Injections of Insanity (The DI Sterling Series #3)

by Lorraine Mace

Synopsis:

Detective Inspector Paolo Sterling has just six weeks to solve a series of murders by insulin injection, with nothing to connect the victims except the manner of death and a note left at each crime scene.

The murderer, determined to avenge a wrong from many years earlier, gets close to his prey by assuming various identities.

Can Paolo win in his race against the pretender?

Injections of Insanity is the third book in this addictive series! I always think Lorraine Mace can’t get any better, but she continues to prove me wrong!!!!

In this book, DI Paolo has another hard case in front of him. What appears to be one murder continues to multiply. Most of these victims appear to be well-respected members of society. As we all know, everything isn’t always what it appears to be. I’m not going to reveal more about the plot because I hate spoilers. Just know…you are in for a great mystery with plenty of twists and turns. I really thought I knew who the murderer was this time, but again, I was proven wrong!!!!!

On another note, Mace gives us more insight into Paolo’s personal life, and life seems to be looking up for him in his romantic life and his relationship with his daughter. However, Mace throws a bit of a twist in that too! I’m anxious to see where this goes! Dave is working on his personal life as well. I just love the rapport between him and Paolo.

Our murderer is a bit different in this one as well. Readers will see this not too far along in the book. He wasn’t completely without feelings. It appears that circumstances in life help create the monster living inside of him.

I love that Mace gives us a glimpse inside of the murderer’s mind, but she does this in all of her books. This is what sets her apart in her genre. Sometimes it’s a scary place to be, but it gives her readers more insight into their motivations and who they are as characters in her books. Her plotlines, the perfectly paced action, her characters, and the way she writes keeps me coming back for more! I’m looking forward to her next book in the series!!!!

The Suspects

The Suspects

by Katharine Johnson

Synopsis:

Shallow Grave meets The Secret History in this quirky psychological thriller

Bristol, 1988. Five young graduates on the threshold of their careers buy a house together in order to get a foot on the property ladder before prices spiral out of their reach. But it soon becomes the house share from hell.

After their New Year’s Eve party, they discover a body – and it’s clear they’ll be the first suspects. As each of them has a good reason from their past not to trust the police, they come up with a solution – one which forces them into a life of secrets and lies. But can they trust each other?

“The hugely talented Katharine Johnson has, again delivered a tense thriller! This is a compelling novel – up there with Erin Kelly and Sophie Hannah.”

~Val Penny, author of The Edinburgh Crime Mysteries.~

“Gripping and frighteningly realistic. The twists and turns kept me guessing to the very end.”

~Jo Fenton, author of The Brotherhood.~

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

An amazing psychological suspense thriller that had me on the edge of my seat!!!

Five university graduates who all work at the same place decide to buy a house together. At first, it seems like a great idea. Emily, Xanthe, Stuart, Zak, and Imogene are on their best behavior with one another, but it doesn’t take long before the cracks in their arrangement begin to appear. Finding a dead body in their basement on New Year’s Eve doesn’t make it any better. That night would have far-reaching consequences for the five housemates.

Secrets, lies, and betrayals are at this heart of this book. There are so many twists and turns, but all will be revealed by the end. I know I’m not revealing much, but I can’t! I wouldn’t want to spoil a thing for those who haven’t read this one! Once you start, you won’t come up for air until the last page is finished.

The author has an amazing talent in building the suspense. By the end of every chapter, she would add some foreshadowing that would be another twist in the story! If you are looking for a nail-biter of a book, The Suspects is not to be missed!!!!

New Review: The Judas Tree (Linked Series #1) by Susan Bacoyanis

21 Dec

Paint and Paper

Synopsis:

Mary Webster’s reaction to her lover’s betrayal is off the chart…

Mary seems like an ordinary 46-year-old divorcee, beginning a new life in rural England, but she has depths of pent-up pain, the result of 20 years of marital infidelities and abuse. All she needs is a trigger to unleash savage emotions.

When she becomes entangled with Jonas, a married man, Mary suddenly finds herself in the opposite role of the ‘other woman’. Jonas has a nasty streak, however, and taunts with the nursery rhyme ‘Mary, Mary quite contrary…’.

But when Mary uncovers Jonas’s web of seductive lies, betraying not only herself but his wife and several young village women, she plots her revenge and acts out the real meaning of the nursery rhyme…

As things go from bad to worse, Mary is driven over the edge of normality. Because Mary is not normal … she is damaged. Her only redeeming quality is her belief that she is acting for the greater good …

Susan Bacoyanis’s intriguing psychological thriller The Judas Tree is a chilling tale of multiple acts of betrayal and the consequences of greed. It has deep echoes of Penelope Mortimer’s angry woman classic of the Sixties, The Pumpkin Eater.

5 STARS

Wow! What a read!!! If you want a book that will keep you reading the pages into the night, this is the one for you!!!!

Mary has seen her fair share of heartbreak and betrayal. Her husband has left her and much of her time is taken up watching the neighbors, the handsome Jonas and his wife. She finds herself feeling things for this stranger that she knows is wrong. Yet, she can’t stop herself. The more involved she gets with him, his flaws become hard to ignore. He is an abuser and a betrayer. Something inside of her breaks and a brutal plot of revenge is born.

This book is a psychological read like I have never read before. It is a thriller, yet it is also a deep look inside of a woman who has been damaged. She really made me feel somewhat sorry for her and really believe that she is doing these really evil things for the greater good. She wants to make the abuser feel abused, and let me tell you, she really does a good job at that. One of my favorite aspects of this book was the parallels drawn between her and Mary Tudor. All of us know Mary did some really evil things, but I don’t think she was born evil. I think the world shaped her into the person she became. I think the same can be said of Mary in this book.

Make sure as you are reading to note the importance of the title and the parallels with Judas, himself.

If you want a book that will chill you to the bone and really make you think, The Judas Tree is a book not to be missed!!! This book was excellent from the beginning until the very end!!!!!

5 STARS

It’s very rare that a book leaves me speechless, but this one did! If you think the first book in the series, The Penance List, was a mind bender, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Cunningham somehow topped the action and the suspense in this one.

When I write reviews for mysteries or suspense, I don’t go into too much detail as I don’t want to spoil anything for other readers. So, no spoilers from me. The book picks up after the events in book 1, and Tara thinks she might finally be safe. Too bad for her, she is anything but that. She is David’s obsession, and he will stop at nothing to have her.

I have to say that David is “hands down” is the most complex character I have ever met! He causes so many complicated feelings within me. Part of me feels sorry for him for all he has endured, but part of me is totally creeped out and frightened by him. As the author writes, “we understand the boy, but fear the man.” He is full of darkness, but he was made into the man he is by circumstances, pain, and horrific abuse. He leaves me completely conflicted.

As conflicted as I am about David, I feel the same with Tara. She has complicated feelings for him as well. She sees the damaged child, but she also sees the psychological mess he has become! All I know is I definitely have no desire to walk in her shoes.

I have never had a writer make me question things or had me in such an emotional state before. That proves to me how incredibly talented she is! Not many writers can say they make readers feel that way! I have no clue where the next book will take me, but I’m absolutely sure it will be quite a ride!

Wow! What a great follow up to the first book in the Claire Goodnite series! When I read the synopsis, I was a bit nervous about the direction of Claire and Wesley’s relationship. I knew they would probably face a tough test, and I was right!

Rebecca did a great job of combining suspense, mystery, and romance, with a lot of creepiness thrown in! It reminded me a bit of Kiss the Girls by James Patterson, but yet was completely original. As Claire delves deeper into the mystery, she is facing some hard truths about her relationship with Wes. She will ultimately have to decide whether to trust him or not. That is incredibly hard for her considering her past.

Rebecca kept me guessing, and the twists and turns definitely kept my interest throughout the book. There was a perfect combination of romance, steam, and suspense. The further I got into the book, I felt like I was also getting to know the characters on a deeper level, and for anyone who read the first book, you know how complex these characters are. I am guessing there will be a book about Liam and Claire’s best friends because of some foreshadowing thrown in. I loved how Rebecca has just given us enough of that storyline to really make us curious. Plus, I’m dying to know the whole mystery behind Claire’s kidnapping years ago.

CHRISTIE’S REVIEW

4.5 STARS

Never have a read such a suspenseful and action-packed novella! It may only be 92 pages, but Leuschel left nothing out!!!!

This is an incredible look into a disturbed and manipulative female mind! Alexa appears perfect. She is the shining example of a high-powered executive. However, you know what many people say, appearances can be deceiving, and that is definitely the case with Alexa. She is beautiful, smart, and people take notice when she enters a room. Underneath, she is none of those things except a disturbed and manipulative individual. It doesn’t take her long to win over almost everyone in her new job except Monique who can see Alexa isn’t all she pretends to be.

On the other hand, Rosie is sweet and very hard-working. She works long hours to pay for her mother’s care, but she is still having trouble making ends meet. It doesn’t take Alexa long to worm her way into Rosie’s life offering a shoulder to lean on. When you lean on Alexa, it always comes with a price as Rosie will soon discover.

The book was narrated by both Alexa and Rosie. It was incredible seeing inside Alexa’s mind. Readers get an up close and personal view of just what a psychopath she truly is. In her warped perception, she is the victim. She is always the one being taken advantage of and set up. In reality, she is the perpetrator, not the victim, which was fascinating to see how warped her perception was.

This is a book certain to spark some interesting conversations, and it would make a great read for a book club!

CHRISTIE’S REVIEW

4.5 STARS

Great read by Meg Little Reilly!!!

I love a book that is thought provoking, something that will make me think outside of the box, and Reilly definitely made me do that!

Kat, Sean, and Hunter are out celebrating after Kat sold a piece of artwork. What begins as a night of celebration ends in tragedy. It will completely change the relationship they have with one another. Nothing will ever be the same!

Kat and Sean have been a couple for years. Kat has made great strides in overcoming her dysfunctional childhood, and she enjoys her life in Martha’s Vineyard. She and Sean are very different. She isn’t from the island, and he is tied to it, showing no interest in leaving. He has rules and boundaries he lives by, and she feels safe with those. However, is that who she really is deep down inside her soul? She wants to be there, yet a part of her doesn’t feel like she really belongs.

Hunter is there trying to keep a low profile. He is the son of a powerful U.S. Senator who is up for re-election. Hunter hasn’t always been the best son, but he is trying his best to not to affect his father’s chances of re-election.

Hunter, Kat, and Kyle, the new bartender, decide to go out Hunter’s boat after Sean leaves to go home. Kat doesn’t realize that her choice to go out is a tragic mistake until it’s too late. This is where the lines of right and wrong become blurred.

I loved the way Reilly writes. She does it in a way that draws you completely into the story. I felt like I was right there with Hunter and Kat from the very beginning. I could picture the setting clearly in my mind. She also has a way of making me empathize with the characters that I might not really have empathized with before. If you are in the mood to read a book that will challenge the way you think about certain things, I highly recommend this one!
