Victoria to Vikings

Victoria to Vikings: The Circle of Blood

by Trisha Hughes

About the Book

At the heart of our present are the stories of our past. In ages gone by, many monarchs died while they were still young. There were battles and diseases and many were simply overthrown. But the days of regal engagement in hand-to-hand combat are over and the line of succession has a good ageing prospect these days.

One of the most famous monarchs in history is Queen Victoria and her passing brought an end to an amazing era. She could be demanding, rude and she frequently fled public duties for the solitude of Scotland. But she loved fiercely and her people loved her fiercely in return. Under her reign, England achieved a greatness it had never known before.

Victoria to Vikings: The Circle of Blood spans from this great queen to another one: Queen Elizabeth II. Ours is the era of the longest living monarch in history and her ancestry is incredible. But walking two steps behind her, stalwart and loyal, stands Prince Philip, the strawberry to her champagne, and with him comes his own amazing Viking heritage.

What an amazing way to spend my time, reading this completely mesmerizing and enthralling book!!!! It is full of history yet told in the form of a story!

“At the heart of our present are the stories of our past. It’s the story of all people, in all places, at all times and because we know that history, we can decide what may happen in the future.”

This book chronicles the reign from Victoria to the beginning reign of Elizabeth II. Yes, there were men who ruled in the meantime, but the bulk of this book is about two incredible women, both in the very beginning of their adulthood. Yet, they became two formidable queens who would change England forever.

I have never read anything quite like this book! I’m a huge fan of history, especially British history. This reads much like a family saga, and it is to a certain extent. There were historical facts that I wasn’t aware of. I enjoyed discovering the path to becoming queen for both Victoria and Elizabeth…I believe that fate had a great deal to do with that.

As I wrote earlier, there are chapters about the men who ruled in between Victoria and Elizabeth, but a huge chunk of the book was given to Victoria. She was a very complex woman, spoiled, moody, but she kept her country’s interests first. The author showed her readers who these women were as individuals, not just simply queens. I came away from this book with massive respect for each of them.

I had not read her book prior to this one, Virgin to Victoria. However, I was only half way through this book, and I downloaded it. I cannot give this book enough praise or stars. Trisha Hughes truly outdid herself. I’m looking forward to reading more from her in the future.

Parallel (Parallel #1) by Elizabeth O’Roark Release Blast with Review

16 Jun

Time is a cruel thief…unless you can steal it back.
As a neurologist, Nick Reilly believes everything can be
explained by science.
But he can’t explain her—Quinn Stewart, an irresistible
patient who knows things about him she shouldn’t. And insists that at some
point, she was his wife.
Something else he can’t explain: he remembers her too.
Quinn wakes each morning remembering new details of the life
they shared—and she’s desperate for the dreams to stop. Because with each one,
she finds herself craving what she had with Nick more than the life—and the
fiancé—she already has.
Nick and Quinn share an attraction neither can deny, but one
that might destroy everything.
Just like it did before.

Top Read of 2019
All-Time Favorite Read

Parallel is described as “a second-chance romance unlike anything you have ever read.” That statement doesn’t even scratch the surface. This is my favorite book so far of 2019!!!!
From the very first page, my mind was completely engaged! Quinn has been having dreams about a man named Nick since she was a child. Her mother did everything she could to explain the strange occurrences away, so Quinn did what she could do forget about it and never mention it. Now, Quinn is engaged to Jeff, and she is only weeks away from saying, “I do.” Something about being at her wedding site brings on a sense of deja vu and a blackout, and it is only the beginning of a journey that will change the course of her life, especially when she realizes Nick isn’t an imaginary figure in her dreams, but he is very much a real person. This, my fellow readers, is where the plot thickens, and boy does it thicken!
Quinn isn’t the only one who has been having dreams. Nick is equally disturbed when he realizes Quinn is the woman in his dreams too. The two of them have such a deep connection, and it tugged at my heart, especially in the flashbacks of Quinn and Nick’s prior lives together.  I felt like both of them were just sort of drifting through their lives, and they only woke up when they found each other. Nick could never commit to anyone, and Quinn gave up her dreams. Now, the future seems to be open for them. However, there are twists and turns throughout the book that will make it hard, if not impossible to get their HEA.
Elizabeth O’Roark’s writing is mesmerizing. She has this uncanny and amazing talent of pulling you heart and soul into the story! I was so sad when the book ended just as I felt like the story of Nick and Quinn was just beginning. It was incredible, and it is unlike anything I have ever read. I cannot wait for the conclusion which releases at the end of the month!!!!

The stunning conclusion to Parallel.

Someone has torn them apart in the past, and she plans to do it again…

As Nick and Quinn piece together the truth about the life they once shared, they discover it was much deeper and darker than they ever imagined. In order to keep history from repeating, Quinn will need to master her unusual gifts—but that means admitting to herself and to Nick why she stopped using them in the first place.

He may never forgive her when he learns the truth, but Quinn is running out of options—because the clock is ticking, and it’s no longer just her life that hangs in the balance.

Injections of Insanity

Can Paolo win in his race against the pretender?

Injections of Insanity is the third book in this addictive series! I always think Lorraine Mace can’t get any better, but she continues to prove me wrong!!!!

In this book, DI Paolo has another hard case in front of him. What appears to be one murder continues to multiply. Most of these victims appear to be well-respected members of society. As we all know, everything isn’t always what it appears to be. I’m not going to reveal more about the plot because I hate spoilers. Just know…you are in for a great mystery with plenty of twists and turns. I really thought I knew who the murderer was this time, but again, I was proven wrong!!!!!

On another note, Mace gives us more insight into Paolo’s personal life, and life seems to be looking up for him in his romantic life and his relationship with his daughter. However, Mace throws a bit of a twist in that too! I’m anxious to see where this goes! Dave is working on his personal life as well. I just love the rapport between him and Paolo.

Our murderer is a bit different in this one as well. Readers will see this not too far along in the book. He wasn’t completely without feelings. It appears that circumstances in life help create the monster living inside of him.

I love that Mace gives us a glimpse inside of the murderer’s mind, but she does this in all of her books. This is what sets her apart in her genre. Sometimes it’s a scary place to be, but it gives her readers more insight into their motivations and who they are as characters in her books. Her plotlines, the perfectly paced action, her characters, and the way she writes keeps me coming back for more! I’m looking forward to her next book in the series!!!!

This is Crazy (This Is Series #1) by Natasha Madison Release Blast with Review

11 Jun

From the best selling series, Something So comes the spin-off This
is…

Zara Stone

All my life, I’ve said I will never date a hockey player. I know
better because I’ve seen and lived it all. My father is a hockey god, my
brother is the captain of the most successful NHL team in the world, and my
brother-in-law also plays in the league. Their lives are complicated, so I went
in the opposite direction.

I fell in love with a scholar. But instead of proposing marriage,
he broke up with me.

Three months later, I saw his engagement picture on Instagram. I
couldn’t let him get away with that. No, it didn’t matter what, I was going to
make that man see that I did not need him.
Evan Richards

I was in the running to pass my point record from last year, ready
to claim the number one spot in the league. On top of my game, I was riding my
career high wave.

Then, Hockey’s Princess, Zara Stone tweeted me. She wanted me to
crash her ex’s wedding.

The worst that could happen? A PR nightmare. The best? A fun night
with a beautiful woman.

It started out as a game—something I’m good at. Her crazy idea
twisted into something I wasn’t looking for, something neither of us wanted.
When push comes to shove, one thing runs through my mind:

This is Crazy. Also, this is crazy right.
Add a heading (1)

Can I just say how much I adore Natasha Madison??? She continues to blow me away with her storytelling talent!!!! This is Crazy was one of those rare books that kept me up way past my bedtime to finish!

I fell in love immediately with Zara and Evan. The book opens with Zara expecting an engagement, but what she got was dumped!!! Of course, no other woman was involved, right? That doesn’t ring quite true when she sees her ex’s engagement picture on Instagram. With a couple of drinks in her system, she decides to show him she is completely over him. So, she tweets his hero, hockey phenom, Evan Richards, and asks him to help her crash “said ex’s wedding.” He’s intrigued and accepts. What starts as something casual turns into something more…maybe even a little crazy!!!!

For a book to be really fabulous to me, it has to have a great storyline and great characters. Madison exceeded my expectations in both areas!!!! I felt like I knew both Zara and Evan! Zara is beautiful and sassy, yet she has a heart of gold. Evan is an alpha male, yet he respects Zara! He protects her, but he doesn’t try to control her. They were perfect for one another.

In addition, Madison also created a great cast of secondary characters!!! I loved both Zara and Evan’s families!!!! Can I just mention that two of my favorite characters were Evan’s labs, Lilo and Stitch. I have two labs myself, and Madison really captures their fun and loving nature.

The storyline was paced perfectly. Yes, these two fall pretty quickly for each other, but I felt like Madison realistically captured their connection, and the title accurately describes how the two feel about each other.

There are challenges to their relationship. Her brothers are on opposing hockey teams and are pretty protective of their sister. She lives in New York, and he lives in Dallas, TX. His sister is pretty protective of him as well! Yet, I loved watching this couple fall madly and crazy in love with one another.

The icing on the cake was that we didn’t just get one epilogue but two. Madison sets us up quite nicely for the next book in the series. I can’t wait to get Zoe’s story!!!! If you love a great hockey romance with some steam and sweetness, you can’t go wrong with this one!!!!

Drake
They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
What they don’t tell you is that it’s also drenched in regret.
The moment she walked away, a piece of my soul went with her.
My heart hasn’t beat the same since.
I know it won’t until I find her.
I brought her back from the dead once.
Now I need her to return the favor.
Analise
Being broken is never easy.
It’s even harder when it comes at the hands of the one you love.
The weight took my breath, the need to flee became instinctual.
How do you stay when paradise is lost?
How do you breathe when your heart stops beating?
Karma doesn’t come quietly.
Let’s hope absolution is a different story.
The confession is long overdue.

Top Read of 2019 and All-Time Favorite Read

“Sometimes you have to lose yourself to find your way back home.”

I only have one word to describe The Confession by Kate Benson…”INCREDIBLE.”  Benson’s talent truly shines in every page throughout the book!
The Confession picks up right where the previous book, The Sacrifice, ended. Drake and Analise are broken, and it will take everything they have within themselves to find their way back to one another. Along the way, we discover what is going on in the lives of those that love Ana and Drake. Because what has occurred between Ana and Drake affects Chase, Sophie, Jack, and Jenna.
I can always count on Benson to evoke emotions from me, but she truly outdid herself in this one. My heart was broken because her characters have become like family to me. I have been invested in them since I read The Promise years ago. The journey each of them has taken hasn’t always been an easy one, but I have certainly enjoyed taking the ride with them.
The book is told from several POVs with each character having their own story to tell. I find it amazing that each one involves a confession of sorts. While we get a look into each of their lives, it never takes away from the fact that this is Drake and Analise’s story. What they are enduring truly impacts the others and the decisions and views they have on life.
Benson’s writing is so unique in that she is a wonderful storyteller and gives you an incredible book, but her writing is like poetry in the way she writes. She utilizes all sorts of imagery that connects me with the storyline and the characters. The characters do endure obstacles and hurt at times, yet she somehow turns it into such a beautiful story. If you haven’t discovered the gem that is Kate Benson, you really need to read her novels. She never disappoints, and I can’t wait to see what is in store for the Ana, Drake, Sophie, Chase, Jack, Jenna, and even Matt because there were surprises along the way!!!!

Kate Benson was raised in Texas and currently resides in central Florida with her husband and their growing army of fur minions.

She learned to read at the age of four and has been hooked ever since. She credits her passion for literature to her mother, her love of story-telling to her father and her unwavering faith in happily-ever-after’s to her husband, Sean.
Some of her favorite things include rainy days, loud music, superhero movies, hot tea and of course, lazy afternoons with a great book.

Edie Brownes Cottage By The Sea

Edie Browne’s Cottage by the Sea

by Jane Linfoot

Synopsis:

Those who don’t jump will never fly…

Hurtling through the sky was supposed to be Edie Browne’s flight of independence. But when she falls head over champagne bucket while celebrating her successful landing, her life is changed in an instant.

But starting over has its benefits, and as Edie relearns the basics under the watchful eye of her Aunty Josie and an entire Cornish village of new friends and neighbours, she finds love and joy she never could have imagined in the unlikeliest of places…

Come home to St Aidan and Periwinkle Cottage for a romance full of love, laughter and friends for life!

Add a heading (5)

I knew I was going to enjoy this book and love the main character from the very first pages of the book. Edie had just gotten out of a relationship and was beginning a new job and a new flat. To cap this off, she decided to skydive. The skydive was her epic achievement. However, her life is changed in an instant, and she is on a journey that she never anticipated.

Edie returns to her Cornish village determined to get her life back. She thinks this will help her begin her life anew again. Little did she realize it, but it would be the start of a whole new life, one far better than she ever imagined.  She might finally find the happiness she has been looking for, and she might possibly find true love in the process!

I loved the characters as well as the writing. I could tell Edie was a fighter from the beginning. Come on…this is a woman who displayed her independence by jumping out of an airplane. I’m certainly not that brave. When she had her stroke, she worked hard and diligently to reclaim her life. If that isn’t some kind of heroine, I don’t know what is. If ever an individual deserved a HEA, it was her. So, seeing her fall in love and find someone worthy of her was just icing on the cake.

In addition, I loved the other characters as well. They have their own stories to tell, and the author accomplishes that through Edie’s voice. By the way, I thought that was brilliant.

It is very well-written book, and I love the author’s style of writing. It really pulled me into the story through her descriptions. I felt like I was everywhere Edie was, from the skydiving to the beautiful Cornish village!!!! I also liked the way she began each chapter with the date, and the number of days since her accident and her epic achievement which meant so much in her recovery. Jane Linfoot tied that up quite nicely in the very beginning of the book with her definitions of epic and achievements. That really is the crux of the book…epic achievements and their place in our lives.

If you like your romance with laughter and friendship mixed in, not to mention an absolutely beautiful setting, you don’t want to miss reading Edie Browne’s Cottage by the Sea!!! It’s a perfect summer read!!!!!

Jane Linfoot is a best selling author, who lives in a muddy cottage, up a steep hill in Derbyshire, with her family, their pets, and an astonishing number of spiders. Although she loves seeing cow noses over the garden wall, she’s happy she can walk to a supermarket.

Jane grew up in North Yorkshire where she spent a lot of her childhood avoiding horizontal gales blowing off the sea, and wrote her first book by accident, while working as an architect, and renovating country houses. While she loves to write feelgood books that let readers escape, she’s always surprised to hear her stories make people laugh, admits to (occasionally) crying as she writes, and credits her characters for creating their own storylines.

Jane’s garden would be less brambly if she wasn’t on Facebook and Twitter so often. On days when she wants to be really scared, she rides a tandem.

Her latest books include a series of stand-alone novels, based around a seaside wedding shop in Cornwall. Cupcakes and Confetti – The Little Wedding Shop by the Sea, Sequins and Snowflakes – Christmas at the Little Wedding Shop, and Bunting and Bouquets – Summer at the Little Wedding Shop, and most recently, The Little Cornish Kitchen. These are all published by Harper Impulse, an imprint of Harper Collins.

Rough And Deadly (A Much Winchmoor Mystery)  by Paula Williams Blog Tour with Review

Rough and Deadly

Rough And Deadly (A Much Winchmoor Mystery)

by Paula Williams

Synopsis:

Everyone knows Abe Compton’s Headbender cider is as rough as a cider can get. But is it deadly?

When self-styled ‘lady of the manor’, Margot Duckett-Trimble, announces she wouldn’t be seen dead drinking the stuff, who could have foreseen that, only a few days later, she’d be found, face down, in a vat of it?

Kat Latcham’s no stranger to murder. Indeed, the once ‘sleepy’ Somerset village of Much Winchmoor is fast gaining a reputation as the murder capital of the West Country and is ‘as sleepy as a kid on Christmas Eve’ when it’s discovered there’s a murderer running loose in the community again.

Kat has known Abe all her life, and she is sure that, although he had motive, he didn’t kill Margot. But as she investigates, the murderer strikes again. And the closer Kat gets to finding out who the real killer is, the closer to danger she becomes.

This second Much Winchmoor mystery is once again spiked with humour and sprinkled with romance – plus a cast of colourful characters, including a manic little dog called Prescott whose bite is definitely worse than his bark.

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

This second book in the Much Winchmoor series was just as enjoyable as the first book in the series. Murder has come to the village yet again. This time it is Margot Duckett-Timble is the victim. She is hoping to become the newest member of the parish council, and she thinks by doing her civic duty of reporting Abe Compton to the Environmental Health Officer about his alleged unsanitary practice of making cider will get her elected. She certainly didn’t think it would get her murdered, yet that is what happened. Of course, the main suspect is Abe, himself. Kat doesn’t believe Abe is capable of that. There is no shortage of suspects, especially when another occurs. Can Kat solve the murder before she becomes the next victim?

What I love about a series is returning to characters and places I love, and I love the quirky characters and the village of Much Winchmoor. I always like returning and learning something new about the characters. Williams gives her readers that!

As with the prior book in the series, the characters are quirky, and I loved returning to the village of Much Winchmoor. Both the characters and the setting added a deeper level to the book itself.

Williams makes her mysteries stand apart from others in the genre. I loved how she began this story…she opened it with the murder, and then she moves back in time. The action started off with a bang, therefore, keeping my attention throughout the entire book. It is very rare to have a mystery written with humor and romance, and Williams did a wonderful job of combining them all together. She made it appear seamless!!! I am becoming quite a fan of this series, and I can’t wait to read the next one in the series, especially after reading the last chapter. It looks like Kat has many more adventures in her near future!

Author Bio

Rough and Deadly Author

Paula Williams is living her dream. She’s written all her life – her earliest efforts involved blackmailing her unfortunate younger brothers into appearing in her plays and pageants. But it’s only in recent years that she discovered to her surprise that people with better judgement than her brothers actually liked what she wrote and were prepared to pay her for it.

Now, she writes every day in a lovely, book-lined study in her home in Somerset, where she lives with her husband and a handsome but not always obedient rescue Dalmatian called Duke. She started out writing fiction for women’s magazines (and still does) but has recently branched out into longer fiction. She also writes a monthly column, Ideas Store, for the writers’ magazines, Writers’ Forum.

But, as with the best of dreams, she worries that one day she’s going to wake up and find she still has to bully her brothers into reading ‘the play what she wrote’.
