Poppy’s Place in the Sun

by Lorraine Wilson

Poppy's Place In The Sun

‘She had me at Bonjour! Warm, funny, deliciously French…this lovely story filled my heart with sunshine’ Jane Linfoot

Synopsis

Sometimes you need to lose yourself to find your way home…

With only her trusty dogs Peanut, Treacle and Pickwick by her side, Poppy Kirkbride could be forgiven for having doubts about her move to a quiet village in rural France. But as the sun shines down on her ramshackle new home, Poppy knows she’s made the right decision. A lick of paint, and some TLC and her rustic farmhouse will be the perfect holiday retreat – Poppy’s dream come true.

Poppy is welcomed by her fellow villagers, except for brooding local vet Leo Dubois, who makes it clear Poppy isn’t welcome in his village – or his life! Leo might be gorgeous, but Poppy won’t be told what to do by an arrogant Frenchman – no matter how kind and gentle he is to her dogs!

Determined to stay, Poppy tries to understand the enigmatic Frenchman better. But as the two get closer, Poppy sees another side to Leo – a man with heartbreak of his own. Falling in love with Leo is easy, but can he ever return Poppy’s love? And what would this mean for her dream life and place in the sun?

4.5 STARS

What an enjoyable escape Poppy’s Place in the Sun was for me! I knew when I read the synopsis, I was going to love the book!

Poppy has decided to move from England to a quiet, rural village in the south of France. She has bought her new home and is quite looking forward to her boyfriend, Pete, joining her. Imagine her shock and surprise when he breaks it off with her…and not even in person. I was pretty shocked myself! I couldn’t help wanting to flog him myself on her behalf. However, she refuses to give up her dream of moving, so she forges ahead!

Many people consider Poppy a daydreamer, and she is. But, she is also determined and strong, doing what it takes to reach those dreams. She has bought a home that has no working kitchen, and the plumbing and electricity needs updating. Poppy certainly won’t let that stop her! The girl has some determination!!!!

Poppy is welcomed by the people in the village, and she seems to be thriving. Only one person isn’t so happy she has come to town, local vet, Leo. He loves her three dogs, but he appears to not be overly fond of her. The more time he spends with her, he begins to show her a whole other side to him. But, then who couldn’t resist Poppy’s sunny demeanor and charm? He has his reasons for not trusting her, and I kept hoping he would let his defenses down, giving her a chance and himself a chance for a HEA.

I really loved everything about the book…the storyline, the characters, the romance, and of course, the beautiful south of France. I want to go there now! It was the theme of the book that resonated with me the most. It’s about casting your fears aside and daring to grasp your dreams and make them a reality. This was perfectly illustrated through Leo and Poppy. When you add in how well-written the book was with inspiring quotes with each chapter and some precious pups, and you have yourself one gem of a book!!!!

The Letter - Kitty's Story

The Letter – Kitty’s Story

By Eliza J. Scott

Synopsis:

Thirty-four-year-old Kitty Bennett is trapped in a loveless marriage to criminal barrister, Dan, who’s gradually isolated her from her family and friends. Until the day she (literally) bumps into her first love, the handsome and easy-going Ollie Cartwright – someone she’s done her best to avoid for as long as she can remember. Looking into Ollie’s eyes awakens feelings for him she thought she’d buried deep years ago, and he clearly feels the spark, too. As she walks away, Kitty can’t help but wonder what might have been…
Dan senses that his marriage is on shaky ground and knows he needs to win his wife round. He turns on the charm, skilfully using their two children, Lucas and Lily, as bargaining tools. But Kitty’s older brother, Jimby, and her childhood best-friends, Molly and Violet, have decided enough is enough. For years they’ve had to watch from afar as Kitty’s been browbeaten into an unrecognisable version of herself. They vow to make her see Dan for what he really is, but their attempts are no match for his finely-honed courtroom skills and, against her better judgement, Kitty agrees to give her husband one last chance. But, all-too-soon, a series of heart-breaking events and a shocking secret throw her life into turmoil…
Will she stand by Dan, or will Kitty be brave enough to take the leap and follow her heart to Ollie?

Life is anything but peaceful in the chocolate-box pretty village of Lytell Stangdale, where life unravels, and hearts are broken. Full of heart-warming moments, this book with have you crying
tears of joy, laughter and sadness.

Christie’s Review

4.5 STARS

Wow! Where do I begin with this review? There is so much emotion, twists and turns to Kitty’s journey to happiness!!! I’m so glad I got to join her! Plus, she had a Black Labrador in the book. Being a fellow Lab lover with two yellows of my own, I knew I would love this book!!!!

Kitty is such a gentle soul and loyal to a fault, often to the detriment of her own well-being! She has a lovely home, a successful husband, and two beautiful children. When you look behind the closed doors of her home, you will see the secrets she is keeping! She does have a wonderful home and great children, but her husband, Dan, is absolute rubbish…a manipulative brute. She has put up with his awful behavior for far too long, and she has had just about enough!!!!

The title Eliza J. Scott chose was absolutely perfect!!! This is definitely Kitty’s story. Scott goes back and forth in time to give us the story of Kitty and her marriage to Dan. Through those trips back in time, readers get to see just how manipulative Dan really is, always putting his selfish needs before everyone else’s.

I can’t explain how wonderful it was seeing Kitty rediscover who she was and realizing she didn’t need Dan. I found myself fist pumping every time she stood up for herself. I loved seeing her brother, Jimby and friends, Molly and Violet, supporting her as they always had. The book was even better with Ollie, whom had always loved her but always watched her from afar. Now, he is determined to fight for her like he should have when Dan first entered the picture.

I adored all the relationships and friendships within the book. The best part was adding Kitty’s deceased mother’s influence throughout the book. Kitty would always feel as if her mother was still with her in some sense through little things and just when she needed her guidance.  In a sense, she was a character who had a huge impact on Kitty. If you are looking for a book with plenty emotion, second chances, friendship, and love, look no further than this one!!!!

 Extract from Chapter 7.

It catches up with criminal barrister Dan, who’s stormed out of his home after an argument with Kitty and headed to chambers. As you can see, he pretty quickly puts her out of his mind once his flirtatious young pupil
makes an appearance…

Dan climbed the wide stairs leading to his private room in chambers, the thick, red runner
soft beneath his feet. He relished this space with its dark oak panelling, leather chairs and
fabrics in thick, muted tweeds. Everything about it exuded masculine elegance, from the
legal prints that shared wall space with hunting prints, to the vast leather-topped partner’s
desk.
He’d earned it through sheer hard work, elbowing his way to the privilege of having a
senior tenant’s room in no time. A dazzling advocate, his reputation attracted much work to
chambers. And it wasn’t unknown for fellow members of the Bar to take a seat in the
public gallery to view his cross-examination of an unwitting defendant in his latest high-
profile case. They would watch, with morbid fascination, as he wormed his way into the
defendant’s mind before savagely tearing them down.
Unfortunately, such viciousness was proving difficult for Dan to shake off with the
removal of his wig and gown in the robing room. Which was why he was still riddled with
it when he returned home.
He walked over to his desk, stroking the worn green leather where he’d spent hours
poring over complicated briefs. Inhaling the scent of beeswax polish that pervaded the air.
Here was where he felt truly at home.
A silver-framed black and white photo caught his eye, and he picked it up. It was of
Kitty and the children, all three of them sat amongst the heather, laughing. Kitty was in the
middle, an arm around each child, with Humphrey — wearing one of his customary grins
— and Ethel at their feet. Dan had taken it in happier times, high up on Great Stangdale
moor above their village. He couldn’t remember when he’d last seen them all looking so
carefree. He quickly flicked away a twinge of unease, before it could take root.
A tapping at his door broke his train of thoughts, ‘Come in.’
Astrid appeared in the doorway, sashayed across to his desk, and all thoughts of his
family were obliterated. He was pleased to see that she was wearing a tight-fitting black
suit with a short skirt. Her crisp, white blouse was buttoned low and struggled to restrain
her generous breasts that jiggled with every step. The outfit was hardly appropriate for the
Bar, and she was the talk of the robing room, but to Dan, she was a welcome distraction.

He savoured the vision as she teetered on her dangerously high heels. ‘Miss Eriksson, how
can I help you?’ he said with a wolfish smile.
‘Well, Mr Fairfax-Bennett.’
‘Dan.’
‘Well, Dan, I’ve prepared all the documents you need for tomorrow’s conference in
Bewley and Travis and I’ve chased the CPS for the forensic report in Davies, so I was
wondering if there’s anything else I could do for you?’ She smiled suggestively as her gaze
fell to Dan’s mouth.
‘Oh, you do, do you?’ His eyes moved from her lips to her chest. ‘Well, I haven’t got
anything to give you at the moment, but I’m going to be working here quite late tonight,
long after everyone else has gone, so if you want to pop back then, I’m sure I’ll have
thought of something.’
Astrid popped her pen back into her mouth, rolled her tongue around the end, then
sucked it gently. ‘Sounds good.’
It certainly does, he thought, watching her arse wiggle as she walked away.

Q & A with Eliza J. Scott

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR THIS BOOK?
Well, it was quite a long time ago – four and a half years, to be precise! – when
I started to write the first draft of this book (though, I can remember it like it
was yesterday). The day I actually sat down in front of my laptop and decided
to get started with the book, I had a pretty clear idea in my mind of what I
wanted it to be. However, when I started writing, a completely different story
emerged, and I’ve no idea how that happened! Ideas just kept flowing, and I
kept on typing! One thing, however, that didn’t change, was the setting; it was
always going to be beautiful North Yorkshire Moors. Actually, make that two
things; it was always going to feature at least one black Labrador!

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT EACH
CHARACTER?
Ooh, what a fab question! I put an awful lot of thought into the characters for
this book, and I could see them very clearly in my mind’s eye. So, here goes:
KITTY – She’s a really decent person and, despite what she goes through in
the story, she still retains her strong moral values and a well-developed sense
of what’s right and wrong. These are traits she tries to instil into her children,
Lucas and Lily.
OLLIE – He’s my dream man! He’s tall, strong, good-looking and incredibly
kind – the sort that makes you go weak at the knees!
JAMES/JIMBY – I love that he always tries to see the funny side of
everything and likes to make people laugh; he has a happy aura about him.
VIOLET – Her uniqueness and strong sense of identity.
MOLLY – Without doubt, her feistiness
PIP – His laid-back approach to life; he’s the polar-opposite to Molly, his
wife, but they complement each other well, and he loves her to bits.
DAN – Boo! Hiss! He’s my least favourite character! Is there anything
likeable about him? I’m not so sure…
SUB-CHARACTERS – I’ve tried to make these colourful and interesting,
and relevant to the story.
HUMPHREY & ETHEL – THE BLACK LABRADORS – I’m a huge black
Labrador fan and will always write at least one into my books. I love them for
their loyalty, the friendliness and their upbeat nature – Humph and Eth have
these qualities in bucketloads.

DO YOU HAVE A PLAYLIST YOU LISTEN TO WHEN WRITING?
I’m afraid I don’t. I really like peace and quiet so find music a bit distracting.
Sorry, that’s a bit of a boring answer, isn’t it?

ANY FAVOURITE FOOD/DRINKS YOU LIKE WHILE WRITING?
A plentiful supply of Yorkshire tea is a must – strong, just a splash of milk and
no sugar. I’m a huge ginger biscuit fiend, and there’s always a smile on my
face if I have a packet of these to hand. Chocolate helps the process and if I’m
on a health kick, a bowl of mixed nuts.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE A WRITER?
As a small child, pretty much straight after I’d read my first book. I loved that
reading had the power to transport you to another world and I wanted to be
able to do that. So, it was the first thing I ever wanted to be. Of course,
between then and me actually taking it seriously, I’ve wanted to be a whole
variety of things and life, inevitably took over. My plans got pushed further
and further to the back of my mind.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE READS?
My favourite book of all time is Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. It’s just
breath-taking, and I can still remember the feeling I had after I first read it.
Books by contemporary writers? That’s harder because I like so many and my
taste is quite eclectic, but I’d have to include both novels by Joanna Cannon.
The Trouble with Goats and Sheep and There’s Something About Elsie are
definitely classics of the future.
I always enjoy anything by Cathy Bramley; I love the warmth in her writing.
Her last book, Hetty’s Farmhouse Bakery, was particularly delicious. And, as
her covers are always absolutely gorgeous, I’ll always buy the paperback
version – they look so pretty on my bookshelf!
Philipa Gregory writes awesome historical novels and The White Queen –
from her The Cousins’ War Series – is just stunning.
In a Manhattan Minute by Helen J Rolfe is a favourite. Helen is an author
whose books I will always buy as you know you’re guaranteed a great read –
she’s also a lovely person and has helped me a lot on my self-pub journey.
My Summer of Magic Moments by Caroline Roberts was probably my
favourite book of last year. I can’t remember a time when I shed so many tears
(of happiness, laughter, sadness!) while reading a book.

CJ Sansom’s Shardlake series is amazing, and I’ve loved every book. From the
first pages, you’re transported straight back to England in the Tudor times,
which is one of my favourite periods in history. If I had to pick a favourite
book from the series, I’d say it’s Lamentation.
No list would be complete without adding Labyrinth by Kate Mosse.
Unputdownable is the word that springs to mind when I think of this book. It
also started my yearning to visit Carcassonne in France – which features
pretty highly on my wish list.
Phew! That was definitely the hardest question to answer, and I could have
gone on for much longer!

Head of the class…

Garrett Daniels has this whole life thing figured out.

The cocky, charismatic former high school star quarterback is an idolized football coach and “cool” teacher in the hometown where he’s not just a golden boy — he’s platinum. He has good friends, a great house on the lake, and the best damn sidekick a man could ask for: Snoopy, the albino beagle.

Then…Callie Carpenter comes home.

And knocks him right on his tight end zone.

Back to school…

Callie has a pretty sweet life herself…on the other side of the country. But circumstances — that she’d prefer to never speak of again — have brought her back home, helping out her parents and substitute teaching at her old high school.

Now she’s facing bickering, raging hormones, constant gossip, awkward weirdness, and drama galore…and that’s just the teachers.

Just like old times…

When Garrett offers to show his former high school sweetheart the secrets of his winning teacher ways, Callie jumps at the chance – and then has to stop herself from jumping him.

Good friends are all they can ever be.

Or…these teachers just might end up getting schooled — hard — by love.

Top Read of 2018

All-time Favorite Read

I just adored everything about this book…the storyline, the heart-melting romance, and the characters!

I love second chance romances, and this one is one of my favorites. Chase made it a bit different than others in the genre. There wasn’t a lot of angst or drama involved with their breakup after high school. Both Callie and Garrett have gone on to have pretty successful lives as adults, but they never could give their hearts to anyone else. Thankfully, they are about to get their second chance!

When they see each other for the first time in the school parking lot where Garrett works, the old feelings are still there. He is happily surprised that she will be working as a substitute for the year, and she is going to need all his help if she is going to survive with high school kids!

A book has to have several ingredients to make me fall in love with it…the plot, the setting, the characters, and emotion (whether I cry, laugh, or both). Chase had every single one of those.

Chase created such a great setting. I could envision the entire town, and I got that from the very first chapter with Garrett giving me a tour of it and why it was so special to him, from the bagel shop, to the lake, and even to Ollie, who greets everyone as they pass him. She just went the extra mile with every setting she created, from Garrett’s house to the high school. She created an entire environment that pulled me into the story.

All of Chase’s characters, even the secondary ones, played a crucial part. She used every single one of them in each scene she created to say something important or just to make me laugh!

As for the main characters, she couldn’t have found better narrators than Garrett and Callie. They were both multi-layered and complex. I learned something new about them with each chapter I read. Garrett is gorgeous, sexy, but he is so much more. He is sweet and caring, not just to his family but also his students. He also has the best sense of humor. He made me laugh quite a few times throughout the book.

Callie, who wouldn’t love her? She was thrown into a role she thought she would never be, and it’s the hardest she has had as a substitute teacher. While it’s a rough go at first, she finds something in each of her toughest students! She has the makings of a great teacher!

While I loved Callie and Garrett as individuals, I loved them even more as a couple. The chemistry and feelings are still there. Chase did a great job of showing the readers how special their past relationship was through telling the story between their different POVs and the flashes back to the past that were flawlessly weaved throughout the book. I loved watching them fall in love again, but this new love isn’t without its challenges. Yes, the chemistry, lust, and love is still present, but they aren’t kids anymore…they are adults now! In a sense, they have to get to know one another as adults! Oh man, did I enjoy taking the journey with them.

I could go on and on about how much I enjoyed this book! Emma Chase made me swoon, and she made me laugh….A LOT! There were some small moments of sadness, but she always brought a smile back to my face. All of those things made me connect with the storyline and the characters. Boy, were there some characters, Callie’s parents, Dean, Miss McCarthy, Jerry Dorfman, and Donna Merkle. These were just a few of them, but I will remember them all.

The icing on the cake were the three epilogues….oh my!!! I highly recommend reading Getting Schooled. You will swoon, you will laugh, and you might actually look back and see that your teachers were actually human beings like the rest of us!!!!

Excerpt

High school parking lots are one of the most dangerous places on earth. I don’t have statistics to back that up…but I know it’s true.

I pull into the school parking lot Monday morning in my Dad’s giant, newly repaired mint-green Buick, with Back in Black by AC/DC blasting from the speakers. I feel tough, powerful—like I’m driving a tank.

I’m a badass teacher—I’ll run you down even if you’re a student—I’ve got twenty-nine more in class just like you.

The outfit helps too—leather boots, blue jeans, a starched white blouse and a black leather jacket. It’s my armor. The morning air is cool and crisp today, but I barely feel it. I’m locked and loaded and ready to roll.

As I march towards the main entrance, I spot Garrett and Dean and Alison Bellinger outside the doors. They pause when they see me, waiting.

“Damn,” Dean chuckles. “Callie’s got her shit-kickers on. Did you dig them out of a mosh pit from 1993?”

Garrett crosses his arms. “Somebody’s channeling Michelle Pfiefer in Dangerous Minds.”

He looks fantastic. His hair is tousled from the breeze and kisses his brow, and he’s wearing a dark blue sweater that’s snug around his biceps and soft, worn, light blue jeans. I remember his arms around me yesterday on my parent’s porch. The wonder and exhilaration of the moment.

Of him.

The intensity in his eyes, the desire and possessiveness in the grasp of his hands. The scorching feel of his mouth, his wet talented tongue that made my stomach swirl and my head spin.

So much for not complicating things.

But I’m not going to play head games with myself or Garrett—we’re too old for that shit.

I have feelings for him—I always have—our break-up had nothing to do with either of us not wanting each other desperately. But these aren’t just leftover echoes of a sweet, first love—this is something new. A throbbing, breathless attraction to the amazing man he’s become. I want to be near him. I want to know him, inside and out, all over again.

And he feels the same way. Garrett wants this version of me as much as he always did—maybe even more. I heard it in his whispered words and felt it in his kiss.

I don’t know if we have a future, if it can go anywhere. We have separate lives on opposite ends of the country. But I’m not going to worry about that—for now, I’m going to take each day as it comes and enjoy every moment we can.

Except for now. Now is not the time for enjoying or worrying or relationship building…now is the time for focusing. Now is the time to be ice and steel—don’t smile, don’t waver.

“Little fucknutters don’t know who the hell they’re dealing with,” I growl.

Allison pumps her fist. “That’s the spirit.”

Garrett opens the door for me. “Go get ‘em, Gangster’s Paradise.”

Christie’s Review

~5 STARS~

Love is a mirror, reflecting back everything you put into it–joy and pain, bitterness and hope, bliss and fear. It’s a mixture of who we both are and who we will become. Two lost souls in the world, walking two separate paths until in a moment, they converge and become one soul on one path, finding their way together.

Wow! Wow!!! D.Nichole King blew me away!!! I don’t think I have read a love story quite like this one. I mean this in the best possible way!!!

It is told from both Jake and Finley’s POV! I always like that because it allows me to see inside their innermost thoughts.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Finley at first. I thought at times she was selfish, and I couldn’t understand why she acted the way she did. However, it didn’t take me long after getting to know her to understand why she behaved in the way she did. I think she put it all in perspective for me when she described how she felt about Jake. “I fell in love with him, all the way and hard. But, I didn’t fall into trust. They’re different, and sometimes completely unrelated.”  She loved him, yet she couldn’t give her heart to him 100 percent, so she let him go. That was pretty remarkable and unselfish on her part. So, when she and Jake tried again, I respected her more for really trying to work on the trust part.

Jake really was a good guy just one in an unfortunate circumstance. I honestly admired him for trusting Finley with his heart again. It couldn’t have been easy, and his decision to pursue her would have far-reaching consequences.

This isn’t an easy romance. At times, it’s messy and sad. I have left out a good portion of what happens because there is potential to spoil this most unexpected and very special love story. There are outside people and circumstances that will guide you to the ending. King will put your emotions through the wringer, but the end result is worth every twist, turn, and tears!

I’m pretty sure I drink too much Pepsi. I’m also pretty sure that somedays it’s what keeps me sane. Well, Pepsi and writing, that is.

I’m a dreamer, an inspirer. I find beauty in weakness, brokenness, and heartbreak. In life, and joy, and happiness. These moments don’t define us, but the choices we make in these moments do.

I write about these moments. About the choices we make and the paths we tread. About the circumstances that make us who we are and the experiences that will lead us to who we will become.

I write about life. Love. Pain. And hope..

Coming Home to Ottercombe Bay

by Bella Osborne

Coming Home to Ottercombe Bay

Synopsis

Daisy Wickens has returned to Ottercombe Bay, the picturesque Devon town where her mother died when she was a girl. She plans to leave as soon as her great uncle’s funeral is over, but Great Uncle Reg had other ideas. He’s left Daisy a significant inheritance – an old building in a state of disrepair, which could offer exciting possibilities, but to get it she must stay in Ottercombe Bay for twelve whole months.

With the help of a cast of quirky locals, a few gin cocktails and a black pug with plenty of attitude, Daisy might just turn this into something special. But can she ever hope to be happy among the ghosts of her past?

Christie’s Review

~4.5 STARS~

Great beach read full of charm, quirky characters, and a beautiful, quaint setting!!!

Daisy Wickens has returned to the picturesque town of Ottercombe Bay for her great-uncle, Reg’s, funeral. It holds some wonderful memories as well as some very sad ones. Not one to stay in one place for long, Daisy has plans to attend the funeral and leave again. However, her Uncle Reg had other ideas for her. Before she can obtain her inheritance of an old railway station, she has to stay put for an entire year! This will be one of the most difficult times, but she will also find out so much about herself and possibly even find her Mr. Right!

The characters were charming and quirky. Daisy is pretty complicated. She has traveled all over Europe, but not for all of the right reasons. She is running from the ghosts of her past. This is when the additional secondary characters are so important within the book. Each person, especially Max, helps her face those ghosts and become the woman she was meant to be. The romance between Max and Daisy is a slow build up, but this book is more about her journey, and he happens to be a great discovery along the way. As I wrote, the secondary characters, like her Aunt Coral, Tamsyn, Jason, and even her deceased Uncle Reg had an important part of the book. Even Aunt Coral’s beloved dog, Bugs, was a character I adored.

If you are looking for the perfect beach read this summer, look no further than Coming Home to Ottercombe Bay!!!

Disgrace by Brittainy C. Cherry Release Blitz

DISGRACE_RELEASE BLITZ

Disgrace, an all-new romantic and emotional standalone from Brittainy C. Cherry is LIVE!

bcherry-disgrace-amazon.jpg

Synopsis:

Each day I prayed for my husband to love me again.

After fifteen years together, he walked away from me, and into the arms of another.

I didn’t know how to cope. I didn’t know my worth. I didn’t know how to exist without him by my side.

All I wanted was for him to come back to me.

Then, Jackson Emery appeared.

He was supposed to be a distraction for my mind. A summer fling. A confidence boost to my bruised heart.

We were perfect for one another, because we both knew we wouldn’t last. Jackson didn’t believe in commitment, and I no longer believed in love. He was too closed-off for me, and I was too damaged for him.

Everything was fine, until one night my heart skipped a beat.

I didn’t expect him to make me laugh. To make me think. To make my sadness somewhat disappear.

When our time was up, my heart didn’t know how to walk away.

Each day I prayed for my husband to love me again, yet slowly my prayers began to shift toward the man who wasn’t right for me.

I prayed for one more smile, one more kiss, one more laugh, one more touch…

I prayed for him to be mine.

Even though I knew his heart wasn’t destined to love.
