LUCKY IN LOVE AND LUCKY TO BE ALIVE. UNTIL NOW.

Maizie’s mixing with international stars, spies, and her mother’s dark past in her sixth case in The Wall Street Journal bestselling series.

“Hollywood glitz meets backwoods grit in this fast-paced ride on D-list celeb Maizie Albright’s waning star. Sassy, Sexy, and Fun.” — Phoebe Fox, author of the Breakup Doctor series.

#WannabeDetectiving While ex-celebrity Maizie Albright’s dreams of becoming a for-real private investigator have not exactly been dashed, they have been slightly thwarted. Her ex-manager and still-mother, Vicki Albright, has taken the helm of Nash Security Services while rebuilding her entertainment management company. Sometimes with the same clients. Like Chinese action star, Lili Liang, who’s making the film Unlucky 18 in Georgia.

Thus far, Lili’s living up to her movie title. Her kung fu coach is missing. Her boyfriend’s disappeared. And her director, who gambled on her with the part, might be gambling with her life.

Maizie’s luck is also running out. Maizie and Nash find themselves struggling to balance a new partnership and new relationship between missing persons’ cases, wild goose chases, and tracking a bullet into dangerous places. Sometimes it’s enough to make a girl NOT want to put a ring on it. When it comes to facing an 18-caliber killer, what will Maizie put up as the target? Her heart or her life?

5 STARS

I have long been a fan of Larissa Reinhart, and 18 Caliber is exactly why she is one of my “go-to authors.” She knows just the perfect combination of mystery, romance, and laughs!

Maizie and Nash are adjusting to working for her controlling and egocentric mother, Vicki. They are doing more security rather than investigation, but all that changes when a man goes missing, there is a mysterious shooting and a bullet in a door…all three things lead back to, you got it, Vicki. Could she actually be involved in it? It is up to Nash and Maizie to find out. Buckle up, it’s a wild ride with twists and turns told in only the way Reinhart can tell it!!!!!

As much as the mystery dominates the book, the characters are getting more fleshed out, and I am learning things about them I didn’t know. For example, Vicki might actually be human!!!!! As always, I love Maizie and Nash. Their relationship seems to be moving along, but some changes are on the way for them. I am highly anticipating the next book to join them in their next pursuit. In addition, I’m eager to see where Vicki is going!

If you like your mysteries with humor and romance, with quirky characters, you can’t go wrong with anything that Larissa Reinhart writes!!!! She is an incredibly gifted storyteller!

Burying Bad News (A Much Winchmoor Mystery #3)

By Paula Williams

About The Book:

One severed head, two warring neighbours – and a cold-blooded killer stalks Much Winchmoor. There’s the murder made to look like a tragic accident, and a missing husband. Could he be victim number two?

The tiny Somerset village is fast gaining a reputation as the murder capital of the West Country, and once again, reporter/barmaid/dog walker Kat Latcham finds herself reluctantly dragged into the investigation.

Things are looking bad for Ed Fuller, the husband of one of Kat’s oldest friends. Kat’s convinced he’s innocent – but she’s been wrong before.

Has Kat come across her biggest challenge yet?

Fans of Janet Evanovich could well enjoy this “funky, modern day nosey detective” transported to the English countryside. The third Much Winchmoor mystery is, as always, spiked with humour and sprinkled with a touch of romance.

Another great little mystery from Paula Williams!!!!

There’s a lot going on in Much Winchmoor these days. Another murder has come to town, and it all starts with a severed head, and two neighbors who cannot stand the sight of one another! Before she knows it, our heroine, Kat, is in the center of it again!!!!

Kat is just trying to stay afloat with all her odd jobs…a reporter, working in a bar, and walking the village dogs. When a new owner takes over the paper where she works, she soon finds herself worrying about that job. She is always in the crosshairs of her boss at the bar too!

When a murder is committed, her good friend’s husband, Ed, becomes the prime suspect. All her other problems take a back seat as she tries to prove his innocence.

All the same delightful and not so delightful characters return. As a side issue, Kat also has to figure out why so many of her mother’s clients are cancelling and going to another hairdresser! As with all the other books in the series, this one is a fun little romp. If you like your mysteries with humor and a bit of romance, this series is a winner!!!!

Meet the Author:

paula-williams

Paula Williams is living her dream.  She’s written all her life – her earliest efforts involved blackmailing her unfortunate younger brothers into appearing in her various plays and pageants. But it’s only in recent years, when she turned her attention to writing short stories and serials for women’s magazines that she discovered, to her surprise, that people with better judgement than her brothers actually liked what she wrote and were prepared to pay her for it and she has sold over 400 short stories and serials both in the UK and overseas.

Now, she writes every day in a lovely, book-lined study in her home in Somerset, UK, where she lives with her husband and a handsome but not always obedient rescue Dalmatian called Duke.  She still writes for magazines but now writes novels as well.  She is currently writing the Much Winchmoor series of murder mysteries, set in a village not unlike the one she lives in –  although as far as she knows, none of her friends and neighbours have murderous tendencies.

A member of both the Romantic Novelists’ Association and the Crime Writers’ Association, her novels often feature  a murder or two, and are always spiked with humour and sprinkled with a touch of romance.

She also writes a monthly column, Ideas Store, for the writers’ magazine, Writers’ Forum.  And she blogs about her books, other people’s books and, quite often, Dalmatians at paulawilliamswriter.wordpress.com.

She gives talks on writing at writing festivals and to organised groups and has appeared several times of local radio.  In fact, she’ll talk about writing to anyone who’ll stand still long enough to listen.

But, as with all dreams, she worries that one day she’s going to wake up and find she still has to bully her brothers into reading ‘the play what she wrote’.

Southern Double Cross is a delightful, enjoyable mystery that is hard to put down until you have finished reading the last page.

Quinn is helping with a fundraiser at the home of Magnolia Stiles, a philanthropist and a not so nice one at that. Her boyfriend, Tucker, is on hand to help, and she definitely needs it when dealing with Magnolia. If that wasn’t enough, her boyfriend’s mother is telling everyone they have broken up. She is ready for this evening to be done. What she isn’t expecting is for Magnolia to be found dead, or her best friend’s brother to be charged with the crime.

Quinn thought she was done with finding bodies and being involved with murder, but she can’t let this one go. She has to help her friend, Pepper, prove her brother’s innocence. She never expected there to be so many suspects or so many secrets to come to light.

I fell in love with the storyline, the setting, and the characters. When I love those three things, I know I’m going to love the book. I was right about this one!!!! The storyline was full of twists and turns and kept me guessing throughout the book.

Who wouldn’t love the setting of Savannah, GA. I grew up in Charleston, SC, so anything that takes place in either of those places, are dear to my heart. The author writes so descriptively that I felt like I was a part of the story itself.

I, myself, enjoy quirky characters. They make me remember the book, and this one was full of those kind of characters, even the murder victim herself. Who couldn’t love Quinn’s family?

The book just kept getting better with every page I read. To make it even better, there were recipes at the end as well. If you are looking for a great little cozy mystery, give this book and the others in the series a try.

In this delightful new series by the New York Times bestselling author of the Flower Shop Mysteries, Athena Spencer comes back home to work with her crazy big Greek family at their garden center. But she never expected a return to her roots would mean protecting her family from murder . . .

After her divorce, Athena has returned to coastal Michigan to work in her family’s garden center and raise her son, while also caring for a mischievous wild raccoon and fending off her family’s annoying talent for nagging. Working alone at the garden center one night, Athena is startled by a handsome stranger who claims to be the rightful owner of a valuable statue her grandfather purchased at a recent estate sale.

But she has even bigger problems on her plate. The powerful Talbot family from whom her pappoús bought the statue is threatening to raze the shops on Greene Street’s “Little Greece” to make way for a condo. The recent death of the family’s patriarch already seemed suspicious, but now it’s clear that a murderer is in their midst. Athena will have to live up to her warrior goddess namesake to protect her family from a killer and save their community from ruin . . .

This is a wonderful, smart, and entertaining read!!!!

Athena did everything her parents didn’t want her to do…the big one…not marrying a great Greek man. Now, she has returned home to work in her family’s garden center and to raise her son after her divorce. She knew she would have to deal with her quirky sisters and an overbearing mother, but she didn’t know she would find herself right in the middle of a murder investigation that has links to her family.

While I loved the mystery, I also loved the characters and the backstories of the different characters as well. I just fell in love with her zany Greek family. Her mother was hysterical…she could be overbearing yet so lovable. Her sisters were funny as well! The chemistry between Athena and Case was evident, but the romance isn’t rushed.

As I wrote earlier, there are some backstories that at first didn’t appear to be connected, but the author later connects them flawlessly. There is mystery, twists, with a sprinkle of romance thrown in, and plenty of laughs that make this book hard to put down. I think readers will love that Athena writes a blog based on her family. All of them love it, but none of them have a clue Athena is the author or that they are the subjects.

I can’t wait to read more in this series. It looks like it is going to be a great one!!!!

The library can save your life… can it kill you, too?

JJ has a new job at the library, which ought to make her happy. But with all those books to shelve, the PTA to run, and a 16-year-old son to raise, there’s never enough time to spend with her sweetheart, police chief Ron Karlson. That’s especially true with Thanksgiving on the horizon and her mother coming to visit, not to mention the PTA’s Holiday Bazaar looming ahead.

When things turn deadly in the library stacks, JJ needs some answers fast, before she loses her job—or her life. She’s determined to learn everything about the victim, and for once the library doesn’t hold all the answers. JJ and Kitty may have to face the ultimate peril: a visit to Mrs. Halsey, the oldest—and crankiest—person on the island.

Christie’s Review

4.5 STARS

What a delightful, charming mystery with some light romantic elements!

JJ’s life seems to be falling into a rhythm even if it is busy! She has a new job she is enjoying at the library. She is rocking being a single mom to a teenage boy, and she is enjoying her time with her boyfriend, Ron, the police chief. She is busy with the PTA’s upcoming Holiday Bazaar and trying to get a swimming pool for the island.

Many people are in favor of the pool, except for one grumpy member, old Mr. Fingal, who seems more interested in getting a football team re-established…so he is a no. To add insult to injury, he is the one donating the land to the school. However, all that comes to a crashing halt when a woman, Jolene Smethers, claims that her family owns the land. The issue is tabled until the land dispute is settled.

JJ decides she is going to find out who this woman is. Days later,  there is an earthquake with a victim’s body in the library, and it’s none other than Jolene Smethers. It appears she didn’t die from natural causes…in other words, the books didn’t kill her. Now, JJ has something else to add to her busy life…solving another murder. The list of suspects is long because Jolene had a habit of stirring up trouble everywhere.

The mystery is fast-moving, without losing any substance. The characters are fun as well! I love JJ’s spunk and determination. She doesn’t give up easily. There are some twists and turns in the book. Her personal life may be changing in a way she isn’t expecting, but isn’t that what life is all about anyway?

If you like a good mystery, with a spunky, strong female lead with some great secondary characters, and a lovely setting, give this series a try!

About Rebecca M. Douglass

After a lifetime of reading, and a decade or more of slinging books at the library and herding cats with the PTA, Rebecca began to turn her experiences into books of her own, publishing her first in 2012. That failed to quiet the voices in her head, but seemed to entertain a number of readers, so she wrote some more, which generated still more voices. Despite the unlimited distractions provided by raising sons to the point of leaving home (and preparing to move without forwarding address if necessary to retain that empty nest), not to mention the mountains that keep calling (very hard to resist the urging of something the size of the Sierra Nevada), she has managed to pen a total of 9 books so far.

For those who enjoy murder and mayhem with a sense of humor, Rebecca’s Pismawallops PTA mysteries (Death By Ice Cream and Death By Trombone, Death By Adverb, and Death By Library) provide insights into what PTA moms are really like. If you prefer tall tales and even less of a grip on reality, visit Skunk Corners in The Ninja Librarian and the sequels Return to Skunk Corners and The Problem of Peggy. For those who’ve always thought that fantasy was a bit too high-minded, a stumble through rescues and escapes with Halitor the Hero, possibly the most hapless hero to ever run in fear from any and all fair maidens, should set you straight.

Why does Rebecca write so many different kinds of books (there’s even an alphabet picture book in the mix!)? We could argue that it’s because she has a rich lifetime of experience that requires expression in—squirrel!

Death Makes No Distinction

Death Makes No Distinction: A Dan Foster Mystery

by Lucienne Boyce

About the Book:

Two women at opposite ends of the social scale, both brutally murdered.

Principal Officer Dan Foster of the Bow Street Runners is surprised when his old rival John Townsend requests his help to investigate the murder of Louise Parmeter, a beautiful writer who once shared the bed of the Prince of Wales. Her jewellery is missing, savagely torn from her body. Her memoirs, which threaten to expose the indiscretions of the great and the good, are also missing.

Frustrated by the chief magistrate’s demand that he drop the investigation into the death of the unknown beggar woman, found savagely raped and beaten and left to die in the outhouse of a Holborn tavern, Dan is determined to get to the bottom of both murders. But as his enquiries take him into both the richest and the foulest places in London, and Townsend’s real reason for requesting his help gradually becomes clear, Dan is forced to face a shocking new reality when the people he loves are targeted by a shadowy and merciless adversary.

The investigation has suddenly got personal.

Christie’s Review

Death Makes No Distinction is a clever, well-written mystery!

The book begins with the murder of a young girl who was violently raped before she was killed. Dan Foster is determined to punish the perpetrator who ended her life…even if she was in the wrong part of town. As he is investigating this crime, he is summoned to investigate the murder of another woman who was of the opposite class…the rich class, who was once involved with King George.

Dan is extremely upset that he has been told to concentrate all his focus on wealthy Louise, not the young beggar woman. He is determined to solve both. If he doesn’t have enough on his plate already, a danger lurks even closer to his family than he possibly imagined.

Lure of Obsession is a perfect combination of romance, myth, paranormal, mystery, with a bit of thrills thrown in!!!

Melanie is the human vessel for the Muse of Tragic Poetry. Her world is rocked when she finds her roommate dead. Nate is the detective assigned to the case, and it’s apparent from their first meeting that they have insane chemistry. However, romance is only part of the story. It is an intriguing mystery with some pretty thrilling twists and turns.

Not only is this told from her point of view but from Nate’s, the killer’s, and some other nefarious characters. That really makes the book even better!

The characters of Melanie and Nate are more than they first appear. There are layers that make them such complex characters, and it was quite enjoyable seeing those layers peeled away to reveal something new about each one!

This was a solid read to what promises to be a quite intriguing series!!!!!

The Dead Wife  by Sue Fortin Blog Tour with Review

The Dead Wife

The Dead Wife

by Sue Fortin

About the Book:

SINCLAIR WIFE DEAD!  HUSBAND CLEARED!

Police have ruled out suspicious circumstances in the investigation into the death of Elizabeth Sinclair, wife of charismatic entrepreneur Harry Sinclair, found drowned in the lake of the family’s holiday park.

It’s been two years since the Sinclair case closed but when reporter Steph Durham receives a tipoff that could give her the scoop of the year, she’s drawn deeper and deeper into the secretive Sinclair family.

Elizabeth’s death wasn’t a tragic accident. And the truth will come at a deadly price…

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

The Dead Wife literally takes off at break-neck speed from the very first page of the book. I was hooked until I finished the last page!!!

Elizabeth Sinclair supposedly drowned in a freak accident at her husband’s family’s home two years ago, and the investigation was ruled that it was not a homicide. However, her mother has never given up on getting justice for her daughter. Steph Durham is a journalist, hoping for her big break. When her job takes her to the Sinclair estate, she is also contacted by Elizabeth’s mother, begging her to look into the case. Steph agrees even though her mother, a former detective, encourages her not to. However, she isn’t to be deterred. When she begins, spending more time with Elizabeth’s husband, Harry, she is drawn in deeper to the family. But, danger is closer than she could ever imagine.

This is a taut mystery full of twists and turns I never saw coming. I would think I knew who the culprit was, but the author kept proving me wrong. Her writing is incredible. The story is told in two timelines and in three voices…Elizabeth’s, Harry’s, and Steph’s. It was one of those rare books that left me with some complicated feelings. You never want anyone to be harmed, but I have to be honest, Elizabeth was not a victim who was well-liked at all. I wasn’t even a big fan of hers, and I thought that was brilliant on the author’s part.

This is mystery/suspense/thriller at its very best! It will keep you up late until the night until the very last secret and betrayal is exposed!!! It’s a must-read for every mystery fan!!!! Just be prepared to do nothing else until you finish the very last word!!!!

Dead & Talking

Dead & Talking: A Porter & The Gliss Investigation

by Des Burkinshaw

Synopsis:

If a ghost appeared from nowhere, rescued you from suicide and then ordered you to start solving crimes to help dead people, what would you do? When it happens to Porter Norton, he just wants to put his head in his hands and have nothing to do with it. But now he has to atone for the family curse that has seen all the men die at their own hands for five generations. The Gliss, the sarcastic spirit that rescues him, says he can now and see and hear the Dead – if he’s close to their remains. Porter has to use his unwelcome gift to clear up past injustices. Or else. Forced to investigate the murder of a WW1 British Tommy executed for spying in 1917, he begins to suspect the case has links to his own family history. Along the way, Porter enlists the help of a bickering group of misfits, who struggle to stay involved – because only fools believe in the supernatural, don’t they? Full of pop culture references, banter and twists, the story takes us from present-day London and Flanders to scenes from World War 1. As Porter, The Gliss, and friends, get deeper into the explosive case, they discover their own lives and sanity are at stake. An evil from WW1 pursues them all.

Christie’s Review

4 STARS

Dead & Talking promises to be a great series! It has a bit of everything, wicked humor, mystery, and the supernatural!

Porter is on the brink of losing his sanity, and he has decided to end it all by taking his life. He just figures he is following in the steps of his cursed family in which almost all his relatives have committed suicide. Imagine his surprise when a spirit appears and puts an end to his plan, saving his life. That was probably one of my favorite scenes. The spirit that calls itself The Gliss informs Porter he must atone for his family’s sins by solving past injustices. This is the beginning of one heck of a ride, alternating between the present and WWI.

Porter’s first step is solving the murder that occurred in 1917. Porter gets some aid from a band of misfits, and this is where a lot of the comedy comes in. Porter is a complex character. In the beginning, he is at the end of his rope and his sanity. He was rather sad, and he does grow exponentially by the end of the chapter. He is cynical and sarcastic, and when he and The Gliss are together, it’s pretty hysterical.

I was so glad to hear that this is only the first book in a series! I’m really looking forward to the team of Porter and The Gliss!!!!

Dead and Talking - DES DARK

Born in the middle of the Summer of Love on a pre-fab council estate in Luton, teenage bitterness and a chance viewing of the Watergate movie, All the President’s Men, made him vow to become a journalist and bring down the government.

First he had to pay for his journalism course, so he became a civil servant. Literally the day he had enough for his fees, he packed it in.
Twelve years on from watching the film, he was a journalist at The Times and had a big hand in bringing down John Major’s government. News ambitions sated, he packed that in too.

Several years of working for Channel 4, ITV and the BBC as a senior producer saw him working across the world, but he eventually got fed up with asking bands how the new album was coming along, and packed it in.

He set up his own production company magnificent! in 2002 and simultaneously worked on the BBC Live Events team for another 10 years. But then six years of work on the Olympics came along, so he packed the BBC in. Again.

Des has jammed with many of his heroes from Paul McCartney to Brian Wilson, Queen to Nancy Sinatra. He has interviewed many A-listers, including David Bowie, Michael Caine, John Cleese and even Noam Chomsky.

He has directed/produced a fairly long list of people – Muse, Coldplay, Michael Jackson, Jay-Z, produced BBC3’s Glastonbury coverage for a couple of years, made films about leprosy in India, comedy shorts with Miranda Hart and Lenny Henry and played guitar for Chas and Dave at the Hackney Empire.

He has made 300+ short films for the Queen, MI5, the BBC, Sky, Discovery, EMI, the British Academy and dozens of authorities, charities and private sector firms. His most recent publication was a series of interviews with leading academics like Mary Beard on the state of the humanities which was published as a standalone magazine by the British Academy.

Fed up with travelling and determined to be a half-decent dad, he now works in London as often as he can. He runs the Young Directors Film School making movies with young people and is about to head up the Digital Film and Video MA at Tileyard. An avid musician and producer, he releases his third album as Romano Chorizo (he plays drums, bass, piano, guitar and really bad sax).

He hates to be pigeon-holed, thinks creativity is a learned state of mind and wishes they would teach people memory and learning techniques at school.

Dead & Talking is his first novel, the first in a series of Porter & The Gliss investigations.

Injections of Insanity (The DI Sterling Series #3) by Lorraine Mace Blog Tour with Review

Injections of Insanity

Injections of Insanity (The DI Sterling Series #3)

by Lorraine Mace

Synopsis:

Detective Inspector Paolo Sterling has just six weeks to solve a series of murders by insulin injection, with nothing to connect the victims except the manner of death and a note left at each crime scene.

The murderer, determined to avenge a wrong from many years earlier, gets close to his prey by assuming various identities.

Can Paolo win in his race against the pretender?

Injections of Insanity is the third book in this addictive series! I always think Lorraine Mace can’t get any better, but she continues to prove me wrong!!!!

In this book, DI Paolo has another hard case in front of him. What appears to be one murder continues to multiply. Most of these victims appear to be well-respected members of society. As we all know, everything isn’t always what it appears to be. I’m not going to reveal more about the plot because I hate spoilers. Just know…you are in for a great mystery with plenty of twists and turns. I really thought I knew who the murderer was this time, but again, I was proven wrong!!!!!

On another note, Mace gives us more insight into Paolo’s personal life, and life seems to be looking up for him in his romantic life and his relationship with his daughter. However, Mace throws a bit of a twist in that too! I’m anxious to see where this goes! Dave is working on his personal life as well. I just love the rapport between him and Paolo.

Our murderer is a bit different in this one as well. Readers will see this not too far along in the book. He wasn’t completely without feelings. It appears that circumstances in life help create the monster living inside of him.

I love that Mace gives us a glimpse inside of the murderer’s mind, but she does this in all of her books. This is what sets her apart in her genre. Sometimes it’s a scary place to be, but it gives her readers more insight into their motivations and who they are as characters in her books. Her plotlines, the perfectly paced action, her characters, and the way she writes keeps me coming back for more! I’m looking forward to her next book in the series!!!!
