One Last Prayer for the Rays

by Wes Markin

Synopsis

DCI Michael Yorke faces his most harrowing case yet.

When 12-year-old Paul disappears from school, Yorke’s only clue is a pool of animal blood. Fearing the worst, he turns toward the most obvious suspect, recently released local murderer, Thomas Ray.

But as the snow in Salisbury worsens, Ray’s mutilated body is discovered, and Yorke is left with no choice but to journey into the sinister heart of a demented family that has plagued the community for generations. Can he save the boy? Or will the evil he discovers changes him forever?

One Last Prayer for the Rays introducing DCI Michael Yorke.

4 STARS

This book literally starts off with a bang, and it doesn’t let up…not really even at the end. If you are like me, your head will still be spinning long after the last page is finished.

What starts out as a missing school boy turns into so many unexpected twists and turns! It all centers around a twisted, crazy family that illustrates what evil truly is and the dark secrets they are hiding.

DCI Yorke is a complicated character that appears to have many mysterious layers to him. I’m glad this is a series because I think there is a lot more to discover about him. There are characters that are pure evil and ones that are downright crazy! They add so much depth and really drive the story!

If you are looking for a crime thriller to keep you up at night, along with a twist you won’t see coming, then this is a book should not to be missed. Really looking forward to the next one in the series!

14 Feb

From New York Times bestselling author B.J. Daniels, comes STROKE OF LUCK—the stunning first novel in her brand new Western-set romantic suspense Sterling’s Montana Series!

STROKE OF LUCK releases on February 19, 2019. Pre-order your copy today!

STROKE OF LUCK Synopsis:

He’s hoping to bury the past. She’s ready to settle the score.

The Sterling Ranch’s season opening isn’t going so smoothly. With the ranch’s lodge full of guests and a Montana blizzard threatening, Will Sterling needs help—and he needs it fast. So when his childhood friend Poppy Carmichael agrees to lend a hand, he’s grateful for a second chance…and more enticed by the woman she’s become than he cares to admit.

For Poppy, it was supposed to be a retreat full of horse rides and hoedowns—with a side of showing Will what he’s been missing all these years. But as the snow deepens outside, the guests’ suspicion and mistrust turn sinister inside, catching Will and Poppy in the crosshairs.

Weathering the storm in each other’s arms is all too easy for Will and Poppy, but will a confrontation with a killer mean their reunion is short-lived?

New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author B.J. Daniels starts her Sterling’s Ranch series off with a bang in this suspenseful story of romance and revenge.

Excerpt

She had touched the antler lamps and admired the massive ranch kitchen with all its counter space. Even at twelve and a tomboy, she had loved to cook. Back in the lounge, the well-worn leather furniture had looked so comfortable that she hadn’t been able to help herself. She’d plopped down in one of the chairs and was running her hands along the warm smooth leather when Will Sterling had found her. She hadn’t thought anyone was home and she’d been itching to see inside, so having never lacked courage, she’d dared enter without permission.

“What do you think you’re doing?” he’d demanded.

Startled, she’d struggled to get out of the deep comfort of the chair. “I was just…” She had managed to get to her feet and turned. The cutest cowboy she’d ever seen stole any words she might have said. His longish brown hair under his Western hat was dusted with gold as if kissed by the sun. His brown eyes were the color of sweet molasses.

Dressed in a Western shirt, jeans, boots and a hat that looked a little too large for him, she’d fallen in love at that exact instant.

“I need to get moving,” she told Kara. “I promised to get up there in a couple of hours and I have to pack. I also want to pick up some supplies.”

“Supplies? I would think they would have those.”

Poppy chuckled. “Buckshot Brewster is their usual camp cook. Apparently he broke his leg. To Buckshot, cuisine is a slab of beef and a side of beans.”

Kara laughed. “Wait a minute. That cowboy you were telling me about who you met when you were twelve—”

“Will Sterling, the man who just hired me.”

Her friend raised a brow in concern. “But I thought he broke your heart.”

Poppy nodded. “Oh, he did.”

“Wait, I know that look. What are you planning to do?”

She smiled, eyes narrowing. “If it’s true that the way to a man’s heart is his stomach… Well, then, I plan to give him a taste of his own medicine.”

“You wouldn’t.”

Oh, but she would.

Excerpt

“This is my first live game,” I shared. “I’m so excited. Thank you so much for bringing me here.”

He wrapped his arm around my shoulders and curled me into his body before he pressed a kiss to the top of my head. “I wanted to bring you to the game because I knew you’d have a good time, but I had another motive,” he admitted.

I looked up at him, waiting for another explanation.

“Rocco’s looking forward to meeting you.”

My jaw dropped. “He knows about me?”

Lorenzo nodded.

I didn’t say anything for a long time as I processed the information that he’d spoken to his brother about me already. It wasn’t long before I noticed Lorenzo started to worry, so I quickly set his mind at ease.

“Do you think he’ll sign my jersey?” I wondered.

At that, my big guy burst out laughing. A couple hours later, we’d watched warm-ups, celebrated two goals, and were nearing the end of the second period.

But we were down by two.

I was pacing.

I was angry.

I was going to be absolutely devastated if my first experience at a live game ended in a loss.

Just then, I watched as Rocco got slashed on a breakaway toward the net. The ref missed it and I couldn’t control what came over me.

“Get off your knees ref, you’re blowing the game!!” I shouted.

I looked to Lorenzo and found him laughing. “Relax, baby. It’s okay.”

“What?” I shrieked in horror and disbelief. “Are you kidding me?  These guys have missed half a dozen calls.”

“I know, but you’re so worked up. I don’t know how I’m going to be able to wait until we get back to your place to do something about it.”

Thankfully, five minutes later, I’d mellowed out a touch because we scored. There was nothing like a Summits’ goal celebration. By the beginning of the third period, though, I was right back to feeling frustrated. Lorenzo knew it and came up behind me. His hands squeezed my shoulders, trying to relieve some of my tension. It helped a little having him close, but then the ref made another bad call, put the opposing team on the power play, and I lost it.

With each word I yelled, my voice got louder and louder. “I wonder if this ref’s wife knows he’s fucking us!” I shouted.

Lorenzo’s body shook with laughter behind me. He squeezed my shoulders in response and his mouth came to my ear. “Jolie, you’ve got a filthy mouth when you’re pissed.”

A whistle blew and I was shocked to find that a penalty was called on the opposing team. It was about time. We were going to be on our first power play of the game, which was great for us. The Summits were second in the league on the power play, largely due to Rocco’s slapshot. He didn’t have the fastest one in the league, but he was precise. His accuracy was off the charts.

I couldn’t sit, but I couldn’t stand still either.

During the last ten seconds of the power play, Rocco got a killer pass from his defenseman and rocketed a shot to the back of the net. I jumped up in celebration and turned toward Lorenzo. Throwing my arms around his neck, we celebrated the goal along with the rest of the fans in the arena.

“He’s so good,” I gushed. “You’ve got to be so proud of him, boss.”

Grinning huge, Lorenzo replied, “I am.”

About A.K. Evans:

A.K. Evans is a married mother of two boys residing in a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania. After graduating from Lafayette College in 2004 with two degrees (one in English and one in Economics & Business), she pursued a career in the insurance and financial services industry. Not long after, Evans realized the career was not for her. She went on to manage her husband’s performance automotive business and drive the shop race cars for the next thirteen years. While the business afforded her freedoms she wouldn’t necessarily have had in a typical 9-5 job, after eleven years she was no longer receiving personal fulfillment from her chosen career path. Following many discussions, lots of thought, and tons of encouragement, Andrea decided to pursue her dream of becoming a writer.

Between her day job, writing, and homeschooling her two boys, Evans is left with very little free time. When she finds scraps of spare time, Evans enjoys reading, doing yoga, watching NY Rangers hockey, dancing, and vacationing with her family. Andrea, her husband, and her children are currently working on taking road trips to visit all 50 states (though, Alaska and Hawaii might require flights).

Excerpt:

Lexi could feel Caleb’s breath on her lips, and his bunched muscles under her palm were hot and hard. She stared at his mouth. He stared at hers. And she decided that if he wasn’t going to look at her breasts, looking at her mouth like he was starving and she was a grilled BLT—his favorite food in the world—was just fine with her.

Being compared, even in her own head, to a grilled BLT might not seem sexy, but in her mind, it so was. Caleb devoured those sandwiches. He’d do almost anything for one. He made sexy moaning sounds when he first tasted them. And he’d proclaimed that hers were the best he’d ever tasted. Yeah, put that way, along with the schnapps still coating her brain, it was strangely sexy.

“Caleb.”

She watched his pupils dilate and his jaw clench.

Her hand went to the front of his shirt and she bunched it in her fists, watching his eyes. He didn’t try to stop her. Then she tugged, urging him forward.

And he came, the hand next to her hip pressing into the mattress as she tipped her head to one side. Their lips touched. Softly. Briefly. But she felt it all the way to her bones. Heat, want, relief. She suddenly had to have more. She made a little almost-a-sob sound and licked her tongue along his lower lip.

“Lex.”

Her name was more of a groan than a word. It was the sexiest thing she’d ever heard.

“Caleb,”she breathed.

Then the next groan became the sexiest thing she’d ever heard. It was a combination of hunger and resignation, and she felt like he’d just set her nerve endings on fire.

Suddenly, Caleb’s hand came up to cup the back of her head, his fingers diving into her hair. And he took over.

His mouth opened over hers and his tongue stroked deep and hot. Every glide of his tongue felt as though he was running a finger over her clit. Some were firmer, some softer, some longer, some shorter, and her need ratcheted up with each one.

She ran her hands over his chest to his shoulders and up the sides of his neck, loving the hard muscles and the heat under her palms. Then she slid her hands down his sides to the bottom of his shirt. She slipped her hands underneath, moaning as she met hot, bare skin. He sucked in a quick breath and she smiled against his lips, loving having an effect on him.

And suddenly she was on her back and Caleb was moving over her. Her hands slid to his back, the muscles there bunching as he braced himself above her, still kissing her like it was his job. Instinctively, she slid her legs apart and he settled between them. The comforter was between them, but she felt him hard and hot and deliciously heavy against her. The feel of his cock pressed against her made her ache. She’d done that to him. She’d made him hard.

Hallelujah.

Synopsis:

Kitty was not only beautiful but also incredibly intelligent—except when it came to relationships. It seemed if a guy was a loser, corrupt, deadbeat or unavailable, she was completely and utterly attracted to him. She definitely had a “type,” and all of them had been one bad decision after another.

Dallas had trouble of his own. Finding women wasn’t a problem—he could charm the pants off almost anyone—but most of those “pantless” women ended up being a few bananas short of a fruit basket. Not always the best candidates for his sex-without-strings philosophy. He was one date away from ending up a 60 Minutes special.

While both of them were at the top of their game professionally—she a high-powered executive assistant, and he one of the best tattooists in the city—their personal lives had become a dumpster fire.

No one in their right mind would have suggested they join forces to help each other wade through the crazy. Surely that was a recipe for disaster? But without reason, logic or even sanity on their side, they decided to do it anyway.

It was a hot mess primed for a head-on collision.

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

A Top Romantic Comedy of 2019

I can always count on T. Gephart to give me a book that I fall in love with. Car Crash is no different. It has everything I love in a T. Gephart novel…great characters, a great storyline, packed full of romance, spice, and humor!!!

Kitty and Dallas are those special characters full of color and life that just jump off the pages of the book. Kitty is beautiful, sassy, and intelligent. Despite those qualities, her dating life is a disaster. If a loser is anywhere in the vicinity of Kitty, she will find him. Needless to say, she has axed the idea of ever having a serious relationship.

Dallas is sexy, extremely artistic, and much more intelligent than her gives himself credit for. He loves women…all kinds of them…but with no commitment. As much as he thinks he knows  women, he really is clueless.

Dallas and Kitty did have one-night together, and it was spectacular. Somehow, they have remained friends. They come up with the bright idea to help each other out. She will help him decipher women, helping him avoid the crazies. In return, he will help her avoid the losers. What could possibly go wrong with this fail-proof plan, especially when they find it harder and harder to resist each other?

I haven’t had this much fun watching two people fall for one another in a LONG time. There are some really steamy moments as well as some very tender ones as well. They are great as friends which makes them even better as more!!!! Both of them have HUGE personalities. I loved seeing the deeper parts of their personalities which were revealed the more time they spent together.

I was in need of a book that would leave me with a big smile on my face, and T. Gephart definitely did that. I’m not surprised though. She is an incredibly talented writer who gives me an original story with characters I never forget!!!!

She’d tell you all about it, but the statute of limitations hasn’t expired yet. But all those crazy twists and turns have led her to a career she loves—writing romantic comedy.

When she isn’t filling pages with sassy and sexy characters with attitude, she’s living her own reality show in the ‘burbs of Melbourne with her American husband, two teenage children, and her fur child—Woodley.

Imogen

There is no way we can still love and cherish one and other.

When I married Theo Walsh, the rough, bearded townie who worked construction on my family’s summer house, I’d found my happily ever after.

That was before the fighting.
Before the jealousy.
Before the infertility.

We’ll be divorced long before death does us part.

But to secure my place in the family dynasty, there is just one more hoop I have to jump through. And I need him to do it.

Faking the marriage we once thrived in will gut me.
Especially with the secret I’m carrying.

Theo

I would have sacrificed for her until the end of time.

My job.
My home.
My happiness.

I’d given it all up to marry her. That’s how much I loved Imogen Weston, the daughter to one of the world’s richest families.

From the day we met, I’d done nothing but try to live up to the man she expected to be with. And now, I was done.

Sure, I’d complete this one final ask of hers, even if it destroyed me.

But I’ve made her promise the one thing that might save me. She swore that after she got everything she ever wanted, she wouldn’t look back.

I made my wife vow to leave me forever.

All-Time Favorite Read

Top Read of 2019

Down We’ll Come, Baby is exactly why Carrie Aarons is one of my favorite writers. She has now given us a beautiful, emotional story about second chances.

This isn’t your typical love story. It begins with a break-up, not a couple falling in love. Imogen and Theo fell hopelessly and passionately in love with one another pretty quickly. They each knew they had found their soulmate from the very start.

“It’s not something many people forget, that second in time when their person was the one.”

The problem was these two came from very different backgrounds. Theo lived a pretty simple yet happy life. Imogen came from a very powerful, very rich family. You can imagine that her family wasn’t too keen on their marriage. When you add in a fertility issue with those differences, and you can see that Imogen and Theo are struggling, forgetting  that all-consuming love they had for one another. Their love story is trying to find their way back to one another.

Both characters were very real, and their emotions were very raw. Aarons shed some new light on divorce for me…she made me see why divorce can sometimes be so painful. I know it is, but she shows the emotion in a very different way. Through Theo and Imogen, she illustrated a couple who were two halves of a whole who knew each other’s deepest secrets. They knew what made the other tick. When they separated, all that love and emotion was stripped away. They have to face living a life with only half of their soul. That raw emotion pulled me in so deeply into their romance, especially when I read how they fell in love and their life before the breakdown of their marriage.

Aarons also portrayed two very real people with very real flaws. They were not perfect. Each one of them didn’t fully appreciate and understand the sacrifice they made for one another. Yet, that didn’t take away from me absolutely adoring each of them and wanting them to find their way back to one another.

Aarons has already shown what a versatile writer she is, but she gives us more than just a book, she gives us a story that wraps you up and doesn’t let you go. Everything connected…the characters, the plot, and even the very words she used. The setting is near the shore, and that makes up so much of who Theo is. She weaved all of that into the story seamlessly through her imagery with phrases like: “ships righting themselves, storms, and rough waters.” It was just a beautiful book! It’s because of her amazing storytelling that always keeps me coming back for more!!!

Great Cozy Mystery with a delightful cast of characters!!!

Running from Arrows is the next book in the Running Store Mystery Series. Lacy is single, but she has a secret admirer who is sending her flowers. Of course, she is curious. She has several men in mind. Sparks tend to fly when she is around Luke, a police detective in town. That little mystery takes a back seat when several murders occur in town.

The three main characters, Lacy, Stax, and Ruby, are very likeable. Although the book is told from Lacy’s POV, the lady who steals the show is Ruby. She takes her detecting work seriously. Each woman is different. Lacy is quiet and reserved. Stax is sweet and quirky. Ruby is outspoken. However, they each complement each other.

I really enjoyed the mystery itself. There are really several different subplots going on. The murders, the identity of Lacy’s secret admirer, and a mysterious cat burglar. In some books, three mysteries might make the book confusing and hard to follow. That was not the case with this book. Each one will make sense in the end. I like a book to keep me guessing, and this one definitely kept me doing that.

This book had several different components. Of course, the mystery…However, there was romance in the air too. The two balanced each other out perfectly. I also loved that it was a very modern mystery, yet had shades of Agatha Christie, with Ruby taking the lead. This was a great read perfect for Valentine’s Day!

One of Lacy’s beaus has a bow. Unlike Cupid, his arrows kill. There’s more than romance in the air this Valentine’s Day!

Running from Arrows is the fun, twist-filled, romantic cozy mystery romp you’ve been waiting for!

Valentine’s Day is coming up and Lacy is single. If that’s not bad enough, she has a secret admirer. Is it the compassionate, haunted detective, the ruggedly handsome businessman, the suave maître de, the guy in her running group who likes to stare, or maybe someone who’s not on her radar? She’ll find out soon enough because he’s invited her to dinner. Now the question isn’t how long Lacy will remain single but how long she’ll remain alive.

During the Sweetheart Run through the town of Cedar Mill a fellow runner is murdered and a notorious burglar called the Black Cat is found dead with an arrow sticking out of him. Somehow these strange murders are connected to the ladies of Run For It – Lacy the divorcee, Stax the quirky bookseller, and Ruby the old-time mystery novelist. They’re back in a race against time to catch an invisible killer and exonerate an innocent man!

If you love a delicious mystery dripping with romance, humor, and chills – and a Valentine’s Day dinner no reader will ever forget – then buy Running from Arrows now and run it right to the top of your TBR pile!

You’ll want to tell all your friends about Running from Arrows, but whatever you do, DON’T TELL THE SECRET OF THE SECRET ADMIRER.

Running from Arrows is part two in a series but can be read as a stand-alone.

About the Author

T.C. Wescott was born in Missouri but has lived in Oklahoma most of his life. Like pretty much every author who has ever breathed, he is an avid reader. His favorites are classic mysteries from the Golden Age, as well as just before or just after that period (which is widely considered the period between the two World Wars). His first mystery novel, Running from Scissors, was published in July 2018 and will be the first of at least three books in the Running Store Mystery series.

The Christmas Village Mystery series was launched in November with the debut title Slay Bells. The formula for his books is simple – mixing the classic, traditional detective fiction standards with all the trappings of the modern cozy mystery.

Wescott is also (under another name) the author of two award-winning non-fiction books as well as a slew of essays and articles.
