New Review: The Judas Tree (Linked Series #1) by Susan Bacoyanis

21 Dec

Paint and Paper

Synopsis:

Mary Webster’s reaction to her lover’s betrayal is off the chart…

Mary seems like an ordinary 46-year-old divorcee, beginning a new life in rural England, but she has depths of pent-up pain, the result of 20 years of marital infidelities and abuse. All she needs is a trigger to unleash savage emotions.

When she becomes entangled with Jonas, a married man, Mary suddenly finds herself in the opposite role of the ‘other woman’. Jonas has a nasty streak, however, and taunts with the nursery rhyme ‘Mary, Mary quite contrary…’.

But when Mary uncovers Jonas’s web of seductive lies, betraying not only herself but his wife and several young village women, she plots her revenge and acts out the real meaning of the nursery rhyme…

As things go from bad to worse, Mary is driven over the edge of normality. Because Mary is not normal … she is damaged. Her only redeeming quality is her belief that she is acting for the greater good …

Susan Bacoyanis’s intriguing psychological thriller The Judas Tree is a chilling tale of multiple acts of betrayal and the consequences of greed. It has deep echoes of Penelope Mortimer’s angry woman classic of the Sixties, The Pumpkin Eater.

Wow! What a read!!! If you want a book that will keep you reading the pages into the night, this is the one for you!!!!

Mary has seen her fair share of heartbreak and betrayal. Her husband has left her and much of her time is taken up watching the neighbors, the handsome Jonas and his wife. She finds herself feeling things for this stranger that she knows is wrong. Yet, she can’t stop herself. The more involved she gets with him, his flaws become hard to ignore. He is an abuser and a betrayer. Something inside of her breaks and a brutal plot of revenge is born.

This book is a psychological read like I have never read before. It is a thriller, yet it is also a deep look inside of a woman who has been damaged. She really made me feel somewhat sorry for her and really believe that she is doing these really evil things for the greater good. She wants to make the abuser feel abused, and let me tell you, she really does a good job at that. One of my favorite aspects of this book was the parallels drawn between her and Mary Tudor. All of us know Mary did some really evil things, but I don’t think she was born evil. I think the world shaped her into the person she became. I think the same can be said of Mary in this book.

Make sure as you are reading to note the importance of the title and the parallels with Judas, himself.

If you want a book that will chill you to the bone and really make you think, The Judas Tree is a book not to be missed!!! This book was excellent from the beginning until the very end!!!!!

Facing A Twisted Judgment (Lies and Misdirection Book 2) by K.J. McGillick Blog Tour with Review

Facing A Twisted Judgment

Facing A Twisted Judgment

by K. J. McGillick

Synopsis

What happens when tunnel vision clouds a police investigation? Is it true that once you are labeled a person of interest you really are the prime suspect? Can you trust the legal system?  Probably not.

After a bitterly contested legal battle over inherited property, the hard-won art collection and its owner Samantha Bennington disappear. Both have vanished without a trace.

When blood spatter is discovered under the freshly painted wall of the room in which two of the paintings were hung, the theft becomes the opening act in a twisted tale of jealousy, revenge, and murder leading to a final judgment for all involved.

As the list of suspects narrows, the focus lands squarely on the husband. Some labeled Samantha’s husband a corrupt attorney, others an opportunist. Either way, he’s in the crosshairs of law enforcement and they are calling him a murderer. But is he the only viable suspect? What about the missing woman’s drug-addicted sister and her convicted felon brother? Both were furious over their loss at court and have more than enough reason to hate Samantha.

Guilty until proven innocent leaves Alexander Clarke facing a twisted judgment.

Wow!!!! What a book! I was completely intrigued from the beginning until the very end!!!!

Dalia has recently left her job, and she is thinking of what she wants to do with her life. She is even considering doing some traveling. However, a case has been dropped in her lap if she wants it. She loves a puzzle, and if there was a case that was a puzzle, it’s definitely this one. Samantha Bennington has disappeared along with art totaling around one hundred thirty million. Her husband, Alex, is becoming the prime suspect. There are other scenarios. Did she leave on her own with the art to start another life? Did her drug-addicted sister or her brother, a convicted felon have something to do with her disappearance? With Alex’s questionable reputation becoming the center of attention, the noose is tightening around his neck.

The synopsis just scratches the surface of the book. The writing is superb, and the characters are some of the most complex I have come across. The story is told from both Dalia and Alex’s POV, and that adds such depth to the plot. Every time I thought I knew who it was, I was proven wrong. The twist that kept coming certainly kept me guessing.

If you want a thought-provoking book that will keep you reading long into the night, you can’t go wrong with this one. Just when you think it’s over, you are in for an ending you will never see coming!!!!

Prepare to have your mind blown with this book! Jenny O’Brien had my mind and stomach in knots throughout this brilliantly written novel!!

This review will not be a lengthy one because I don’t want to spoil this wild ride for anyone. Victoria and Ness are stepsisters who have inherited a home in Holland from a complete stranger, and this is where the story really begins. Victoria wanted no part of this, but Ness was determined to go to Holland to see the home herself. Not long after being there, she disappears and Victoria has no choice but to go looking for her. What she finds only leads to more questions and a lot of danger.

This is a psychological thriller, but it’s also a story about two women thrown together when they are just children and how that affects them each individually and as sisters. That background figures pretty heavily into the storyline and adds even more to it in my opinion.

It most definitely is a thriller. I never knew what secret or twist was coming next. O’Brien did a fabulous job of that in the very beginning of the book! That was a brilliant hook! She also did a wonderful job of connecting the dots and the entire story itself…the cover even tied in. Art is connected the book also, and I loved how the illustrator reflected that in the cover.

I will warn you that once you begin reading, you won’t be able to do anything else until you have finished the very last page. Excellent read, and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author!!!!

Missed A PILGRIMAGE TO DEATH and want to catch up?

About A PILGRIMAGE TO DEATH (A Reverend Cici Gurule Mystery Book 1)

When Cici discovers a body in the forest, she’s shocked to realize the victim’s wounds are identical to the ones that killed her sister a year ago. Now she’s embroiled in the takedown of a massive criminal operation, and the stakes couldn’t be higher…

“A wholly absorbing gumshoe tale elevated by an extraordinary detective” (Kirkus Reviews starred review).

Someone murdered her sister. And shot her dog. The killer won’t stop until she’s dead, too.

Cici finds a dead body while hiking in the Santa Fe National Forest. The situation deteriorates when she discovers the victim bears similar stab wounds to those that ended her twin sister’s life a year ago.

Then, her identical twin sister infiltrates her dreams.

All of a sudden, Cici and her dogs must dodge arrows, bullets, and even a demon truck—all while she grapples with the knowledge that her sister was on the trail of a deep-rooted criminal operation. Worse, her twin’s death was much more sinister than a random act of violence.

Now, as she follows the clues her sister drops in her dreams, the criminals want Cici out of the way. Permanently.

A Pilgrimage to Death is a high-octane thriller. Fans of Ruth Ware, J.D. Robb, and Angela Marsons will love Alexa’s Padgett’s new edge-of-your-seat novel.

EXCERPT

Prologue

I died yesterday, or so I’ve been told.

Yesterday is the day my life changed but how or why is still a mystery. There are things I know and there are things that they’ve told me but I can’t seem to trust any of it.

I know I’m a woman but I don’t know my age. I know how to hold a cup in the same way I know it’s rude to stick the end of a knife in my mouth. So, somewhere along the way, someone cared enough to drill manners into me. Those are the things I know, the things I can trust but as for the rest…

They tell me I’m in Holland but can I believe them? I don’t remember if I’m Dutch but I also don’t remember if I’m not. I can’t speak Dutch. I’ve been trying all morning but can one lose a language overnight? I seem to have lost everything else. Who knows? Maybe I took the wrong train or something and just rolled up in the wrong city. That would make sense except that it’s not just my sense of place that’s missing. It’s my sense of everything. I have no name, no age and no identity. Yesterday I died and today I’m still here.

They’ve left me alone now while they try to puzzle out what to do and in the meantime I’m going to try to remember stuff. I don’t know how long they’ll leave me alone but I need to take this opportunity to come up with some answers to all the questions they’ve been throwing at me like who the hell I am.

Slipping out of bed I recoil as bare feet meets cold tiles, but that’s not going to stop me. Pulling the back of the hospital gown closed in an effort to retain some degree of dignity, I shuffle over to the bathroom and then the mirror only to stare into the face of a stranger.

It doesn’t matter what I look like or that I’m suffering from the worst case of bed-head known to man. It doesn’t matter that my eyes are green or that my hair is that shade of nondescript mouse that keeps colourists in business. The only thing that matters is my reflection, which holds no clues as to my identity. I’m a stranger to them. I’m a stranger to me.

My body holds a clue though – just one.

I push up my sleeve again to stare at the tattoo on my arm. The tattoo puzzles me. It’s not me, or part of me or who I think I am and yet it’s there, a large indelible letter V.

I have no idea what it stands for. Oh, I’m not stupid or anything or, at least I don’t think I am. I can’t quote which exams I’ve passed or if indeed I’ve ever attended school but I do know V stands for victory. But what does it mean to me? Am I victorious? Am I making a statement about something? It must be important because it’s the only tattoo I have. It’s also the only clue.

I’m tired now. My eyelids collapse over my eyes even as I struggle to shift them upwards as I remember the cocktail the nurse told me to swallow like a good girl. I want everything to go away. I want to hide under the blankets and forget. I’ve already forgotten…
