I might combust from the intensity of his eyes, he looks away.

“What?” I cock my hip. “You look like you want to say something.”

He taps his hand against his leg. Ice-blue eyes, ones I used to stare into and get butterflies from, glitter down at me. “You just can’t handle that ended things, sweetheart.”

“Not your sweetheart.”

“Never were.”

Shit…shit…my heart feels like an anvil just landed on it, heavy and hard, and I can’t breathe for a second at his words, part of me pissed, the other part devastated. I wanted to be his sweetheart, I did, but he…

You’re not my type.

“Thanks for the reminder,” I say quietly, my anger folding away piece by piece and slipping into that horrible self-pity I despise.

He closes his eyes and scrubs his face with those talented hands, strong and big and capable, skillful with a football.

He steps in front of me, much like he did last night, and I tilt my head back to take him in. At my height of five feet, three inches, it’s hard to glare at a guy who towers over you and not look ridiculous, but I manage—until his eyes flicker with lingering emotion.

I dart my eyes around the store, searching for a way out, but I’m stuck between him and a bookshelf. “You’re blocking my path.” I focus on his legs. No sexiness there—well, except for the tight muscles under that denim.

“This is what I know,” he says in a low voice, ignoring my statement. “You told me we were just messing around. You set all the rules. Isn’t that how you operate? So why does me ending things with you even matter?”

“You never asked for more. You could have.” The revealing words fall around us, tinged with hurt, and I want to pull them back.

The silence between us crackles, yet I’m aware of other people around us. There are a few girls on another aisle, and I glance over as one of them pulls out her phone. No doubt she’s taking a picture of him. Part of me retreats, anxious she’ll get me in that photo—a girl who clearly doesn’t belong. He doesn’t notice. Everyone knows who he is, and they’re probably wondering why he’s talking to me.

“No, I didn’t,” he finally says, the words taut as if pulled from him unwillingly. He taps his leg, his tell that he’s anxious or angry. We weren’t together long, but every moment we spent together, I studied him like a wine connoisseur given a glass of rare cabernet. I know what makes him laugh, usually random things that make no sense. I know that groan he makes deep in this throat when he slides inside me, like he’s home. I know the feel of his hand when he cups my face and stares at me, a hesitant expression on his face—

“You can’t even look at me anymore. I wonder why,” he says, his voice a challenge.

Steeling myself, I face those baby blues. “You know why. I wish we’d never met up last fall. I wish you’d never flirted with me. I wish I’d never fucked you that first time in the library—”

“Same page. Same fucking page, Charisma.” And then he’s walking away, broad shoulders swaying as he stalks down the aisle…

A Top 10 Read of 2019

An All-Time Favorite Read

Oh my gosh!!! I just absolutely fell in love with this book and the characters! It is described as the best feel-good romance for the summer, and that is most definitely a true statement! It is one of my top reads of 2019 and one of my all-time favorite reads.

Maddie is an aspiring artist, but she has to find a job in the meantime to support herself. She gets an incredible opportunity to work on a luxury yacht. However, she isn’t expecting the arrogant guests on board, especially her best friend, Nina’s brother, Nick. Nick is dating one of the guests, a model with a nasty attitude. Despite her first contentious meeting with Nick, she finds that the two of them have a lot in common and a friendship grows and maybe possibly much, much more!

The story is told from both Nick and Maddie’s POV. As I have written countless times before, these are my favorite as it gives me a look into the characters’ inner thoughts. Maddie is such a sweetheart, and she doesn’t realize her own self-worth even though she is sassy! She challenges Nick at every turn, and she doesn’t let the other snobby guests trample all over her either. Her talent is amazing. The author doesn’t just let that be an afterthought. She describes her art in such detail, and like, Nick and others, I could see it clearly in my head, and it told a story in and of itself. I just loved watching Maddie come to believe in herself which Nick and other characters, such as Bill, Glo, Siri, and Ivan, helping her along the way.

I, like Maddie, wasn’t such a huge fan of Nick in the beginning. Some might say he waffled a bit when it came to his girlfriend, Tara. He most definitely was blinded by her physical beauty. To be fair, Tara was a master manipulator. However, when he realized the beauty he had in Maddie, he was all-in. How could I not love the fact that he was such a huge support to Maddie?

In a sense, this was a book about Maddie and Nick really discovering who they were. Maddie needed to stoke that passion for art burning inside of her and learn how to let others in. Nick needed to realize who he was…a jet-setter boy toy for Tara, or a man comfortable in his own skin back home with his family. So, I loved their journey of self-discovery!!!!

Now, to the good part, the romance! It was a slow burn of a romance, but I loved it! Maddie and Nick had something quite special and that was due to the friendship they created over the few weeks of their trip. I had butterflies anytime the two of them were together. Their chemistry was amazing! It was a sweet romance with a touch of spice added!

I cannot leave this review without telling you how incredible Julie Caplin’s writing is! Her attention to detail was phenomenal. In all of my reading, I have never come across a writer who literally transported me in my mind to all the lovely settings on this holiday jaunt. She engaged every single sense…sight, taste, hearing, smell, and feelings! This is a book that is to be savored!!!! I think you will agree after reading it!!! As a side note, I have downloaded her other books, and I can’t wait to read more from her!!!!

The Dog-walking Club

The Dog-walking Club

by Liz Hinds

Synopsis:

Every dog walk brings new drama into the lives of these dogs and their people. A supermarket shelf-stacker, a stay-at-home dad, an elderly widow and a freelance photographer sound an unlikely bunch of friends but they have one thing in common: they all walk their dogs in Beauville Park at roughly the same time each morning.

And that’s enough for Angela, bored organiser without a cause, to get them together to form the Dog-walking Club. For Jock the Scottie, Benji the spaniel, Pixie the boxer, Mitzi the poodle and Bassett the … all sorts, walking each day with their friends is a dream come true. And it changes the lives of widowed Sybil who’s spent a lifetime hiding her secret sorrow, hopeless-with-women Jon who’s wandering almost unwittingly into an affair, freelance photographer Jemma who is at every wedding but her own, and Maggi who is frantically trying to save money to visit her family in Australia.

And for long-suffering Angela a nasty shock turns into a new start in disguise for her and her husband – and their love life.

A Top Read of 2019

The Dog-walking Club by Liz Hinds is a gem of a book. It’s a book about friendship and love, not only of the human kind but the canine kind.

I’m a huge dog-lover. I have two beautiful Labrador Retrievers myself…they are my girls, Honey and Lily! So, this book was right up my alley, and I fell in love with all the characters, doggies included.

Angela is a married mother whose children have now left home, and she is struggling to find something to occupy her time. She finds that when Mitzi, the pup, enters her life. She forms a dog-walking with  Maggi, Jemma, Sybil, Jon, and finally, Bernard. Each is from a different walk of life, yet somehow, they form a bond and strong friendship with each other.

What I love is that there isn’t one main character. Each one has a story they are telling the reader. So many writers could get lost doing that, confusing the reader. However, Liz Hinds is extremely talented…she never loses or confuses her readers. In fact, she endeared me to every single one of her characters, especially the pups!!!!

While I adored each and every character, the one that stole the story and held the group together was sweet Sybil, the elderly widow and mom of Jock, the scottie. She was precious! She was each member’s cheerleader and confidante. She was able to listen and really hear the rest of the group, and she was very intuitive. In my opinion, she was the driving force to get each person to go outside of their comfort zone and find happiness.

This is one of my top 10 reads of 2019! There really is no huge overwhelming plot, yet it is fulll of such emotion, both sadness and joy. It is a beautiful testament to friendship and the relationships between humans and dogs.

Must Read of 2019

When it was written in the synopsis that Intersect is “the stunning conclusion to Parallel,” that is not an exaggeration. As was the case with the Parallel, this is the best read of 2019!!!!

Intersect picks up right where Parallel left off, and it takes off with a bang! O’Roark just does a fabulous job of connecting everything from the title to the conclusion. Parallel perfectly depicts what Book 1 is about, parallel lives. And everything “intersects” and comes together flawlessly for the conclusion in Intersect!

“I feel light entering more of the dark space inside of me, as something that’s waited a lifetime to blossom begins to unfurl.” ~Quinn

Quinn and Nick are a race against time to solve the mysteries and finally find the truth about  the lives they have shared. What they discover involves twists and turns they were not expecting, and I certainly wasn’t expecting these twists myself. But, holy cow, they were AWESOME!!!!
The romance is perfectly paced, and these two truly are soulmates destined to be together, despite what others may think. I was so glad to see Quinn finally find her own voice and courage, all with Nick’s steady support.
This is a book unlike any other I have EVER read! It blends mystery, paranormal, and romance into the absolutely PERFECT read! This duet is the MUST READ of 2019!!!!

JerseySix-AmazonFINAL.jpg

How far would you go for revenge?

A hit-and-run accident leaves Jersey Six orphaned and homeless on the streets of Newark, shattering her dreams of school dances, pink nail polish, and a diploma.

Eight years later, a burn victim with amnesia wanders into Jersey’s barely-existent life. She resists his efforts to form a friendship until he reveals knowledge of the person responsible for derailing her future. Through their unusual friendship, she discovers a way to avenge the deaths of her foster parents.

All she has to do is destroy the world’s biggest rock star.

In the ultimate game of sex, lies, and manipulation, can Jersey discover the truth? Or will she be blinded by attraction, deceived by love, and destroyed by her past?

Jersey Six - AN

Francesca M. Healy

Hands down the best book of 2019!!!
Jersey Six has had a very hard life. Unwanted as a baby and then bounced around from foster home to foster home, some worse than others. She found one home where she felt safe and had the potential to be loved, but her foster parents were dead as the result of a hit and run and at 15, she was all alone again. Not wanting to chance getting into another messed up situation, Jersey chose to run and live her life on the streets and on her own terms. 8 years later, a guy who is covered from head to toe with burns and only remembers his first name is Chris, wanders into the run-down gym that Jersey calls home. He is determined to become Jersey’s new friend and tells her he has answers about her past and can help her seek the revenge she thirsts for.
Jersey has a chance meeting with a famous rock star, Ian Cooper, on the streets of New York. He promises to show her the world and agrees to her bringing along her new friend, Chris. With the gym closing down, Jersey and Chris grab at the chance to see more of the world and have a safe place to stay for awhile. Jersey is supposed to keep her plan for revenge at the forefront of her mind but as she spends more time with Ian, she is distracted from what that plan is. Will Jersey get the revenge she seeks and who has her best interests at heart – Chris or Ian?
I am a huge fan of Jewel E. Ann and have been for several years now but this book totally blew me away!!! I thought that I had everything figured out with this one but I was not even close!! I loved this book with all its twists and turns. There are dark moments and there are some sweet, swoony moments and everything in between. I had a major hangover after I finished this story and I just wish I could go back into Jersey’s world for a little longer. I highly recommend this amazing read!!!

Excerpt:

“We ate at the hotel.” Her lips twisted to the side. “Mind if I stick some stuff in my bag for later?”

A tiny wrinkle formed between Ian’s eyes, just below the long sweep of his black bangs. “There will be lots of food available later too. But…” he shrugged, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees “…take whatever you want.”

Jersey glanced over her shoulder at the food and the three other men in the room. She decided to wait a little while before shoving as much as possible into her bag like a free-for-all. “Thanks.” Jersey returned her attention to Ian. “So … you’re a singer. Like … are you a big deal?”

Every word she spoke seemed to feed his level of happiness. “Well …” He rubbed his chin, twisting his lips. “We play music. People like to listen to our music. But no … it’s not a big deal. We’re not saving lives or anything like that.”

She eyed him with suspicion for a few seconds. That smile of his didn’t feel worthy of complete trust. “Um … what exactly do you need me to do? What’s my job? They already took Chris. Will that big, bearded guy come for me too?” Jersey couldn’t remember his name.

“No.” Ian stood, pushing his elbows out from his shoulders, twisting side to side. “Tonight you are just going to watch the concert from backstage. Tomorrow night you’ll sell merchandise.”

“Drugs. You mean drugs, don’t you?”

Ian paused his stretching, letting his arms fall limp to his sides. “Merchandise—T-shirts, posters, keychains, phone cases, hats, guitar pics …”

“To who?”

“Fans.” Ian grinned. “Okay. I might have understated all of this to you … can you name a famous singer? Old or new. Doesn’t matter. Just a famous singer.”

“I had a foster parent who used to listen to Josh Groban.” Jersey gnashed her teeth, still feeling so much anger. Dena wasn’t just a foster parent; she was Jersey’s friend.

“Okay. Well, Josh has sold millions of records, and he’s a huge star in his genre of music. Thousands of people pack venues all over the world to see him sing live in concert. And they sell merchandise of his at those concerts.”

Jersey gazed unblinkingly at Ian as he scratched his jaw.

“Well, I sing a different genre of music, but I, too, travel the world, singing to sold-out concert venues, andI have people who sell my merchandise at these concerts.”

Jersey dropped her bag to her feet and planted her fists on her hips. “Listen, Coop. Stop talking down to me. I’m not an idiot. I know what a concert is. But earlier today you didn’t say what you did or what the job was you were offering. You bought a homeless person a hot dog and offered her a job. Of course, I’m going to think something sketchy might be involved.”

Tipping her chin up, she held her breath to puff out her chest, pretending the recent revelation of Ian Cooper being a famous singer didn’t faze her one bit. Inside, Jersey’s heart hammered into her ribcage, and her mind reeled trying to figure out the day’s events.

“Coop?” His lips twitched into a tiny grin.

“It’s short for Cooper.”

“Clearly.” Ian chuckled. “But my name is Ian. Everyone calls me Ian.”

“I busted the nose and jaw of a kid named Ian. He tried to stick his cock in my ass. I’ll call you Tom, Dick, or Harry, but I’m not calling you Ian because that makes me want to physically harm you.”

Ian’s eyebrows shot up his forehead as his head whipped back a few inches. “Coop it is.”

point, she was his wife.
Something else he can’t explain: he remembers her too.
Quinn wakes each morning remembering new details of the life
they shared—and she’s desperate for the dreams to stop. Because with each one,

that might destroy everything.
Just like it did before.

All-Time Favorite Read

Parallel is described as “a second-chance romance unlike anything you have ever read.” That statement doesn’t even scratch the surface. This is my favorite book so far of 2019!!!!
From the very first page, my mind was completely engaged! Quinn has been having dreams about a man named Nick since she was a child. Her mother did everything she could to explain the strange occurrences away, so Quinn did what she could do forget about it and never mention it. Now, Quinn is engaged to Jeff, and she is only weeks away from saying, “I do.” Something about being at her wedding site brings on a sense of deja vu and a blackout, and it is only the beginning of a journey that will change the course of her life, especially when she realizes Nick isn’t an imaginary figure in her dreams, but he is very much a real person. This, my fellow readers, is where the plot thickens, and boy does it thicken!
Quinn isn’t the only one who has been having dreams. Nick is equally disturbed when he realizes Quinn is the woman in his dreams too. The two of them have such a deep connection, and it tugged at my heart, especially in the flashbacks of Quinn and Nick’s prior lives together.  I felt like both of them were just sort of drifting through their lives, and they only woke up when they found each other. Nick could never commit to anyone, and Quinn gave up her dreams. Now, the future seems to be open for them. However, there are twists and turns throughout the book that will make it hard, if not impossible to get their HEA.
Elizabeth O’Roark’s writing is mesmerizing. She has this uncanny and amazing talent of pulling you heart and soul into the story! I was so sad when the book ended just as I felt like the story of Nick and Quinn was just beginning. It was incredible, and it is unlike anything I have ever read. I cannot wait for the conclusion which releases at the end of the month!!!!

The stunning conclusion to Parallel.

Someone has torn them apart in the past, and she plans to do it again…

As Nick and Quinn piece together the truth about the life they once shared, they discover it was much deeper and darker than they ever imagined. In order to keep history from repeating, Quinn will need to master her unusual gifts—but that means admitting to herself and to Nick why she stopped using them in the first place.

He may never forgive her when he learns the truth, but Quinn is running out of options—because the clock is ticking, and it’s no longer just her life that hangs in the balance.

Drake
They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
What they don’t tell you is that it’s also drenched in regret.
The moment she walked away, a piece of my soul went with her.
My heart hasn’t beat the same since.
I know it won’t until I find her.
I brought her back from the dead once.
Now I need her to return the favor.
Analise
Being broken is never easy.
It’s even harder when it comes at the hands of the one you love.
The weight took my breath, the need to flee became instinctual.
How do you stay when paradise is lost?
How do you breathe when your heart stops beating?
Karma doesn’t come quietly.
Let’s hope absolution is a different story.
The confession is long overdue.

“Sometimes you have to lose yourself to find your way back home.”

I only have one word to describe The Confession by Kate Benson…”INCREDIBLE.”  Benson’s talent truly shines in every page throughout the book!
The Confession picks up right where the previous book, The Sacrifice, ended. Drake and Analise are broken, and it will take everything they have within themselves to find their way back to one another. Along the way, we discover what is going on in the lives of those that love Ana and Drake. Because what has occurred between Ana and Drake affects Chase, Sophie, Jack, and Jenna.
I can always count on Benson to evoke emotions from me, but she truly outdid herself in this one. My heart was broken because her characters have become like family to me. I have been invested in them since I read The Promise years ago. The journey each of them has taken hasn’t always been an easy one, but I have certainly enjoyed taking the ride with them.
The book is told from several POVs with each character having their own story to tell. I find it amazing that each one involves a confession of sorts. While we get a look into each of their lives, it never takes away from the fact that this is Drake and Analise’s story. What they are enduring truly impacts the others and the decisions and views they have on life.
Benson’s writing is so unique in that she is a wonderful storyteller and gives you an incredible book, but her writing is like poetry in the way she writes. She utilizes all sorts of imagery that connects me with the storyline and the characters. The characters do endure obstacles and hurt at times, yet she somehow turns it into such a beautiful story. If you haven’t discovered the gem that is Kate Benson, you really need to read her novels. She never disappoints, and I can’t wait to see what is in store for the Ana, Drake, Sophie, Chase, Jack, Jenna, and even Matt because there were surprises along the way!!!!

Kate Benson was raised in Texas and currently resides in central Florida with her husband and their growing army of fur minions.

She learned to read at the age of four and has been hooked ever since. She credits her passion for literature to her mother, her love of story-telling to her father and her unwavering faith in happily-ever-after’s to her husband, Sean.
Some of her favorite things include rainy days, loud music, superhero movies, hot tea and of course, lazy afternoons with a great book.
To find out more about Kate, her work or to just say hello, she loves hearing from her readers and can be found on social media.
