 5-star-a

Never has a short story packed a punch like this one…I’m ready for more!!!! The opening scene had me completely riveted. It was heart-pounding!

Taylor has been running for years, and she is tired. She has done what she had to do to protect her sister, Laura, but sometimes to the detriment to herself. She lost the one man she ever loved, Ryder. Now, that she has seen him again, she doesn’t want to walk away again.

“You were home, Ryder,” I spoke softly, “always home, but I couldn’t stay. I’m sorry.”

The question she has to ask herself is can she finally quit running and let him completely end finally explaining why she left him all those years ago. I can’t wait to find out in the next part of the series.

Excerpt:

“Stop!” I cried, grabbing my sister’s arm and dragging her to the living room. I pushed her in front of the fireplace, pointing at the map spread across the wall, “we do it this way, always,” I reminded her.

Laura tried to twist away from me, I held my grip on her wrist firmer as she shook her head at me. “I don’t care where, Taylor, I need away from here,” she griped irately, “I want to be on my own, be me. Don’t you get it?” I blinked at her, finally processing what she was saying to me.

I pushed her closer to the map. “Pick your pin.” We stood shoulder to shoulder yet couldn’t have been further apart, she didn’t move an inch. “Pick your fucking pin,” I spat out. With shaking fingers, she plucked the pink pin from the corner of the map. Pink was my colour. I took my hand from her wrist and entwined my fingers with hers as I picked the blue pin. “Together,” I breathed. Laura gulped and nodded at the same time, squeezing my fingers. “One, two, three…” I closed my eyes, having faith she would too, then pushed my pin into the wall. It was tradition, always the way we decided our next hiding place. Some had been pleasant, most not. She was right; it was time to leave and I trusted Laura’s pin to take us home. I forced down the hurt I experienced at having to cut those proverbial apron strings. Dubious as I was, Laura needed this and I couldn’t take it from her, she’d lost so much already. It was time to live again, time for us to take our lives back.

I let go of her hand, opening my eyes to see immediately my pin was a lost cause. An expanse of nothing surrounded it, the blue pin floated in the middle of nowhere, a little like us for the last eight years. I scanned for Laura’s pin and found it on top of a town. I looked at her, smiling, but she was staring at the floor, not an ounce of emotion coming from her.

Author Bio

K A Sands is an exciting new author who has a passion for reading and more often than not, can be found with her nose stuck in a book. She loves angsty, dark reads but is not averse to the fun, light hearted side either. Typically, a romance reader, of most genres/sub genres, she loves reading a debut herself. Her passion for the written words goes back to her childhood and she has always dreamed of writing and telling the world her stories.

Not quite a stay at home mum, K A Sands has a busy life which she shares with her husband of twenty-two years and her little monkey boy. Her adult children have flown the coop already, but still manage to come home for ‘mama’s lasagne.’

Avid eater of mayonnaise and chips, anti-get-fitter, lover of cheesy music and a fierce advocate of things close to her heart. She enjoys doing photoshop manipulations and would love to be a whiz using it… maybe one day. She has a bucket list as long as her arm, which includes sky diving and visiting Cambodia. And wants to travel the world.

Great believer in second chances, insta-love (because her love is a product of that), fairy tales and monsters… K A Sands just wants to write all the words for you.

SYNOPSIS

You’ve heard this story before. Woman feels her biological clock ticking and gets someone to knock her up.

Not for love, for baby.

Crazy, right?

That’s what I thought.

Then I found out my fiancé had a vasectomy. The life I thought I had? Nope. Suddenly I’m 33, and I don’t even have a kissing buddy.

When my mom’s health takes a turn and I wind up back in my hometown of Fate, Alabama, I tell myself to leave things up to…well, you know.

Then I see Gabriel McKellan. He’s Fate’s most famous son, a bestselling author who is beautiful, complicated, and living just below me. In addition to his plus-sized brain, Gabe’s well-endowed in other ways, and great in bed to boot. I would know. He’s my ex husband.

When I suggest The Plan, I don’t imagine that he’ll take the bait. It’s been ten years, and we don’t work. But Fate has other plans for both of us.

Blurb

Once upon a time, a girl loved a boy and he loved her back. They lived happily ever after.

But our story was never that simple.

I loved Josh with all I had, right until the day he left. Now, all these years later, he was back—and wanting me the way I’d always longed for him. Except now, I belonged to someone else. Someone who never left me the way Josh had. I figured that was the end of our story. I couldn’t alter the past.

I didn’t want to rewrite my future.

Brianna was always more than my best friend. She was the shining light in my black hole of an existence, and I loved her with every cell and bone in my body. I wasn’t good enough for her, though—more the villain than the hero in our fairy tale. When I had to leave, I vowed to come back a better man—for her. But when I finally did return, she wasn’t waiting for me anymore. She had someone new, her very own Prince Charming. Did that mean our story was over? I couldn’t change our past.

It was time to rewrite our ending.

Excerpt
Brianna hadn’t uttered a single word since we stepped into the truck. Tension radiated off her entire body as she faced as far away from me as possible. I knew she was avoiding me. Our near kiss was too much for her to handle right now. I should’ve backed off and let her have her space, and I did for a few days. All we were doing was delaying the inevitable—whether she chose to admit it or not.

“I’m sorry we had to leave so soon. I would have liked to meet more of your friends.” I glanced her way, and Brianna nodded in response, still not looking at me.

“I saw Christal corner you at the bar.” Her voice was aloof but the ticking in her jaw said otherwise as she drew back into the seat.

Sick, my ass. I noticed her glaring at me and Christal tonight. She stared daggers into Christal’s back every time she touched me. She could act as aloof as she wanted. I knew she fucking hated it. My cupcake was in a losing battle with herself. She was going to make herself really get sick if she didn’t surrender soon.

“Yeah,” I chuckled. “Chatty little thing.”

Brianna nodded but wouldn’t look my way.

“She is. I’m surprised she didn’t slip you her number,” she scoffed.

“Oh, she did. In fact, she opened with that.” I fought a smile, picturing the wheels turning in her adorable little head.

Brianna’s head whipped to mine. “She did?”

“What’s wrong?” I asked with as much innocence as I could get away with. “You don’t like her?”

“No,” she offered a bit too abruptly. “I mean, she’s fine, I guess. You can talk to whomever you want.”

“So, if I take her out . . . you’d be okay with that?” I let Christal down easy and right away, but Brianna didn’t need to know that. The prick in me wanted to see how this played out.

“Sure.” She shrugged as she turned away from me again. “Do what you want.” Her jaw clenched so hard, I thought she was going to chip a tooth as she focused on the Hudson River whizzing passed the car window.

Since we were kids, she had the worst poker face. I always knew the second she was pissed off, and judging by how her chest heaved, she was about ready to blow.

Traffic always bottlenecked around the same exit. We inched until we came to a full stop. I slid my arm around her and leaned in. She stiffened, but unless she jumped out of the car onto the side of the highway, she had nowhere to go.

I nuzzled her cheek. Fuck it, I was going for broke.

“And if I . . . take her home. You’d be . . .”

“Fine,” she breathed out, her voice a mix of fury and lust. “Like I just said, do what you want.”

I laughed, victorious. “Cupcake,” I whispered as my lips grazed her cheek, “you are so full of shit.”

Six years, a complex about my freckles, a love for pastrami, and a fear of failure.

That’s what he gave me before slaughtering my heart and my faith in men.”

Suffering from the sting of betrayal, twenty-eight-year-old Avery Johannas quits her job and moves hundreds of miles away to Ocean City, the beach town of her dreams. With the help of her zany roommate, Jodie, Avery finds a new career, home, and freedom. Throughout her self-exploration, she makes only one rule: She won’t give her heart to a man again. She’s living for herself this time.

But then she meets Jesse.

A tattoo shop owner, the green-eyed Jesse Pearce is wild with a touch of mystery. As Jesse and Avery explore Ocean City and their friendship, they’ll have a hard time drawing a line in the sand between their hearts.

When summer nights get a little more heated than either expected, they’ll have to ask themselves: Can they let go of their notions of love, or will their hearts be permanently inked by past pain?

About Lindsay Detwiler

An English teacher, an author, and a fan of anything pink and/or glittery, Lindsay’s the English teacher cliché; she loves cats, reading, Shakespeare, and Poe.

She currently lives in her hometown with her husband, Chad (her junior high sweetheart); their cats, Arya, Amelia, Alice, Marjorie, and Bob; and their Mastiff, Henry.

Lindsay’s goal with her writing is to show the power of love and the beauty of life while also instilling a true sense of realism in her work. Some reviewers have noted that her books are not the “typical romance.” With her novels coming from a place of honesty, Lindsay examines the difficult questions, looks at the tough emotions, and paints the pictures that are sometimes difficult to look at. She wants her fiction to resonate with readers as realistic, poetic, and powerful. Lindsay wants women readers to be able to say, “I see myself in that novel.” She wants to speak to the modern woman’s experience while also bringing a twist of something new and exciting. Her aim is for readers to say, “That could happen,” or “I feel like the characters are real.” That’s how she knows she’s done her job.

Lindsay’s hope is that by becoming a published author, she can inspire some of her students and other aspiring writers to pursue their own passions. She wants them to see that any dream can be attained and publishing a novel isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
