Christie’s Review

4.5 STARS

The Wife Who Knew Too Much by Michele Campbell was addictive from the opening pages!!!

Let me begin by saying, I loved the way Campbell opened the book…in the first Mrs. Ford’s, Nina’s, voice. She gave me a hook to keep me reading while also giving me the background that sets the stage for the entire book.

Nina has just discovered her husband, Connor, is having an affair. She plans to confront him, but at the some point, her body is found in the family pool. Was it an accident, suicide, or something more sinister?

Connor is indeed having an affair with the other main character, Tabitha. They were involved as teens years earlier and have recently reconnected. He planned on leaving Nina, but he wanted to find a way to leave with at least some money, and his job at Nina’s company. Nina had a pretty ironclad prenup. With Nina’s death, he has everything he wants, including Tabitha. It isn’t long before she becomes the next Mrs. Ford.

Tabitha was expecting a new start with Connor, but she finds that Nina is still very much a part of their lives. Secrets and betrayals soon surface as Tabitha begins to wonder if Nina’s death was murder. And what, if any part, did Connor play in it?

The twists to the mystery just kept coming. I guessed one of them, but Campbell threw me for a loop with the second twist. I didn’t see that one coming!

Campbell’s characters were a huge part of why the book was so good. They were multi-layered and very complex. None of them were saints, but Tabitha was the one character I actually had some empathy for. I thought at times she had too little thought for herself and let her love for Connor blind her to his faults.

Connor didn’t have a great deal of redeeming qualities. He was selfish and self-centered, and let his love for money color how he looked at life. I felt like he didn’t really appreciate Tabitha or Nina. Despite his flaws, I believed he felt something for Tabitha that he didn’t feel for anyone else. But, did his flaws make him a murderer? That was a question I kept asking myself throughout the book.

Another great thing about the book was how Campbell made Nina a very important character despite her death in the beginning of the book. She, like all the other characters, was very complex.

Michele Campbell is a new writer to me. Her books had been on my list to read, and I am so glad I finally read one of her books. I’m looking forward to reading more from her.

New Review: The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins

The Wife Upstairs

by Rachel Hawkins

About the Book:

A delicious twist on a Gothic classic, The Wife Upstairs pairs Southern charm with atmospheric domestic suspense, perfect for fans of B.A. Paris and Megan Miranda.

Meet Jane. Newly arrived to Birmingham, Alabama, Jane is a broke dog-walker in Thornfield Estates––a gated community full of McMansions, shiny SUVs, and bored housewives. The kind of place where no one will notice if Jane lifts the discarded tchotchkes and jewelry off the side tables of her well-heeled clients. Where no one will think to ask if Jane is her real name.

But her luck changes when she meets Eddie Rochester. Recently widowed, Eddie is Thornfield Estates’ most mysterious resident. His wife, Bea, drowned in a boating accident with her best friend, their bodies lost to the deep. Jane can’t help but see an opportunity in Eddie––not only is he rich, brooding, and handsome, he could also offer her the kind of protection she’s always yearned for.

Yet as Jane and Eddie fall for each other, Jane is increasingly haunted by the legend of Bea, an ambitious beauty with a rags-to-riches origin story, who launched a wildly successful southern lifestyle brand. How can she, plain Jane, ever measure up? And can she win Eddie’s heart before her past––or his––catches up to her?

With delicious suspense, incisive wit, and a fresh, feminist sensibility, The Wife Upstairs flips the script on a timeless tale of forbidden romance, ill-advised attraction, and a wife who just won’t stay buried. In this vivid reimagining of one of literature’s most twisted love triangles, which Mrs. Rochester will get her happy ending?

My Review

What a delicious, twisty suspense!

I was intrigued when I saw it was a reimagining of Jane Eyre. I was also a bit nervous too….Jane Eyre is one of my all-time reads. Not all twists on classics are good things, but this one was! It had it all…secrets, lies, and betrayals. All the ingredients that make suspense so good!

Jane has a past that she wants to not just overcome but escape. She sees her opportunity in Eddie Rochester. He is newly widowed after his wife drowned a year before with her best friend, even though their bodies were never found. He could give her the things she has always dreamed of. What she doesn’t expect is that Eddie has secrets of his own that might just be more dangerous than she could imagine.

I enjoyed the way Hawkins wrote the storyline. She keeps you guessing, and I wasn’t quite sure who the enemy was. Of course, I was expecting a twist as it is based on Jane Eyre. However, I didn’t expect the twist she actually gave me! WOW!!!!

If you are looking for characters that you are just going to love, don’t go looking for them in this book. You won’t get them! However, who is to say, you can’t love a good book with characters you don’t like? Rachel Hawkins taught me that you could! She still gave me characters that were full of depth and complexities!

If you have a chance, you should also listen to the book. I did both, and the narrators did a phenomenal job of pulling you right into the story!

Hawkins has already proven herself as a great YA author, and I’m glad to say that I think she has a bright future writing adult books as well!!!!!

New Review: The Wrong Family by Tarryn Fisher

The Wrong Family

by Tarryn Fisher

From the author of the instant New York Times bestseller The Wives comes another twisted psychological thriller guaranteed to turn your world upside down.

Have you ever been wrong about someone?

Juno was wrong about Winnie Crouch.

Before moving in with the Crouch family, Juno thought Winnie and her husband, Nigel, had the perfect marriage, the perfect son—the perfect life. Only now that she’s living in their beautiful house, she sees the cracks in the crumbling facade are too deep to ignore.

Still, she isn’t one to judge. After her grim diagnosis, the retired therapist simply wants a place to live out the rest of her days in peace. But that peace is shattered the day Juno overhears a chilling conversation between Winnie and Nigel…

She shouldn’t get involved.

She really shouldn’t.

But this could be her chance to make a few things right.

Because if you thought Juno didn’t have a secret of her own, then you were wrong about her, too.

From the wickedly dark mind of bestselling author Tarryn Fisher, The Wrong Family is a taut new thriller that’s riddled with twists in all the right places.

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

A Top Read in Psychological Thriller

The Wrong Family by Tarryn Fisher is a compelling, riveting, and a nail-biter of a read! As usual, I finish her books usually within a day!!!

The book is told in two women’s voices, Winnie and Juno. Fisher definitely digs deep into both women’s psyches. At first glance, it appears these two women couldn’t be more different. As I learned more, they shared more than a few similarities. Both have worked in the mental health field, both have made really bad decisions in the past, and both feel like they know what is best for those around them, whether in their personal or professional lives.

Each woman thought their past decisions were the right ones, but they soon learn you can be wrong. Juno lives in the Winnie’s home, along with Winnie’s husband, Nigel, and their son, Samuel. In the beginning, she thinks they are the perfect family, and really, that is what Winnie tries to portray to the outside world. When Juno hears something she was never meant to hear, she decides she has to intervene. Has she learned nothing from her past…all she has to do is look to her past to realize her last intervention didn’t go so well. Winnie knows something about that because her actions in the past have completely altered her life with her husband and son. Winnie and Juno’s paths are about to converge in ways they never imagined.

If you know anything about Tarryn Fisher’s writing, you know never to trust her synopses. There is so much going on underneath the surface. She perfectly pulls back each layer to reveal twists and turns you never see coming!

I saw that some reviewers mentioned that this isn’t like her books in the past. It was a bit different from her other stuff, but I thought it was just as good! For me, that is a characteristic of a great writer. Fisher has never fit into a nice, perfect genre, and that is what makes her so amazing, and she always keeps me coming back for more!

Along Came a Soldier by Brenda Davies has all the ingredients that make a book one of my favorites…romance, history, and mystery!!! I was completely enthralled from the very beginning!

Charity and Jethro meet by chance, not knowing their families have been enemies. However, when the heart is involved, things like old grudges don’t matter too much. Charity is a woman caught in a time where women’s opinions didn’t matter, and she was to obey her family. So, she is torn, but when Jethro is accused of murder, the decision is made for her. There is no way she can let him go to prison for a murder he didn’t commit.

Charity’s brother, Joe, the town bonesetter, Grace, and her friend, William, join together to prove his innocence. They will discover that their small village is full of deadly secrets. This crew of sleuths could have their very own series!!!

I know when I have discovered a talented writer when she makes me actually have some pity for the person who is supposed to be the evil one. I would never condone what he did, but I could understand what put him in that state of mind.

The forbidden romance was a part of the novel, but not the entirety of it. However, it is a romance that is both sweet and swoonworthy. Charity shows Jethro that she loves him for the person he is on the inside, not the perception of others. He shows her how to begin living her own life just for her which was not the norm in the 1820s.

If you are looking for a book that crosses several genres with elements of suspense, mystery, and some paranormal aspects, you can’t go wrong with this book. Brenda Davies blends all of them perfectly to make a fantastic read!!!!!

5 STARS

The Memories We Bury is the very definition of a nailbiter for me. I was captivated by the story and the characters, rapidly flipping through the pages until I knew what the truth really was.

Lizzie hasn’t always had a happy life, but she believes her happily ever after is within reach after a whirlwind romance and marriage to Markus. He showers her with attention which she absorbs readily as she never had much of that growing up. Now, they have moved to a new home in Edinburgh, and it’s not long before her life changes when she discovers she is pregnant. Markus becomes distant, and she is very grateful to her new older neighbor, Morag. She likes having a “mother figure” since she never really had that kind of relationship with her own critical mother. She becomes reliant on Morag, and even more so when her sweet baby boy is born. The birth of her son changes her relationship with both Morag and Markus in ways she never imagined.

The unique way the story is laid out is brilliant, told both in Lizzie and Morag’s voices. It really added to the intrigue of the book. There were some pretty creepy moments that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

The characters were so complex and complicated. With every chapter, the author revealed another layer to their personality I wasn’t expecting. There were some real surprises and twists I didn’t see coming when I first started the book.

If you are looking for a book with thrills and suspense, you can’t go wrong with this one!!! I highly recommend reading!!!!

The Wife’s Revenge

by Deirdre Palmer

About the Book

Sometimes the lie is safer than the truth.

Fran made the biggest mistake of her life when she had an affair with Ben. Both families live in the village of Oakheart; their children are friends. Fran’s guilt shadows her days. But it’s no more than she deserves, or is it? At least she’s managed to protect her husband, Hector, from the harsh truth.

But for how long?

Tessa has left her troubles in the past and now has the perfect life. Ben might have his faults, but his life has not been easy. They need each other, and Tessa will do whatever it takes to eliminate any threats to her marriage.

Threats from women like Fran.

A cliff overlooks a disused chalk-pit. The locals call it High Heaven. It’s a place of secrets. And it’s where Oakheart newcomer Maria died. When Fran discovers a link between Maria and Ben, disturbing questions arise to which she has no way of knowing the answers.

Faced with an ultimatum from Tessa, time is running out for Fran. She’s scared, every minute of every day.

But where does the real danger lie?

Christie’s Review

4 STARS

The Wife’s Revenge by Deirdre Palmer is a tightly-woven psychological suspense and mystery! It will definitely keep you turning the pages rapidly until you come to the end and what an ending it is!!!!

The novel is written from two POVs….Fran and Tessa. Fran made a huge mistake having a brief affair with Ben. At least she does carry regret and guilt. So far, she has managed to keep the ugly truth from her husband, Hector, and their children.

Tessa and Ben have a complicated marriage, but she likes her life and wants nothing or no one to destroy the life she has created. Palmer lets her readers know from the beginning what sort of person Tessa is and exactly what she will do to keep Ben. However, the mystery is the death of a woman, Maria and her connection to Ben. How exactly did she die? Who was responsible? Palmer definitely kept me guessing. I would think I had it all figured out, but then I was proven wrong.

Not only was the mystery and suspense superb, but Palmer’s writing in general is phenomenal. It isn’t every day you have a suspense that is written with such detail that you find yourself in the scene with the characters.

The best part of the book for me was the end, or was it really the end or just the beginning for the characters involved?

Meet the Author

DP author pic

I live in Brighton with my husband and a tabby cat called Chester. After a career in public sector admin, most recently at the University of Brighton, it was time to stop dreaming about being a writer and actually do something about it! Fast forward to the present, and now I’m both traditionally published and self-published, with five women’s fiction novels under my own name, and five ‘cosy’ reads, writing as Zara Thorne. I’ve also published a book of short stories, most of which were previously published in The People’s Friend magazine. ‘The Wife’s Revenge’ is my first foray into the psychological suspense genre.
