To where she grew up and fell in love with her childhood friend, Leo Fernandez. Fully intent on selling the island and finally putting the past behind her, Isla is soon compelled to put together the pieces of what really happened on a fateful night ten-years before. She begins to believe that in going to prison, Leo hadn’t only been shielding her from the same fate. She also starts to suspect that her late Aunt hadn’t been entirely honest in sending her away under the guise of recriminations. Who had they both been protecting and why?

All-Time Favorite Read

A Top Read of 2019

Island in the Sun by Janice Horton is one of those rare gems of a book to just savor and enjoy! It’s one of those books that I read each and every word…devouring them! That’s why it is an all-time favorite read and a top read of 2019 for me!

Isla Ashton is a very successful jewellry designer in the UK. She is looking towards the future, having left her painful past on a beautiful island in the Caribbean. However, the past comes roaring back when she discovers she has inherited her aunt’s island, yes an entire island! She plans to sell and get out before confronting her past in the form of her past love, Leo. But, that is easier said than done when she finds her aunt has left her some surprises she never expected.

Both Isla and Leo are adults who have made decisions about their lives based on things that happened in their past. Neither of them are perfect by any means, especially their stubborness. That just made them more human and easier for me to connect with. As much as this book is about them and their journey to find one another again, it’s also a great deal about Kate. What a character this woman was….talk about a flawed character, she was definitely one. There were times I thought she was incredibly selfish. Yet, I somehow came to love her! She was so complicated and so human.

The book was incredibly well-written, and the writer, Janice Horton, is so talented in creating such a beautiful setting. I could see the blue seas, feel the sand between my toes, smell and feel the balmy salty breezes. It’s not very often I come across a writer that can create such a visual setting, one that I find myself completely immersed in.

Make sure to read the section about the writer herself. She is quite intriguing, and I loved how she finds the locales for her books!

This is a perfect book for the spring and summer. It has it all…great characters, a family saga full of secrets and discoveries, and a gorgeous setting. You can’t get much better than that! The epilogue also contains a surprise. So…I’m hoping there might be more to the story that will result in a future book!

Book Two – CONFESSIONS OF A REFORMED TOM CAT

A Romantic Comedy Bestseller

Confessions of a Reformed Tom Cat is a standalone, lighthearted small town romance.

I, Thomas Clifford Donnely, am a manwhore.

You can call me Tom Cat. I’ve been told I’m irresistible to women. Like catnip for a different kind of pussy-cat.

This is the story about how I lost my wingman, broke all my own rules, and found myself falling in love.

When my sister’s best friend returns to Whidbey Island and propositions me for a one-night stand, I break one of my biggest rules–no fooling around with my sisters’ friends. It’s just sex, nothing more. That’s what I do and do very well.

Hailey King is more than a match for Tom’s flirtations. She’s known him most of her life and has heard the rumors about his “skills” for years. When her perfectly planned future falls apart, will the last man she should ever fall for turn out to be more than a one-night stand?

What happens when “just sex” isn’t enough?

Confessions of a Reformed Tom Cat is a best friend’s brother romance and the second book in the Wingmen world of standalone lighthearted, small town romances.

Book Three – ANYTHING BUT LOVE

Another wingman bites the dust in this enemies-to-lovers standalone, small town romance.

For the past year, I’ve been working my butt off to start my own coffee company on Whidbey.

A weekend in Cabo with sun, tiny bikinis, and vacation hook-ups is exactly the kind of tension relief I need.

What I don’t need is a bruised jaw, having to bribe my way out of jail, a hellion set on ruining my life, and my mother seeing a picture of my assets on “The Twitter.”

Caribou Caldwell is my worst nightmare.
Unfortunately, she’s also the star of my sexiest dreams.

What happens when a small town guy becomes the focus of a million fantasies? As Erik Kelso navigates his sudden notoriety, will his feelings for Cari turn out to be anything but love?

Anything but Love is the third book in the Wingmen series. All the books are interconnected but can be read as standalones.

Book Four – BETTER LOVE

A second chance standalone romantic comedy from USA Today best selling author Daisy Prescott featuring a sexy silver fox.

Dan has three great loves in his life: solitude, pizza, and Roslyn Porter.

When one of my wingmen needs help, I’ll do anything for him, including calling in a favor with the one person I swore I’d never speak to again.

Not after I walked away from that life five years ago and ditched the trappings of my success. The keyword being trap.

I left it all behind.

Including her.

Now the ambitious, brilliant, talented, and undeniably beautiful Roslyn Porter is back in my life. I’m not the same person she knew. I’m trying to be a better man.

Maybe that old song got it right.

Maybe love can be better the second time around.

Better Love is a standalone second chance romance featuring Dan Ashland and the fourth book in the interconnected Wingmen series.

Book Five – SMALL TOWN SCANDAL

“Clever, original, heartfelt.” Mary Dubé, USA Today

Another wingmen meets his match and this time it’s scandalous.

Carter Kelso is a man with a plan. And goats.
Ashley Kingston is a woman with a reputation.
Can he earn back her love before their past catches up with them and destroys everything?

On the island, my last name is synonymous with scandal. With a notorious father and a famous brother, I’ve been on the sidelines of our small town’s gossip circle for years. Nothing to see here. Just a man and his goats, happily going through life. Not a care in the world. Too bad it’s all lies.

I’m tired of trying not to be in love with Ashley Kingston, our very own island jezebel. They think they know her. They’re wrong.

Reputations can be deceiving. I should know.

Small Town Scandal is a second chance romance standalone novel and the fifth book in the Wingmen series of interconnected standalones. Characters and storylines from previous books do appear in this book.

5 STARS

The Last Thing She Said was a great blend of family, mystery, and supernatural elements. It is the story of three very different sisters who will be brought back together because of their grandmother’s premonition from years ago.

The book is told through each of the sisters POVS throughout different periods of time. Each sister is very different from the other. They were compared to chalk, cheese, and chocolate. Rebecca is the mother figure who took care of her sisters after their parents decided to go to the US to live. She is empathetic and sweet, yet she is stronger than even she thinks she is. Leia is her twin who can be hard. She, like Rebecca, is strong. Yet, she is wicked smart, and she is under enormous pressure because of her intelligence. She has never yet discovered who she is exactly. Naomi is the youngest. She is the most vulnerable. She is sweet and innocent, oftentimes, making her naive.

Through each chapter, I learned what each one is struggling with, and their grandmother made a prediction on her deathbed, hence the title, “The Last Thing She Said,” that will force them to face each of those struggles. It may even make them appreciate their differences and maybe even enjoy one another again.

The fourth major character was their grandmother. I loved how the writer brought her back into the story because she really was the driving force in the book. What an amazing woman she was!!!

There were two great bonuses for me….the ending. You will know exactly what I’m talking about when you read the book. The second was the author’s section at the end. It was great to see how her idea developed into this fantastic novel!

Convinced that Ruby’s lonely, especially after discovering the truth about her lost love, Callie’s determined to give Ruby’s romantic story the happy ending it deserves. After all, it’s never to late to let love in again. Or is it?
A heartwarming Christmas story of finding new love, and the courage to revisit a love that was lost long ago.

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

If you are looking for that special Christmas read, then look no further than Callie’s Christmas Wish. It will definitely put you in the holiday spirit!!!!

Callie and a good majority of the characters were introduced in the book, Raving for Rhys. This one is a continuation of sorts of Callie and Rhys’s romance. It’s nearing Christmas, but not everyone is enjoying the magical season. Callie is very happy with Rhys, but his ex is causing trouble. She won’t allow Callie to spend anytime with Rhys’s daughter,, and she seems to have Rhys on a short leash, even though they aren’t together. If that wasn’t enough, Callie’s jerk ex, Tony, has shown back up causing trouble. Rhys grandmother, Ruby, is somewhat down in the dumps since her friend, Iris, is now engaged. Anyone who knows Callie knows she is determined to not let any of this ruin Christmas.

When she spends more time with Ruby, she learns more about her past, and this is where the book’s focus shifts to Ruby and her own happily ever after. I knew Ruby had a colorful past, and I was right. I loved discovering more about her and her lost love.

Redland manages to juggle several characters’ stories at one time, and she does it flawlessly. What she gives us is a magical book about love, reconciliation, and second chances, all while showing us it’s never too late, or you’re never too old to find love!!!!

If the book wasn’t good enough, Redland also gives us insight into her writing process and how this story developed….that made it even better. So, find a quiet place with a warm cup of tea or coffee and settle in to read this most wonderful book!!!!!

The Barn IMG_0956

Q & A with Chrissie Bradshaw:

How did you come up with the idea for this book?

My novels are stand alone yet they are linked because they are set around one or two families in a Northumbrian village called Dunleith. This is a village near the border to Scotland where ‘reivers’ from either side were bandits and it was a bit like the wild west so characters are hardy.  Some of the characters of book one come into book two. They can be read in either order.

The whole idea for ‘The Barn of Buried Dreams’ arose because Heather Douglas was a ‘best friend’ to Cleo Moon in ‘A Jarful of Moondreams’ and, because she is quite a strong character, she wanted her own story. I gave her equal billing with her sister Erin in ‘The Barn of Buried Dreams’ because Heather is a bit like Marmite and Erin is just lovely and, as sisters, their stories intertwine.

(Marmite is a salty yeast spread that we eat in the UK and you either love it or detest it)

What was your favorite thing about each character?

Heather first appears in a small role in my first novel. She is a fiesty drama queen who demanded a story of her own. Remember the Marmite comparison? You love her or you want to shake her.I really put her through the mill in ‘The Barn of Buried Dreams’ and she came through. My favorite thing about her is that her heart is in the right place.

Heather’s sister, Erin has had a wonderful life and then been hit hard by the loss of her mother and a break up with her fiancé. I love her thoughtfulness and her strength of character that shines through in the end.

Jackson McGee my Texan hero is my favorite kind of man. Good-natured, good-looking, strong yet vulnerable. Have you seen Scott Eastwood, Clint Eastwood’s son? He’d be perfect in the role of Jackson.

Do you have a playlist you listen to when writing?

I do! I played Fleetwood Mac’s version of ‘How do you hang on to a dream?’ a lot. One of the characters is in musical theatre so I played, ‘Les Mis’ quite a bit. Lastly, I played music from ‘Nashville’ because I love it and my Texan Jackson McGee loves it too. I’d have Deacon Claybourne (Charles Estes) playing Jackson’s dad. What a father-in-law.

Any favorite foods/drinks you like while writing?

Black tea with a biscuit (cookie) or two.

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always liked reading and writing my own stories came from that. I knew I’d write novels one day. In my late twenties and thirties, I juggled my career with being a single parent and my dreams of writing novels, finding my ideal man or travelling had to be put on hold. My energy was used up with the school run, a challenging job and after school activities. Luckily, I loved my job and loved my daughter so I was tired but happy and fulfilled. Those childhood years are precious and we can’t grab them back even though we sometimes think the summer holidays are neverending! My three dreams were buried away but eventually they all saw daylight. My younger self would be amazed to know that I’d be a happily remarried, well- travelled author, one day.

What made me knuckle down to writing a novel was a bloody great storm in my G cup. That kick started it all! I was fit and healthy so I surprised when I found out I had an aggressive breast cancer but I didn’t ever think ‘why me?’  Why not when it happens to 1 in 8 of us women? I felt numb as I prepared for the treatments and prepared for the worst scenario. Would my time be far shorter than I’d ever imagined?

Secretly( I didn’t want to upset my family) I set about writing a bucket list. I’m good at writing lists but not so great at carrying them out! This was the most important list I’d written. I thought about writing and the pleasure it gave me so that went on the list. I thought I would quite like to do a lot of things but nothing compared to writing. My real regret was  not ever getting down to writing those novels in my head so my bucket list was short. Write a novel!

As soon as my ‘chemo fog’ lifted, I got to work on an idea I had been playing around with for far too long. At that point, I didn’t care if my novel was published or not as long as I finished it. That was my promise to myself.

What are some are your favorite reads?

My favourite reads include ‘Me Before You’ and anything by JoJo Moyes.

‘Rachel’s Holiday ‘ and every book by the brilliant Marian Keyes.

Jane Fallon, Jane Green and Lisa Jewell are also writers I love. I devour their novels as soon as they are released.

A giveaway. A read, a cuppa and a treat.

Sweet, enjoyable read with memorable characters!

Autumn Antics centers around Bella. This is the second book in a series, but it can be read as a standalone!

Bella is a part-time hand model, but she loves her beloved island home. She runs a tiny antique business, and she rents her home out to two lodgers. She has had a crush on one of her lodgers,Jack, for years. She is hoping the two can maybe discover a relationship outside the bounds of friendship, but there are about to be a lot of obstacles put in their path.

Jack’s ex shows up trying to get back together. Then, her long lost mother returns hoping to repair the relationship she broke years ago. If that wasn’t enough, reality star, Megan Knight, shows up as well. With all these distractions, will she and Jack ever get their chance?

I found the storyline very enjoyable. The setting was absolutely stunning. The author did an amazing job of taking right there to that beautiful island. The characters are quirky, and I loved them. The romance between Jack and Bella was everything I hoped it would be and the wait was well worth it.

Christmas at the Little Duck Pond Cafe

Christmas at The Little Duck Pond Cafe

by Rosie Green

Synopsis

Fen has always hated being the centre of attention.
She loves her new job, working behind the scenes at the Little Duck Pond Cafe and baking the scrumptious cakes that have helped its reputation soar. But frankly, she’d rather scrub the public toilet floor with a toothbrush than have to come out and talk to the customers.
She’s always been happy to stay in the background as long as she has a good supply of books to escape into. That’s her kind of romance – the fictional sort where she can read about other people taking a chance on love, but she doesn’t have to risk her own heart.
But that was before Ethan Fox arrived in the village and turned her world upside down. Ethan is a leading light in the local amateur dramatics theatre company and Fen knows he’s way out of her league.
But when the popular village Christmas pantomime hits a crisis, Fen and Ethan find themselves thrown together. Can Fen overcome her shyness and find the courage to step on stage and save the day?

Rosie Green has created a wonderful series with great characters I have come to absolutely love! I have LOVED all of the books, but this one is by far my favorite so far!!!

This one Fen’s story, and boy does she have a story to tell. I have always loved Fen, and I can relate to her. I have always been much quieter than my friends, so I can understand Fen’s struggle with fitting in. It takes a great deal to step out of your comfort zone, and I was so happy that she had reached a point to speak up for herself and try new things. She was incredibly talented and intelligent. I wanted her to take the opportunities that were in front of her. I was so glad she had someone like Rob in her corner that was so supportive of her and urged her to take a chance on things. She does find herself attracted to two very different men, Ethan and Rob. She has always had a crush on Ethan, and he is finally noticing her. Rob has been steadfast in his support of her, but she isn’t sure if he sees her as anything more than a friend. She will have to look deeper into each man to discover the one she belongs with.

Even though this is Fen’s story, I was excited to see the characters I have come to love from the earlier novels. Jaz and Ellie are going through some of their own issues with their boyfriends. We do get some insight into that, but it never takes away from Fen’s story. I got a deeper look into her complicated relationship with her mother. This is an important part of the book as her mother has played a big part in the adult she has become.

This is really one of my favorite series. I love the setting, and I always feel like I’m a part of the story myself. The characters are different from one another, and I really like quirky characters. One thing is a bit different in this book. There is a question in this book that isn’t quite answered, and I see that the next book in the series is about Fen as well. Don’t fear…no cliffhanger! However, I am intrigued how Fen will react when she discovers the answer to her unanswered question!

Rosie Green has been scribbling stories ever since she was little. Back then they were rip-roaring adventure tales with a young heroine in perilous danger of falling off a cliff or being tied up by ‘the baddies’. Thankfully, Rosie has moved on somewhat, and now much prefers to write romantic comedies that melt your heart and make you smile, with really not much perilous danger involved at all, unless you count the heroine losing her heart in love.

Rosie’s brand new series of novellas is centred on life in a village café. The first two stories in the series are: Spring at The Little Duck Pond Cafe and Summer at The Little Duck Pond Café.
