New Review: Hard Luck (Trophy Boyfriends #4) by Sara Ney

About the Book:

SOME GIRLS HAVE ALL THE LUCK
Unfortunately, I am not one of those girls. Not when I lost my apartment because my roommate let the lease lapse while I was traveling for work. Not when my brothers keep finding love and my mother keeps reminding me I’m still single. Not after a one-night stand during my older brother’s wedding has me waking up pregnant.

I have to keep it a secret—from him, and my family. I sure can’t tell my brother his teammate, Mateo Jose Espinoza, is the man I slept with. Confident, funny, Mateo…

A GUY CAN’T CATCH A BREAK
Just when I thought I’d found the girl of my dreams, she ghosts me. Worse? Her brother refuses to give me her number, and my calls to her office go straight to voicemail. I thought I was a catch; professional athlete, charming, raised with six sisters—I’m a guy who knows his way to a woman’s heart! What reason could she possibly have for avoiding me?

When I finally catch up to True Wallace, I’m going to get the answer.

My Review

~4.5 STARS~

Hard Luck is exactly why I’m in love with Sara Ney and all of her quirky characters! As always, I flew through the pages until sadly I had reached the end and I had to tell this crazy bunch good-bye again.

I knew this was going to be a good book before I even began because of the little hint Ney gave me at the end of the previous book! True is every bit as hilarious as her two brothers, but she knows they won’t be laughing when they discover she is pregnant by none other than Matteo, her brother’s teammate.

Ney always takes a trope and turns it on its head. As the book opens, True is already pregnant, and she is trying to figure out what she is going to do next. First, she has to find a permanent place to live and then, how to tell Matteo and her family.

Meanwhile, Matteo is trying to figure out why True ghosted him after they shared an amazing night together, but her brother has no intention of Matteo getting anywhere near his sister. Oh boy, if he only knew!!!

I love that as usual the story is told from both characters’ POVs. It really gives you an idea of what both of them are thinking and feeling. Matteo is a sweetheart. He really wants to explore a relationship with True, if she will only give him a chance.

Most of the book is about the two of them finding their way back to each other, and Ney includes flashbacks of that magical night together.

I’m so glad Matteo’s family is just as crazy as True’s. It was a sweet, romantic, steamy read told in a way only Sara Ney could tell us.

Surprise Sneak Peek: The Crown of Gilded Bones (Blood & Ash #3) by Jennifer Armentrout

Bow Before Your Queen Or Bleed Before Her

The Crown of Gilded Bones, the third installment in the intense and gripping fantasy, A Blood and Ash Series by New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout, is coming April 20th and we have an exciting sneak peek!

CHAPTER ONE

“Lower your swords,” Queen Eloana commanded, her hair shining a glossy onyx in the sun as she sank onto one knee. The raw emotion pouring out of her seeped into the Temple floors of the Chambers of Nyktos, bitter and hot, tasting of anguish and a helpless sort of anger. It stretched out toward me, needling my skin and brushing against this…primal thing inside me. “And bow before the…before the last descendant of the most ancient ones. She who carries the blood of the King of Gods within her. Bow before your new Queen.”

The blood of the King of Gods? Your new Queen? None of that made sense. Not her words or when she had removed her crown.

A too-thin breath scorched my throat as I looked at the man standing beside the Queen of Atlantia. The crown was still upon the King’s golden-haired head, but the bones had remained a bleached white. Nothing like the gleaming, gilded one the Queen had placed at the feet of the statue of Nyktos. My gaze skipped over the terrible, broken things scattered about the once pristine, white floors. I’d done that to them, adding their blood to what had fallen from the sky, filling the thin fissures in the marble. I didn’t look at that or anyone else—every part of my being focused on him

He remained on one knee, staring up at me from between the vee of the swords he’d crossed over his chest. His damp hair, blue-black in the Atlantian sunlight, curled against the sandy-hued skin of his forehead. Red streaked those high, angular cheekbones, the proud curve of his jaw, and ran down lips that had once shattered my heart. Lips that had pieced those broken shards back together with the truth. Bright, golden eyes locked with mine, and even bowed before me, so motionless I wasn’t sure he breathed, he still reminded me of one of the wild and strikingly beautiful cave cats I’d once seen caged in Queen Ileana’s palace as a child.

He had been many things to me. A stranger in a dimly lit room who’d been my first kiss. A guard who had sworn to lay down his life for mine. A friend who had looked beyond the veil of the Maiden to truly see me underneath, who’d handed me a sword to protect myself instead of forcing me into a gilded cage. A legend cloaked in darkness and nightmares that had plotted to betray me. A Prince of a kingdom believed to have been lost to time and war, who had suffered unimaginable horrors and yet managed to find the pieces of who he used to be. A brother who would do anything, commit any deed to save his family. His people. A man who bared his soul and stripped open his heart to me—and only me.

My first.

My guard.

My friend.

My betrayer.

My partner.

My husband.

My heartmate.

My everything

Synopsis

Bow Before Your Queen Or Bleed Before Her

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout comes book three in her Blood and Ash series.

She’s been the victim and the survivor…

Poppy never dreamed she would find the love she’s found with Prince Casteel. She wants to revel in her happiness but first they must free his brother and find hers. It’s a dangerous mission and one with far-reaching consequences neither dreamed of. Because Poppy is the Chosen, the Blessed. The true ruler of Atlantia. She carries the blood of the King of Gods within her. By right the crown and the kingdom are hers.

The enemy and the warrior…

Poppy has only ever wanted to control her own life, not the lives of others, but now she must choose to either forsake her birthright or seize the gilded crown and become the Queen of Flesh and Fire. But as the kingdoms’ dark sins and blood-drenched secrets finally unravel, a long-forgotten power rises to pose a genuine threat. And they will stop at nothing to ensure that the crown never sits upon Poppy’s head.

A lover and heartmate…

But the greatest threat to them and to Atlantia is what awaits in the far west, where the Queen of Blood and Ash has her own plans, ones she has waited hundreds of years to carry out. Poppy and Casteel must consider the impossible—travel to the Lands of the Gods and wake the King himself. And as shocking secrets and the harshest betrayals come to light, and enemies emerge to threaten everything Poppy and Casteel have fought for, they will discover just how far they are willing to go for their people—and each other.

And now she will become Queen…

Wreck My Plans (North Haven University #3) by Kelsey Clayton Blog Tour with Review & Excerpt

My name is Carter Trayland,

And I really screwed up.

Wreck My Plans, an all-new standalone enemies-to-lovers romance from Kelsey Clayton is available now!

I should’ve ended things before they began.

Instead, I wound up in a twisted love triangle,

One that I never wanted to be a part of.

The wrong choice sent my life on a whirlwind.

A woman I forced myself to love is dead.

My best friend was nearly blamed for her murder.

And the one I’ve always wanted, now wants revenge.

Her favorite person is gone, and she thinks it’s my fault.

I’m not about to correct her either.

Not when the reality is so much worse.

She can’t find out the truth of what happened.

Knowing would ruin her in ways I can’t fathom.

If blaming me is her way of coping, I’ll gladly carry that burden.

Because Tyeler Morgan is the one girl I’d protect at all costs.

Wreck My Plans is a standalone and part of the North Haven University series. It deals with sensitive topics that my be triggering to some readers.

5 STARS

Wow! This series just keeps getting better! Wreck My Plans is a beautiful, emotional tale of forgiveness and redemption.

Carter has tried to put his painful past behind him and live with a life choice that completely changed him in ways he never imagined. Tye began her life as no child should have to. Her bright spot was her best friend, Davi. She rescued her and gave her a life she could never imagine. Now, she has to endure life without her by her side…taken from her, and she blames Carter. She means to make him pay! As the title suggests, she wants to wreck his plans for a good life, but it may be Carter who wrecks hers.

I have come to love each character Clayton creates. She introduces them to us throughout each book, but I have no idea of their real story until they get to speak in their own books. She makes each one unique in their own right, and it is the same for Carter and Tye.

Carter always wanted Tye, but he ended up with her best friend instead. He was faithful to Davi; however, he couldn’t forget Tye. As he tried to break things off, tragedy struck, and Davi was gone. He tried to make things right, but in her grief, Tye’s budding feelings for him turned to hate. The girl is a firecracker, and some of the pranks she pulls on him are pretty funny! I have to admire Carter’s determination to tear down her walls despite all the roadblocks she puts up.

Clayton really made me feel the depth of Tye’s grief and hurt. Davi was everything to her. She isn’t sure how to keep living life without her by her side….Davi literally saved her when they were children. Clayton also illustrated through Tye that grief can blind us to the truths we don’t want to see in those we love. Imagine Tye’s surprise when she realizes the spark she felt with Carter hasn’t gone away, and he is the one person who makes her feel safe and loved. As you might guess, this causes a lot of angst and drama for both of them.

Clayton can always take darkness and turn it to light. The journey isn’t always easy for the characters, but man oh man, the ending is so worth it. I admired how she made Davi somewhat of a central character even though she wasn’t there. I learned as Tye did that Davi wasn’t the perfect savior she always thought she was, and Carter tried to keep that from her.

As always, I hate to tell the characters good-bye, but let me tell you her next book promises to be just as good. It’s Easton’s turn to tell his story, and it is going to be a doozy!!!!

Excerpt

“What the fuck is she doing here?”

I turn toward the door to see Carter, Jace, and Jace’s girlfriend standing there. The guys look just as shocked to see me as I am to see them, but the girl next to Jace is most likely picturing ways to murder me in her mind.

“You two know each other?” Amelia asks.

She grunts. “Not exactly, but I know enough of her to know she’s a fucking bitch.”

“Woah,” Kennedy steps in. “Easy, Paige.”

“Yeah, babe. Let’s calm down a little,” Jace tries, but she’s not having it.

She rips her arm out of his hold. “No! Fuck no! She tried to put you away for life, Jace. For life!”

The reminder of my best friend’s murder trial is a slap in the face, and my testimony was based off my belief that he actually did it. If I had seen the tape showing the other angle before I got on the stand, I never would have agreed to testify. The one thing I can see, though, is that Jace seems to value his life a little more than he used to, because he doesn’t try to calm his girlfriend down again.

Paige glares at me as she steps forward and into my face. “I don’t know what the fuck you’re doing here, but let me make one thing clear: if you try fucking with my friends, my family, we’re going to have serious issues.”

There is absolutely nothing that I find intimidating about this girl. To be honest, it looks like I could have the right guy punt her across a football field. But I can respect her loyalty to her friends and the courage to jump into the lion’s den to defend them.

I used to have that.

She turns around and walks back toward Jace. “Come on. We’re leaving.”

“No. Allow me.” I interrupt and my eyes find Carter’s. “Suddenly, this is the last place I want to be.”

Neither Kennedy or Amelia try to stop me as I slip out the door—not that I expected them to. They’ve been friends with them longer. Of course, Carter manages to take everything from me. He took Davi. Now he already has Kennedy and Amelia. There’s no way those two will have anything to do with me once I start doing things to get back at Carter, and nothing will stand in the way of my plans.

Nothing.

As if he has an actual death wish, the door opens and Carter comes running out, calling my name. I consider not stopping. I’m sure nothing good can come from talking to him, but my anger is enough to get me to freeze.

“Don’t leave,” he tells me. “I’m sorry for what Paige said.”

I balk. “For what Paige said? That’s what you’re sorry for?”

Running his fingers through his hair, he sighs. “Not the only thing, but it’s something I’m sorry for. Can we just go somewhere and talk?”

A bark of humorless laughter echoes out of me. “No. I don’t want to go anywhere with you. I don’t even want to fucking look at you.” My fists clench, and I can feel my nails digging into my skin as he stays quiet. “You just have the perfect life, don’t you? You’ve got your team and your friends and your family. And where’s mine? Oh. That’s right. Six feet under, right where you fucking left her.”

All-Time Favorite Read

A Top Read of 2021

I love to find new writers that I am crazy about, and I found that in Holly Renee!!!! I was completely addicted to The Touch of a Villain from the opening scene!!!

This book was all the things I love about reading…flawed characters that I ended up loving, a great storyline, a hint of mystery, a steamy romance, and a stunning setting!

Josie has moved to Clermont Bay not by choice but because she was forced to. She has not only just lost her beloved mother, but now she is living with the father that was always absent and cold. She is trying to make it through her senior year and leave Clermont Bay behind her. She certainly didn’t see Beck coming and the chaos he would bring into her life.

Beck’s family comes from old money, hence his last name is Clermont. However, Beck isn’t your normal bully and regular jerk which makes this book different from others in the genre. His mood only turns dark when he finds out that Josie is the stepsister to his once best friend and now enemy Lucas. He has been waiting to make Lucas pay for his crimes, and sweet Josie fits the bill quite nicely.

Josie is innocent in some ways, but in other ways she isn’t. She certainly doesn’t back down from Beck which makes him hate her and yet makes him want her more. She tries her best to stay off of his radar and keep her distance. Her hatred for him burns just as hotly as his does for her, but he also makes her feel things she hasn’t ever felt, thus drawing her even more into his orbit. There isn’t anything about Josie that is malicious. Around others, Beck is sweet and caring, and I saw some glimpses of that with Josie, but his blind hatred for Lucas always resurfaces. I definitely understood why, but I wanted to just shake him. She had nothing to do with her brother’s crimes.

The storyline and pacing was spot on. I literally forgot everything while I was reading this, even housework!!! When I finally looked up at the clock, hours had passed. It has been a while since I have done that with a book. The storyline was a bit reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet because of the two families hating one another.

The chemistry between the two crackled! From their very first meeting, I could feel the sexual tension. Oh my gosh, I love when a writer can give me butterflies!!! Beck is the bad boy I couldn’t resist, but I, like Josie, wanted to slap him many times.

There was a hint of mystery as well because of the dark secrets everyone seems to be hiding. It seems like most people know what those secrets are except Josie, and yet she seems to be always paying the price for them, both from Beck and her own family. Oh my, what an ending! Renee really rocked me with that one. I’m not sure that Beck can redeem himself again in Josie’s eyes, but I’m certainly hoping he can.

I have to warn you, though, if you start reading this one, you won’t be doing anything else. Make sure your schedule is free for the several hours it takes you to finish. The icing on the cake is the beautiful setting of the beach. I could literally smell the salt water in the air.  I am waiting on pins and needles for the next book!!!!

New Review: Broken by Evelyn Sola

Broken

by Evelyn Sola

About the Book:

He swept into my life, like an unexpected storm. One minute I’m planning forever and the next, I’m left picking up the pieces. Three years have passed and now he’s back wanting to reclaim what once was. Can lightning strike twice or will they be left broken? Readers who love second chance romances will enjoy this diverse, contemporary romance.

JULIA

I never saw Noah Weston coming. He swept into my life like an unexpected storm, but soon, he was everything to me.
Until tragedy struck.
One day I was planning the rest of my life with my soulmate, and the next I was picking up the pieces of a love so strong, it broke me apart.
It took three years to put myself back together.
Three years until I was ready to move on.
I’ll never forget it. The day he came back.
Can lightening strike twice? Maybe, but when I look into his eyes, all I remember are the last words he ever spoke to me.
The words that left me broken.

NOAH

I loved her before I knew her name. She was more than just my heartbeat. Julia Blake was a dream too good to be true.
When real life invaded the bubble we had created, I was left a broken man.
I survived, but I was dead inside. Half the man I used to be.
The half I needed had a new life without me.
Three years later, I’m back to reclaim what I’ve lost.
I’m back for her, only she wants nothing to do with me.

Broken by Evelyn Sola was a beautiful, emotional romance!

Sparks flew when Julia and Noah met in college. Noah was definitely not the typical guy that she usually was interested in. But, there was just something about him….Noah was mesmerized by Julia from the moment he laid eyes on her. However, a tragic event tore them apart, and Sola gives us a beautifully, broken second chance romance.

I adored both characters! Both were quite stubborn. Julia was determined to never let Noah anywhere near her again, and Noah was determined that he was going to be the man he always wanted to be for her. Each of them were determined to rebuild their lives as well too, and they both had to claw themselves out of the darkness in which they found themselves.

Thankfully, Sola didn’t rush their reconciliation. Honestly, she couldn’t because too much had happened between not only Julia and Noah but also between Julia and his family.

What made the book so special as well wasn’t just about second chances between them but also between Julia and Noah’s parents. Her parents also had to learn to trust him again as well.

I liked how Sola also gave us the background of this couple. They weren’t this insta-couple. They began as friends, even though each one secretly wanted to be more. I think that made their relationship even more special.

Sola is a new writer to me, and I enjoyed her work. She gave me not only a romance but also a book that is very relevant to the time we are living in now. It’s told with love and even gives people who made very hurtful mistakes in the past a chance at redemption.

I sit up and look at the figure, but the bright sun blocks his face. I block the sun by putting a hand on my forehead and look into a pair of familiar eyes, the clearest green I’ve ever seen. The sun dips behind a cloud, giving me a clear view of his face.
It’s the ginger hottie with the bun. He’s either a transfer or a graduate student because, in all my years here, I’ve never seen him until recently. But whatever the circumstances, he’s certainly noticeable. And I never turn down an opportunity to ogle good eye candy.
First, he’s head and shoulders taller than everyone on campus. He walks around, his shoulders broad, as if he owns the place. Unlike most of the people at this school, I’ve never seen him with an entourage. The few times I’ve seen him, he’s been alone.
His bun is messier than usual today. Half of it has fallen out of the elastic and hangs on his very broad shoulders. The wind blows, making his hair messier, and my fingers itch to put it back in place.
I’ve never been this close to him, and when I look into his face again, I notice a small scar above his left eyebrow. I envision running a finger over that scar fifty different ways.
“Well, if you ever had this brownie, you’d die a happy death too,” I finally say.
Normally, I’d be tongue-tied around someone as good looking as him, but knowing that he must be making small talk between classes and that someone like him would never be interested in me, I decide to just be myself.
“Are you going to share, then? I want to judge this brownie for myself.” His eyes twinkle when he smiles, and the smile reveals a dimple in each cheek. When he sticks his hand out, I stare at it, dumbfounded. “Noah Weston,” he says, and I finally shake his hand.
I’m a tall woman, only an inch shy of six feet. My hands have always been considered large, but now it’s totally engulfed in his. He wraps his hand around mine, holding it firmly, showing the contrast between my brown hand and his much lighter one. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say he doesn’t want to let go, but he does after I give it a little tug.
“Julia Blake.” I rub my hand on my jeans, trying to erase the electrical charge from his brief touch.

ABOUT THE BOOK

“Are you stalking me?”

“We live right next door to each other, New Girl.”

Bay Bishop aka The New Girl is my new neighbor. Glasses, stage crew black clothes and a knack for fading into the background.

She’s probably the only one who rolls her eyes when I walk past instead of cheering on my last touchdown play. But before I can shove her into the recesses of my mind filed under “Not my problem” she lands herself smack dab in the middle of my dreams.

I catch her singing with a voice unlike any I’ve heard before that taps into feelings I shouldn’t have for the girl who avoids me at all costs. I need to know why she hates me.

With three months until graduation, the final play is on. Only it’s not for more points. It’s for Bay.

Unlike my success on the field, this win is anything but assured. But I can’t stop myself from taking the risk.

There’s no flashing scoreboard.

There’s no cheering crowd.

There’s only her and me.

The countdown clock is ticking. The only thing scarier about finding my first love will be losing her.

The Art of Falling for You is the first book in the new Fulton U universe sports romance, Falling trilogy.

5 STARS

The Art of Falling for You is the reason why Maya Hughes is one of my favorite writers! It’s a beautiful, emotional love story!

Bay has been The New Girl in her high school for three years. She tries her best to blend into the background until she can leave her small town behind her. Dare does anything but blend in. He is a star football player that commands attention whenever he enters a room. Neither one of them stray from their social groups until their paths intertwine, and in an instant everything will change for them.

Dare and Bay have shared some classes but never more than a few words. In fact, Bay treats him nothing like others do. She doesn’t do anything to attract his attention which Dare can’t understand. However, when he hears her singing in her backyard, she becomes something he can’t forget.

Before I go in depth about my feelings for these two characters, I have to say that the way this book is written is genius. It starts in the present, but then Hughes takes us back to the past to that day Dare heard Bay singing. We end back in the present with one heck of a cliffhanger! Thank you so much, Maya Hughes, for not shortening their story. Giving their early romance its own book was wonderful. I felt so connected to both of them!

So…my feelings for Dare and Bay…I loved  them. Both of them had their own opinions of each other. Bay didn’t disguise her hatred toward Dare which he can’t understand. Most people, especially girls, love him. Bay has a good reason to not like Dare very much. As Dare seeks her out more, she begins to trust him, and a friendship begins that turns quickly to love. However, Dare and Bay have certain issues that begin to impact their relationship. I knew my heart would be put through the wringer, and I was right.

Book 2 cannot arrive quickly enough….that cliffhanger was brilliant. Great move, Maya Hughes!!!!

Maya Hughes, that’s me!, can often be found sneaking in another chapter while hiding in the bathroom from her kids! 🙂 I’m a romance writer who loves taking inspiration from everyday life, namely my husband and biggest fan. Inspiration also strikes when I hear a song, meet someone new or daydream while at soccer practice.

I love writing stories that capture the possibilities of the paths less travelled and enjoy experiencing life through my characters’ eyes.

I’m the mom of three little ones, the wife to an amazing husband and also work full time. Some of my favorite things are cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, white wine, laughing until I can’t breathe, traveling with my family and Jeff Goldblum.
