Beard With Me (Winston Brothers #6) by Penny Reid Blog Tour with Review

BWM-Blog Tour Banner.jpg

“This is Penny Reid at her finest.” — L.B. Dunbar, author

Beard With Me, an epic and breathtaking story from New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Penny Reid, is available now!

KDP_BWM.jpg

No one is better at surviving than Scarlet St. Claire and making the best out of circumstances beyond her control is Scarlet’s specialty. In an apocalyptic situation, she’d be the last person on earth, hermitting like a pro, singing along to her CD Walkman, and dancing like no one is watching.

Scarlet is clever, Scarlet is careful, and Scarlet is smart . . . except when it comes to Billy Winston.

No one is better at fighting than Billy Winston and raging against his circumstances—because nothing is beyond his control—is Billy’s specialty. In an apocalyptic situation, he’d be the first person on earth to lead others to safety, overcome catastrophe, or die trying.

Billy is fearless, Billy is disciplined, and Billy is honorable . . . except when it comes to Scarlet St. Claire.

‘Beard With Me’ is the origin story of Billy Winston and Scarlet St. Claire (aka Claire McClure) and is just the beginning of their epic love story.

5 STARS

Penny Reid gives her readers a warning at the beginning that isn’t her typical Winston Brothers book, and there are all sorts of potential triggers for readers. She is not wrong, but I still LOVE her and her writing!

This is a prequel of sorts, but it’s also part of a duet with the sequel coming out pretty soon! I was excited to finally get the story of Billy and Scarlet/Claire. It is pretty fast-paced, but I could believe and feel the bond they shared.

Both have pretty terrible childhoods, and both impressed me in the ways they were able to cope with it. Both showed incredible resolve and strength. I loved seeing the Winston clan as children. Those were the places I laughed in the book. I know I’m being kind of cagey in writing the review, but I don’t want to even hint at a spoiler. Just know…this is one of my favorite books by Reid!

Despite this being different, and it doesn’t end like the other books in the series, I loved it! She was able to bring out all my emotions. There aren’t many writers that can make you laugh while also breaking your heart. Yet, Reid did just that. It shows her versatility and talent as a writer. It is always why she will be one of my very favorite writers of all time!

*Scarlet*

“Do you want me to leave?”

Yes. That would be best, a wise voice said between my ears.

So of course I inhaled deeply and said as calmly as I could manage, “I thought we were going to go get firewood.”

“Okay. Good.”

“But then,” I blurted, flustered and irritated with myself for not speaking wisdom, “You should go. You can’t tell me carting firewood back and forth between your house and here is how you want to spend the last of your Thanksgiving weekend.”

“I didn’t say it was.” He began making his way up the incline.

“But you just said—”

“How about we make a deal.” Billy dropped the kindling next to my little woodpile, dusting his hands off on his pants. “I’ll cart the firewood, and you sing.”

“You want me to serenade you while we carry firewood?”

He smiled, slow and easy as he walked to me and reached out his hand. On autopilot, I accepted it and allowed him to help me up.

As soon as I was standing, his gaze moved from my hairline down to my nose, lips, and then chin, saying quietly, “I’ll take a serenade from you anytime.”

Thunk ka-thunk. That was my heart. It had been doing the thunk ka-thunk quite a lot around him. I ignored it, because what else could I do?

“And you’re not carrying the wood.” He tugged on my hand, pulling me out of my daze and past my tent.

“I will too carry wood.” Struggling to find my bearings, I stumbled after him. “I can carry logs just fine.”

“You’ll carry a log.” Billy fit his fingers between mine, pressing our palms together and grinning at me like he was waiting for me to argue and he couldn’t wait.

Snapping my mouth shut, I glared at him.

“Nothing to say?”

Maintaining my glare, I walked next to him. I wasn’t being led anywhere I didn’t wish to go. Not anymore. He wasn’t talking me into anything else.

“That’s an awfully mean look, Scarlet.” His grin grew, his brutally attractive eyes glowing happily as he peered down at me.

“Well, you deserve it. Always trying to tell me what I can and can’t do. I’m not arguing with you about this. I’m carrying as much wood as I want and you can take your stupid, chauvinistic opinions and shove them up your pretty-boy ass.”

Goodness. Where had that come from?

Billy’s steps faltered and his mouth fell open, his eyebrows rising high on his forehead. He stared at me, looking shocked as hell. And then in the next moment, he threw his head back and laughed. But he did not let go of me, instead bringing my knuckles to his chest as his deep, rumbly laughter filled the empty spaces between the trees, surrounding us.

Crushing me.

Yes. I was well and truly crushed as I could only watch Billy Winston laugh, desperately basking in the image of him so delighted and relaxed. I had the odd sense that his laughter also filled the empty spaces inside of me, the neglected, vacant rooms, and even a few places that felt brand-new, like he’d created them.

All that noble honesty he carried around like a boulder abruptly lifted, revealing him. Just him. Carefree and young and happy. Someone he might’ve been if his burdens hadn’t been so heavy, his responsibilities so broad.

It lasted only a minute, maybe two, maybe less, but I had the sense of being caught afterward. Billy’s laughter had receded, but he’d spun a web while I’d been staring at him, holding his hand.

His grin became smaller and he bit his bottom lip, his gaze dropped to my mouth. “You think I’m pretty?”

“You know you’re pretty,” I said, bizarrely out of breath, rattled, needing to anchor my focus to a tree beyond him and waging war against the heat climbing up my neck to my cheeks. Oddly, my eyes stung. I blinked.

His attention was still on me. I felt it, but I didn’t dare look at him. I couldn’t handle one of Billy Winston’s intense stares right now. He’d probably use my scattered wits to his advantage, talk me into something I shouldn’t want to do, and then I’d be kicking myself later.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice deep with concern, all trace of his earlier humor gone.

I huffed, trying half-heartedly to steal my hand back from him. He didn’t let it go, instead taking my tugging as a signal to step closer, filling my vision.

“Scarlet—”

“Are you ever going to teach me how to play the guitar?” I closed my eyes.

He didn’t answer right away, and I felt him hesitate, his mind work before he muttered, “It’s only been a week.”

A quality to his voice made me think he wasn’t answering the question I’d asked, but rather he was reminding himself that it had only been a week since we’d struck the deal.

Was that only last week? Why does it feel like so much has changed?

Then he said, “Don’t be angry.”

“I’m not angry.” I was muddled, my head and heart hurt, I was incredibly confused, but I wasn’t angry.

The air shifted and I felt him move closer. A second later, the fingers of his free hand were at my ear, tucking my hair behind it, his fingertips lingering at my neck, sending wave after wave of goose bumps every which way. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t swallow. I couldn’t think. Every nerve in my body strained toward him and I didn’t understand it. What is happening?

“Have you ever been kissed, Scarlet?”

Four Christmases and a Secret

Four Christmases and a Secret

by Zara Stoneley

Except for Daisy Christmas means another of Uncle T’s dreaded Christmas parties, complete with Christmas jumper and flashing antlers.  And Oliver Cartwright.  Gorgeous Oliver Cartwright. Who she hates.

Every year Daisy has to face insufferable Ollie and hear all about how BRILLIANT he is.  Whereas Daisy has no job, no man and no idea how to fix things.

This Christmas however Daisy is determined things will be different.  There will be no snogging Ollie under the mistletoe like when they were teenagers.  No, this year she’ll show Ollie that she’s a Responsible Adult too.

But as the champagne corks pop, and the tinsel sparkles, Uncle T has news of his own to share…and it could change Daisy’s life forever…

Christie’s Review

5 STARS

Four Christmases and a Secret by Zara Stoneley is chick lit at its best!!!!

It is described as “Bridget Jones meets the Hallmark Channel,” and that is a perfect analogy! The books begins many years ago when Daisy is at the annual Christmas party hosted by Uncle T. She shares a kiss with the boy who is her nemesis, Ollie Cartwright. Years later, she finds herself sharing a living space with him. She discovers he might not be as bad as she always thought he was, and she may be in danger of losing her heart to him.

Daisy and Ollie’s mothers have been best friends since they were infants but with a touch of competition between them. Daisy has had to endure hearing how wonderful Ollie is every single year. She hasn’t seen him for years, and when she sees him, he makes her even madder. Not only is he successful but gorgeous too. I could empathize with Daisy. It seems Ollie has it all, and she has no job or boyfriend. She isn’t quite sure how to change things even though she is determined to change her life.

I loved Ollie too. I saw him in a different way than Daisy did in the beginning. He is gorgeous and smart, but he is also kind. He loves Daisy for who she is. He doesn’t want her to change who she is. I enjoyed watching these two finally realize they were truly soulmates.

Even though, a lot of the story centers around Christmas, it is a story of second chances, love and hope. Stoneley really makes her secondary characters bring this story to life, especially Uncle T. He really is the person who moves the book along.

If you like rom-coms and books that really tug at your heartstrings, you can’t go wrong with this one.

Intimate Strangers is a great start to what promises to be a great series!!!

It is a romance, but it is quite different from others in the genre. As the title suggests, the two main characters, Lisa and AJ, are intimate strangers. They share mutual friends, yet the two haven’t actually met. They have become close over the Internet. I felt the two had a pretty strong connection before they met in person. Lisa decides to take a huge risk and fly from Ireland to Alabama to finally meet AJ. He is more than she could have imagined, but she wasn’t expecting him to have a huge secret either. It makes her question her own instincts and if you can ever really know someone you have met online. But, she can’t deny that “intimacy” she feels for him.

The book is filled with angst and twists and turns. Yet, there really are no bad people in the book, just unfortunate circumstances. Despite living thousands of miles from one another, I couldn’t help pulling for them. They seem perfectly suited to one another. I was glad their story wasn’t over, and it looks like it is only the beginning. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

What a lovely, charming book for all dog lovers!

The title is exactly what the book is about…Henry’s Tale, and he does indeed have a story to tell us. He loves his human father, Alan, but his mother, Jenny, leaves a whole lot to be desired. She is not nice to Henry at all. She loves the superficial things in life…designer clothes, shoes, and pretty much anything she can buy with her credit card. Alan is a wonderful man, and one thing that makes him unique is he can understand Henry. Henry can understand him. It really is a love story between these two.

One of the other things I loved about this book was that it was told from Henry’s POV. What I learned about the other characters I discovered through Henry and even his pals, the other dogs in the book!

I had received an ARC of the book, and once I read the synopsis, I knew I had to download my own copy, especially when I learned that part of the proceeds go to the Border Terrier Welfare. If you love dogs, you will fall in love with this one. It is a beautiful story of the bond between dogs and humans.

I couldn’t put this enemies to lovers book down! Harley and Jackson walked right into my heart and haven’t let it go since!!!!

Hated You Then is a brilliant blend of enemies to lovers romance, along with the coming of age story of Harley and Jackson. To say these two hated each other is putting it mildly. They were constantly finding ways to torture each other as children and driving their mothers to their wits’ end. As time passes, those feelings somehow shift to something more. They aren’t quite sure how to deal with it, even though their parents seemed to know the affection they had for each other. I guess the saying is true, “There is a fine line between love and hate.”

Both Jackson and Harley are strong, independently-minded characters. That was evident from the very first pages of this book! I laughed so hard at the things they did to one another as children. Both were so precocious as well!

As the years passed, the two somehow always had each other’s backs despite their confusing feelings for one another. I really loved how Robinson wrote this book. It started with a bang in the present, but then, she went back into the past to the beginnings of the relationship between the two. She didn’t rush it. She took her time, allowing her readers to fall in love with the story and the characters. This does end in a cliffhanger, but that’s okay because this story didn’t need to be rushed. It has all the feels…laughter, swoons, and sadness. I’m looking forward to reading the sequel.

Two Tides To Turn

By RR Gall

Synopsis

A family ripped asunder.
A terrible secret lurks in a thrilling novel of love, grief, and mystery.

Patrick thought his grandfather, John, died before he was born.
In later life, he finds out that it wasn’t true. For the first five years of Patrick’s life, they stayed in the same small village.
So why were they kept apart?

Patrick wishes to search the past to find the reason – but only if he can be united with his young daughter first.
And that means bringing her home to Scotland.
It means journeying to France to take her away from the care of her mother, Patrick’s ex-wife.

In 1915, with the war raging in Europe, John is a young man working on the family farm. Not yet old enough to enlist but aware of its looming threat, he meets Catherine. But his attempts at courtship end suddenly when an accident rips his life apart.

Told in alternate chapters, set, mainly, in South-West Scotland, this is the dramatic story of Patrick, interwoven with John’s traumatic life.

Christie’s Review

4.5 STARS

Well, this is one of those books I have to wait before I write a review. It is a book I had to really process before being able to write about it. It is a haunting story of love, grief, betrayals of the worst kind, and a mystery.

It’s a book about Patrick and his grandfather, John, told in parallel timelines.  Patrick grew up thinking his grandfather had died before he was born. Imagine his surprise when he realizes that he and his grandfather lived in the same village for years, but he was always kept away from him. After his own father’s death, he wants to know why. Thus, begins one mystery, but Patrick also wants to see his little girl again. That in of itself is another intriguing part of the storyline.

I can’t go into much more detail as it will spoil the book, and I definitely don’t want to do that. The synopsis doesn’t even scratch the surface of the intensity of this book. There really are no words to accurately tell you that. All the characters are very well fleshed out. I couldn’t put the book down until I was finished. The characters are still with me and probably will be for a while!

The Beltane Choice (The Celtic Fervour #1)

by Nancy Jardine

Synopsis

AD 71 Northern Roman Britain
Lorcan of the Brigantes knows that unity of the northern tribes is essential when the Ancient Roman legions advance northwards to Brigantia. Yet, everything comes at a price. Using his captive, Nara, as a political bargain with the Selgovae comes with impossible stipulations. Battle at Whorl – Iron Age tribes against the Romans – is inevitable.

Will Nara have her Beltane choice?

The adventures of the Garrigill Clan begin…

Christie’s Review

4 STARS

The Beltane Choice is not only a sweeping story of love between two sworn enemies but also a history lesson as well.

Nara is trying to escape a wild boar when she encounters Lorcan of Brigantes. He comes to her aid, but then she soon finds herself his prisoner. Lorcan is immediately under her spell; however, he also sees that she will be a great political asset for him as well. As she spends more time with him, he soon discovers that she means much more to him. His biggest war may not be on the battlefield but in his own heart.

Nara is a woman before her time. She is strong and independent. Even if her own father doesn’t love her, she soon finds a home with Lorcan’s tribe. She is also facing an internal battle. She isn’t sure who to trust, her own family or the new family she has come to love.

I’m a huge fan of history and romance, so this book was right up my alley. However, the author made this book stand out in the historical romance/fiction genre. It’s magical yet very realistic. I don’t know much about this period in history, and I felt like I learned a great deal. One of my favorite parts of the book was the author’s notes in the back. She gives her readers a great background of that period. This is a must read for historical fiction/romance fans.
