Island In The Sun

Island in the Sun

by Janice Horton

Synopsis:

When successful jewellery designer Isla Ashton unexpectedly inherits her eccentric Aunt Kate’s Caribbean island, she is obligated to return to the place she associates with heartache and regret. To where she grew up and fell in love with her childhood friend, Leo Fernandez. Fully intent on selling the island and finally putting the past behind her, Isla is soon compelled to put together the pieces of what really happened on a fateful night ten-years before. She begins to believe that in going to prison, Leo hadn’t only been shielding her from the same fate. She also starts to suspect that her late Aunt hadn’t been entirely honest in sending her away under the guise of recriminations. Who had they both been protecting and why?

A Top Read of 2019

Island in the Sun by Janice Horton is one of those rare gems of a book to just savor and enjoy! It’s one of those books that I read each and every word…devouring them! That’s why it is an all-time favorite read and a top read of 2019 for me!

Isla Ashton is a very successful jewellry designer in the UK. She is looking towards the future, having left her painful past on a beautiful island in the Caribbean. However, the past comes roaring back when she discovers she has inherited her aunt’s island, yes an entire island! She plans to sell and get out before confronting her past in the form of her past love, Leo. But, that is easier said than done when she finds her aunt has left her some surprises she never expected.

Both Isla and Leo are adults who have made decisions about their lives based on things that happened in their past. Neither of them are perfect by any means, especially their stubborness. That just made them more human and easier for me to connect with. As much as this book is about them and their journey to find one another again, it’s also a great deal about Kate. What a character this woman was….talk about a flawed character, she was definitely one. There were times I thought she was incredibly selfish. Yet, I somehow came to love her! She was so complicated and so human.

The book was incredibly well-written, and the writer, Janice Horton, is so talented in creating such a beautiful setting. I could see the blue seas, feel the sand between my toes, smell and feel the balmy salty breezes. It’s not very often I come across a writer that can create such a visual setting, one that I find myself completely immersed in.

Make sure to read the section about the writer herself. She is quite intriguing, and I loved how she finds the locales for her books!

This is a perfect book for the spring and summer. It has it all…great characters, a family saga full of secrets and discoveries, and a gorgeous setting. You can’t get much better than that! The epilogue also contains a surprise. So…I’m hoping there might be more to the story that will result in a future book!

All-Time Favorite Enemies to Lovers Read

I’m a HUGE fan of this series and Natasha Madison!!!!

This is probably one of the best enemies to lovers romances I have had the pleasure of reading, and it was a pleasure. It strikes the perfect balance of sexy and sweet!

This is the story of Carter and Erin, and to say Erin isn’t that impressed with Carter is an understatement. She is tasked with being Carter’s PR girl, and it won’t be an easy task to rebrand him. His wild reputation with the ladies is notorious!!!! If she can accomplish this, she will have the job of her dreams, and Carter may finally have the chance to prove himself as a serious actor. So, love isn’t in the cards for these two, but fate may not agree with them.

I adored Erin. She is beautiful, even if she doesn’t realize it. She is smart, driven, doesn’t give up easily, and my goodness, the girl has patience. I probably would have killed Carter! She isn’t immune to his good looks, but she also isn’t too easily swayed by him at first. When she gives her heart, she gives it completely!

Carter was one of those characters I couldn’t help but love even if he drove me nuts sometimes. He would run hot and cold. Thank goodness the book was told from dual POVs, so I came to find out why he acted the way he did. He does a great job of hiding his pain and emptiness behind his cocky attitude and good looks. So, I loved when he began showing his vulnerable side to Erin.

The storyline was great as well. Even though the two fall for each other pretty quickly, it doesn’t feel rushed. I felt like these two truly enjoyed each other’s company and came to respect each other. There are so little surprises along the way that just endeared the book even more to my heart! We also get TWO epilogues!!! This was another winner from Natasha Madison!!!!!

Tinsel (Lark Cove Series) by Devney Perry Review Blast

19 Feb

Sofia Kendrick has always cherished her tiara. As the youngest daughter of a wealthy New York family, she’s lived the life of an American princess. But after two scandalous divorces and a breakup smear her name across the society rags, the shine from her crown has dulled. People call her superficial, even gaudy.

She’s nothing more than tinsel.

Desperate for escape and starving for peace, Sofia heads to Montana for a holiday weekend with her brother. But she doesn’t get the relaxing vacation she planned. Instead, she’s put to work in a bar alongside Dakota Magee—a man who does not want her help. A man who is set on teaching her a few lessons about real life and hard work. But Sofia has a couple of life lessons of her own to teach. Like how to fall in love.

A Top Read of 2019

All I can say is Devney Perry has blown me away yet again. I always say, “This book is my favorite of the series.” So….I’m saying it again. Sofia and Dakota are her most complex characters so far!

Sofia really is “an enigma.” This is what Dakota says, and he is absolutely correct. When I first met her, I wasn’t impressed, much like Dakota wasn’t. However, again like Dakota, it didn’t take me long to see that there was so much more to her than her beauty and superficiality. She appears to be a spoiled, rich princess who is used to getting her own way. Despite her wealth and advantages, she really is a lonely woman who just hasn’t found her purpose in life. When she goes to Montana to find some peace, her life will change. Dakota is a man unlike any man she has ever met. Her life will also take some direction with her family’s help and Dakota’s help.

Dakota couldn’t be more different than Sofia. He didn’t grow up with the advantages that Sofia did. He has worked hard to realize his dreams, and he has a goal in mind, unlike her. Of course, he is gorgeous, but he is also very intelligent, funny, when you get to know him, tenacious, and very loyal to those he loves.

These two are complete opposites, but their pull towards one another is undeniable. What starts out as something casual soon turns into something so much more. Perry always knows how to balance steam and emotion perfectly. Their romance made me swoon, but the differences and obstacles they face in their journey to HEA are very real. Because of that, the romance is told over several months with many bumps along the way. However, they really needed to realize who they were themselves before they could be a couple. I have never seen a character grow as much as Sofia did. She was not the same woman she was at the beginning of the book. I came to love and respect her so much.

One of the things I love about Perry’s books is that I get to see characters from previous books. It’s like catching up with old friends without compromising the story of the new characters. As always, her epilogues are EPIC!!!

Perry never ceases to amaze me. She has grabs ahold of my heartstrings and makes me fall in love with her storytelling and her characters, and this book is no different. It is an all-time favorite for me and a top read of 2019! As always, I will be waiting impatiently for her next novel.

All-Time Favorite Read

Top Read of 2019

Down We’ll Come, Baby is exactly why Carrie Aarons is one of my favorite writers. She has now given us a beautiful, emotional story about second chances.

This isn’t your typical love story. It begins with a break-up, not a couple falling in love. Imogen and Theo fell hopelessly and passionately in love with one another pretty quickly. They each knew they had found their soulmate from the very start.

“It’s not something many people forget, that second in time when their person was the one.”

The problem was these two came from very different backgrounds. Theo lived a pretty simple yet happy life. Imogen came from a very powerful, very rich family. You can imagine that her family wasn’t too keen on their marriage. When you add in a fertility issue with those differences, and you can see that Imogen and Theo are struggling, forgetting  that all-consuming love they had for one another. Their love story is trying to find their way back to one another.

Both characters were very real, and their emotions were very raw. Aarons shed some new light on divorce for me…she made me see why divorce can sometimes be so painful. I know it is, but she shows the emotion in a very different way. Through Theo and Imogen, she illustrated a couple who were two halves of a whole who knew each other’s deepest secrets. They knew what made the other tick. When they separated, all that love and emotion was stripped away. They have to face living a life with only half of their soul. That raw emotion pulled me in so deeply into their romance, especially when I read how they fell in love and their life before the breakdown of their marriage.

Aarons also portrayed two very real people with very real flaws. They were not perfect. Each one of them didn’t fully appreciate and understand the sacrifice they made for one another. Yet, that didn’t take away from me absolutely adoring each of them and wanting them to find their way back to one another.

Aarons has already shown what a versatile writer she is, but she gives us more than just a book, she gives us a story that wraps you up and doesn’t let you go. Everything connected…the characters, the plot, and even the very words she used. The setting is near the shore, and that makes up so much of who Theo is. She weaved all of that into the story seamlessly through her imagery with phrases like: “ships righting themselves, storms, and rough waters.” It was just a beautiful book! It’s because of her amazing storytelling that always keeps me coming back for more!!!

Only a Breath Apart by Katie McGarry Blog Tour with Review, Excerpt, & Giveaway ($50 Amazon Gift Card for 1 winner)

28 Jan

Would you dare to defy destiny? Are our destinies written in stone? Do we become nothing more than the self-fulfilling prophesies of other people’s opinions? Or can we dare to become who we believe we were born to be?

About ONLY A BREATH APART:

Only a Breath Apart by Katie McGarry is young adult fiction at its finest!!!!

Scarlett and Jesse were inseparable as children, until they weren’t. Each of them gave the other exactly what they needed at the time. Their time was an escape from their dark and sad realities. Before high school, Jesse severed that unbreakable bond and his important friendship with Scarlett. Years later, they will need each other more than ever to escape their pasts and forge a happier future, but the question is…will they do that together or apart?

This is a beautiful tale of two people who carry scars, some physical but both deep in their hearts. McGarry gives us a look into their lives and hearts as the story is told from both of their POVs. As they spend time together, they will come to learn each other’s darkest secrets, and those secrets are painful. As is McGarry’s talent, she handles each one with love and sensitivity. This was a couple I loved from the very beginning.

Both Jesse and Scarlett were strong individuals who learned quickly how cruel the world is. Yet, they never gave up in the face of the obstacles they encountered. McGarry also created a cast of secondary characters that were essential to the story, such as Glory. Even those characters were complex and had hidden layers that were discovered throughout the book.

This is truly a book not to be missed. It gives hope for a new, brighter, and better future. McGarry weaved together a spectacular book full of her magical words that engulfed my heart and soul.

EXCERPT:

~SCARLETT~

A scraping of a chair, a tray full of food and I glance over with my practiced smile in welcome. It’s not Camila, Evangeline, or anyone else from the group. It’s green eyes, red hair, a familiar mischievous smile that used to be reserved only for me, and my blood pounds with excitement as if someone lit a sparkler in my chest. Then I frown because I’m not supposed to feel this way. Not with him. Not with anyone.

Jesse Lachlin winks at me as he sits across from me like no time has passed from when we climbed trees together. “What’s up, Tink?”

Another thrill runs through me but then my muscles tighten. Stupid, antiquated reaction belonging to a dead past. “What are you doing here?”

Jesse pops a fry into his mouth, chews, then picks up another as if he has no intention of answering. I scan the cafeteria. Several people are watching us, curious as to why Jesse Lachlin is sitting with me, or is event at lunch, or even at school.

From the lunch line, Camila’s and Evangeline’s eyes are bugging out of their heads.

What is going on? Camila mouths.

I raise my eyebrows to inform her I have no idea. Jesse digs into his corn with his fork and that’s crossing a line. “Maybe you didn’t hear me, but I asked what you’re doing here.”

He lifts his eyes to meet mine and there’s a glimmer in them that causes my lips to flatten. Fantastic. He’s here to make my life a living hell.

“It seems obvious,” he says.

If he remembers anything about me, he should recall I was never known for my patience and that he should be speaking, and speaking soon. “Just answer the question.”

“I’m eating lunch.”

I honest to God groan in frustration. “There’s no room at the inn.”

He surveys the table, takes in the empty seats, my books, and then gives me a good look. A slow look. As if he’s trying to memorize every inch he’s drinking in. My cheeks redden because that somehow feels a little too intimate for lunch. Feels a little too intimate for someone I’m no longer friends with. It feels too intimate if we were friends.

I glance away, but I sense him still staring at me. God help me, I want to stare back.

Perfect Match

by Zoe May

Synopsis:

Yes, he must look like Robert Pattinson and needs to own a multi-million pound business, but there are a couple of other deal breakers, too! So, when a guy comes along who ticks every box, surely there’s got to be a catch?

A laugh-out-loud romantic comedy, perfect for fans of Catherine Bennetto and Rosie Blake!

Christie’s Review

5 ++++ STARS

Perfect Match was one of those special books that ticks all my boxes to make it a 5-star read. It was sweet, funny, and had great characters!!!!

Sophia has become an expert at online dating yet she can’t seem to find the right guy. In fact, she seems to find all the wrong guys. One night she and her friend, Kate, come up with a dating profile on a new site, Dream Dates, just for fun and some alcohol was involved. You can only imagine…just know it involves a lot of laughs. When she gets a message from a guy who seems to be everything she was dreaming of, she isn’t quite sure if he is the real thing. Thus, begins Sophia’s journey to find her “perfect” man, but she will also go on a journey to discover who she really is.

This was a very different romance for me in that the writer, May, kept me guessing. That really isn’t something I see much in the genre…I loved it! She gave me some twists and turns. I always like when a book also has a deeper story as well. Sophia has a deeper story to tell us. She has a perception about how things should be, and she learns things aren’t always what they appear to be. She learns some really important life lessons, and she does it with such a sense of humor. I know you will come to love her as much as I did!!!!

I know I’m leaving her possible love interests out of this review, but they are a huge part of the story. I don’t want to ruin a thing because that part of the story is what made this such a great book!!!!

I love when a book surprises me, and this one certainly did that!!!! You can’t go wrong with this romantic comedy!!!! It’s one of my favorites of 2019!!!

All-Time Favorite Read

Top Read of 2019

Top Read in Sports Romance & Romantic Comedy

What an addictive read!!! I couldn’t put the book down until I had finished the last page, and now I’m sad I had to say good-bye to Peyton and Maddy!!!

Peyton and Maddy were neighbors when they were teenagers, and Maddy was the girlfriend of Peyton’s friend, Eric. Peyton left their small town and didn’t look back. He was a Super Bowl Champion. Maddy stayed and became an elementary school teacher. Years later, Peyton returns. The NFL is on strike, and he comes home as a substitute teacher and high school football coach. Maddy is adjusting to single life since Eric broke up with her to travel. Now, he has moved back in with his grandmother who has Alzheimer’s. Once these two lay eyes on each other again, the sparks FLY!!!!!

I fell in love with the characters and the storyline! Peyton was so much more than I first thought he was. He was self-confident and somewhat cocky, with a hilarious sense of humor. Underneath that sexy exterior, was a somewhat vulnerable man who was afraid to get his heart broken by the woman who held it in the palm of her hands.

“He was a wolf in sheep’s clothing. He could charm the pants off almost anyone when he wanted to, but those who knew the background on his upbringing, like I did, knew he hid shades of darkness behind his smile.”

Maddy was the “girl next door.” She was sweet, loyal, and loving. But, like Peyton, she was complex and had more layers than I thought she did. Underneath that wholesome exterior was a woman who was passionate but yet didn’t feel comfortable sharing that side with anyone.

The storyline just like the characters were complex and multi-layered. The steamy romance between Peyton and Maddy was a big part of the book, but there was another story taking place at the same time. Maddy was a woman who was trying to find her own independence and direction in her own life. She found herself at a crossroads, did she choose security or take a chance on the unknown. Peyton was what she needed to test the waters. He was there for her just like she was there for him when he was a teenager. Peyton was also in unchartered territory. He had never had the feelings for anyone that he was developing for Maddy. At first, he tried to get her out of his mind. Then, he tried to be satisfied with their “no strings” relationship, but he kept finding himself wanting it all with Maddy.

“Trying to keep her out of my mind only etched her deeper onto my soul.”

The book was well-written, and I loved how Miller ended the chapters, giving me a bit of foreshadowing of what was to come. I have not had the opportunity to read Miller before. I’m so glad I’ve discovered this talented writer. He knows how to writer with the perfect balance of steam and romance that gives you “all the feels.” He was able to blend humor, steam, and romance flawlessly to give me another top read of 2019.
