Or so she thinks. When the most damaging secret of all is revealed, her final hope dies and she’s left with no other recourse. She must run.

Sixteen months ago, Alekzander Tarasov made the mistake of his life when he annihilated his relationship with his soulmate. At the time, protecting her was his only thought. No Place to Hide (Ultimate Vengeance)

No. She couldn’t get Alekzander into trouble with the law simply because he’d stopped loving her and had chosen to move on without telling her first. She should. She should spill every little secret she had, not that there were many. But she never would. Despite everything, he was her daughter’s father.

Then again, she thought, feeling ill, if it came down to it and she had to choose between keeping Lekzi in her life and Alekzander’s freedom, well, there was no choice. But until then…

“That would not work because I was never personally aware of anything he or his family did that might have been illegal. For all I know, their intimidating reputation could have been created simply to make themselves feel special.”

She saw Justin’s head turn her way but didn’t meet the look because then he’d see she was lying through her teeth. He tapped his thumbs on the steering wheel.

“This may sound insensitive, but why didn’t you go back home to your family when things fell apart here?”

Wishing he could drive faster, she answered honestly. “I am an only child, and, as you know, my parents are gone. But even if I had someone there, at that time, I could not afford to go home.” He frowned in confusion, so she went on, her cheeks heating. “While I was with Alekzander, I did not work, or go back to school as I had planned. When I left Russia, I dropped out of my fourth year of university,” she explained. “But I had every intention of applying to colleges here so I could finish my liberal arts degree. I had planned to go into the field of Human Resources, but, as I said, I did not.” She moved on because she could hear how defensive she was beginning to sound. “Alekzander enjoyed having me at home, and I enjoyed being there for him.”

Shame coated that last bit, revealing how little she thought of the decision she’d made back then. She should never have given up her independence. She suspected that had much to do with what had happened.

“So he kept you broke and dependent on him?” Justin questioned as they came out of the tunnel and traveled the relatively empty streets of Queens heading for Sunnyside.

“No, of course not. He was very generous. I had credit cards and a bank account that I could use freely.”

Feeling small, she wanted to add that she wasn’t a parasite, but hearing herself, she found she couldn’t. Her and Alekzander’s first real fight had been about her working to save the money she would need to return to school. He’d convinced her it wasn’t something that had to be decided right then and had quieted her protests by saying they’d discuss her education later. It had always been later. And she’d let him get away with discounting her future. Had she not been such a pushover, so eager to please him, would things have been different?

“I did not use his money after things ended,” she murmured.

“Why? Any other woman, especially a pregnant one, would have withdrawn a large chunk of cash—especially because as a Tarasov he could certainly afford it—and lived off it until she was back on her feet. Why didn’t you?”

“Because I did not want his money. I did not want anything from him.” She shifted, grinding her teeth at the warble in her voice. It signified weakness, and that embarrassed her. “Anyway,” she said, sneaking in another common word Americans used regularly. “How could I go home when I did not have enough money to buy an airline ticket, to rent an apartment once I got there, and to live until I found a job? I could not. So I stayed here where it had already become familiar. And Lekzi and I have done fine without him. Our life is simple, but that is all we need.” She might not have two homes and a private jet, but despite having to save most of her earnings, she was providing for her daughter, and she was proud of that.

When they eventually turned onto her street, she tried not to think about what it would cost her, financially and emotionally, to start over again. Another new city, no friends, no job, no place to live. And it would be so much worse this time because she was dragging her innocent daughter along, making her baby suffer for the sins of her parents…

The world stilled for a split second before Sacha felt the impact of her reality hit with the force of a punch.

A group of well-dressed men milled about in front of her apartment building. Two were on the sidewalk speaking with a uniformed NYPD officer while another two stood in front of the main entrance of the three-story walk-up.

Oh, God. “I told you.” Her whisper was eerily accepting. “He has come for me.”

Synopsis

Sienna Diaz is everyone’s favorite “fat” funny lady. The movie studio executives can’t explain it, but her films are out-grossing all the fit and trim headliners and Hollywood’s most beautiful elite. The simple truth is, everyone loves plus-sized Sienna.

But she has a problem, she can’t read maps and her sense of direction is almost as bad as her comedic timing is stellar. Therefore, when Sienna’s latest starring role takes her to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park she finds herself continually lost while trying to navigate the backroads of Green Valley, Tennessee. Much to her consternation, Sienna’s most frequent savior is a ridiculously handsome, charming, and cheeky Park Ranger by the name of Jethro Winston.

Sienna is accustomed to high levels of man-handsome, so it’s not Jethro’s chiseled features or his perfect physique that make Sienna stutter. It’s his southern charm. And gentlemanly manners. And habit of looking at her too long and too often.

Sienna has successfully navigated the labyrinth of Hollywood heartthrobs. But can she traverse the tenuous trails of Tennessee without losing her head? Or worse, her heart?

Synopsis

Max…

I’ve got my looks, my charm, and well, a smile that melts panties. My charm only gets me so far though. Apparently, that limit is the law.
I don’t even care when the courts finally give me a punishment for vandalising the church property; in my defence, I didn’t know it was a church.
They’ve got me serving three months of community service working at the local church’s Salvation shelter.
They think three months here will change me; that I will change my delinquent ways. If only they knew… nothing could ever tame me.
I was taught at an early age that love destroys you. I accept that I’ll never love and I’ll never be loved.
What I’ve learned though is that love is also your greatest weakness; it’s why that one four letter word will never leave my mouth.

I’m Lake Miller…

For the past year of my life I’ve never stayed anywhere longer than a few weeks. I’d sleep at different homeless shelters, park benches or anywhere I could find a dry place to sleep; the only belongings I have are carried in my backpack. I left everything else behind.

Now I’ve ended up in Coldenshire; tired of sleeping on the streets, tired of hurting and tired of eating scraps of food.
So when a chance encounter for a job at the local church shelter popped up, I took it. I know my time here is running out and that I should run, especially when the town bad boy, who is sexy as sin and annoying as hell, walks through the doors thinking he’s God’s gift to women.
He thinks life is a joke, that his smart mouth hides the pain behind his eyes, but he’s so off track I’m surprised he’s not lost.
I see the real him, and I don’t want anything to do with him, but he makes it hard when he’s always in my face. I have my own pain, my own loss and grief to suffer through; I don’t need anyone else’s.
I don’t need anything.
Not love, not sympathy, and certainly not forgiveness, after all, I killed my brother.
I’m a murderer.

christie review 4 and a half stars
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Max by Lisa Helen Gray! It was a quick, enjoyable read that had a little bit of everything I love in a book…steamy romance, a sexy male, a sassy female, with a bit of mystery thrown in. All were combined flawlessly to make this a great read.
I was intrigued by the first words of the book where I met Max. He’s a sarcastic, cocky lad, but he thinks his good looks and killer smile will always keep him out of trouble…boy does he have a lesson to learn. That smile isn’t working this time. He has to complete months of community service to keep himself out of jail. He meets Lake that night at the police station when she arrives with his grandfather’s girlfriend. He instantly is attracted to her, and she is attracted to him, but she will never admit it. The two begin spending a lot of time while volunteering at the church’s shelter, and Lake is now living with the family. Their friendship develops slowly as Lake can’t stand his attitude from the first instance she meets him even though she can’t stop thinking about him. As he continually pursues her, he wants her in his bed, but he soon finds himself wanting much more. Will he ever give up, or will she ever give into him? Either way, be prepared for major sparks between these two!
The storyline and the character development were awesome! I read in her acknowledgments that Gray really walked a fine line when creating Max. She wanted him to be cocky yet have a sensitive side, and she more than succeeded. He has such a naughty mouth and comes across as a cocky player, but as I got to know him just like Lake did, I realized there was much more to him than a gorgeous face and body. Deep down, he’s a sweetheart, and he uses his bravado to deal with his pain. He runs from relationships because his parents broke each other, and he doesn’t want to turn out like they did. Lake is just running period. She has something very painful in her past and blames herself. My heart broke for her as she felt like she deserved no happiness. Her past is the mystery that keeps this book moving at a perfect pace. I loved the banter between the two of them, and I love that Lake can cut Max down to his knees when he needs it. And, he makes her laugh which she certainly doesn’t do enough of. They are perfect together, and you realize when these two finally decide to be together that it will turn the earth on its axis.
Max is the first book in the series that I have read. I believe you can read this as a standalone, but I wish I had begun at the beginning. However, seeing all the characters from previous books makes me eager to read the rest of the story. I would highly recommend reading if you love a book with sexy, hilarious banter, some angst, and a big, wonderful family that supports each other. Looking forward to Maverick’s book soon!

Someone had to do this, and it sure as hell wasn’t going to be Adam. I breathed in and closed my eyes, only opening them as I exhaled and put one foot in front of the other. The key was hot from the heat of my body as it shook its way into the door knob. The metal clunked, and the wooden door swung open, leaving me staring at the empty room once filled with happiness. My eyes rushed over it as my mind flashed with memories, and my feet somehow continued in–all the way to Bobby’s bedroom door. My chest constricted and stars popped in my vision as I swung it open. I found myself blinking rapidly as my eyes wandered the room, stopping on the dresser where frames contained pictures of Adam and me, Bobby and me, the three of us, and then Tara and Bobby. My feet yet again propelled me forward, but I stopped as I breathed in, choking on the air.
My body warmed as my chin trembled and I breathed in again.
There it was again.
Bobby. The room smelled like him.
My eyelashes fluttered against my cheeks as the scent encircled me. Bath and Body Works’ Twilight Woods. The cologne we picked together when we were twelve. For fifteen years he’d worn it, even after Tara told him she hated it.
My eyes opened and moved to the hockey jersey hanging half out of a drawer–exactly where he left it that morning. My knees shook, and I found myself sitting on the bed staring at it. I reached forward, and the worn fabric embraced me as I brought it up to my chest. I pursed my lips together as the tears gathered and I pulled the jersey over my head, engulfing myself in his scent–it was embedded into this clothes despite constant washing. In my memories, his laughter carried through the room. It wasn’t the first time I wore one of his jerseys. I closed my eyes and curled into a ball on his bed.
“So you remember it too?” Bobby’s voice reached my ears, and the darkness behind my lids drifted away, parting until it was him and me in the tree house. I sat up on the bed, looking at him as he smirked at me from the edge of it. “See the thing is, I imagined it like this–you know? You practically naked;” his teeth ran over his bottom lip as his eyes ran up my legs, barely covered by my sleeping shorts. “in my jersey.”
He moved forward and his hand cupped my chin as his thumb caught a tear. “You weren’t crying in my fantasies, though. You cry so much now, Riv. I don’t want you to cry.”
I closed my eyes as my vision blurred from the weight of them, burdened by the false warmth of his touch.
“I’ve lost myself just as much as I’ve lost you,” I whispered, trying to memorize the feeling of his soft hands against my skin. So caring and loving when everything seemed so cold now. “All my dreams are shattered without you.”
Bobby’s hands reached for my face, turning it, so I was looking at him. He was beginning to waiver in and out, and panic burned its way up my throat.
He was going to leave.
But this was so real.
“Please don’t leave,” I said, and the tears and clenching of my throat made the words as physically painful as they were emotional.
“I thought all my dreams shattered when I found out Adam was with you–and it was over for me–that I didn’t have any more chances. My dreams realigned, though, Riv–they changed, refit into even better dreams. I expect you to do the same,” he said, and he was fading faster; his body just a wisp and his touch a mere warmth with nothing substantial behind it.
“But Adam–“
“You’ll figure out what to do, it might be hard, but in the end, it will work out. You and him are what’s left of me. Remember that. Together you make me whole,” he said, and his lips reached for my cheek, sending heat through my body as he disappeared.
“Bobby!” I yelled, and suddenly I was sitting straight up in the bed sobbing, the warmth of his lips against my cheek a stinging pain. I leaned back, pulling my knees to my chest and cried until the darkness consumed me.
This time, Bobby’s warmth didn’t return.

Excerpt

I couldn’t quite make eye contact with Ethan since the last time I came back to the apartment with Owen before Thanksgiving break. We caught Ethan naked in the hallway—on a date and thinking they had the place to themselves for a night. I was no prude, but seeing junk not belonging to my boyfriend turned me three shades of red. I hadn’t even seen Owen’s, but I . . . felt it . . . a lot. On my leg, against my stomach, sometimes rubbing my back if he was holding me from behind. Why I was so bashful I couldn’t say, especially since I didn’t have a cherry to pop. But it was only one guy and only one time, shortly before he shredded my heart and then stomped all over it. Even though I couldn’t make my virginity grow back, I wasn’t quite ready to go there again. However, not being ready for sex had absolutely nothing to do with wanting it. Our time together always ended with a scorching kiss and groping against the nearest wall. Owen’s Southern gentility was probably wearing thin these past few weeks.

“Owen? The movie starts in a half hour!” I called as I strolled down the hallway.

“Hey, City. Give me a minute, practice ran late.” Owen had just stepped out of the shower and was dripping freaking wet. The V on his hips disappeared into a towel cinched around his tapered waist. Water traveled from the stray tangled locks at his neck and trickled down over his ripped chest and his abs before disappearing into the bunched up material at his waist. I licked my parched lips and tried to remember how to speak. How many damn abs did he have? Six? Eight? I was gaping at a wet, half naked Owen while the corner of the bastard’s mouth turned up in a smirk. I didn’t have the faculties to scowl back. My tongue didn’t want to work unless it was tracing the water trails across Owen’s body.

“Keep looking at me like that, baby. We won’t be going anywhere tonight.”

FM 3christie review 5 star aWOW!!! Just WOW!!! I can honestly say that Finding Me touched me in ways I haven’t experienced before…maybe because I could totally relate to Bella. I grew up without a father that wasn’t always involved in my life. And, I found my Owen who taught me what love really was and still does every day. I also found a Lucas who became the “Dad” I had always craved. So, as you can imagine this book really spoke to my heart as I’m sure it did to many other readers!

Bella is Samantha’s and Lucas’s daughter, and this is her story, of her finding her place in the world. I adored Bella and Owen. Owen was the perfect guy, loving, loyal, supportive, wrapped up in a sexy package with a sultry, southern accent. He never wavered from Bella even when she tried to push him away because of her trust issues. She could be frustrating when she did that, and I wanted her to quit selling herself short. Although, I could totally understand what made her do that. I was so glad I got see how Sam and Lucas were doing. Lucas is still a sexy Superman!

There isn’t too much angst in their romance, just enough to make the story great. The romance was steamy and very emotional. I could feel myself falling under Owen’s spell just like Bella did. I loved the fact that it was a romance yet it was a journey of a young girl letting go of her past, appreciating what she has, and growing into the woman she was meant to be…a woman who no longer lets her past pain of rejection determine her future. It’s also a story about what makes a family a family, not just blood and DNA, but the love that each person has for the other. I have to add that the epilogue was EPIC, probably the best I’ve read in a while! Another great book by Stephanie Rose!!!! If you want to read Sam and Lucas’s story, Always You, it’s fantastic!!!!

Foreword

Penning a foreword is something that I can now cross off on my bucket list. This book is a perfect fit for me. Why you ask? My Dad is a Yank, aka American and my Mum is a Limey, aka Brit. Yes, I’m very blessed to have my feet in both worlds.

The co-authored The American and The Brit is seamlessly written and I appreciate this as I’ve collaborated on four books with my son, Adam and can understand how difficult these type projects can be.

Hilarious from start to finish, you will surely be entertained. Phoebe and Liz draw you in from the first page with their relatable situational dilemmas.

I wish the authors, a real American and a real Brit much success, what am I saying? It will be a success.
