Christie’s Review

4.5 STARS

The Wife Who Knew Too Much by Michele Campbell was addictive from the opening pages!!!

Let me begin by saying, I loved the way Campbell opened the book…in the first Mrs. Ford’s, Nina’s, voice. She gave me a hook to keep me reading while also giving me the background that sets the stage for the entire book.

Nina has just discovered her husband, Connor, is having an affair. She plans to confront him, but at the some point, her body is found in the family pool. Was it an accident, suicide, or something more sinister?

Connor is indeed having an affair with the other main character, Tabitha. They were involved as teens years earlier and have recently reconnected. He planned on leaving Nina, but he wanted to find a way to leave with at least some money, and his job at Nina’s company. Nina had a pretty ironclad prenup. With Nina’s death, he has everything he wants, including Tabitha. It isn’t long before she becomes the next Mrs. Ford.

Tabitha was expecting a new start with Connor, but she finds that Nina is still very much a part of their lives. Secrets and betrayals soon surface as Tabitha begins to wonder if Nina’s death was murder. And what, if any part, did Connor play in it?

The twists to the mystery just kept coming. I guessed one of them, but Campbell threw me for a loop with the second twist. I didn’t see that one coming!

Campbell’s characters were a huge part of why the book was so good. They were multi-layered and very complex. None of them were saints, but Tabitha was the one character I actually had some empathy for. I thought at times she had too little thought for herself and let her love for Connor blind her to his faults.

Connor didn’t have a great deal of redeeming qualities. He was selfish and self-centered, and let his love for money color how he looked at life. I felt like he didn’t really appreciate Tabitha or Nina. Despite his flaws, I believed he felt something for Tabitha that he didn’t feel for anyone else. But, did his flaws make him a murderer? That was a question I kept asking myself throughout the book.

Another great thing about the book was how Campbell made Nina a very important character despite her death in the beginning of the book. She, like all the other characters, was very complex.

Michele Campbell is a new writer to me. Her books had been on my list to read, and I am so glad I finally read one of her books. I’m looking forward to reading more from her.

New Review: The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins

The Wife Upstairs

by Rachel Hawkins

About the Book:

A delicious twist on a Gothic classic, The Wife Upstairs pairs Southern charm with atmospheric domestic suspense, perfect for fans of B.A. Paris and Megan Miranda.

Meet Jane. Newly arrived to Birmingham, Alabama, Jane is a broke dog-walker in Thornfield Estates––a gated community full of McMansions, shiny SUVs, and bored housewives. The kind of place where no one will notice if Jane lifts the discarded tchotchkes and jewelry off the side tables of her well-heeled clients. Where no one will think to ask if Jane is her real name.

But her luck changes when she meets Eddie Rochester. Recently widowed, Eddie is Thornfield Estates’ most mysterious resident. His wife, Bea, drowned in a boating accident with her best friend, their bodies lost to the deep. Jane can’t help but see an opportunity in Eddie––not only is he rich, brooding, and handsome, he could also offer her the kind of protection she’s always yearned for.

Yet as Jane and Eddie fall for each other, Jane is increasingly haunted by the legend of Bea, an ambitious beauty with a rags-to-riches origin story, who launched a wildly successful southern lifestyle brand. How can she, plain Jane, ever measure up? And can she win Eddie’s heart before her past––or his––catches up to her?

With delicious suspense, incisive wit, and a fresh, feminist sensibility, The Wife Upstairs flips the script on a timeless tale of forbidden romance, ill-advised attraction, and a wife who just won’t stay buried. In this vivid reimagining of one of literature’s most twisted love triangles, which Mrs. Rochester will get her happy ending?

My Review

What a delicious, twisty suspense!

I was intrigued when I saw it was a reimagining of Jane Eyre. I was also a bit nervous too….Jane Eyre is one of my all-time reads. Not all twists on classics are good things, but this one was! It had it all…secrets, lies, and betrayals. All the ingredients that make suspense so good!

Jane has a past that she wants to not just overcome but escape. She sees her opportunity in Eddie Rochester. He is newly widowed after his wife drowned a year before with her best friend, even though their bodies were never found. He could give her the things she has always dreamed of. What she doesn’t expect is that Eddie has secrets of his own that might just be more dangerous than she could imagine.

I enjoyed the way Hawkins wrote the storyline. She keeps you guessing, and I wasn’t quite sure who the enemy was. Of course, I was expecting a twist as it is based on Jane Eyre. However, I didn’t expect the twist she actually gave me! WOW!!!!

If you are looking for characters that you are just going to love, don’t go looking for them in this book. You won’t get them! However, who is to say, you can’t love a good book with characters you don’t like? Rachel Hawkins taught me that you could! She still gave me characters that were full of depth and complexities!

If you have a chance, you should also listen to the book. I did both, and the narrators did a phenomenal job of pulling you right into the story!

Hawkins has already proven herself as a great YA author, and I’m glad to say that I think she has a bright future writing adult books as well!!!!!

New Review: The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires

by Grady Hendrix

About the Book:

The New York Times Best Seller
#1 April LibraryReads Pick
April Indie Next Pick

Goodreads Big Book of Spring

Steel Magnolias
meets Dracula in this ’90s-set horror novel about a women’s book club that must do battle with a mysterious newcomer to their small Southern town, perfect for murderinos and fans of Stephen King.

Patricia Campbell’s life has never felt smaller. Her husband is a workaholic, her teenage kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she’s always a step behind on her endless to-do list. The only thing keeping her sane is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime. At these meetings they’re as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are about their own families.

One evening after book club, Patricia is viciously attacked by an elderly neighbor, bringing the neighbor’s handsome nephew, James Harris, into her life. James is well traveled and well read, and he makes Patricia feel things she hasn’t felt in years. But when children on the other side of town go missing, their deaths written off by local police, Patricia has reason to believe James Harris is more of a Bundy than a Brad Pitt. The real problem? James is a monster of a different kind—and Patricia has already invited him in.

Little by little, James will insinuate himself into Patricia’s life and try to take everything she took for granted—including the book club—but she won’t surrender without a fight in this blood-soaked tale of neighborly kindness gone wrong.

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

What a fantastic book…unlike anything I have read in a while!!!!

The synopsis sums the book up, “Steel Magnolias meets Dracula.” It was the selection for my book club’s October read, and it couldn’t have been more perfect for Halloween.

Our main character, Patricia, has her plate full. Her husband’s work seems to be more important than his family life. Her children are now teenagers, and she is the full-time caretaker of her mother-in-law who is suffering from some type of dementia. The one thing she looks forward to is her book club.

Her life completely changes when she is attacked one night by her neighbor, and her nephew becomes embroiled in her life, more and more every day. She feels a pull toward him but soon begins to realize he may not be who he claims to be…he may be something much more dangerous. She will have to rely on her friends in the book club to save herself and those she loves.

There were so many things I loved about this book! First, I’m a Charleston girl myself so I love reading anything that takes place in Charleston. The author really captured what old Mt. Pleasant was like in the 90s, changing yet charming.

Second, I liked the little twist on the vampire genre. James is definitely not your typical vampire. Third, the bond these women share highlights everything that is so special in female relationships. Hendrix amazed me with his insight into what makes female relationships so incredibly special.

In addition, I loved the characters. Patricia is the main character, but her fellow book club women are complex characters in their own right. They each add their own strengths to the story! When these ladies join forces, they are formidable opponents.

Most importantly, the author touches on the important issue of race and socio-economic differences. Even though the story takes place in the 90s, these are still relevant today.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking there aren’t some really creepy parts to this book….there are!!!! It is a book about a vampire, and James might be charming, but he is a monster!

Grady Hendrix gave his readers a fantastic read. He combined so many elements, such as horror and yes, even humor. There were some parts that were quite funny. He also added in important social issues. Each element was blended flawlessly together without overpowering each other. He has a new fan in me. In fact, I have downloaded several of his other books as well!

New Review: Murder at the Gorge (The Exham-On-Sea Murder Mysteries #7) by Frances Evesham

About the Book:

A joke? A prank? Or something more sinister?

When the Exham-on-Sea residents are targeted by anonymous emails containing apparently harmless nursery rhymes, no one knows whether to laugh or shudder until an unexplained death touches the town.

Libby Forest, baker, chocolatier and Exham’s very own resident private investigator, alongside her partner Max Ramshore, set out to solve the puzzle before more people die. But when Max’s ex-wife arrives on the scene, ahead of Max and Libby’s long-awaited nuptials, things go from bad to worse.

With the town and their relationship under threat, Max and Libby need the help of the Exham History Society if they’re going to find the nursery rhyme killer in time.

Murder at the Gorge is the seventh in a series of Exham-on-Sea Murder Mysteries set at the small English seaside town full of quirky characters, sea air, and gossip.

If you love Agatha Christie-style mysteries, cosy crime, clever dogs and cake, then you’ll love these intriguing whodunnits.

Well-written and delightful cozy mystery/romance!

Libby has a lot going on….the new cafe she is a part of is opening, and most importantly, she is gearing up to marry her partner, Max, in the next few weeks. And, Christmas is right around the corner too. So, the last thing she and Max need to be involved in is a murder mystery, but that is exactly what they get!

Several of the citizens have received emails from an unknown source that are nursery rhymes. At first, they seem to be harmless until Max discovers the body of a woman who had received one. Now, they are taking on a whole new meaning. If that wasn’t enough, Max’s ex-wife comes back into his life needing his help. She is also receiving threatening emails. He and Libby think it all has to be related, but they have to find the link that connects it all.

The mystery is not as cut and dry as it seems. It involves digging into the history of several of the residents and the town itself. By doing that, readers get to know more about the characters. There are surprises along the way, and I had no idea who the killer would turn out to be…which I love in my mysteries.

If you like your mysteries to keep you guessing, along with some really great characters and a lovely setting, you can’t go wrong with this one!

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

I was already a huge fan of Jenn and Cletus, and this book made me love them even more!!!!

This book is best understood after reading Book 3 in the series, Beard Science. I loved catching up with all the characters in Green Valley. Jenn and Cletus should be enjoying their time together, but it seems like one thing or another is keeping them apart, and not just her mother this time. It is a busy time of year, and now the couple find themselves embroiled in a mystery. It seems like weird things are happening in town, and it starts with the death of 61 chickens. Someone is sabotaging people in town, and Jenn and Cletus are determined to find the guilty party.

One of my favorite parts of the book was seeing Jenn really come into her own. She is learning to become her own person, and it was great seeing her relationship with her mother change….even Cletus’s relationship with her mother changes. The mysteries seem to have a silver lining in that sense. The two still share their electric chemistry. It was wonderful catching up with them after their HEA.

Reid has again put herself in her own genre. It’s part mystery and part romance with lots of spice added in. I am so excited for this series, and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!!!!

A Top Read of 2020

All-Time Favorite Read

Oh my gosh!!!! This is the best book of the series so far!!!!

So, Ronan seems like he has it all. That is what I thought as I read the earlier books in the series. He is loved by all and loves to be surrounded by others! Boy, Rina Kent sure had me fooled. Never did I even dream what was going on behind that sexy and happy facade he presented to others. With his arranged marriage to Teal, all that pretense starts to fall away. As the title suggests, he can be a “vicious prince.” Teal seems to bring that out in him when she refuses to go back on the marriage contract! What begins as a sensuous and emotional game of cat and mouse becomes so much more!! I wasn’t sure who would be the winner…Ronan or Teal.

Kent really threw me for a loop with this one. My heart broke…I cried. I was angry. Not only were my emotions raw, but she somehow weaved in a mystery I wasn’t expecting! Ahhh…it was so good! I have loved all her characters, and it’s because of their flaws that they are so dear to me. Ronan and Teal are my favorite so far. They are so complicated and complex.

From the beginning, Teal makes it well-known that she has ulterior motives for agreeing to marry Ronan. They are from two completely different worlds. He was born into wealth and privilege. She was lucky to be rescued and brought into that world yet she never can forget her traumatic origins. She never cared about fitting in.

“When girls did everything to fit in, she just followed what she liked. She never once laughed or smiled because it was expected.”

“If Marquis de Sade and Snow White had an offspring, it’d be her.”

To say Teal has suffered would be the understatement of the decade. She has learned to just go through the motions of life without having any emotions. This is where the magic that is Ronan comes in. He is the lightness to her darkness. He makes her feel things which is both good and bad for her. He could be the prince she never saw coming.

While Ronan thinks he and Teal have nothing in common, he comes to realize they actually have more in common than he ever imagined. They just deal with their traumas in completely different ways. Teal has tried to be invisible and Ronan has surrounded himself with others.

“It’s a commitment I made to myself when I decided to never be alone. Not for one second. Not even for a blink.”

This is one of those books I devour, but I have to stop and let it seep into my soul before I can ever sit down and write a review. The chemistry between them was electric, but it was all their own…just like their road to love was! It was the right one for Teal and Ronan. Rina Kent continues to amaze me. She can take something so dark and make it into something so beautiful. I think Teal not only accurately describes who Ronan is, but she accurately describes Rina’s Kent’s writing:

“You’re the light despite the darkness. You’re the hope despite the black dots. You’re strong despite the weakness.”

Kent gives her readers light in the darkness, she gives hope despite the circumstances, and she gives her characters’ strengths in spite of weakness. This is why she has become one of my favorite writers in such a short span of time!!!!

Like You Hurt is another winner from Kaydence Snow!

I was really looking forward to reading Donna’s story, and it exceeded all my expectations!!! Donna is a very complex personality…Snow gave her multiple layers that she peeled back with each chapter. In the first book, Like You Care, Donna appeared to be in control and nothing seemed to bother her. Boy, was I in for a shock. Donna does like being in control, and people depend on her, yet she doesn’t have anyone to hold her up when she needs someone to lean on…that is until Hendrix shows up.

Like Donna, Hendrix was quite the complex character too. He appears to be something he isn’t. Donna finds him arrogant and cocky, especially when he tells her he wants nothing to do with her or her little clique. However, there is so much people don’t know about him. He is carrying a huge burden of guilt with him, and he just wants to get through his senior year and move on. Too bad, Donna has gotten under his skin. He can’t seem to get the girl he should stay away from out of his mind.

Like in the first book, Snow chose the perfect title. Hendrix and Donna are people who hurt, but for very different reasons. They seem to bring out both the worst and the best in each other. It just depends on what day of the week it is. There is a tremendous amount of push and pull with these two, but there has to be for the romance to be realistic for this couple. They are both extremely strong and independent characters. Yet, there are vulnerable sides to each other who find it hard to trust others with their emotions.

Not only was this a steamy romance. The chemistry between them was HOT!!! As with the first book, there is some suspense as well that made the book even more difficult to put down.

This series just keeps getting better. Snow does a great job of drawing her readers in with her unique storylines and characters. Looking forward to more!!!!

Oh my gosh!!!! This is an AMAZING read!!!! It is in my top 10 of 2020!!! This is a book you need to read NOW!!!

This book has it all…romance, angst, steam, and mystery. All these elements come together seamlessly to make a book that you will not be able to put down. I was intrigued when I read the synopsis, but it doesn’t even scratch the surface of what occurs between the pages.

Breeze, Violet, and Chase have been friends since childhood. Breeze grew up with loving parents. Twins, Violet and Chase, spent so much time at Breeze’s home because their parents are never around. Breeze lives in a charming but small home. Violet and Chase live in a mansion. Violet and Chase are always the center of attention, and Breeze tries to blend into the background. They shouldn’t even run in the same social circles, but their friendship works.

Life is normal until it isn’t. In fact, their lives will never be the same again with news of Violet’s murder. Breeze and Chase make a promise to one another to find her killer. Chase wants to start with Kai, Violet’s boyfriend. They were definitely not the perfect couple. What Breeze didn’t expect was the complicated feelings she has for both Chase and Kai.

Coralee June and Carrie Gray did a tremendous job on this book. It isn’t just a forbidden romance, but it’s about grief and survivor’s guilt. They take us through all the emotions that entails…from how we can make the person we lost a saint and then the feelings we have when we realize they weren’t…they were just human beings…not perfect but flawed.

I spent most of the night reading this…looking up and realizing how late it really was. But, it was worth every minute of sleep I lost!!!! I cannot wait until the next book!!!!

I have always loved to read. In kindergarten, I was the weird kid sitting in the reading nook by myself instead of trying to get more snacks. I’m excited to be putting my own voice on the page and watching a story I helped create come to life. I still love to read, but I also really like snacks.

I grew up in Chicago but recently moved back to the Dallas area where I live with my husband and son.

I have my Bachelor of Science in Biology. I spent a year researching chimpanzees and gorillas while I was in Chicago and then I spent another two months on a chimpanzee sanctuary trying to convince headstrong chimps to cooperate. Pro tip – grapes are a pretty hot bargaining tool. They work wonders with my toddler too.

Tangled In Ivy

Tangled in Ivy

by Ashley Farley

About the Book:

From the bestselling author of Sweet Tea Tuesdays comes a story of true love that spans decades.

Lillian Alexander’s father is dying of cancer. When he rambles on in a morphine-delirium, Lillian can’t ignore the feeling he’s trying to tell her something. At his funeral days later, she encounters ghosts from her past who stir long-suppressed memories from the day her mother died twenty-seven years ago. Why, if her mother’s death was an accident, does Lillian harbor guilt, as though she were somehow to blame?

When Lillian and her twin sister, Layla, learn the Stoney family fortune is gone, Lillian fights to save her ancestral home on Charleston’s prestigious East Battery. Desperate to resolve her money problems and get answers to her questions about the past, she tears her father’s study apart in search of clues. She discovers a thumb drive in a hollowed-out hardback copy of For Whom the Bell Tolls. The thumb drive, marked For Lillian in his handwriting, contains her father’s memoir. Secluded in the family’s cottage on Wadmalaw Island, she immerses herself in her father’s account of his stormy relationship with her mother. What she learns sets her on a journey of self-discovery.

Tangled in Ivy is a tale of tortured souls and southern family dysfunction.

All-Time Favorite Read

A Top Read of 2020

Tangled in Ivy is hands-down one of my top reads of ALL-TIME!!!

The book opens with Lillian saying good-bye to her beloved father after his battle with cancer.   Her twin sister arrives but too late even though she had been calling her for days. This is just one more thing to add more animosity and friction between the two of them. It’s funny that Lillian has never felt the twin bond she has always heard about. Not long after her father’s funeral and learning that their entire fortune is gone, Lillian goes searching for answers, especially when she finds a letter left to her from her father. She never expects the answers she finally finds.

This was such a unique read. It was a story within a story. It’s Lillian’s story, but for her to be able to discover things about herself, she has to read the story of her father and mother. And, my what a story that is!!!! The plot twists wouldn’t stop! It was exciting to see where the story was going to go next.

It is also a complex story of family and what it really means to be family. Lillian comes to learn a great deal about herself and the reason why she has the complicated relationship she has with her sister.

Farley is a wonderful writer, but she is also a storyteller. She definitely knows how to tell a story. I am always a fan of fiction based in Charleston because I was raised there, and she captures the special essence that is the South Carolina Lowcountry. I live elsewhere now, but I will always be a South Carolina girl at heart! This was indeed a love letter to the Lowcountry! She took me back home even if just for a little while.

I highly recommend reading this gem of a book! It took me longer than usual to read this book, but not because it was a slow-moving book that didn’t hold my interest….it was because it WAS SO GOOD!!!! I didn’t want to rush it because I was so immersed in the storyline, the characters, and the setting. I wanted to savor it until the very end!!!! Excellent, excellent read!!!!

Buried secrets never stay hidden in the South.

Savannah
I’m the one who broke up the golden couple. The woman people still whisper about, point at, and give dirty looks to.

Did I sleep with the prom king? No. Did I sleep with the town’s golden boy on vacation from college? Yes.

Did I believe that he was going to marry me? Wholeheartedly.

Did he? Not even close. He got engaged right in front of me and then his father threw two hundred dollars at me and told me to take the trash out.

So, I raised my son in a town where people love him because they think that his father is the sheriff.

It was going great, everything was working out till my lie got out.

Beau

I was getting ready to take over the mayoral office from my father, who was my hero.

Until I heard the secret he hoped would stay buried forever.

My brother has a son, not just any son but a son with the woman who was my best friend.
