“Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt.”

What a wonderful, uplifting story that proves it’s never too late to go after your dreams!

Emily is a woman who likes the finer things in life and really has the life a lot of people would want. She is a stewardess and travels to great locations and a great boyfriend. However, her life is turned upside down when her boyfriend breaks up with her. She waited for years for him to finally ask her to be his wife, and now he has left her. She decides to completely upend her life and pursue her dream of becoming an actress at 40. This is the beginning of a journey full of ups and downs! I loved taking this trip with Emily.

Emily is a woman I’m sure a lot of women can relate to, especially us women who are in our 40s. It is a time of change no matter whether you have children leaving the nest or as Emily, you have a major life change. I admired her tenacity. She was reaching for dreams not many women would even attempt. As the title suggest, it really is the start of something wonderful for her. She is a completely different woman by the end of the book!!!

I’m pretty picky when it comes to audiobooks as I really have to like the narrator. The author, herself, narrated this one…she did a fabulous job. She really brought Emily alive for me. She made me really connect with her.

If you are looking for a great book with a great narrator, you don’t want to miss this one!!!!

Hate Bale

by Stephanie Dagg

Synopsis

Grumbling guests and escaping piglets are precisely what Martha doesn’t need. She’s already struggling to run a holiday cottage and a rather large smallholding single-handedly. Since her husband Mark died, three years ago, her rural property in France, beautiful as it is, has become an increasingly heavy millstone around her neck.

So whilst she’s horrified to stumble across a corpse at the local farm supplies shop, it does at least distract her from her own woes. Best friend Lottie, the cheese to Martha’s chalk, swoops in to offer moral support, and encourages Martha to join her in some unofficial sleuthing. Meanwhile, police officer Philippe Prudhomme, a former fellow chess-player of Mark’s, undertakes a rather more professional investigation.

However, despite everyone’s efforts the killer remains at large. And when more bodies (one and a bit, to be precise) come Martha’s way, it definitely feels like he’s closing in on her…

There’s suspense, humour, and excitement in this entertaining cosy mystery set in the French countryside.

Very enjoyable cozy mystery….it had all my favorite things, mystery, humor, friendship, love, and second chances!

Martha suffered the loss of her husband three years ago, and she is trying to find her way again. She is busy with her farm and her animals. She definitely isn’t expecting to find a murder victim in the local farm supplies shop. She and her best friend, Lottie, decide to do some investigating on their own, not knowing it will put Martha’s life in danger. Luckily, police officer, Philippe, is also on the case. He may also be harboring some feelings for Martha. Will she be able to allow him into her heart? What ensues, is a mystery filled with humor and a possible romance.

The mystery was first rate, keeping me guessing every step of the way.I loved Lottie and Martha’s friendship…all of us need that kind of friendship! It was so enjoyable watching these two ladies try to solve the murder mystery! The are great sleuthing partners.

I also loved the relationship between Philippe and Martha. They have a bit of history as he played chess with her late husband. He helps Martha enjoy life again. I so enjoyed watching her come back to life again.

The setting is also beautiful, and I could envision the French countryside and Martha’s farm.

All of these elements combine together for a great mystery that is not to be missed!

Flying by the Seat of My Knickers

by Eliza Watson

Synopsis

Why run from your troubles when you can fly instead?

When Caity Shaw is fired from her first job that doesn’t require an elf uniform, her older sister, Rachel, an event planner, hires her to work a meeting in Dublin. Caity jumps at the opportunity to travel abroad and escape her pathetic life. However, even four thousand miles from home, there’s no avoiding debt collectors, an overbearing mother, and haunting memories of a controlling ex.

While in Dublin, Caity suffers a series of humiliating mishaps, causing her to lose even more faith in herself. Caity struggles to earn Rachel’s respect—and to keep Declan, her hot Irish coworker, at arm’s length. Declan repeatedly saves Caity’s butt and helps boost her self-confidence, making it difficult to keep her distance from the charming womanizer. When Declan helps her research her Irish grandmother, Caity discovers the mysterious past of the courageous woman she barely knew might hold the answers to her future.

Christie’s Review

4 STARS

What a delightful, emotional, and charming read!!! I know you usually don’t use the words delightful, charming, and emotional together, but that is truly what this book is!!!!

Caity has had her life completely turned upside down, and her older sister, Rachel, an event planner, has hired her to assist in a meeting in Dublin…and Caity certainly needs this respite. Rachel has no clue what Caity has endured, and Caity is always comparing herself to Rachel. As she is learning the ropes, she experiences some bumps along the way, but she also discovers important things about herself.

Yes, there is a possibility of a romance, but her potential relationship with Declan, her co-worker, will be a slow developer. That is the way it should be. I’m so glad the writer didn’t rush this part of the story. Caity still has so much to find out about herself before embarking on a relationship.  Declan is a wonderful friend to her. He makes her laugh, and he helps her find her confidence again.

I’m so glad I got the opportunity to read this novel. It deals with some serious issues, but the writer deals with it in such a sensitive way….this is the emotional part. I loved the way it was written, it makes me want to travel, and the characters were very well fleshed out….this is the charming and delightful part. I’m so happy this is part of a series. I can’t wait to see where Caity is going to take me next!!!!

Amazing Grace

Amazing Grace

by Kim Nash

Synopsis

She’s taking her life back, one step at a time…

Grace thought she had it all. Living in the beautiful village of Little Ollington, along with head teacher husband Mark and gorgeous son, Archie, she devoted herself to being the perfect mum and the perfect wife, her little family giving her everything she ever wanted.

Until that fateful day when she walked in on Mark kissing his secretary – and her perfect life fell apart.

Now she’s a single mum to Archie, trying to find her way in life and keep things together for his sake. Saturday nights consist of a Chinese takeaway eaten in front of the TV clad in greying pyjamas, and she can’t remember the last time she had a kiss from anyone aside from her dog, Becks…

Grace’s life needs a shake up – fast. So when gorgeous gardener Vinnie turns up on her doorstep, his twinkling eyes suggesting that he might be interested in more than just her conifers, she might just have found the answer to her prayers. But as Grace falls deeper for Vinnie, ten-year-old Archie fears that his mum finding love means she’ll never reconcile with the dad he loves.

So when ex-husband Mark begs her for another chance, telling her he’s changed from the man that broke her heart, Grace finds herself with an impossible dilemma. Should she take back Mark and reunite the family that Archie loves? Or risk it all for a new chance of happiness?

A funny, feel good romance about finding your own path and changing your life for the better – readers of Cathy Bramley, Jill Mansell and Josie Silver will love this uplifting read.

Christie’s Review

4.5 STARS

Amazing Grace is a beautiful, uplifting book about hope and second chances!

Grace was living the dream, at least she thought she was. She had a wonderful home, a husband, and a son. Her life was turned upside down when she discovered her husband’s infidelity. Grace changed so much from who she was at the beginning of the book. Through much soul-searching, she forges a new path to discover the woman she was meant to be and possibly finding real love!

Vinnie and Grace are two individuals who deserve happiness. Yet, their journey wasn’t an easy one. People and secrets present quite the obstacles. However, it’s those obstacles that make their relationship even stronger.

While this is a love story between a man and a woman, it’s also a love story between a parent and a child, and the bond mothers share with their children ALWAYS…no matter whether they are still here on this earth or not. Readers will understand what I’m talking about when they see the relationship Grace had with her mother. It was just beautiful!

If you are looking for a truly remarkable book that will leave you with a warmness in your heart, you can’t go wrong with this one!!!!

Christie’s Review

 5 STARS

Oh my gosh, Forgiven, grabbed me by the heart and never let me go! It is a second chance romance with angst and emotion!!!

Lily and Bowen fell hard and fast for each other when they were in high school. They believed in forever until a horrible car accident took all that away. They haven’t really spoken to one another in ten years even though they live in the same town. Yet, they have never gotten over one another or been able to move on with their lives. However, the wedding between his brother and her best friend will force these two to finally face their past and the secrets that have kept them apart. The question is will they finally have the future that was taken from them?

The writer, Carrie Aarons, did such an amazing job of illustrating how much these two loved one another. From the moment Bowen smiled at her, no other guy existed to Lily.  He also knew the first time he kissed her, he wanted to be her “only one.” He had a bit of bad boy in him, and she was the good girl who feel hard for him. Yet, they were so much more than that cliche. They were two halves of one soul. That was evident through every word in their story.

Everything about this book, from beginning to the end, was incredible. Aarons built such a great cast of characters that really moved the story along. Everything connected seamlessly, even the title. I love when I title tells you everything you need to know, and that is exactly what occurred with this book…it was about forgiveness and second chances!

I discovered the talented Carrie Aarons a couple of years ago, and I fell in love with her writing then. No matter what she writes, I know I shouldn’t plan on doing anything else until I’m done reading the last page. She hasn’t disappointed me yet, and each book she writes, gets better. If you haven’t discovered this amazing writer, you really need to download one of her books today!!!!

The Inheritance

by Anne Allen

Synopsis

1862 Young widow Eugénie faces an uncertain future in Guernsey when her husband dies at sea. A further tragedy brings her to the attention of Monsieur Victor Hugo, exiled on the island and living in his voluptuous house only yards away from Eugénie. Their meeting changes her life and she begins working for him as a copyist, forming a strong friendship with both Hugo and his mistress, Juliette Drouet.

2012 Doctor Tess Le Prevost, born in Guernsey, now living in Exeter, is shocked to inherit her Great-Aunt’s house on the island. As a child she listened to Aunt Doris’s tales of their ancestor, Eugénie, whose house this once was, and who, according to family myth, was particularly close to Hugo. Was he the father of her child? Tess doubts it, but inheriting the house allows her to make a fresh start in her beloved island.

Will she discover the truth about Eugénie and Hugo? A surprise find may hold the answer as Tess embraces new challenges which test her strength – and her heart.

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

There is nothing I like better than a great historical fiction novel, and this one didn’t disappoint. And…the icing on the cake is that it’s based on a the talented Victor Hugo! I couldn’t get enough of this book!

The novel is told by two different narrators and in two time periods. Eugenie is from France, but she finds herself all alone in England after losing her husband in a tragic accident. If that wasn’t bad enough, she suffers another tragedy when she is assisted by Victor Hugo himself and his mistress, Juliette Drouet. Little did she know that this would change the course of her life and her descendants.

Tess is a doctor who was born in Guernsey but lives in Exeter after her parents moved her when she and her brother were just children. She is very successful, but she is questioning the direction of her life. When she learns she has inherited her great aunt’s home on Guernsey after her death, she returns and like Eugenie, her life will change course as well.

Both women are strong and didn’t really realize their strength until life forces them to. Both of them just enthralled me. I was just amazed by them. I loved getting to know them.

Of course, what made this book so special as well was the secondary characters, such as Victor Hugo, Juliette, Jack, and even to a certain extent, Doris. In addition, the storyline itself with the secrets and mystery  just kept my attention from beginning to end. Anne Allen combined all these elements seamlessly to give her readers one heck of a read!!!!

All-Time Favorite Read

A Top Read of 2019

Island in the Sun by Janice Horton is one of those rare gems of a book to just savor and enjoy! It’s one of those books that I read each and every word…devouring them! That’s why it is an all-time favorite read and a top read of 2019 for me!

Isla Ashton is a very successful jewellry designer in the UK. She is looking towards the future, having left her painful past on a beautiful island in the Caribbean. However, the past comes roaring back when she discovers she has inherited her aunt’s island, yes an entire island! She plans to sell and get out before confronting her past in the form of her past love, Leo. But, that is easier said than done when she finds her aunt has left her some surprises she never expected.

Both Isla and Leo are adults who have made decisions about their lives based on things that happened in their past. Neither of them are perfect by any means, especially their stubborness. That just made them more human and easier for me to connect with. As much as this book is about them and their journey to find one another again, it’s also a great deal about Kate. What a character this woman was….talk about a flawed character, she was definitely one. There were times I thought she was incredibly selfish. Yet, I somehow came to love her! She was so complicated and so human.

The book was incredibly well-written, and the writer, Janice Horton, is so talented in creating such a beautiful setting. I could see the blue seas, feel the sand between my toes, smell and feel the balmy salty breezes. It’s not very often I come across a writer that can create such a visual setting, one that I find myself completely immersed in.

Make sure to read the section about the writer herself. She is quite intriguing, and I loved how she finds the locales for her books!

This is a perfect book for the spring and summer. It has it all…great characters, a family saga full of secrets and discoveries, and a gorgeous setting. You can’t get much better than that! The epilogue also contains a surprise. So…I’m hoping there might be more to the story that will result in a future book!
