The Migraine Relief Plan

The Migraine Relief Plan: An 8-Week Transition to Better Eating, Fewer Headaches, and Optimal Health

In The Migraine Relief Plan, certified health and wellness coach Stephanie Weaver outlines a new, step-by-step lifestyle approach to reducing migraine frequency and severity.

Using the latest research, her own migraine diagnosis, and extensive testing, Weaver has designed an accessible plan to help those living with migraine, headaches, or Meniere’s disease. Over the course of eight weeks, the plan gradually transitions readers into a healthier lifestyle, including key behaviors such as regular sleep, trigger-free eating, gentle exercise, and relaxation techniques. The book also collects resources—shopping lists, meal plans, symptom tracking charts, and kitchen-tested recipes for breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner—to provide readers with the tools they need to be successful.

The Migraine Relief Plan encourages readers to eat within the guidelines while still helping them follow personal dietary choices, like vegan or Paleo, and navigate challenges, such as parties, work, and travel. A must-have resource for anyone who lives with head pain, this book will inspire you to rethink your attitude toward health and wellness.

I suffer from migraines myself, so I was incredibly excited to read this book. The author did not disappoint.

For anyone who suffers from migraines, you all know how horrible they can be. For me, they come on rather quickly and fluctuate on how serious they will be. Weaver has given me some fascinating insight to them as well as some great tips. She gives her readers a total body plan, not just a diet to follow. She gives other tips such as proper rest, exercises, and relaxation techniques that not only promises to help alleviate and avoid migraines, but also how to live a healthier life.

I have not begun the plan myself, but all the tips seem fairly straight-forward and pretty easy to follow. I, myself, will beginning the program in the upcoming weeks. I’m looking forward to it.

I liked the ecopy of the book so much that I have ordered the paperback edition so that I can make notes and highlights in the book. For anyone who suffers from these debilitating headaches, I would recommend that you give this book a look. I will have a follow up review a few months after I begin this plan to let others know how this plan is working for me.

Dear Mr. Pop Star was a clever, enjoyable, and funny book perfect for any music fan! The synopsis itself caught my attention. While I read mostly fiction, I was really looking forward to reading this one, and it didn’t disappoint!

I wasn’t familiar with every musician or band, but all the letters were entertaining. It was very interesting to realize that some of the songs weren’t really about what I thought. This was illustrated in the responses from “Head Over Heels” by Tears for Fears, which was probably the most humorous, and “My Sharona” by The Knack. I remember both of these songs very well.

One of my all-time favorite letters back to the Philpott’s was from Nu Shooz having to do with the line “tell me what’s on your mind.” The response was ingenious and hilarious. A list was sent back with 10 random questions which included: How the existence of the Easter Bunny was possible? Why is there an extra “D” in Wednesday? That one had me laughing for a while!

Not only were letters included with the responses, but I also enjoyed the notes included to band//musicians without their responses in postcard illustrations.

Any fan of music would really enjoy this collection. It can be read very quickly, and it would make the perfect gift for any occasion.

Meet the Authors:

Derek and Dave Philpott are the nom de plumes of two ordinary members of the public, working with help from a small family and, crucially, a worldwide social networking community. Neither they, or anybody assisting with the creative aspects of this project had any connections with the music, entertainment, media or publishing industries whatsoever at the time of its commencement. Despite these humble origins, however, they now find themselves in the bizarre but enviable position whereby many pop stars and people within these circles are their friends “in real life’” (whatever that means!). Many artists consider “getting a Dereking” as a badge of honour, and, as one has participant succinctly put it-

Rats, Mice, and Other Things You Can't Take to the Bank (1)

Rats, Mice, and Other Things You Can’t Take to the Bank

by Leslie Handler

About the book:

Part memoir, part essay collection, Rats, Mice, and Other Things You Can’t Take to the Bank is written with both wit and charm. It will take you on a ride from finding a mouse in the house to the mortgage crisis, from a smile to a chuckle and from a few tears to the feeling of being wrapped in a blanket sipping a warm cup of cocoa on a cold winter’s day. Handler offers a rich, touching, heartfelt and reflective read that will leave the reader with an indelible uplifting spirit.

What a great collection of essays about life!!!!

Handler has written a book that is part memoir and a collection of essays. She grabbed not only my mind but my heart in her introduction. Life is full of ups and downs as she illustrates in her writings. Some of those she shared made me laugh, and some of them made me cry. She wrote of marriage, parenthood, dating, family, motherhood, and life in general.

Her enduring love story with her husband was inspirational. She made it clear that her marriage isn’t perfect, but their commitment to each other is what got them through their hard times, such as 9/11, Super Storm Sandy, and cancer.

She is honest in her commentary about life…one of my favorites, “Stupid Things,” and aging. However, my favorite was “To Young People.” It’s great advice for not only younger people but older people as well. As she says, we should all practice kindness, moderation, and passion in life. “Whatever your choices are, if you practice these three things, your regrets will be small and your successes will not only be abundant, but they will come from your heart.” Thank you, Leslie Handler, for giving your readers a wonderful, thought-provoking, and emotional read!

Owning a dog can bring a lot of joy and happiness, but it can also and is hard work at times. I know this myself as I share my home with my two beautiful girls, Honey and Lily! Gina Harley has come up with a great guide to picking your dog, care throughout their life, and when it comes that heartbreaking time of telling your best friend good-bye.

She includes some great tips, and she doesn’t pretend to be an expert. Sure, there will be things in here that not everyone agrees with, but I think that is true with any book of the same nature. The author is from Australia, so there are some terms that are different here in the US, but I knew what she meant.

I really thought the book was great for any dog owner. I want to highlight the two sections that grabbed me, and it’s on the more emotional level. Almost every guidebook on owning dogs always highlight the important responsibility of having a dog. She spoke to me my emotions. She really asked some important questions of why you want to add a dog to your family. You don’t get one because you are bored. In addition, she asks you to really think about the financial responsibility you are taking on…treats, food, medical care, toys, etc. These are all important questions everyone should ask before adding a dog to your household.

The second section is the part about saying your final good-bye to our best friend. Some guide books don’t include this. In my opinion, this is one of the most important things to consider when owning a dog. You never really think about this when you are bringing them home, but it’s something we all will face. It’s hard and it’s painful. I have tears in my eyes as I write this because I have had to say that painful good-bye to two most wonderful boys I have been blessed to share my life with, Hunter and Hershey. She is very honest about the pain we all experience. You are losing a member of your family.  She even goes so far to offer advice on when it’s time to bring another one home.

This is a great guide to owning a dog, and she offers a free dog bundle pack at the end of the book. It’s a great practical guide that also speaks to your heart!

The Little Gate-Crasher

by Gabrielle Kaplan-Mayer

Mace Bugen might have been an achondroplastic dwarf, 43 inches tall with an average size head and torso set on small, twisted legs—but that didn’t mean he was an idiot or a pushover. In truth, he was smarter than most; over the years, he learned to effectively turn what society in those days called a handicap into a powerful tool he could use to his advantage.

“When I was a kid,” he once said, “I’d ask myself, Why is that guy on the football team? Why can’t I be on the team? Why didn’t God give me the height so I could be the hero?”

“Then at some point I figured it out: I gotta do something special to let ’em know I’m me.”

In The Little Gate Crasher: The Life And Photos Of Mace BugenI remember my amazing great-Uncle Mace Bugen through his journey as a first-generation Jewish-American kid in working class Philipsburg, NJ to becoming the first celebrity selfie-artist—way ahead of his time.

Featuring vintage photos of Mace with his exploits, The Little Gate Crasher captures three decades of American pop culture, seen through the unique lens of Mace and his gate-crashing exploits.

Underneath his antics, we meet a complex man who continually defies others expectations and meets life on his own terms. Mace becomes a successful businessman and devoted son to his aging parents. But in his gate-crashing antics, we best get to see Mace’s unique combination of guile, cunning and sense of entitlement, which he used to engineer photos of himself with some of the biggest celebrities of his day. If people were going to stare at him all of his life, he would give them something to see.

The Little Gate Crasher features over 50 vintage photos of Mace with celebrities, athletes and politicians, including Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Muhammed Ali, Richard Nixon, Jane Russel, Joe DiMaggio and more.

Q & A with Gabrielle Kaplan-Mayer

TLG - IMG_8674

How did you come up with the idea for this book?

“The Little Gate-Crasher” is a memoir about the most amazing person in my family—my Great-Uncle Mace Bugen.

My Grandmother Minerva, my Great-Uncle Mace’s older sister, was a wonderful storyteller and told me many stories about her childhood as I was growing up—she had grown up in a completely different circumstance, as  a daughter of immigrants who had recently come to America and who worked hard in their grocery store to make a living. It was the Great depression and every penny counted. My Grandma shared many stories about her brother Mace and how impressed she was by his ability to not pity himself for being a dwarf and to not think less of himself—even though others teased or jeered at him.

When my Grandmother died, Mace’s photo album with his amazing celebrity photos was passed down to my Mom. My family and I would look at it and marvel as the unique history Mace created of pop culture from the mid-40s to the mid-70s—he had “celebrity selfies” with Ella Fitzgerald, Joe DiMaggio, Nixon, Ali—all of the famous athletes, politicians and entertainers of the era.

As I looked at the photos, I thought of Mace’s story and wondered not only how did he manage to get these photos considering his limited mobility—but why? What did these photos mean to him and what we can learn from there?

A great story emerged—of a confidant man given a significant challenge who viewed himself as no less than anyone else, despite the message that society continually gave him.

What was your favorite thing about each character?

Writing this book allowed me to get to know more about my family than ever before. I discovered so many amazing things about my Uncle and also about my great-Grandparents, who raised him with unconditional love and the belief that he was no less than anyone else.

Do you have a playlist you listen to when writing?

Although I love music, I prefer silence when I write. Once I get in the flow, I don’t want any distraction!

Any favorite foods/drinks you like while writing?

I’m a hard core coffee addict. I start my day around 6am with two strong cups—just black. That’s my ritual before I sit down and start writing.

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

My third grade teacher gave us a writing assignment and she recognized that I had some ability! She gave me time in class to continue to write stories. That belief in me at a young age gave me the confidence to keep writing. I’ve studied and written poetry and playwrighting and later came to nonfiction and memoir. This is my groove!

What are some are your favorite reads?

I am always reading! Right now, I’m really into memoir…I’ve recently read Roxane Gay and Anne Lamott. I also just read all of Elena Ferrante’s “Neopolitan Novels”’—I couldn’t put them down and stayed up into the night reading.

What an witty and hilarious read!!! Satire and parody are two of my favorite things, and this book had both.

The layout was genius! It is set up like a genuine travel guide, that is until you quickly see the dry humor. For instance, this passage had me rolling with laughter.

“For a proper afternoon tradition, don’t miss Merlin’s Tea Shoppe near Moorgate, London’s very first dining establishment dating from the time of King Arthur. The service is famously dismissive, the sandwiches cloy and the tea watery, but just look around you–you’re paying for a genuine slice of British culinary history.”

This is just one of the many instances where modern society is being poked fun of. There are stops at vegan styling salon with Darby, the famous feline who has been rumored to persuading other London felines to become vegans. Or, you can visit the “fancy bottom parlours” that specialize in you guessed it, cleansing, with fancy toilet paper among other things!

If parody is your thing, and you like a good laugh, this is a great pick!!!
