Lady Theodosia Barrington is practically begging to be ruined.

That’s the assumption of the Marquess of Haven after spying Theodosia at a house party given by the Duke of Granby. After his father left him little else but a title and a crumbling estate, Haven is in desperate need of an heiress. Not only is Theodosia rich as Croesus and beautiful, but she’s also a Barrington. Her brother is Leo Murphy, owner of Elysium and the man Haven holds responsible for ruining his father.

Theodosia is the solution to all of Haven’s problems.

Lady Theodosia has long been infatuated with the Earl of Blythe. In an effort to prove her affection and perhaps induce him to offer for her, Theodosia paints a scandalous self-portrait of herself for Blythe as a birthday gift. The small token of affection is incredibly improper. Her behavior reckless.

She regrets gifting the miniature to Blythe immediately. Desperate to save her reputation before it can be destroyed and escape humiliation, Theodosia makes another rash decision. Retrieve the miniature from Blythe’s study.

Except the miniature is gone. And the only thing waiting for her is the Marquess of Haven.

And her own ruination.

“I think about kissing you every moment of every day.” Haven spoke without hesitation, the husky quality of his voice hovering over her limbs before sinking into her chest. “I’ve kissed you a total of four times, and I’m being generous in counting that chaste peck we shared in front of the vicar. I would have kissed you much sounder except I didn’t want Pith to take my head off. If I’m not thinking of the way you taste, or the small sounds you make when I hold you, it is only because I’m asleep. But even then, I dream of you.”

Lady Andromeda Barrington is the most unsuitable young lady in London.

At least in the Duke of Granby’s opinion.

Granby doesn’t care for bastard relatives or tainted pedigrees and Andromeda possesses both. Nor does he like opinionated young ladies who enjoy hurling insults in his direction.

Andromeda is, in short, the most annoying creature he’s ever met.

When she arrives, uninvited, to a house party given at his estate, Granby can’t decide whether to kiss Andromeda senseless or send her packing.

Andromeda is the victim of infatuation and bad luck.

The infatuation is that of her sister for the Earl of Blythe, but the misfortune belongs solely to Andromeda after she is forced to attend a house party hosted by the Duke of Granby. She and the duke are previously, unpleasantly, acquainted. The entire party is bound to be awkward, and their mutual dislike difficult to hide. Her only recourse is to avoid the giant block of ice masquerading as a duke. Thankfully, Granby’s estate is enormous.

But instead of mutual hostility upon arriving, Romy is greeted with unexpected attraction. Insults turn into flirtation. Heated discussions become lingering kisses.

Her heart is ruined. Granby may not even have one.

And the duke has already chosen another young lady to be his duchess.

The Design of Dukes is a steamy historical romance with a guaranteed happily ever after and next in the series The Beautiful Barringtons.

“Were you sketching Granby’s backside?” Blythe laughed out from between his gloved fingers, clearly finding the situation amusing. “I suppose there’s a first time for everything.”

Heat stung her cheeks at Blythe’s scandalous statement. “I was absolutely not, my lord.”

“Could you find nothing else more worthy of your talent?” Blythe’s tone turned flirtatious. “Mine, perhaps?” Blythe turned sideways and wiggled his hips.

Blythe was a shameless rogue. Though Romy had to admit upon inspection, Blythe’s backside, like the rest of him, was rather magnificent.

Granby’s eyes fluttered shut, head shaking as if Blythe continuously tried his limited patience, before once again fixing Romy with a frosty glare.

“I was sketching Miss Cummings’s costume,” Romy waved in the direction of the young lady who was now wandering off, oblivious to the fact her gown had been the cause of Romy’s current situation.

“And eavesdropping.” Granby’s snarl met her ears.

“Who knows what else you were sketching,” Blythe said mischievously. “I’d like to take a look.”

She immediately hid her notebook within the folds of her skirts. “I’m not certain,” Romy snapped back, embarrassed to having been caught looking at Granby and having Blythe take notice, “there was anything of merit for me to overhear. If you must know—”

“Oh, I must.” Granby drawled.

“If you must know,” she imitated in a mockery of Granby, “I was struck dumb at the sight of the duke’s coat.”

“My coat?” The dark eyes narrowed blasting her with dislike.

“Yes, Your Grace.” She nodded as if truly at odds with what she was about to relay to him. “I noticed the length is incorrect. Two inches longer would be much more in line with what is deemed fashionable.”

Granby’s massive shoulders stiffened. One gloved hand tugged at his collar though she hadn’t said a word about his cravat. Yet.

“She may have a point, Gran,” Blythe added helpfully looking between his coat and Granby’s. “I think I mentioned—”

“I do not,” Granby interrupted Blythe, all his attention firmly on Romy, “take fashion advice from a woman who has the poor sense to come to a party dressed as a shrub.”

Romy sucked in her breath. Her costume was lovely. She was a dryad. A tree nymph. It was true that very few saw the vision of her costume today, guessing somewhat correctly she was a tree of some sort but she certainly, emphatically, did not look like a shrub. Granby himself was a mountain masquerading as a duke.

“I am a tree nymph, Your Grace.” Romy stated with determination.

“I beg to differ.” The dark eyes ran down her body. “You look like a shrub. All you need is a bit of red and I’d mistake you for a holly.”

5 STARS

Along Came a Soldier by Brenda Davies has all the ingredients that make a book one of my favorites…romance, history, and mystery!!! I was completely enthralled from the very beginning!

Charity and Jethro meet by chance, not knowing their families have been enemies. However, when the heart is involved, things like old grudges don’t matter too much. Charity is a woman caught in a time where women’s opinions didn’t matter, and she was to obey her family. So, she is torn, but when Jethro is accused of murder, the decision is made for her. There is no way she can let him go to prison for a murder he didn’t commit.

Charity’s brother, Joe, the town bonesetter, Grace, and her friend, William, join together to prove his innocence. They will discover that their small village is full of deadly secrets. This crew of sleuths could have their very own series!!!

I know when I have discovered a talented writer when she makes me actually have some pity for the person who is supposed to be the evil one. I would never condone what he did, but I could understand what put him in that state of mind.

The forbidden romance was a part of the novel, but not the entirety of it. However, it is a romance that is both sweet and swoonworthy. Charity shows Jethro that she loves him for the person he is on the inside, not the perception of others. He shows her how to begin living her own life just for her which was not the norm in the 1820s.

If you are looking for a book that crosses several genres with elements of suspense, mystery, and some paranormal aspects, you can’t go wrong with this book. Brenda Davies blends all of them perfectly to make a fantastic read!!!!!

The Raided Heart

The Raided Heart (The Historic Books #1)

Synopsis:

Meg Mathers, the headstrong youngest sibling of a reiving family on the English-Scottish border, is determined to remain at her childhood home, caring for the land and village she’s grown up with. When an accident brings her a broken ankle and six weeks in the resentful company of ambitious and angry young reiver Will Hetherington, attraction starts to build. Both begin to realise they might have met their match, and the love of their lives, but 15th century border living is not that simple, as Meg soon finds herself betrothed to the weakling son of a tyrannical neighbour, Alexander Gray. When tragedy strikes, can Meg and Will find their way back to each other, and can Will finally take his own personal revenge on Gray?

Christie’s Review

The Raided Heart is a beautiful and emotional historical saga!

Meg is the youngest child of a reiving family. She has taken the place as the matriarch since her mother’s death. She is a strong woman who is protective of her family and the land she has grown up on. One night when her brothers and their band of reivers return, Meg sprains her ankle, and her brothers make young Will care for her since they blame him for the accident.

Will is pretty resentful and doesn’t want to be stuck taking care of a woman. However, as the two spend more time together, this unlikely pair fall deeply in love. That happiness doesn’t last long as Meg is promised to marry Alexander Gray, a neighbor. This is when the novel gets very emotional. Gray is a terrible person, and I’m putting that mildly! He epitomizes the meaning of a villian.

Meg has to endure a great deal living with him. Despite their separation, Meg and Will’s love doesn’t fade. It somehow grows stronger. They are in a race to find a way to find their HEA despite the danger that may pose to both of them.

The book is a beautiful love story yet it is also an adventure. The author goes into detail with the raids and really puts the reader into the story. It is also filled with intrigue because Gray and Will share a connection because of their past.

If you are looking for a book that is a breath-taking romance and adventure, you can’t go wrong with this historical fiction book! Looking forward to more in the series!

Until We Meet Again

by Rosemary Goodacre

About the Book:

The Great War drove them apart – but love kept them together

Summer 1914: Shy young woman, Amy Fletcher, lives a quiet life in Sussex. An office worker, she lives at home, along with her parents and spirited younger brother, Bertie. But her life is transformed when she meets handsome young man, Edmond Derwent, son of one of the wealthiest families in the small town of Larchbury, and student at Cambridge University.

The couple are falling deeply in love when war breaks out and, eager to do his duty for England, Edmond signs up as an officer. The couple plan to be wed, eager to start a new life together – but their happiness is short-lived when Edmond is sent to Flanders to lead his men into battle. Amy trains as a VAD nurse and is soon sent to France, where she sees the true horror of war inflicted on the brave young men sent to fight.

Separated by war, Edmond and Amy share their feelings through emotional letters sent from the front line. But when Edmond is critically wounded at Ypres, their love faces the biggest test of all – can their love stay strong while the world around them is crumbling?

A romantic, emotional saga set in WW1 – readers of Rosie Goodwin, Katie Flynn and Val Wood will be captivated by this story of love.

Christie’s Review

4 STARS

Until We Meet Again is a perfect combination of history, family saga, and romance!

The book takes place over approximately three years. It opens in 1914 and ends in 1917. Amy is a shy girl just on the cusp of becoming a woman and lives with her parents and brother. She is living a pretty normal life, with the exception of being involved with a group of women who are fighting for the right to vote, something her parents do not support.

Edmond is the son of one of the wealthiest families in the area, and now he is a student at Cambridge University. The two of them are from two totally different socio-economic classes, but as the saying goes, “the heart wants what it wants.”

Amy knows of Edmond, really everyone does because of his family, but things change for them when they meet one weekend when she travels with her mother.  They greatly enjoyed each other’s company, and it isn’t long that they are spending a lot of time together. It becomes apparent they are soulmates, despite the fact that Edmond’s mother doesn’t approve. They have their lives planned out until WWI dawns.

They are soon separated. He goes off to war, and she begins training as a nurse with the Voluntary Aid Detachment. They keep their love alive through their sweet, emotional letters to one another.

Both Amy and Edmond are such incredibly special characters. They both epitomize strength, perseverance, and courage. All those characteristics helped them overcome all the obstacles they faced from disapproving parents to the war itself. I loved reading the letters they wrote to one another.

This was a very well-written book. The author did a wonderful job of giving readers a first look at the devastation of war without being bogged down with just the horrible things. I’m glad to see that this isn’t the end of Amy’s and Edmond’s story. They are getting another book, and I can’t wait to read it.

The Beltane Choice (The Celtic Fervour #1)

Synopsis

AD 71 Northern Roman Britain
Lorcan of the Brigantes knows that unity of the northern tribes is essential when the Ancient Roman legions advance northwards to Brigantia. Yet, everything comes at a price. Using his captive, Nara, as a political bargain with the Selgovae comes with impossible stipulations. Battle at Whorl – Iron Age tribes against the Romans – is inevitable.

Will Nara have her Beltane choice?

The adventures of the Garrigill Clan begin…

Christie’s Review

4 STARS

The Beltane Choice is not only a sweeping story of love between two sworn enemies but also a history lesson as well.

Nara is trying to escape a wild boar when she encounters Lorcan of Brigantes. He comes to her aid, but then she soon finds herself his prisoner. Lorcan is immediately under her spell; however, he also sees that she will be a great political asset for him as well. As she spends more time with him, he soon discovers that she means much more to him. His biggest war may not be on the battlefield but in his own heart.

Nara is a woman before her time. She is strong and independent. Even if her own father doesn’t love her, she soon finds a home with Lorcan’s tribe. She is also facing an internal battle. She isn’t sure who to trust, her own family or the new family she has come to love.

I’m a huge fan of history and romance, so this book was right up my alley. However, the author made this book stand out in the historical romance/fiction genre. It’s magical yet very realistic. I don’t know much about this period in history, and I felt like I learned a great deal. One of my favorite parts of the book was the author’s notes in the back. She gives her readers a great background of that period. This is a must read for historical fiction/romance fans.

Dear Jane

Dear Jane

by Allie Cresswell

Synopsis:

The final instalment of the Highbury trilogy, Dear Jane recounts events hinted at but never actually described in Jane Austen’s Emma; the formative childhood years of Jane Fairfax and Frank Churchill, their meeting in Weymouth and the agony of their secret engagement.

Orphaned Jane seems likely to be brought up in parochial Highbury until adoption by her papa’s old friend Colonel Campbell opens to her all the excitement and opportunities of London. Frank Weston is also transplanted from Highbury, adopted as heir to the wealthy Churchills and taken to their drear and inhospitable Yorkshire estate. Readers of Emma will be familiar with the conclusion of Jane and Frank’s story, but Dear Jane pulls back the veil which Jane Austen drew over its remainder.

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

Dear Jane is the final book in the Highbury trilogy, and it might just be my favorite!

This is Jane Fairfax’s and Frank Churchill’s journey to their HEA and what a journey it is!!!! Both Jane and Frank are being raised by people who aren’t their parents. I loved that Cresswell began their stories when they were just children. I felt like I really got to know them before they met each other. It was a romance but also somewhat of a family saga which really drew me into their story.

I love the way Cresswell writes…yes, this is based on Emma, but as always, she makes it her very own. In other words, she doesn’t take away from Jane Austen, but she weaves her own magic!

If you are a fan of Jane Austen, you really need to give this series a try! I don’t think you will be disappointed. If you are like me, you will find yourself right there with all the characters yourself!!!

The Cornish Lady

by Nicola Pryce

Synopsis

Cornwall:1796

Educated, beautiful and the daughter of a prosperous merchant, Angelica Lilly has been invited to spend the summer in high society. Her father’s wealth is opening doors, and attracting marriage proposals, but Angelica still feels like an imposter among the aristocrats of Cornwall.

When her brother returns home, ill and under the influence of a dangerous man, Angelica’s loyalties are tested to the limit. Her one hope lies with coachman Henry Trevelyan, a softly spoken, educated man with kind eyes. But when Henry seemingly betrays Angelica, she has no one to turn to. Who is Henry, and what does he want? And can Angelica save her brother from a terrible plot that threatens to ruin her entire family?

Christie’s Review

4 STARS

The Cornish Lady was an enjoyable historical fiction/romance with hints of mystery and intrigue!

Angelica is preparing to spend her summer in high society and a possible marriage to a lord, but sometimes she doesn’t feel like she really fits in. She is independent and educated. Needless to say, she is a woman way ahead of her time.

Her brother unexpectedly arrives home, and she is shocked at his appearance. She knows something sinister is going on, especially when she sees the man who is with him. This is where the mystery begins. She meets Henry Trevelyan, who comes to her rescue when she finds herself in a very dangerous situation. As the two grow closer, she begins developing strong feelings for him. Yet, he may be the biggest mystery of all. The two of them are great together and are evenly matched. He respects her and not many men at the time would.

The book is well-written. The cast of characters is quite lengthy, but a guide is at the front of the book to help you. The settings were gorgeous, and the author described them so well that I could picture myself there with the characters. If you like historical fiction/romance, give this one a try!

4.5 STARS

The Uncompromising Lord Flint is a great addition to an already great series!!!! It is the story of romance between two very unlikely people.

Lady Jessamine is a prisoner who is accused of treason and is on her way back to England to face them. Flint is the man who in charge of bringing her back. All the evidence points to her guilt, but things aren’t always how they appear as Flint will soon discover.

One of my favorite things about Virginia Heath are her characters, and I loved both Jessamine and Flint. Both are fiery and have been burned in the past, so they have some trust issues. However, they can’t stop the attraction that they feel towards one another. Both will do what they can to fight it, but thankfully, they won’t succeed on that point.

Heath always creates a female lead that is strong, intelligent, and beautiful in a time period in which women weren’t seen more than a possession by men. Jessamine is no different…she isn’t only a survivor but a fighter! Flint, like other male leads in Heath’s novels, respect the women they love and treat them as partners. I have come to love that about her writing.

The storyline is full of adventure and romance that sizzles with chemistry. The setting for this one is a bit different. Much of it is on a ship and not in places like grand homes or ballrooms. That makes it unique. I also have come to appreciate the way in which Heath gives readers both POVs, but it isn’t done in alternating chapters. She is one of those rare writers who can flawlessly seam that into the storyline itself.

If you are looking for a romance with fiery characters, sizzling chemistry, and grand adventure, look no further than this book!

When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Despite that, it still takes her forever to fall asleep.

The Makings of a Lady

The Makings of a Lady

by Catherine Tinley

Synopsis

Be calm, she thought.
Be gracious. Be twenty-two.

Lady Olivia Fanton is eager to prove she’s no longer a child. However, just as she thinks she’s found a suitable match in the suave Mr Manning, charismatic Captain Jem Ford walks back into her life, bringing with him all the embarrassment of her infatuation four years before! She’s determined to appear mature, distant, friendly. But does she dare hope he’ll notice her as the lady she’s become?

Christie’s Review

 4 STARS

The Makings of a Lady gave me two things I love: a historical romance and a somewhat “friends to more” romance.

Lady Olivia has always had feelings for Jem Ford. The book opens with her hoping for a marriage proposal from him, but she doesn’t get that. She gets the news that he is leaving for Australia. Her hopes are dashed. However, she doesn’t marry in the years that pass, and she feels unsettled. She is too old to be considered a girl, yet in those times, she was also not allowed to be a woman. Her brothers have families, and she has no nothing in her life to challenge her. This is why I liked Olivia…she wanted to be her own person, not just someone’s niece, aunt, sister-in-law, or sister. She wanted her own identity. What an independent thinking woman well ahead of her time.

She won’t be bored for long because Jem has returned, and all her feelings for him return as well. But, she is different, more mature. She decides she will be friendly to him, but she won’t ever let her true feelings show, especially now that she has a man that may be the right one for her, Mr. Manning. She can try to convince herself of that. Things get complicated as Jem has always harbored feelings for her, and he left to make something of his life, maybe even to make himself worthy for her.

The romance is sweet and told from both points of view, so readers get a little insight into what the other is thinking, even if Olivia and Jem are clueless….which made things a bit frustrating with all their miscommunications.

I highly recommend reading this book and the series if you love historical novels with strong women and men who are gallant heroes and a bit of humor thrown in.
